APC Fails To Refund Over 120 Aspirants One Week After Convention

0

Over 120 aspirants who stepped down for consensus candidates at the recently held convention of the All Progressives Congress have not been refunded the cost of their forms over one week after they were promised, ABN TV learnt.

Full List Of 77 Newly Elected APC National Officials

President Muhammadu Buhari, had persuaded the party to embrace consensus, which was the model adopted to fill most of the 78 positions. After imposing Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the national chairman, governors and other top party stakeholders drew a unity list, which was ratified during the convention.

Those whose names did not make the unity list were compelled to step down. According to National Convention Electoral Committee led by Jigawa State Governor, Muhammad Badaru, those vying for 66 offices stepped down for consensus candidates while elections were conducted for 12 offices.

The President had said those affected by the consensus arrangement should be refunded the money they spent to obtain expression of interest and nomination forms.

Sources in the party however said the total sum being owed the aspirants was not less than N400m.

A party chieftain said, “The new executive members would need time to compile the full list. Also, not everyone paid the same amount. Remember that women and persons with disabilities were given a discount of 50 per cent. Also, some people did not purchase forms by themselves. Some purchased it by proxy and some used groups. In such a situation who will you pay the refund to?”

An aspirant to the office of the national chairman, Chief Sunny Moniedafe, told Sunday PUNCH that he had approached the party for his N10m but he was asked to be patient.

Moniedafe added, “They have not refunded my N10m. I visited the party secretariat last week to deliver my letter of intention to step down which was accepted. I wrote another letter for my refund which also included my bank account but the letter was not accepted.

“They said I should wait and that the new chairman had not fully taken over but I know he resumed on Wednesday. I will go back on Wednesday. I know they will not renege on their promise because it will be disastrous.”

Moniedafe, who spent 20 months campaigning for the chairmanship position before he opted for the position of the deputy national chairman a few weeks to the convention, said he spent more than the N10m he used in purchasing the form, saying it was less than 10 per cent of his total expenses.

When contacted, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, told Sunday PUNCH in an interview that the aspirants who stepped down would be refunded, saying the new leadership of the party just took over.

He added, “I think it requires a bit of patience for the new leadership to settle in. As we know, matters of finance and all of that are required to be reported and properly documented, so that this new party administration will have a clear sense of what is and what was. After that, I’m quite sure they will begin to attend to those commitments.”

He commended those who stepped down, describing them as loyal party men and women who responded to the patriotic call of the President.

We've Uncovered Plot To Abduct, Repatriate Top Biafra Agitators Abroad - IPOB

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports on Saturday from Awka that IPOB yielded to the appeal by the Anambra Government and Traditional rulers to pave the way for peace, since all Igbo stakeholders and religious leaders have declared their intention to find a lasting solution to insecurity and incessant sit-at-home directives in the South East.

NAN reports that the decision was disclosed by the Chairman, Anambra Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, during a one-day peacebuilding and security meeting held in Awka on Saturday.

His Royal Highness, Igwe Achebe, who is also the Igwe of Onitsha, said that the stakeholders have continually held meetings on the way forward to lasting resolutions of the impasse with the agitators.

He said that after its meeting with the group on Friday, April 1, it was agreed that a call to release the IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, would be a step to dousing the tension in the state.

He said that after the meeting, the group placed a call to all its members to sheathe their swords, put down their guns and go the way of dialogue.

“We call on all who had taken the way of gun to put down their guns and take up the olive leaf from the government to better themselves,” Achebe said.

He said that the state government has set April 4 for prayers aimed at seeking God’s face to restore lasting peace in Anambra and South East as a whole.

NAN quoted Achebe as indicating that it was agreed that on April 4, all churches in Igboland and South East will join in prayers to seek God’s forgiveness and to restore peace in the area.

“Igboland has lost so much in the economic and social development of the zone and we are tired of the situation and want peace,” the traditional ruler said.

According to him, “It is agreed that on Sunday, April 3, all churches will announce the IPOB decision to their faith to come out on Monday 11am to their various churches to offer prayers to God for the restoration of peace and economic development.”

NAN reports that lots of other speakers at the meeting spoke in line with the decision.

The speakers include Mr Uche Okafor, Anambra Speaker, who assured that the legislators would partner with the state government to enthrone lasting peace and economic development of the state and the zone.

Chief Damin Ogene-Okeke, the National Vice President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, urged the public to embrace the decision to establish peacebuilding amongst “ourselves and work towards improving security sanity in the state”.

He called on the governors of the South East States to represent their people well and speak the minds of the citizens who elected them into office.

An erstwhile factional leader of the All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State, Senator Kabiru Marafa, has advised Governor Bello Matawalle to reconcile with his deputy, Aliyu Gusau, so that he might retain his seat.

Alhaji Mahdi Gusau

Marafa, who was addressing thousands of APC supporters during the distribution of 172 trucks of assorted grains purchased by former Governor Yari for the Ramadan fast, said Governor Matawalle could still retain his position if he reconciled with his deputy.

“I am calling on the Governor to meet our younger brother, the PDP Deputy Governor Mahdi Aliyu Gusau and seek out of court settlement so that he may not be thrown out of office.

“He has seen what happened in Ebonyi and Cross Rivers States.

“We told him that he should not defect to the APC because the APC is like a heaven, whoever goes to the heaven will never return to the earth.

“He did not heed to our warning and was misled by some overzealous individuals to defect to the APC and he is now regretting his actions.

“I want to use this opportunity to call on our supporters to remain calm and watch the unfolding drama.”

Marafa maintained that Yari and himself were in touch with other prominent personalities in the state on whether to remain in the APC or not.

He said, “The former Governor, Alhaji Abdul Aziz Yari, myself and other prominent personalities are currently in consultation and by the grace of God, we will soon come out with a solution.”

Viktor Orban, The EU Leader Who Can’t Quit Putin, Faces A United Front In Hungary’s Election

Viktor Orban, Hungary's prime minister, delivers his final campaign speech ahead of the general election, in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, on Friday, April 1, 2022

Six weeks ago, Hungary’s election campaign looked and sounded very different.

Viktor Orban, Hungary’s prime minister, delivers his final campaign speech ahead of the general election, in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, on Friday, April 1, 2022

The stakes were already high. Viktor Orban, the longest-serving national leader in the European Union, was seeking to extend his authoritarian premiership deep into its second decade. His rival, leading a united front of opposition parties, bluntly denounced Orban’s crusade against independent institutions and the rule of law.

But the political focus was resolutely domestic. When foreign policy took center stage, it was usually raised by Orban to tout his international credentials — such as on February 1, when he boasted of his political longevity while in Moscow, a few feet from his staunch ally President Vladimir Putin.

Now, everything has changed. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine later that same month has upended the race, recasting its protagonists and rewriting their pitches. It has left Orban, widely regarded as the EU’s most pro-Kremlin leader, walking a political tightrope. And it has shone a spotlight on a years-long entanglement between him and the Russian President, two strongmen whose political journeys bear some notable similarities.

“If you want to analyze the election campaign, you have to draw a line on February 24,” said Andrea Virág, director of strategy at the Republikon Institute think tank in Budapest, Hungary’s capital. “Since the war started, it’s completely different.”

“The teachings of the holy Quran and exemplary qualities of Prophet Muhammed must be sustained in the holy month of Ramadan and beyond.
