Greece joined a host of countries in “unequivocally” condemning the atrocities revealed over the weekend after Russian forces withdrew from Bucha, Ukraine.

In a statement posted online on Sunday, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs described scenes of civilian corpses lying strewn across the streets of Bucha as “horrific crimes committed during the withdrawal of the Russian occupation forces against Ukrainian unarmed civilians.” 

The statement continued: “Those responsible for these crimes must be held accountable. We call for the immediate investigation of the crimes and the punishment of those responsible.”

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Greeks will be evacuated from Ukraine via Odesa, where the Greek consulate has resumed operations, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias announced during his visit to the port city in southern Ukraine on Sunday.

“The operation of the Consulate will facilitate in the distribution of humanitarian aid” for the “entire population of the city,” he told reporters, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It will also assist in “the creation of corridors for the evacuation of Diaspora Greeks, if deemed necessary, from any part of Ukraine via Odesa,” he continued, as well as highlighting Greece’s “historic presence” in the city.

The Guild of Sports Editors, the umbrella body of managers of sports in the country’s major media organizations, has advised members of the Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to resign from their positions honorably and give the game chance to breathe.

Speaking on the backdrop of the country’s senior national football team, Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for Qatar 2022 World Cup, the editors said the board members would be doing the nation great injustice if they continued to misdirect Nigerian football after last Tuesday’s misadventure.

In a statement signed by the Guild’s Vice President, Adekunle Salami, the editors described the decision to sack members of the Super Eagles’ technical crew as diversionary, adding that Nigerian football needed a clean break from the malaise of the last eight years.

“Nigerian football is bigger than any individual and should not be tied to the fortunes of anybody.

“The leadership of the current NFF has ridden on the back of Nigerian football to get to top positions in the world football governing body, FIFA, to the detriment of the game.

“Nigerian football now needs a total overhaul, from the lowest league to the national team and that can only happen when patriotic individuals, not self-seekers, are given the opportunity to manage the game.

“We call on the National Assembly, Federal Government, and especially, Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, to begin the process of cleansing the football house.

“Tuesday’s failure is one of the results of poor decision making, dishonest deployment of men and materials, as well as avarice that have eaten deep into the fabrics of the NFF.

“We ask, therefore, that every executive member of the federation should resign honourably;

“All the backroom staff, including Super Eagles secretary, team manager and protocol officer, among other officers, who have spent more than 10 years in office, must be redeployed to allow for fresh ideas.”

The editors accused the current leadership of the NFF of killing Nigeria’s football, saying many of the board members use their respective positions to fulfil personal interests.

The Guild also recalls that the Algeria Football Federation (AFF) president Sharafeddine Emara resigned after his country failed to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup following the 2-1 defeat suffered against Cameroon at home last week.

“It is unfortunate that the NFF has killed the local league to such an extent that no player from the domestic game is deemed capable of playing for the Super Eagles.

“The junior national teams, which, hitherto, was a nursery for the Super Eagles, no longer produce quality youngsters because of the corruption that has killed the age-grade teams.”

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decried a stream of incorrect reports being peddled in sections of the media, in connection with Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup playoff match between Nigeria and Ghana at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi said on Friday: “We are alarmed at the influx of incorrect reports, otherwise known as fake news, mostly in the social media. There is no truth to the reports that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja has been banned for any length of time by FIFA. It is a concoction by some persons with a fertile imagination. The NFF has not received any such communication from either FIFA or CAF.

“There has also been an outlandish report that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) equipment that was installed for the match had been stolen. We initially thought this was an April Fool prank but it is alarming that some media outlets are taking it seriously. Nothing of such happened. The VAR equipment remains intact and has been returned to the FIFA office in Zurich, Switzerland by Sebastian Runge, FIFA’s Head of Technology.”

Sanusi added: “The NFF understands that Nigerians in their generality were sorely disappointed by the result of the match, which came short of having the Super Eagles at the World Cup. It is a painful situation for everyone, including ourselves at the Federation. However, we are appealing that the propensity for half-truths and outright falsehood be discouraged. We believe that the present squad of Super Eagles is still capable of achieving great things.”

Bandits have raided some houses at Anguwar Maji, in Jere town along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway and abducted 22 villagers barely 24 hours after the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, visited the highway.

Jere, which shares a boundary with Tafa-Sabon -Wuse in Niger State, is located on the ever-busy Abuja-Kaduna Highway.

A resident of Anguwar Maji, Shehu Bala, who confirmed the latest abduction through a telephone conversation with our reporter on Monday, said the incident happened around 11pm on Sunday.

He said the bandits, who came in large numbers and wielding AK-47 rifles, invaded some houses and whisked away 22 residents, including five women.

“The bandits came in their large numbers as some of them wore army uniforms.

“They moved from house to house and woke their victims up before they marched them into the bush at gunpoint,” he said.

According to him, the bandits operated silently in the community for over an hour.

He added that they only started shooting sporadically to scare people from coming after them after leaving the community.

Bala however said one among the 22 kidnapped victims escaped from his abductors while being led into the bush.

The spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Mohammed Jalinge, could not be reached on phone to confirm the latest abduction at the time of filing this report.

Kano State Government has inaugurated this year’s Ramadan feeding programme with a view to alleviating the suffering of the underprivileged people.

Speaking while inaugurating the programme on the premises of the Kano State printing press, the state acting Governor, Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, enjoined the committee members to be just in the discharge of their assignment.

Gawuna, who spoke at length on the importance of feeding the needy in Islam especially in this holy month of Ramadan, called on people to take part in view of its relevance.

Earlier speaking, the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, said the government “has earmarked N550m for the success of the feeding programme in the 140 centres across the eight metropolitan local government areas.”

The commissioner added that the food items provided to ensure smooth running of the exercise include bags of rice, beans, flour, millet, palm oil as well as groundnut oil.

Garo reiterated the state government’s commitment to assist the underprivileged and other vulnerable in society.

A statement by the information officer, Ministry For Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lawan Hamisu Danhassan, said the council chairman of Kano municipal local government, Alhaji Faizu Alfindiki, commended the effort of the state government, calling on the members of the feeding committee to be fair and honest in the discharge of their assignment.

Chief Adaji who made the call at a press conference in Jalingo on Sunday said that it was sad that many members of the party who purchased nomination forms at exorbitant prices to contest for primaries of the party at various levels in 2019 were either denied participation in the primaries or denied access to the venue of the primary.

He lamented that the party throughout the four years never considered such members for any appointment or refund their nomination fees.

Adaji argued that since the new National executive of the party deemed it necessary to refund nomination forms fee for all those that aspired for various national and zonal offices but were not successful in the just concluded convention of the party, the same gesture should be extended to the 2019 aggrieved aspirants.

He said “we are pleading with the new National leadership of the party to consider the slashing by half for all those who purchased nomination forms in 2019 and still wish to contest for positions in 2023.

“Despite the injustice meted to us by denying us the opportunity to contest, we were not considered for appointments but we still remained and have been working for the party across the country.

“So such members desersed to be compensated with the reduction of nomination forms fee to half “.

Adaji, a former aspirant for House of Reps under Ankpa, Olamaboro and Omala Federal Constituency in kogi State also advised the new leadership of the party to ensure that there would be no imposition of candidates in the forth coming primaries of the party.

According to Adaji, imposition of candidates would spell doom for the party in the 2023 general elections.

FG Has Spent N157bn To Fund Second Niger Bridge So Far, Says Minister Of Finance

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, has disclosed that the federal government has so far released N157bn for the Second Niger Bridge project.

The minister disclosed this while on an inspection of the site along with the Chairman, Board of Directors of the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Mr Farouk Gumel, and the NSIA Managing Director, Uche Orji on Saturday.

The project is being implemented by the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority with funding from the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund.

It is being constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and involves the construction of a 1.6km bridge over the River Niger, scheduled for completion in August 2022; construction of two secondary bridges at CH25+166 (Amakom village road) and CH28+304 (Atani road) spanning 21.7m each, which have now been completed.

Others are the demolition of the existing flyover and construction of a new interchange at CH34+100 (Onitsha-Owerri road), scheduled for completion in August 2022.

Speaking shortly after the inspection, the finance minister said: “Today is a very significant day in the construction circle of the second Niger Bridge, this is one of the most iconic projects in the country built at an initial contract cost of N206bn.

“Today, we have been able to fund this project with N157bn and I’m here to see where all this money is going. And also, the significance of today is that the two ends of the bridge are being put together and this is the final phase of the work in truly completing the project and the finishing work of the bridge.”

Ahmed said the project has been going on 24/7 and people are working in shift jobs have been created for up to about 20,000 people.

Commenting on the project, Mr Farouk Gumel, Chairman, NSIA said “The board is pleased with the quality and pace of work. Undoubtedly, the 2nd Niger Bridge is a vital piece of national infrastructure.

“At completion, we expect that it will serve as an enabler to cross-regional economic activities and stimulate growth on a national scale.”

Also speaking on the funding structure of the project, the NSIA MD said the second Niger Bridge is one of the three projects being funded by the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund.

The other two projects are the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road project and the Lagos-Ibadan express road project.
