Ngwa group based in the United States of America has called for power shift to Abia North in 2023 “in the spirit of justice and equity”.

2023: Ngwa Group In US Supports Power Shift To Abia North

According to the group known as Isiala Ngwa Family Association, Georgia Atlanta USA, Abia North should be allowed to produce Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu’s successor in 2023.

The group argued that though it might appear politically logical to contend that Old Aba Division should retain power to equal the number of years power resided with Old Bende, “it is morally wrong for Nde Ngwa to hold power for 16 years at a stretch”.

According to the group, “excluding the Ukwa nation from bonafide beneficiaries of the Old Aba Division argument is yet another injustice that the proponents of this narrative deliberately want to cover.”

The group in a statement signed by Uchenna Elemuo, called on the proponents of ‘Ngwa self succession agenda’ to consider the the Abia Charter of Equity.

According to the group, it amounts to insensitivity and greed for the Ngwa clan to scheme to retain power beyond 2023 when a Division in Abia North had not tasted power since Abia was created.

The group advised against any move capable of disrupting the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the state.

It urged Ngwa nation to rather support power shift to Abia North in the spirit of equity and fairness so that when next power rotates back to Abia Central, other would willingly support another Ngwa man to become Governor.

The Ngwa group accused selfish and greedy politicians of masterminding the Ngwa self succession agenda for their personal gains.

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Monday, ordered the Department of State Service, DSS, to pay N5 million to one of the lawyers defending the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, Mr Maxwell Opara.

The court, in a judgement that was delivered by Justice Zainab Abubakar, equally directed the security agency to tender a written apology to Opara and also publish the same in a national daily.

The judgement followed a fundamental right enforcement suit the lawyer filed to protest the alleged degrading treatment he was subjected to, when he paid a visit to the IPOB leader, Kanu, at the DSS detention facility in Abuja.

Opara, told the court that the DSS had on August 30, 2021, when he paid a routine visit to Nnamdi Kanu, commandeered him to a particular room within its facility for purposes of alleged bodily search, “wherein they forced him to remove his medicated eye-glasses, wedding ring, belt, jacket and shoes and accordingly left him shabbily dressed”.

He told the court that he was subjected to the humiliation of holding his trousers with his hands, wearing bathroom slippers meant for awaiting trial inmates and exposed to Air Conditioner inflicted cold for 3 hours.

Opara maintained that the action the DSS took against him, amounted to a gross violation of his right to dignity of the human person as guaranteed under Sections 34 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), as well as Article 5 of the African Charter on Human and People Rights (Ratification and enforcement) Act Cap A9 Vol. 1 LFN.

He specifically prayed the court for; “A declaration that the Respondents, whilst in the execution of their duties must respect the fundamental rights of citizens and accordingly abide by the provisions of Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and the provisions of the Africa Charter on Human and Peoples Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act.

As well as, “A declaration that the actions of the men, operatives and officers under the command/commission of the Respondents on the 30th of August, 2021 during the Applicant’s visit to see his client in their detention facility, wherefore they commandeered the Applicant to a particular room within their facility; for purposes of alleged bodily search, wherein they forcibly removed his belt, medicated eye-glasses, wedding ring, jacket and shoes, and subjected him to the humiliation of holding his trousers with his hands, wearing a bathroom slippers meant for awaiting trial inmates and exposed to Air Conditioner inflicted cold for 3 hours, are not permitted by law; even during bodily search”.

Opara, prayed the court to award him N50m as compensation for the infringement of his fundamental rights to dignity and a human person.

Cited as Respondents in the marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1018/2021, were the DSS and its Director-General.

Meanwhile, the DSS, in a counter-affidavit that was deposed by one of its personnel, Ahmed Magaji, told the court that depositions in Opara’s affidavit were untrue.

It told the court that it simply conducted routine security checks on the day Opara visited Kanu.

“That in carrying out these onerous duties, the Respondents emplaced various measures aimed at screening all visitors before gaining access into the facility of the Respondents on invitation or for official purposes.

“That it is the practice by the Respondents that all visitors entering the office submit their phones and all other electronic digital devices for security purposes

“That the Respondents carry out security screening of all visitors through a scanning machine to avoid breach of security and to detect harmful or dangerous objects gaining entry into the Respondents’ facility.

“That contrary to paragraph 19 of the Applicant’s deposition, the Applicant only underwent the usual security search as applicable to visitors from taking harmful or dangerous items into the Respondent facility.

“That contrary to the Applicant’s deposition that he moved around barefooted, the Respondent only carry out security search and Covid-19 safety measures on all visitors and the Applicant inclusive which does not in any way include walking on barefoot, removal of belt, etc, as claimed by the Applicant”.

Denying allegation that it harassed the Applicant, DSS, told the court that it carried out its “normal security search”, saying it was done, “in line with professional standard to avoid harmful or dangerous objects finding its way into the Respondents’ office”.

In her judgement on Monday, Justice Abubakar granted all the reliefs the Applicant sought in the suit, though she reduced the damages from N50m to N5m.

Speaking from Bucha to reporters on Monday, Zelensky said it is “very important to us that the press is here” in the town.

“We want you to show the world what happened here. What the Russian military did. What the Russian Federation did in peaceful Ukraine. It was important for you to see that these were civilians,” the president added.

Shocking images of civilian bodies found strewn across a street in Bucha have sparked international outrage. The Kremlin questioned the reports regarding Bucha on Monday, rejecting all accusations of Russian military involvement.

The European Union on Monday announced it has established a joint investigation team with Ukraine to probe alleged Russian war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Zelensky told reporters Monday that the present situation a “matter of life and death and torture,” stressing Ukraine’s commitment for finding those responsible for the atrocities.

“We are going to put maximum pressure. We shall not pause for one minute to find all the criminals and I think this will benefit civilization,” Zelensky continued.

He warned that “if we don’t find a civilized solution,” the Ukrainian people “will find a non-civilized solution” to deal with matters.

He addressed the cameras around him briefly, saying that it was “very difficult” for Ukraine to negotiate with Russia following the atrocities carried out by Russian forces in Bucha. Zelensky said the atrocities carried out in the town typify “the nature of the Russian military” and added that they “treat people worse than animals.”

“It’s very difficult to negotiate when you see what they have done here,” the president emphasized as he stood in the town, surrounded by security.

He warned that “the longer the Russian Federation delays” talks with Ukraine the worse the situation becomes.

Wearing a flak jacket and surrounded by security, he talked about “key leaders of leading countries who made the decisions whether Ukraine should be a NATO member.”

“I think they should come here and see how these games, how this flirting with the Russian federation ends,” he said.

The Chairman of Russia’s Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, instructed his agency on Monday to analyze reports of civilian killings in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha, echoing the Russian Defense Ministry’s denial of any involvement in the incident.

“According to our information, in order to discredit the Russian military personnel, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine distributed to the Western media videos filmed in the city of Bucha, Kyiv region, as evidence of the massacre of civilians,” a statement from the Investigative Committee reads.

Shocking images of the bodies of civilians found on the streets in Bucha, following the withdrawal of Russian forces, have prompted an international outcry.

Ukraine’s interior minister said Monday that he expected the number of bodies of civilians recovered in the Kyiv region to number in the hundreds, citing preliminary information.

The Investigative Committee has a record of launching politically motivated investigations, including pursuing criminal cases against Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny. Human rights advocates have described those investigations as a thinly veiled campaign of political persecution.

The Kremlin on Monday again questioned the reports regarding Bucha, and rejected all accusations of Russian military involvement.

“From what we have seen, those videos, in many ways they cannot be trusted because there are signs of video forgeries and various fakes revealed by our specialists from the Defence Ministry,” the Kremlin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters during a regularly scheduled press call.
“We categorically reject any accusations,” he continued.

Peskov proposed a discussion on the incident at the UN Security Council meeting, saying such an initiative has been put forward by Russia, and blocked.

When asked if these accusations from the Ukrainian officials would affect the course of the bilateral negotiations, Peskov declined to comment, saying he had no update on the timing of the next rounds of Russia-Ukraine talks.

Western leaders have called for war crime investigations and fresh sanctions on Russia over the incident in Bucha.
