Residents of Rigachikun and Barakallahu areas along Kaduna-Zaria road were unsettled by a sustained gunfire by bandits on Wednesday morning.

ABN TV reports that despite the area being sandwiched between Jaji Military Cantonment and Airforce Base, the daring terrorists launched an attack.

This newspaper understands that the attack occurred around 1am, and the gunmen reportedly operated for about 4 hours.

A Human Rights activist Muhammed-Bello Buhari, said his cousins had to hide inside the wardrobe and under the beds.

For fear of being attacked or kidnapped, nobody performed Subhi (dawn) prayers in the mosques.

It is not yet clear if there are casualties or kidnap victims, but multiple reports said that soldiers confronted the bandits.

Wednesday’s attack followed the killing of least 10 soldiers by the terrorists who attacked a military base in Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Monday.

Many of the bandits are believed to comprise mostly ethnic Fulanis, including pastoralists and mercenaries from the region as well as neighbouring Chad and the Niger Republic.

Abia Guber 2023: No Legacy In ABSU To Qualify Prof. Ikonne For Endorsement — Chikwe Udensi

Ahead of the 2023 governorship election in Abia State, a leading aspirant on the platform of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA Sir Chikwe Udensi has faulted the alleged endorsement of former Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University, ABSU Prof. Eleazar Uche Ikonne by Ukwa-la-Ngwa political bloc, saying the former VC did not leave any legacy in ABSU to qualify him for endorsement.

Speaking on a radio programme, Open Parliament on Love FM Umuahia on Wednesday streamed live by ABN TV and Radio, Sir Udensi said information available to him indicated that the alleged endorsement of Prof. Ikonne to take over Abia governance in 2023 was at the instance of the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.

There has been agitations from stakeholders in Abia PDP, cautioning against imposition of an Ngwa man like Ikonne as the candidate of the party ahead of the 2023 election. Their reason is that Ikpeazu, an Ngwa man cannot be succeeded by a fellow Ngwa.

Sir Udensi said it would have been a different thing if PDP stakeholders had met to unanimously endorse Prof. Ikonne as its candidate, insisting that it is the choice of the governor which he described as undemocratic.

The Interpol Systems Consultant wondered why Prof. Ikonne was endorsed, stating that he does not have capacity, adding that the professor has not contributed much even to his profession.

There is nothing much to talk about in ABSU that he managed for years. It does not show enormous outfit to guarantee him unanimous endorsement.

“ABSU is entirely a PDP thing. A young man I spoke to who was in ABSU was not comfortable with the arrangement. Nothing shows that ABSU is among the top universities in Nigeria.

“Ukwa-la-Ngwa people, I have many friends from Ukwa and Ngwa. In fact the one from Ukwa told me that Ukwa-la-Ngwa is a fraud, it’s entirely orchestrated by political leaders. When it is time for election, you hear Ukwa-la-Ngwa but after election, it dies.

“When it’s time for appointment of Commissioners, award of contracts, promotion of civil servants, even when it comes to nomination at federal level, you don’t hear Ukwa-la-Ngwa.

“Why is it that it’s only time for election that you hear Ukwa-la-Ngwa? So he was telling me it’s a fraud created by political leaders to achieve political aims,” he said.

How APC Chairman, Sen. Adamu Evicted Journalists For His Inability To Climb Staircase To Locate Office
Abdullahi Adamu

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu on Tuesday allegedly evicted journalists covering the party’s activities, leaving them stranded.

The 75-year-old emerged as the national chairman of the party at the national convention held on March 26 through consensus.

The eviction of journalists from the party secretariat, which began as a rumor, was confirmed when the party began renovation work at the Media and Publicity office meant for journalists, which is adjacent to the press center on the ground floor of the Secretariat.

The journalists were compelled to seek refuge under the tree where they filed their reports as a result of the situation.

The ejection of the journalists from the press centre may be linked to Adamu’s inability to walk up the stairs to his office on the third floor.

Climbing up the stairs has taken Adamu roughly 20 minutes or more every time he visits the secretariat.

His inability to endure the rigors of stair climbing can be linked to his age.

According to reports, Adamu will convert the party’s media department and press center into his office, pending the installation of a lift at the party secretariat.

A staff of the party that informed journalists about the development said the party was “remodelling”, noting that that was the reason the staff of the media department and the journalists were evicted.

We are remodeling the secretariat, my office is also affected. As I am talking to you, I have no office now,” he said.

At the moment, the media and publicity department will now be making use of the National Executive Committee (NEC) office, while the remodeling or renovation lasts.

They have not provided any alternative for journalists covering the governing party.

According to PUNCH, those affected are two Inspectors, five Sergeants and two Constables.

A police signal issued by the Commissioner of Police Provost, Force Headquarters, Abuja, said the men were dismissed from service following their orderly room trial for planning and coordinating a strike within the ranks and file of the police.

The offenders were said to have been identified and subsequently arrested after their phone calls were tracked.

The wireless message, which was addressed to various state police Commands, read, “Be informed that following the conclusion of the orderly room proceedings of the undermentioned Inspectors, rank and file for the offences of discreditable conduct, improper conduct, breach of confidence, to wit: planning, organising, coordinating industrial strike within the ranks of the Nigeria Police Force; the Inspector-General has approved the dismissal from service of the following: AP/No. 245800 – Insp Nanoll Lamak; AP/ NP 287568 – Insp Amos Nagurah; F/No. 271367 – Sgt Onoja Onuche; F/No. 442680 – Sgt Franklin Agughalau; F/No. 495378 – Sgt Emmanuel Isah F/No. 508168 – Sgt Adesina Ismail; F/No. 508282 – Sgt Osoteku Ademola; F/No. 525839 – Police Constable Ehighamhen Favour Ebele and F/No. 528222 – Police Constable Ubong Inem.

“Commissioners of Police Commands and formations concerned are to warn the men accordingly, to dekit them and eject them from the police accommodation and facilities where applicable and revert accordingly; delete subjects from IPPIS payroll immediately.

“The Commissioner welfare to delete subjects from police nominal roll accordingly. Treat as very important.”

The IGP had been shaken by reports that his men were planning to embark on strike a few weeks ago over poor remuneration.

To forestall the plot, he dispatched members of the management team to different Commands and zonal formations to pacify the police personnel while promising to accelerate the payment of the 20 per cent increase in salary approved by the Federal Government last December.

The acting Force spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, who had denied reports that the police were planning to embark on strike, did not respond to the sacking of the cops when contacted on Tuesday.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State says Nigeria is at “critical crossroads” following what he called “multiple quagmires.”

We’re Aware Of Your Presidential Ambition But God Will Choose The Best For Nigeria, El-Rufai Tells Tinubu

El-Rufai said this while receiving former Lagos Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who was in the state, on a condolence visit over the bandits’ attack on a Kaduna-bound train.

The governor applauded Tinubu for cancelling his 70th anniversary colloquium in honour of the victims of the attack.

El-Rufai, who also said he was aware of Tinubu’s presidential ambition, failed to endorse the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, but said God will choose the best leader for Nigeria.

“This gesture by Asiwaju is a show of powerful leadership, empathy and concern for the lives and property of Nigerians. It’s unprecedented in our history in Nigeria. The government and people of Kaduna state will never forget this gesture. We are very grateful to you for service, sacrifice and commitment to the unity and that of our country. We appreciate your call for people to contribute to enable us rehabilitate the victims of this tragedy.

“We are aware of your aspiration to be president of this country, we look forward to further engagement so that we can progress that aspiration.

“Nigeria is at crossroad, critical crossroad, and we must take very difficult decisions to get the right leaders that would take us out of the multiple quagmires that we are going through. These are human challenges and they can be solved by human ingenuity. I pray for God to choose who is best for Nigeria, so that we will be the better, united, progressive and exemplary country that is fair and just to everyone.”

Tinubu in his remarks, lamented the spate of banditry and terrorism being witnesses in the country saying “Nigeria is bleeding.”

He called for a concerted effort to stemming the tide of banditry and terrorism in the region.

PDP Throws Open 2023 Presidential Ticket, Says No Zoning

PDP Extends Sale Of Forms For All Offices Again, Fixes New Dates For Screening, Appeals

As its mandate ends Tuesday, the 37-person zoning committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has flung open its presidential ticket to all aspirants; ABN TV has learned.

PDP Appoints Lau As Deputy Senate Minority Leader

The decision came after a meeting on Tuesday at the Benue State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja.

According to a source who pleaded anonymity, the committee threw open the ticket “due to exigency of time” saying “zoning, as in our party constitution, is affirmed.”

The document sighted by our correspondent read:

“Recommendations of PDP Zoning Committee

“1. Zoning, as in our party constitution, is affirmed.

“2. Inspite of (1) above, (the) Ticket is thrown Open, this time around due to exigency of time.

“3. Our Party is encouraged to always make the issue of zoning very clear at least 6 months before sales of forms.

“4. Our Party should commend the efforts of some of our contestants on the issue of consensus candidacy; the efforts should be seen to a peaceful and logical conclusion.”

On March 16, 2022, the party’s National Executive Committee, at its 95th meeting, instituted a 37-man committee comprising members from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory to recommend a zoning formula for the various electoral offices ahead of next year’s polls.

Addressing journalists at the end of the meeting, Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom said, “by the Grace of God, we have unanimously adopted a position that will be sent to the NEC of our party that appointed us.

“The good news for teaming supporters of the PDP and Nigerians is that we have resolved and every one of us-the 37 members, unanimously adopted the position that we are going to present to NEC.”

Although Ortom was reticent about the zoning formula, The PUNCH learned that the committee would urge NEC to fling open the Presidential race to all aspirants, irrespective of their zones.

Another senior party source who spoke to our correspondent shortly after the meeting said the party would throw open the presidential ticket rather than restrict it to a region.

The source said, “Reference was made to the 10 states with the highest turnout of voters in the 2019 election. Of these 10, nine were Northern states and only Lagos made the list. Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina had the highest voter turnout while Lagos came a distant fourth.

“Aspirants should be allowed to test their popularity at the primary election but if they choose to adopt a consensus approach, that will be acceptable to the party. It is a position every member of the committee was comfortable with.”

Recall that the PDP zoned its presidential ticket to the North during the 2019 general elections.

The party argued that the zone still has an uncompleted tenure following the demise of former President Umaru Yar’Adua, on May 5, 2010, who only served for two years and 11 months.

Consequently, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged presidential candidate at the 2018 primaries held in Port Harcourt.
