Declaration To Succeed Me Will Distract My Deputy But No Plan To Impeach Him — Ikpeazu

The governor while noting that nothing could be farther from the truth added that there is no substance in such rumor as he has no such plans and has never discussed any such issue with anyone.

The governor in a release signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Onyebuchi Ememanka says his credential as an Apostle of Peace and Stability are beyond disputation.

He insists that he holds the distinction of being the only Governor in the history of Abia State who has spent almost 7 years in office with the same Deputy Governor, stating that he intends to keep that credential intact.

He however expressed displeasure that his deputy went ahead to declare his intention to become the next governor of the state instead of focusing on his assignment as Deputy governor.

He added, “While the natural expectation of Governor Ikpeazu at this time was that his Deputy would have stood by him in steadying the ship of state as we head towards a political transition period, instead of being distracted by his personal political ambitions, the Governor however, as a true democrat, believes that such ambition is not enough to warrant any plans to impeach the Deputy Governor. This is why the Deputy Governor continues to be actively involved in the business of governance. He remains the Chairman of the State Committee on Internally Generated Revenue, in addition to managing several other areas of government business.

“Governor Ikpeazu’s disposition towards his Deputy has reflected in the great relationship he shares with the people of Nkporo in Ohafia Local Government Area, the home of the Deputy Governor.

“This relationship has manifested in the construction of the all-important but long-abandoned Abiriba – Nkporo Road, the brand new Cottage Hospital at Nkporo, and some other projects that have transformed the infrastructural landscape of the Community as well as the welfare of the people.

“The issues that occupy the mind of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu at this time are to continue to deliver dividends of democracy to the people of Abia State, tie up ongoing projects and guide our people to a smooth transition by next year.”

Chelsea FC Manager, Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel has told his striker, Timo Werner to start ‘helping himself’ at the club.

The German gaffer said this following the player’s brace in Chelsea’s 6-0 win over Southampton on Saturday.

Werner has really struggled to make any impact at Stamford Bridge since his £47.5 million move from RB Leipzig in 2020.

The German striker’s poor form led to the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan last summer.

Werner has scored just three goals in the Premier League this season and has been unable to secure a regular role in the team despite Lukaku struggling for form.

Ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid, Tuchel was asked if he has spoken to the striker to motivate him, and the former PSG boss said, “Yeah, but it would have been a long talk from October until April.

“At some point there are no words, you must help yourself. You sign for Chelsea, you sign for a top club, you have to live up to it and accept the pressure that comes with it. And you also have to help yourself.

“It means when you come on the pitch, you have to be ready when the chance comes.”

Former Nigerian goalkeeper, Peter Rufai

Former Nigerian goalkeeper, Peter Rufai has advised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint a competent coach for the Super Eagles that can restore the lost glory of the senior national team.
Rufai made this known on the backdrop of the team’s inability to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after Nigeria failed to beat the Black Stars of Ghana at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The former Deportivo La Coruña goalkeeper stated that the NFF must not be in a rush to appoint a new coach for the Super Eagles.
“It is very sad that the Super Eagles won’t be at the World Cup, however, we can’t dwell so much on it because there are other games or qualifiers ahead of the team,” Rufai, a former member of the Super Eagles that won the 1994 AFCON told Completesports.com.

“This is the time the NFF must ensure they appoint a competent coach for the senior national team that is capable of restoring the glory days of Nigeria in football.

“The NFF doesn’t need to rush when it comes to this issue because it will be sad if we still make the same old mistake again.”

They expressed their gratitude to God for his divine intervention even as a recent test showed she did not have the traces of the brain cancer any more.

However, the reason for the relapse in her health was undisclosed as she had been in admission in Abuja hospital for some time now.

Lawyer Backs Arrest Of Osinachi’s Husband, Demands Justice

An Abuja-based human rights lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has commended the Federal Capital Territory Police Command over the swift arrest of Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late popular gospel artiste, Osinachi.

Olajengbesi, in a chat with The PUNCH, condemned gender-based violence and urged the police to ensure that justice is served on the death of the 42-year-old artiste who died last Friday after spending days at an undisclosed hospital in Abuja.

Since the news of her death, Frank Edwards and Asu Ekiye, and other colleagues of Osinachi, who was a lead singer at the Dunamis International Headquarters, Abuja, have accused her husband to have physically being assaulted her on several occasions, and demanded his arrest.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, earlier confirmed to The PUNCH that Nwachukwu has been arrested.

“He is now in our custody. The younger brother of the deceased reported the matter and we have commenced an investigation,” the FCT police spokesman said.

Reacting, Olajengbesi said, “In as much as I commend the FCT Police Command for the swift arrest of the prime suspect in the death of the late gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, it is very important that the police ensure that justice is served on the matter so that the guilty do not go unpunished and the innocent end up being punished. A thorough investigation must be done.

“That said, gender-based violence is a condemnable action that is prosecutable. It must not be tolerated at all. Victims of GBV who are still alive should learn from the case in point and speak out, report to the police and take legal actions. No human has the right to kick, beat and assault any other all in the name of marriage.”

Leaders Must Make ‘Any Kind Of Effort’ To Ease Situation In Ukraine, Says Czech Minister

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky speaks with the media as he arrives for a meeting of EU foreign ministers at the European Council building in Luxembourg.

The Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavsky said leaders must make “any kind of effort which would lead to at least some easing of the situation” in Ukraine.

Speaking ahead of the EU Foreign Ministers meeting in Luxembourg, Lipavsky said “some humanitarian corridors” will help Ukrainians, but added: “On the other side, don’t be naive. Putin is a perpetrator of this horrendous war crime and those atrocities, and he should be punished for that.”

Nine humanitarian corridors were agreed for Sunday — covering the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia — allowing civilians to leave for safer parts of Ukraine.

The ministers are gathering just as the Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow — the first visit of an EU leader to Russia since the start of the invasion in late February.

The Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis remained cautious about the visit, saying: “I’ve seen a lot of efforts by many leaders — by Emmanuel Macron — to try and see whether they can talk to the guy [Putin]. I personally have no reason to believe that he’s talkable [to].”

Germany’s foreign minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized that everything must be done to clarify Russian war crimes in Ukraine, including supporting the International Criminal Court in investigating war crimes.

“What is clear is that Ukraine needs further military material, above all heavy weapons, and now is not the time for excuses — now is the time for creativity and pragmatism,” she added.
