South-East Must Be Allowed To Rule In 2023 - Peter Obi

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra state and presidential aspirant under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party has appealed that the South-East region of the country should be allowed to produce the next President of the country.

This was made known by Obi during a meeting with the delegates and other leaders of the party at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He noted that for the sake of equity, justice, and respect, a President of Igbo extraction must be allowed to rule the nation.

The former governor while addressing the delegates and party leaders urged them not to allow money and sentiment to influence their voting at the primaries.

Obi, who was accompanied by a former media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe, declared that Nigeria is in crisis and he remained the best candidate to take Nigeria out of the doldrums.

He said, “Let me assure you that my commitment is to build a better Nigeria, my desperation is to see Nigeria better than it is today. We cannot continue the way Nigeria is today.

“What we want to say is that a nation must be built on fairness, must be built on equity, must be built on respect for each other and we in the South-East are saying we too should be allowed to serve and I assure you that that opportunity will change Nigeria.

“No country with 33 percent unemployment and 65 percent underemployment will survive. 60 percent of the unemployed and underemployed are among the youths, the most productive population of the country and at their young age are doing nothing.

“Today, ours is owing to people pension, they don’t pay people gratuity. Our schools are closed, our universities have been closed now and nobody is saying anything. There are 15 million out-of-school children, and the drug prevalence among our youths today is the highest in the world. We must change the situation.”

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, former President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, and his Bauchi State counterpart, Bala Mohammed, on Monday, held a consultative meeting with the Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri.

Saraki while speaking with journalists at the end of the meeting in Government House, Yenagoa, confirmed the consensus-building on who will emerge as the party’s flag bearer for the 2023 presidential election was working.

The immediate past Senate president who is a presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP said they were also working to hold consultations with other aspirants from the party.

He said, “The consensus is working. We are prepared to meet all of the (presidential) aspirants; all of the aspirants are going to meet as a body.

“I know that there are moves already, some of the aspirants are also meeting amongst themselves. But the eventual thing is for all of the aspirants to meet. I think it’s easier when you are trying to reach consensus to start in blocs.”

Saraki noted that Nigeria is in terrible shape despite the propaganda of the ruling All Progressives Congress and it is only the PDP that could rescue the country and provide the right direction for citizens.

He, however, stressed that the PDP needed to be united in presenting a common front to wrest power from the APC in 2023.

The former Kwara State governor said he, Tambuwal, and Bala Mohammed, believed that although they had individual interests, “the interest of Nigeria is far greater than individual interest.”

Saraki said the consultative meeting with Diri and other critical stakeholders of the party was geared towards consolidating the consensus-building and strengthening the unity of the party.

Shi’ites Protest In Abuja, Demand Release Of El-Zakzaky’s Travel Documents

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria has asked the National Human Rights Commission to prevail on the Federal Government to release the international passports of their supreme leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, and his wife.

The group while staging a protest at the head office of the commission on Monday in Abuja, accused the government of gross violation of the fundamental human rights of the couple.

IMN said nine months after a Kaduna High Court discharged and acquitted the El-Zakzakys of terrorism charges, the authorities had refused to release the travel documents to them to enable them to access urgent medical attention overseas.

The group also vowed to hold those in positions of power responsible, if anything untoward should happen to them.

Speaking during the protest, the leader of the Academic Forum of the Movement, Mukhtar Abdurrahman Auwal, said, “It is well-known that the Sheikh and his wife Malama Zeenah are suffering from numerous health challenges that cannot be treated in Nigeria, and the authorities have refused to release or issue new international passports to the couple.

“The public is fully aware of the Zaria massacre executed from 12th to 14th December 2015. It was an “all-out-war” to eliminate the Sheikh and dislodge the Islamic movement under his distinguished tutelage, ‘once and for all’.

“Against all odds, the prime target, his wife and several other family members survived the arson and all that attack. Yet, no sooner had four soldiers “discovered” the whereabouts of the survivors in a laundry room than they started to rain bullets on them, instantly killing three of his sons, leaving the Sheikh and his wife ‘waiting to die from the lethal gunshot wounds. But the duo are still alive with multiple health complications, very much in need of urgent medical attention.

“Ever since the massacre, the Sheikh and his wife have been battling with life-threatening health complications.

“While in detention awaiting trial, there was also the issue of urgent medical treatment abroad. After incessant calls, protests and counsel arguments, the authorities reluctantly acquiesced to the medical trip to India for the prosecution to continue after the couple’s return to Nigeria.

“Unfortunately, the Nigerian authorities hijacked the whole process by trying to use doctors in India. Realizing that their sinister plan was botched, the regime quickly boarded the couple back, and then put the oppressed patients behind bars immediately thereafter.

“Justice was delayed and prolonged for more than five years but at last the court discharged and acquitted the Sheikh and his wife in July 2021. Following the court triumph, their immediate preoccupation has been to cater for their medical needs abroad but their international passports have been denied for almost nine months running now.

“Once more, they have to resort to the court but still the authorities continue to trample on the court procedures, causing unnecessary delay.
It is pertinent for the public to note that the freedom of Sheikh El-Zakzaky and his wife is still being denied.

“After patiently waiting for nine months, we have no option but to return to the streets of Abuja, to protest this unholy conspiracy. In view of the foregoing, we demand the unconditional release of the couple’s international passports.“

Sir Udensi Demands N5bn Damage With Apology From Publisher Of 'The Whisperer' Over Alleged Misinformation, Fake News

A leading governorship aspirant in Abia State on the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA Sir Chikwe Udensi has demanded a retraction, apology and payment of N5bn from online medium, The Whisperer News over what he called defamatory falsehood against him.

The online medium had on Monday, April 11 published a news story with the caption, Abia Guber: Chikwe Udensi Set To Dump APGA For YPP a publication Sir Udensi says is deliberately targeted at causing hate against him.

In a letter addressed to the publisher of the medium titled, “DEMAND FOR IMMEDIATE RETRACTION OF FALSE AND DEFAMATORY WORDS, TENDERING OF UNCONDITIONAL APOLOGY AND PROPOSAL FOR PAYMENT OF FIVE BILLION NAIRA DAMAGES” and signed by counsel to Sir Udensi, Kalu Kalu Agu Esq., he wondered why the media platform could not investigate the source of its story before publishing, describing it as a deliberate attempt to damage his character.

Accordingly, it is without doubt that you chose your words intentionally knowing that they are false and defamatory in the extreme without engaging in investigative journalism to balance your reportage on the said issue. Already our client has been inundated with several derisive calls arising from the fact that your words have attracted spite, odium and hatred for him.

“Our client is currently, on account of your misguided defamatory publication, losing teeming support base, political structures in Abia state (which he spent hundreds of millions of naira to set up), finances as well as business associates who are now pulling out from him because of your defamatory publication. Every passing day, our client is losing hundreds of millions of Naira as a result of your action,” the letter read.

Sir Udensi also demands that the publishers of the alleged false news publish a widespread publication of the clarification for seven (7) consecutive days.

He warned that if this is not done within seven days, he will initiate legal action and claim exemplary and aggravated damages.

Over 5,000 Debtors Owe FG N5.2trn, Says Finance Minister
Zainab Ahmed

Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed has said the Federal Government will enforce the recovery of N5.2 trillion debt owed by over 5,000 debtors through various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, MDAs.

Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this at the launching of the Project Lighthouse Debt Analytics & Reporting Platform, in Abuja, yesterday.

Ahmed said that the discovery of the debt follows a 2019 Finance Circular directing all MDAs as well as Federal Government Owned Enterprises (FGOEs) to provide the government’s credit portfolio in all such organisations.

She revealed that N53.5 billion has been recovered in the last one and a half years.

Ahmed said: “A perfunctory review of perceived significant leakages in government led the FMFBNP to issue a directive on 26th September 2019, to all government agencies in a bid to aggregate all government debts across all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), with a view to having a single window on the credit profile of government.

“Sequel to the issuance of the Finance Circular, the Ministry through the consolidation efforts of the project, has been able to aggregate monumental debts of approximately N5.2 trillion.

“These debts came to the spotlight from data aggregated from over 5,000+ debtors across 10 MDAs. Working in collaboration with the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), we have been able to recover N53.5 billion within the last 12-18 month, through the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) as a recovery touchpoint.

“However, to consolidate on the current effort of this project, a Debt Recovery Application has been built to be monitored by the new Debt Recovery Unit. The Debt Recovery Unit will capitalise on the effort made by the project consultants to provide the government with up-to-date records into its credit status by harmonising debt records across all MDAs within the country, give debtors access to a platform to view and offset debt in a seamless and secured manner as well as strengthen the institutional framework for enforcement and management of the Federal Debt Recovery plan.”

The Minister charged officials of federal government MDAs and FGOEs to cooperate with her ministry in order to make the initiative successful.

She said, “It is worth noting that the usefulness of this platform for our revenue generation effort will be dependent on your cooperation and commitment in providing quality and relevant debt-related information to populate the platform.

“It is also our belief that your organisation stands to benefit immensely from the intelligence that Project Lighthouse will be producing.

“To this end, I want to use the opportunity to urge all FGOEs and MDAs to update their list of debtors on a month-on-month basis against the Project Lighthouse debt recovery portfolio. This also encompasses the development of an institutional framework for enforcement, recovery, and management of the fiscal environment.”
