UCL: Atletico Madrid Seek To Bounce Back Against Man City After One-Goal Deficit

0

Atletico Madrid will be hoping to turn a one-goal deficit against Premier League champions, Manchester City in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie at the Wanda Metropolitano tonight (Wednesday).

Atletico Madrid come into the all-important second leg on the back of a 1-0 defeat against relegation-battlers Mallorca. They surrendered the opportunity to climb up to second in the table as Mallorca completed a double over Los Rojiblancos.

However, returning to home comforts at the Wanda Metropolitano also spells optimism for Atletico, who have won each of their last three in the league there, but not since October 2020 have Simeone’s side won a Champions League match at home – drawing four and losing three since.

The fact that Atleti have never lost a European knockout tie at home to an English club would fill most teams with dread, but Manchester City are no ordinary English club, and it would be a huge shock were Guardiola’s men not to build on their one-goal advantage and progress to the next stage of the competition.

On the other hand, Manchester City had a huge encounter this weekend as they faced Liverpool in a potential Premier League title decider. At the end of it all, the Cityzens preserved their one-point lead at the top of the table with the match finishing 2-2.

With seven matches now left in the Premier League season, Guardiola’s men have a great opportunity to successfully defend their title.

While City are pursuing a possible treble, Atletico’s only chance to win the silverware comes through the Champions League.

Possible Starting Lineup:

Atletico Madrid: Oblak; Savic, Felipe, Reinildo; Vrsaljko, Llorente, Koke, Lemar, Lodi; Griezmann, Felix

Manchester City: Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Ake; Gundogan, Rodri, De Bruyne; Mahrez, Foden, Sterling

I Contested Four Times Before Winning Governorship Election — Atiku

Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that he contested the governorship position four different times before he finally won in 1999.

Atiku made this revelation on Tuesday while having an interaction with leaders of over 200 support groups across the country, in Abuja.

Addressing the leaders of the groups, Atiku said that he was delighted that more young people were now participating in politics, adding that his dream was to mentor the young generation and hand over his political structure to them.

He urged youths to be consistent and courageous in pursuing their aspirations.

“It is encouraging that these days I see many young people come to me declaring intentions to run for various political positions, some state assemblies, some national assembly, and even some aspiring to be governors.

“The beautiful thing is that this shows that our democracy is being strengthened. I also started early like many of you.

“I started in my late 30s. During our time, our direction was to fight the military and return the country to civil rule.

“In joining politics, you have to be focused, principled and courageous. For example, I contested for the governorship position four times before I was finally elected. That is politics for you. You have to be determined and courageous,” he said.

Atiku expressed gratitude to the leaders of the support groups for the roles that they played during the 2018/2019 election and commended the groups for their discipline and their determination to be better organised than the last outing.

“We are more organised now; it is a reflection of the fact that we are now more experienced and with experience comes more knowledge.

“What that means is that if there was any mistake that we made last time, we are in a better position to avoid such mistakes now.”

Earlier, the National Coordinator of the Atiku Abubakar Technical Support Team, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, challenged the members of the group to tour the country and meet all the stakeholders in the party.

He encouraged them to engage in all necessary lobby to ensure that the aspiration of the Atiku would become a reality.

I Will Deal With Insecurity, Provide Good Governance To Nigerians If Elected As President — Amaechi

"Choose Me" – Amaechi Asks APC Delegates NOT To Waste Their Votes

Minister of transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi said if elected the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential flag bearer and president of Nigeria in the general election, he would bring his wealth of experience to bear in securing the country, and advancing the economy.

Amaechi stated this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Katsina State governor Aminu Bello Masari at the Katsina State Government House.

The minister, who is one of the presidential aspirants in the ruling APC said having been in public office for over two decades, he possessed the requisite knowledge and technical know-how to tackle insecurity and provide better governance for Nigerians.

Amaechi, while also recounting his achievements as Rivers State governor, said he was able to tackle insecurity, champion development and stabilise the Rivers State economy, assuring that such feat would be replicated if he is elected president.

He said, “Your excellency, you are the first governor I am visiting after declaring to run for the president of Nigeria in 2023. I will visit others as I progress with my consultations. I have visited three to four Emirates, two in the area you superintend over, and two in Kano. I have come to also brief you on how far we have gone with the railway assignment given to us by Mr. President. And the third reason is to tell you that I am interested to run for the office of the president of Nigeria.

“I think I am qualified, and I happen to be the only aspirant in the race who governed a state where there was militancy. So, I have experience of how to manage militancy.”

Between six months and one year of occupying the office of governor of the state, the militancy reduced tremendously. Schools were opened, market women were able to go back to the markets, kidnapping reduced drastically and business returned.

“Foreign companies came back, Shell reopened, in fact by the time I was leaving, Total was trying to transfer their headquarters to Port Harcourt. Unfortunately, when I left, they couldn’t manage it, so Total moved back to Abuja. But LNG returned their headquarters to Port Harcourt during my tenure as governor, Shell relocated their headquarters to Port Harcourt. So, we have experience, for somebody who has been in office for eight years as Governor, eight years as speaker, seven years as minister, I chaired the governor’s forum, I chaired the speakers’ forum, I also was the director general of the campaign of president Buhari twice. I would bring that experience to bear if given the opportunity.

“For me, the governors are critical in getting that opportunity and there’s need to talk to your colleagues to assist us to achieve that objective,” Amaechi said.

Responding, Governor Masari said he had no doubt about the minister’s leadership qualities. He also used the occasion to wish him well in his political aspiration.

“To me, you are not a person that needs any introduction. We have come a long way. I have no doubt in your character and in your ability and in your inclusiveness. We have discussed this privately, now you have come to formally declare your intention to contest for the office of the president of your country, which I feel you are qualified, and I hope you will play politics like a modern politician, because the way our politics is being played for quite some time, there is need for change of attitude, change of approach, change of style, so that we should treat the current situation of today with today’s solutions, not today’s problem with yesterday’s solutions.

Abia Governorship: Traditional Rulers Pray For Mayor Igbokwe, Assure Him Of Support

The quest by Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, popularly known as Don Lulu to succeed Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu as governor of Abia State in 2023 has received a huge mileage as traditional rulers in Ohuhu, Umuahia North local government area of the state have prayed and released their blessings upon him.

The royal fathers under the aegis of Ohuhu Traditional Rulers council on Tuesday who met on Tuesday at the palace of the Chairman of the Council and the Diawa of Umudiawa, HRH Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu expressed appreciation to Don Lulu, businessman, entrepreneurs, industrialist and philanthropist for the courage to run for the number one political office in the state.

They made divine intercession for him and called on the spirits of the founding fathers of the clan to protect and guide their son in his political journey.

Chairman of the council, Eze Ofoegbu poured libation in agreement with other monarchs who pledged to support Don Lulu’s aspiration of being the next governor of Abia state.

They described Mayor Igbokwe as a worthy son who has impacted the lives of many not just in Ohuhu but in Abia state as a whole.

The umbrella body of all the youth groups in the South East, South-South, South West and Middle Belt regions under the aegis of Coalition of Southern and Middle Belt Youth Leaders Assembly, COSMBYLA, have called on Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo to jettison his Presidential ambition and support a South East Presidential aspirant.

The group says this will be in the spirit of fairness, equity and fair play.

The group while noting that it is the fundamental right of VP Osinbajo to seek election for office of the President, it insists that the current political calculation in the country supports a South Easterner to produce the president in 2023, adding that it is the only geopolitical zone in the south yet to produce the president.

In a statement signed by the President-General, Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) Hon. Goodluck Egwu Ibem, COSMBYLA insists the concept of equity and justice will eliminate bitterness, bad blood and suspicion.

The statement partly reads, “Though Vice President Osinbajo has the Constitutional right to contest the position of the office of the President as a bonafide citizen of Nigeria, but the current situation and political calculation favours the South East zone to produce the President of Nigeria having been the only zone in the Southern part of the country that has not produced a Nigerian President.

“The concept of equity and zoning is to foster unity and eliminate all forms of bitterness and bad-blood among Nigerians. Zoning the presidential ticket by the APC , PDP and other parties to the South East remains the only way to restore peace and unity in the country.

“Most of our youths from the South East zone have lost faith in the Nigerian project because of the way the people of South East are being treated by the federal government. The year 2023 is the ample time to restore the faith of our youths in the Nigerian project.

“Of the truth, it is morally wrong for Osinbajo to declare to contest for the office of the President now, when he is very aware of the political implications of his actions as a legal luminary.

“We call on him to drop his Presidential ambition and support a South East aspirant to emerge as an APC 2023 presidential candidate for the overall benefit and progress of the nation.

“Zoning the 2023 presidential ticket to the South East will bring our country out of the woods and a South Easterner as President will perform the magic needed for the survival of the country. Enough said.”
