EFCC Denies Arresting Obiano’s Wife Eberechukwu
Ebelechukwu Obiano

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has denied reports that Eberechukwu, wife of the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, was in its custody.

Online media (not Vanguard) had reported the arrest and detention of the former first lady of Anambra state.

The online media said she was arrested over alleged fraud.

However, when Vanguard contacted Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC’s spokesman, he denied the report, saying that she is not in EFCC’s custody.

Recall that her husband, Willie Obiano was apprehended about a month ago at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, after handing over to his successor, Soludo.

Eberechukwu had last week declared interest to contest in the 2023 elections to represent Anambra North District at the Senate under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has taken into custody Eberechukwu, the wife of the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano.

The former Anambra First Lady, who has been under investigation, is currently in the custody of the commission in Abuja.

It was learnt that Mrs Obiano was being questioned for alleged fraud.

Mrs Obiano caused a stir after she became involved in a brawl with a former Nigerian ambassador to Spain and wife of Biafra warlord, Mrs Bianca Ojukwu, during the swearing-in of Prof Chukwuma Soludo as Anambra State Governor on March 17.

She is seeking to contest in the 2023 elections to represent Anambra North District at the Senate under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

Her arrest is coming about a month after her husband was apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, as he attempted to leave for the United States, hours after handing over to his successor, Soludo.

He was subsequently moved to Abuja the following day and quizzed over the alleged diversion of N37 billion security vote and N5bn SURE-P fund.

The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said he was not aware of Mrs Obiano’s arrest and promised to find out but he did not respond to further inquiries.

Magistrate Court in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has, on Thursday, remanded a former President of the Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Oyekan Ibukun, in prison over alleged theft of funds from the account of the union, which now has new leadership.

Oyekan was the president of the union and a medical student in 2017, but was impeached for allegedly sponsoring a cult attack on fellow students. He had also, in 2022, allegedly transferred a sum of N720,000 from the union’s account to the bank account of one Bello Oyekunle Azeez on April 8, 2022.

In a response letter from United Bank for Africa, dated April 12, 2022, titled, ‘Re- request for investigation on account no: 1012121930 – Obafemi Awolowo University Students’ Union’, to the current leadership of the union, headed by its president, Olayiwola Festus, the bank stated that N720,000 was moved via internet banking platform by a former union executive with User ID: OAUSU.IBUKUN; Name: Ibukun Oyediran Oyekan, to Oyekunle’s Guaranty Trust Bank account.

On his part, the Financial Secretary of the union, Oluwasegun Abiola, in a statement on Tuesday, said, “On receiving the alert of the money withdrawn, I reached out to the President and Secretary-General if they received the debit mail but they didn’t receive any mail surrounding the transaction. Having raised an alarm about the whole issue, it got to some set of people whose aim is to talk down on the elected union officers or the office of the Financial Secretary.

“On Tuesday, April 12, the bank manager contacted me to inform me that the transaction was initiated by a so-called Ibukun Oyekan (Dr. Ibk), and he further buttressed that I should come over to get a detailed report of their investigation.”

Oyekan had, on Wednesday, been arrested by the OAU Security Department and transferred to Moore police station for further investigations. He was charged to court on Thursday before Magistrate A.A. Ayeni of the Magistrate Court 3, in Ile-Ife with charges of conspiracy to steal, and stealing.

Oyekan, who pleaded not guilty, was remanded in Kosere Prison, Ile-Ife following his failure to meet the bail conditions. The case was subsequently adjourned till April 26.

Ohanaeze Youths Urge IPOB To Shun Violence, Accuses Simeon Ekpa Of Working To Indict Nnamdi Kanu

Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, has urged the entire members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) to refrain from involvement in any form of violence, assuring that efforts are being made to ensure the unconditional release of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The group charged one Simeon Ekpa, broadcaster of radio Biafra whom it accused of acting under a cloak of pretence in favour of the enemies of Kanu through criminal activities to desist from what it called terrible acts.

Ohanaeze youths say this call is made following the upsurge in youth restiveness in the South East region, which it says is prompted by the emergence of the Eastern Security Network, (ESN).

The Ohanaeze Youth Council, in conjunction with the Southern Nigeria Ethnic Youth Leaders Assembly advised the leadership of IPOB, MASSOB and other Pro-Biafran groups to become ambassadors of peace in the Old Eastern Region of Nigeria.

They said, “No one should take any action that will result to further incarceration Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Simeon Ekpa should know that any more violent action in biafra land will lead to the delay of the release of Nnamdi Kanu. Umuchineke and Ndigbo all over the world will have no reason to believe that Simeon Ekpa is working for our enemies to indict mazi nnamdi kanu and make him to remain in DSS dungeon.’

Speaking on Abuja on Thursday, the National President of Ohanaeze Youth Council, Comr. Igboayaka O. Igboayaka advised Mazi Ekpa and all other members of IPOB on the need for the restoration of peace in the Southeast extraction.

In his address, Igboayaka O Igboayaka lamented that the present generation had experienced what he described as a snail-pace pattern of peace and unity, which according to him, has proven ineffective and inefficient in sustaining the Nigeria political developments, as laboured for by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe who, according to history, had wrestled power from the then colonial Masters.

Hear him: “Since 1966 till date, we’re aware that justice, fairness and equity have left Nigeria. After the Biafra- Nigeria genocide against the Eastern people of Nigeria, Injustice and Marginalization were promoted against Ndigbo. This singular act brought the rejection of Igbo new generation to be part of the country called Nigeria.

“Undoubtedly, this raised the call for Secession by Movement of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Indigenous People Of Biafra( IPOB). Since 1998 till date, there are chronicles of call from Pro-Biafrans groups for Nigeria to disintegrate.

Comr. Igboayaka stressed that the federal government of Nigeria had, over the years, deployed several forceful strategies in their bid to stop the agitation, but, however, explained that the present generation of the Igbo nation are bent on actualising a united nation through dialogue.

The address read in full, “At every point, Nigeria government has applied conventional and confrontational methods to address the call for the restoration of Biafra by the Old Eastern Nigeria, in order to secede from Nigeria and these methods have failed severally in the past 57 years. Therefore, our generation believes that WHAT WE DIDN’T ACHIEVE WITH VIOLENCE IN 57 YEARS: WE CAN ACHIEVE IT WITH DIALOGUE IN 57 MINUTES.

“Today, Southeast has become a semi-battle field as a result of how Nigerian government had approached IPOB when they launched the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in 2020. As we have been made to believe, from the sense of history, Gen. Yakubu Gowon and Gen. Emeka Odimegwu Ojukwu could have tactically avoided the event of 1966 to 1970 in Nigeria. Unfortunately, we the new generation and the present government of Nigeria have lost the sense of history; we are now making the worst dangerous mistake like Gen. Yakubu Gowon and Gen. Emeka Ojukwu.

“But fortunately for us, recently the Federal government has embraced the political solution to Nnamdi Kanu case, as initiated by Prof. George Obiozor, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. We, therefore, advise IPOB and any sprinter group to shun any form of violence especially at this Easter period, when Christians gather in celebration of the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

“This will also pave the way for peace as the process of the unconditional release of leader of IPOB is being perfected with Nationalistic and Patriotic approach by President Mohammadu Buhari’s led federal government.

“It’s also important that Federal government should heed to our call to withdraw every military operation, hundreds of military and police road blocks in Southeast that are raising security tension in Southeast.

“At this Juncture,we want to draw attention of the world and Nigerians against the unpatriotic statement of one Shettima Yerima Arewa Youth Consultative Forum President who on Friday, 8 April 2022. Yerima stated that, and I quote, “We Will Declare Northern Independent”. If PDP or APC gives Igbo man Tickets”. Mr. Shettima Yerima lacks sense of history and knowledge that today’s Nigeria is bleeding. Nigeria is suffering from a chronic political pandemic, and the vaccine to cure this nation threatening pandemic is the Nigeria president of Southeast extraction 2023.

“Therefore, APC and PDP presidential tickets are naturally and morally the right of Southeast presidential Aspirants which is an integral part of political solution to Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB case.

“We call upon Sen. Hope Uzodinma to lead other Governors of Southeast extraction to collaborate with President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Prof George Obiozor to facilitate speedy release of Nnamdi Kanu.

“In Conclusion, the Unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and ceding of APC and PDP presidential tickets to Southeast will heal the the(1966-2023) 57 years old wounds against Ndigbo in Nigeria Within 57 minutes.

“I encourage every lover of Freedom (Umuchineke) all over Biafra land to Remain calm as every meeting currently ongoing geared towards the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will be perfected Within 57 days.”

Russia Will Redirect Energy Exports To Its South And East In The Near Future – President Putin

0
Russian President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that Russia is looking to focus its exports on “the fast-growing markets” to the country’s south and east in the near future. He warned that “attempts by Western countries to squeeze” Russian suppliers “will inevitably affect the entire world economy.”

“It is necessary to diversify exports. We need to assume that in the foreseeable future, deliveries of energy in the western direction will be reduced. Therefore, it is important to consolidate the trend of recent years: step by step, reorientate our exports to the fast-growing markets of the south and east. To do this in the near future, time to identify key infrastructure facilities and start their construction,” the Russian president said Thursday during a meeting with energy companies and officials.

Putin added that there is no reasonable alternative to Russian gas, warning that if Russian energy supplies get squeezed, it will affect the entire world economy and have “painful” consequences.

“Attempts by Western countries to squeeze out Russian suppliers and replace our energy resources with alternative supplies will inevitably affect the entire world economy. The consequences of such a step can become very painful, and first of all, for the initiators of such a policy themselves. What is surprising here is that our so-called partners from unfriendly countries admit that they cannot do without Russian energy resources, including natural gas, for example,” he said.

“A reasonable alternative for Europe simply doesn’t exist. Yes, it’s possible, but right now, it doesn’t exist. Everyone understands this; there are simply no free volumes on the global market right now, and supplies from other countries — primarily from the United States, which can be sent to Europe — will cost consumers many times more and will affect the standard of living of people and the competitiveness of the European economy,” Putin said.

On Thursday, Putin also said that there have been failures in payment for export deliveries of Russian energy.

“Banks from unfriendly countries delay the transfer of payments. I will remind you, the task has already been set to transfer payments for energy resources in national currency, to gradually move away from the dollar and the euro. In general, we intend to radically increase the share of settlements in national currencies in the foreign trade system,” Putin said.

More context: Amid the war in Ukraine, the European Union is trying to slash imports of Russian gas by 66% this year and break its dependence entirely on Russian energy by 2027. A new, sixth round of sanctions is already being discussed, and some EU officials have called for action on Russian oil and gas exports. But a ban on Russian gas in the near term would wreak havoc on Germany, which relied on Russia for about 46% of its natural gas in 2020, according to the International Energy Agency.

At the end of March, Putin delivered an ultimatum to “unfriendly” nations to pay for their energy in rubles starting April 1 or risk being cut off from vital supplies. Germany, France and other EU governments refused, and they have not been immediately cut off.

Other adjustments include a cut in the provision for federally funded upstream projects being implemented by N200bn from N352.80bn to N152.80bn; an increase in the projection for Federal Government independent revenue by N400bn; and an additional provision of N182.45bn to cater for the needs of the Nigeria Police Force.

Buhari listed statutory transfers’ adjustments as follows: NDDC by N13.46bn, from N102.78bn to N89.32bn; NEDC by N6.30bn, from N48.08bn to N41.78bn; UBEC by N23.16bn, from N112.29bn to N89.13bn; Basic Health Care Fund by N11.58bn, from N56.14bn to N44.56bn; and NASENI by N11.58bn, from N56.14bn to N44.56bn.
