No Hiding Place For Looters Of Oyo State’s Funds – Gov Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that there would be no hiding place for looters of Oyo State’s funds.

The governor, who stated this on a Splash 105.5 FM programme, State Affairs, anchored by Edmond Obilo, said his administration remained determined to retrieve every kobo of the state’s resources stolen by some members of the immediate past administration of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state.

He noted that his administration had been able to bring about a turnaround in the infrastructure of the state and other key sectors because it blocked loopholes and wastages in resources.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted the governor as saying that his government was on the track of some chieftains of the APC in the state, who used a certain company to siphon between N12 billion and N15 billion of Oyo State’s money.

He added that the government would go after them and retrieve the looted funds for the people of the state.

He maintained that his administration took the bold step of plugging every hole through which the state’s funds could be siphoned.

He said: “Without blocking loopholes, we could not have been where we are today. First, we did verification for the workers and ghost workers, ghost pensioners were removed from the payroll. They were there before we came in but we decided that as an administration, we would not spend our time chasing shadows.”

Giving an example of how such loopholes bled the state in billions during the immediate past APC government, the governor revealed how about N8 billion Paris Club refund was siphoned within 11 months.

He said: “Let me give you an example. When I came in, I looked at how some monies were spent and I believed it was the Paris Club refund they moved, which was about N7 billion to N8 billion to OYSROMA.

“This is an agency that operates normally on a budget of about N40 million to N45 million every month but this money came in around November 2017, and in early 2018, they started spending the money.

“When we came in, we discovered they finished spending the money within one year on nothing. They stole the money and I know those behind the stealing and I am also after them right now.

“There is a company called Chinese Global. They said they are Chinese people but we know the people behind it. The company has been shut down as we speak.

“I asked the General Manager in charge of OYSROMA and said, look, your budget is N44 million every month and, in a year, it is less than N500 million. Did you employ new people? He said no. Did you give out contracts? He said no. But how were you able to spend about N7 billion in 11 months without employing new people?

“But he said the company supplied asphalt. And I said if the company did, was the asphalt used to repair roads without employing new people and giving out contracts? He said the money was moved from OYSROMA to Chinese Global and two other companies without any supply from the companies.

“As a result of that, I wrote to EFCC and reported the matter about what we are facing here.

“Chinese Global is also the company they awarded the Bembo-Apata road contract to, and the same company got the Ido-Eruwa project. But I said to them, ‘guys, you have Oyo State money with you. Go ahead and use the money to finish up the roads and they promised to do it.

“But as soon as former Governor Abiola Ajimobi passed on, they reneged on all those projects. And I said, fine, for me, as long as you have Oyo State money with you, I will get it back and I am still saying it again that I will get back the money for our state.

“The money is in excess of N12 billion to N15 billion.

‘’Those who stole it are not Chinese but from Oyo State. We know them, and very soon, wherever they have investment or property in the world, I will go after them and collect this money for our state.

“This is a promise I made and I am not saying it outside of what I have discussed directly with the people involved. Oyo State’s money will come back. Those who stole the money are the members of the APC who were in the government then.”

Valentine Ozigbo, Anambra PDP Guber Candidate, Joins Senate Race

Valentine Ozigbo, Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate who lost the November 6, 2021, governorship election in Anambra, has declared his intention to contest in the Anambra South Senatorial District election in 2023.

Mr. Ozigbo’s intention was made known in Awka on Sunday by Aziza Uko, director of Media and Communications at Valentine Ozigbo Campaign Organisation.

Mr. Ozigbo was runner-up in the governorship election won by incumbent Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2021.

Ms. Uko said her principal’s decision to run for Senate was in response to the clamour by political associates and people of the district.

She said after the governorship election, the clamour for Mr. Ozigbo to run for the senatorial seat of Anambra South began with youth groups and political blocs in the state.

She said Mr. Ozigbo had been widely praised for his style of politics, which was issues-based and devoid of bitterness.

“Mr. Valentine Chineto Ozigbo has accepted the call by his people, the people of Anambra South, and influential voices across Anambra to run for the seat of Anambra Senatorial District in the Senate.

“He is well-positioned to clinch the ticket at the PDP primary election slated to hold in May because he is the most popular and widely accepted aspirant,’’ Uko said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr. Ozigbo resigned his appointment as the President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Transcorp Plc. in 2020 to contest the governorship election.

His shot at the governorship seat in Anambra was his first attempt to get into an elective office.

This is as he advised women in abusive marriages to leave while they are still alive, adding that those who choose to remain will only be buried if they die as a result of domestic violence.

Apostle Suleman said this while addressing his congregation amid news of the death of Gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, who allegedly died as a result of domestic violence.

He said, “When I once said there are certain marriages that should break, there was nothing they didn’t say about me. That’s why I kept quiet now, or did you hear me say anything?

“But that’s what everyone is saying now. Somebody reach out to me, saying, ‘when you said it years ago they insulted you.’”

He continued, “All those women that their husbands are beating, don’t they have brothers? If they don’t have biological brothers, they have Christian brothers.

“If you are in this church and you are beating your wife, stop it. If she reports you to me, we will beat you.

“I will go to the police station and take permission before I gather brothers in this church to beat you.”

He added, “The Bible only said thou shall not kill, it didn’t say thou shall not beat.

“Only weak men beat women, men that lack capacity. How did you get the woman? You talked. How do you keep the woman? You talk. You control a woman with your mouth, not your hand.”

Governor of Bauchi State Bala Mohammed has directed the establishment of the College of Education in Dass local government area and promised that he will continue to work towards fulfilling his campaign promises for greater Bauchi State.

Bala Mohammed gave the directive when he hosted PDP stakeholders from Ningi, Toro, Warji, and Dass local government areas of the state for the breaking of the Ramadan fast yesterday.

He said, “We are grateful to Almighty Allah for bringing us to this Holy month of Ramadan with good health and peace in Bauchi State and we are grateful to you as our stakeholders for your contribution to my emergence as governor of Bauchi State in the last general elections.

“When we took over, Bauchi State was in a stage of total collapse in critical sectors of the economy and Alhamdulillah our efforts in health, education is yielding positive results. I urge our stakeholders for your continued support for the success of the PDP-led administration in the state.”

The governor acknowledged the good working relationship between his administration and the state assembly and called for continued working synergy for the speedy development and progress of the state.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, has joined the race for the presidential seat.

His media office stated on Sunday that the minister had been consulting stakeholders in his All Progressives Congress (APC) party as well as stalwarts of opposition political parties.

He is scheduled to publicly declare his intention on April 19, the media office stated.

It added that Ngige gave his explanation for consulting opposition political parties when he addressed his supporters at Amansea, a border town with Enugu State after visiting Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

The media office stated also that Ngige’s standpoint was informed by his belief that his aspiration had a cross-party appeal.

“I visited Enugu State governor as part of my nation-wide consultation. Even though he is in PDP, he is an Igbo man.

“He is a very realistic, discerning person. Don’t forget also that Enugu is the capital of the former Eastern Region. And you know that respect is reciprocal.

“Over the week, I also consulted some other Nigerians not allied to any political party. Therefore, I had to consult the Enugu State governor over my intention to contest and to seek his views too.

“He told me to kick the ball into the net.

“So this journey is not for APC members alone. Our brothers in PDP are easily agreed that I tower above some of the persons aspiring to the position in their party.

“I have no fear whatsoever. I am equal to the task. Even our brothers in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) will join us in the task ahead,’’ Ngige was quoted as saying.

The minister said also that his antecedents, stewardship as a civil servant, governor, senator and minister stood him apart.

“What we did in Anambra in 34 months, those who did eight years have not done them.

“I did 34 months during which I laid the foundation for the new Anambra. I didn’t just lay the foundation; I also took the house beyond the lintel level.

“I built schools, returned schools to the missions, rescued Odumegwu Ojukwu University from the status of a glorified secondary school – built structures there and secured accreditation for 15 courses including Law and Medicine.

“I rehabilitated and upgraded our general hospitals, including Enugwu-Ukwu, Onitsha and Amaku in Awka and restructured the state’s civil service and also introduced examination as basis for promotion.

“I built more than 500km of roads across all senatorial zones that are still standing today.

“I also inherited N42 billion debts when I assumed office. I didn’t talk about it. I put my hands on the plough and started working and cleared arrears of pensions and salaries, among others,’’ Ngige was also quoted as saying.

Ngige added that he had an advantage of being part of this government and part of the 7th Senate.

“I’m well equipped for the job,’’ he stressed.

“I plan to re-engineer Nigeria the way I re-engineered Anambra. April 19 is the date. Let all roads lead to Alor where the matter will be laid to rest,’’ Ngige quipped.

Fuel Subsidy Puts Nigerian Economy At High Risk Says World Bank

The World Bank has disclosed that increasing fuel subsidy puts the Nigerian economy at a high risk as subsidy payments could significantly impact public finance and pose debt sustainability concerns.

This was made known by the Washington-based lender in a new biannual report known as Africa’s Pulse.

According to the bank, Nigeria is projected to have a 3.8 percent growth in 2022, adding that as an oil-dependent country, weak oil production hampers economic recovery.

It added that the increasing fuel subsidy poses a high risk to the country’s economic growth, despite the increase in oil prices.

The bank said, “Growth in Nigeria is forecast to increase to 3.8 percent in 2022 and stabilize at 4 percent in 2023-24. Real GDP growth was revised by 1.2 percentage points for both periods compared with the previous forecast. Nigeria’s economy is still dependent on the oil sector. Oil-related revenue contributes 40 to 60 percent of fiscal revenue, while oil and gas account for 80 to 90 percent of total exports.

“Weak oil production, below the OPEC quota, held back the recovery process. Although at a slower pace than the average seven percent during the boom period, growth prospects for the Nigerian economy are somewhat bright thanks to high oil prices coupled with reforms initiated by the passing of the Petroleum Industry Act and the completion of the Dangote refinery expected in 2023.

“Risk remains high on increasing fuel subsidies, which could weigh heavily on public finance and pose debt sustainability concerns. Nevertheless, public debt as a percentage of GDP is currently moderate.”

According to the World Bank, the high level of oil prices will affect countries that are shielding the impact on their consumers through fuel subsidies, such as Nigeria and Ethiopia.

It added that the high cost of fuel subsidies, due to the increase in oil prices, may deteriorate the country’s fiscal balance.

However, experts have warned the Federal Government that the N4tn fuel subsidy bill would adversely affect the country’s economy.

The Country Director, World Bank, Shubham Chaudhuri, had said Nigeria’s decision to postpone the full deregulation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by 18 months might cost the country over N4tn in subsidy payments on petrol in 2022.

The World Bank country director, however, noted that while the World Bank could come up with advice on subsidy removal, its role was certainly not to dictate as it had no ability to do such.

Chaudhuri said, “With economics, really, you are not meant to make a political decision. What you are meant to do is to lay out what are the cons and consequences of different decisions.

“So that is what we are doing, we are just being very clear that this would come with a financial cost and the fiscal cost is the number, perhaps N4tn this year.”

He said despite the fact that the price of oil had gone up, the rise in global crude oil prices was not helping Nigeria that much.

Industry figures seen on Sunday showed that the price of Brent, the crude against which Nigeria’s oil is priced, was $118.11 per barrel at 5.06 pm Nigerian time, as it traded at the same rate the preceding day.

While acknowledging the damage done to Igbos by the Nigerian civil war, he enjoined the south easterners to rescind on their attitude of barring people from other parts of the country from owning properties in their domain.

He insisted that the policy was not only detrimental to their political strength, but also a deficit to the economic unity of Nigeria.

According to him, “The civil war wounds meted on south easterners is a weak factor to institutionalize policies capable of tearing the nation apart.

“I have people from across Nigeria in Iwo, including the South Easterners. They do not only have their businesses but also built their houses and own farm lands. Such is not only peculiar to Iwo but to other parts of the country, except the South-East. A Nigerian in Nigeria should be able to own land anywhere.

“The style by the South easterners is barbaric. Such is not only detrimental to their economic viability but also to their political recognition. As a traditional ruler, I can’t trust any South easterner as my President.

“You can’t be a leader on sectional interest. With such unsophisticated, primitive and uncivilized thinking, no Nigerian from other zones will vote a south easterner as their President.”

Kenya, Zimbabwe To Make 2023 AFCON Draw Despite FIFA Ban

Confederation of African Football (CAF) says it will include Kenya and Zimbabwe in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying draw.

The addition of the two national teams to the draw that will take place on Tuesday in Johannesburg is coming amid the FIFA ban imposed on them over government interference.

A CAF official who announced the development said Africa’s football governing body took the decision to include the banned teams in the draw in anticipation that the ban would be lifted before the qualifier began

“We have included the two countries in the hope that the bans will be lifted no later than two weeks before the first matchday in June,” a Confederation of African Football (CAF) spokesman told AFP.

Governor of Rivers State and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Nyesome Wike, has said the only way to end banditry in Nigeria is to vote out the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023 and replace it with PDP.

Wike stated this in Jos, the Plateau State capital, while addressing national PDP delegates from the state.

He said: “Banditry was never known in Nigeria until APC came. The ruling party gave birth to banditry and since then Nigeria no longer enjoys peace.

“The only project the ruling APC has given the people of Plateau State is banditry and killings. What you hear every day on the Plateau is death of 10, 20, 30, 100 people, this is unfortunate and unacceptable.”

He called on the people of the state to ensure that the PDP takes over power in 2023 and save the state from total destruction.

The governor further told the delegates that he was in Jos to inform them of his intention to contest for the office of the president, stressing that he was the only person who is credible and capable of clearing the mess caused by the APC’s monumental destructions.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Plateau State Chairman of the PDP, Hon. Chris Adukuchili Hassan, said Wike has been a friend of the people of Plateau State.

He said the Plateau delegates would consider Wike, stressing that it was payback time in view of the numerous assistance the Rivers governor had offered the party in the state.
