Staff, Pupils In Jubilant Mood As Sen. Kalu Commissions Newly Renovated Classroom Blocks In Arochukwu

The school staff made this disclosure on Monday at Arochukwu LGA of Abia-North while expressing their joy to the Senate Chief Whip, Kalu when he led a delegation to commission their newly reconstructed school building which he expedited in the community.

Narrating their ordeals prior to Kalu’s rescue, Head Teacher of the Mrs. Ejim Obioma disclosed that whenever it rained, it disrupted all their activities in school due to the deplorable conditions of the school building which she said further discouraged the children from coming to school. Ejim added that the pupils and staff also had to endure the heat of the scorching sun, whenever it wasn’t raining.

The joy you have brought to us immeasurable, that is why we are all gathered here, with the reconstruction of this building and the provision of learning materials, you have boosted the morale of these students. You have made them willing to learn and happy to come to school and as for the teachers, you have made us proud and increased our zeal to teach these children because you have made everything easy for us, said Mrs. Ejim.

Speaking further, the School gaffer who spoke on behalf of the staff and pupils stated that Orji Kalu’s dedication to impact in Arochukwu LGA made it seem like he is an Indigene of the community.

She said; “Before your intervention this building was so terrible that most of the students stopped coming to schools because the building used to be dilapidated with no roof. Both the pupils and staff get beaten by the sun and the rain, but you have reconstructed this school as if you’re an indigene of Arochukwu. “You didn’t only reconstruct the building, you also provided furniture, study textbooks, bags and other writing materials, we have never had it this good. The road which leads to this school has been so bad for the last 30 years but you have also built it for us.The school community offered prayers to Orji Kalu saying that they support him to become the next President of the country  in 2023.

Kalu in his previous address said the gesture signifies his commitment to improve the lives of his constituents in addition to other development projects which he has facilitated in the community. The Senate Chief Whip who has continued to receive torrents of accolades for the construction of massive rural roads , installation of waterborholes and other projects used the opportunity to advise the students to strive for excellence and remain focused on their academic pursuits.

He said; ‘Amuri and Amoba’ now have Borehole Water .  I run a “talk and do” type of government, one that matches words with action . I am not a Senator that does not say what he can’t do.

“You pupils must be ready to show nor seriousness in your studies and your willingness to learn. Don’t be deceived by the saying that Children of the rich are not serious in education because three of my children studied Law and they all graduated with first class. So you must put more effort in reading your books and make sure that you finish in first position. Your parents are using their hard earned money to pay your school fees, so you mustn’t let it go in vain by making sure that you perform well in your studies.

Kalu also lamented the discontinuation of the free education programme in the state which he implemented when he was Governor of the state from 1999-2007. He urged the staff to support the All Progressive’s Congress (APC) to take over the state in 2023 for them to enjoy  free education and other dividends of democracy.

Unlike before when I was Governor I ensured that we have free education. Unfortunately since I left you people have been paying to get an education. Aside from renovation, we have distributed free learning materials which include, school bags, text books, desks and so on. If you support the APC to take over the state, we will ensure that free education comes back. Check the records none of your representatives in the last eight years has one third of what we are doing currently in my first term at the Senate, Orji Kalu stated.

We’ll Kill More People Unless Ransom Is Paid, Terrorists Threaten After Killing 3 Persons In Kaduna

Terrorists who kidnapped locals at Anguwan Bulus in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State have killed three of the victims and threatened to kill more unless a ransom is paid.

Spokesperson for the Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the killing, saying “I received phone calls from some people this morning that 3 bodies were found at Dutse village somewhere in the bush. The corpses were evacuated to Saint Gerald Hospital. We are trying to talk to the Area Commander to ensure the safe return of those who are still in captivity,’ he said.

It was gathered that about two weeks ago, bandits attacked the Anguwan Bulus community killing one local and abducting several others. They also attacked neighbouring communities like Juji, Angwan Gimbiya, and Sabo GRA.

“The bandits called their community contact to go to a particular location at Dutse village along the Kaduna-Abuja highway to pick up the three persons killed due to failure to pay ransoms. The bandits called yesterday that they have killed three of the people they kidnapped and told us where their bodies were deposited,’ a source said

‘The terrorists called last evening and said since we refused to pay the ransom, we should go to a location and carry the corpses of our people.”

‘Before we get there, we learnt that Police had already evacuated the bodies and deposited them at Saint Gerald Catholic Hospital, Kakuri, Kaduna. We were at the hospital last night to confirm that.”

“The terrorists threatened that if the community and families fail to pay the ransom by Tuesday evening, they should go to the same spot and carry another set of corpses.”

‘Right now, we are confused. We don’t know what to do. We have sold all we ever worked for to appease these people but they want more. We are appealing to the Federal and State Governments to come to our rescue to save the remaining people in captivity,’ the source said.

Meanwhile,8 out of 20 persons that were abducted in Idon town, Kajuru LGA, have been released by their abductors after spending about two months in captivity.

According to a source, “they were released on Sunday after ransom was paid. They said we need to bring additional ransom before they can release the remaining 12 persons.”

‘We have reported the recurrence of bandits attacks in Kajuru and Kachia to higher authorities but they have not done anything concrete to stop the attacks. As we speak, there are several others in the kidnappers’ den apart from these 12 people.”

Denmark will increase its natural gas production in the North Sea “for a limited time period,” to reduce its dependency on Russian energy, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Tuesday.

Denmark is ultimately aiming to phase out its use natural gases to become independent of Russian supplies, Frederiksen added.

“We are convinced it’s better to produce gas in the North Sea than buying it from Vladimir Putin,” she said.

Despite the “temporary increase,” Frederiksen assured that Denmark remained committed to plans to end its North Sea oil and gas production by 2050.

Some background: Meanwhile on Tuesday, French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said France supported extending sanctions on Russian oil.

France has been attempting to persuade European partners to stop imports of Russian oil, Le Maire said, alleging that some countries were “hesitant” to do so.

Greek authorities have seized a Russian tanker off the southern coast of the Greek island of Evia, a spokesperson for the country’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy confirmed Tuesday.

Pegas, the crude oil tanker sailing under the Russian flag with 19 Russian crew members on board was seized near the town of Karystos on April 15 as part of the European Union’s latest sanctions, the spokesperson said.

They added that the authorities seized the vessel but not its oil cargo, and the ministry could not provide further details at this point.

Some background: The EU’s latest sanctions package announced earlier this month includes the closing of EU ports to Russian vessels. Exemptions were granted to vessels carrying energy, food and other humanitarian aid.

China Tells Russia It Will Strengthen “Strategic Cooperation” Regardless Of International Landscape

Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Yucheng speaks during an interview with the Associated Press at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing.

China says it will “continue to strengthen strategic coordination” with Russia, regardless of how the “international landscape may change,” according to a statement released by China’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.

China’s Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng expressed this view to the Russian ambassador to China Andrey Denisov during a meeting on Monday, the ministry said.

“No matter how the international landscape may change, China will continue to strengthen strategic coordination with Russia to achieve win-win cooperation, jointly safeguard our common interests and promote the building of a new type of international relations and a community with a shared future for mankind,” Le said, according to the statement.

Le cited a nearly 30% increase in trade between the two countries during the first quarter of the year, reaching around $38.2 billion, as a testament to the “tremendous resilience” of its bilateral cooperation.

The two sides also exchanged views on Ukraine, as well as other international and regional issues of concern. However, no further details were provided by the ministry.

Some context: In public statements and at international summits, Chinese officials have attempted to stake out a seemingly neutral position on the war in Ukraine, neither condemning Russian actions nor ruling out the possibility Beijing could act as a mediator in a push for peace.

Before the invasion, allies China and Russia proclaimed their relationship had “no limits.”

But Beijing has since been quietly distancing itself from Russia’s sanction-hit economy and has repeatedly denounced sanctions against Moscow as an ineffective way of resolving the crisis.
