2023: Afenifere Leader Tells Tinubu, Osinbajo To Drop Presidential Bids

Leader of Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has said that presidential aspirants from the South-West geopolitical zone including Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, should forget their presidential ambitions.

He said it was the turn of the South-East to produce Nigeria’s next President after the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in May 2023.

The elder statesman made his position known in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday.

According to him, it is an injustice for a South-West President to emerge in 2023 after ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo from Ogun State had ruled from 1999 to 2007; while Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, also from Ogun State, has been in government since May 2015 and would have spent eight years in power by May 2023.

The 94-year old elder statesman added that the South-South zone has also had a shot at both President and Vice-President positions with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan between 2007 and 2010 (as VP) and from 2010 to 2015 (as President).

Adebanjo, however, said for Nigeria to have another President, the country must first be secured.

The nonagenarian said, “Right now, is there a country for them to be President? There must be one country first before you can talk of an election. Is this the country Jonathan handed over to Buhari? Whether a Southern or a Northern candidate, let us unite everyone. We can’t get everyone united until we change this constitution.

“Are you safe? Talk about security. How am I sure that I won’t be shocked when I go to the police station, when electoral officers, soldiers, and policemen are being shot dead and I can’t travel to Maiduguri safely?

“All those who are clamouring for Presidency, be it Jagaban (Tinubu) or Osinbajo, they should assure us of our safety first, that the country is safe, that we are one, then we talk of who is going to be President. They should forget about their ambitions now until there is safety. Nobody can go to the South-East now, and we are all living in denial.”

Asked if he was supporting Tinubu, Osinbajo, or any President from the South-West, the Afenifere leader said, “How can I back a South-West candidate? That is not equity. Has Obasanjo not done so for eight years? Has Osinbajo not done eight years as VP? Has Jonathan not done five years as President? Is the South-East not part of Nigeria?

“We want peace and equity. It is the turn of the South-East. I don’t talk ambiguously. It is the South-East that the thing must go; there is no doubt about that but my anxiety now is that before we say, South-East, have we got a country? Let us settle that before we say the South-East is the answer. I am not ambivalent about it at all.”

Presidency: Prepare For Failure In 2023, Ganduje Tells Wike

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State has told his counterpart in Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, that he will lose the presidential election in 2023 but end up as a “good loser”.

Ganduje said this when Wike paid him a visit in Kano late Monday as part of his (Wike) consultations for the presidential ticket of his party, PDP.

The Kano State governor, who did not mince words in the viral video that surfaced after their meeting, told Wike that “At the end of it (election), you will lose but you will be a good loser.

“I appreciate good losers because they have the courage and since you are doing this peacefully, then you will live long to fight again.

“When your opponents, when those who are fighting you describe you as ‘wicked Wike,’ I listen to the speech across the country, ashe (so) this Wike is not wicked but this Wike is the wise Wike. So, I congratulate you, the wise Wike. Thank you and God bless.”

Earlier, the Rivers State governor had said he would probably have abandoned his presidential ambition if Ganduje had decided to join the race to save Nigeria.

“If Ganduje is running for the presidency, some of us will quickly withdraw our ambitions, but thanks he is not running and I’m sure he will help me to make it,” Wike reportedly said.

He added that party differences should not make them work against the country but come together to salvage the country.

Meanwhile, Ganduje has directed his Chief of Staff, Ali Haruna Makoda, as well as three other commissioners that earlier tendered their resignation to continue carrying out their duties.

The governor’s rejection of the resignations came in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Abba Anwar, which said he accepted the resignation of seven other commissioners.

The statement said the governor approved the resignation of Nasir Gawuna (who is also his deputy), Murtala Sule Garo, Ibrahim Abubakar Karaye, Mahmud Muhammad Santsi, Muntari Ishaq Yakasai, Musa Iliyasu Kwankwaso and Kabiru Ado Lakwaya as the Commissioners for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Culture and Tourism, Housing and Transport, Special Duties, Rural and Community Development, and Youth & Sports, respectively.

Buhari Talks Tough, Vows Not To Allow Anyone Distabilise Nigeria

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians to resist agents bent on causing a breakdown of law and order in the country.

In a statement on Tuesday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, he gave an assurance that no individual or group would be allowed to destabilise Nigeria.

“We have the land, we have the resources, and we have the people,” the President was quoted as saying at an Iftar dinner with governors, ministers, and heads of government agencies.

“But I do not know why people will allow themselves to be successfully subverted to destabilise their own country.”

President Buhari, who thanked the governors and ministers for honouring his invitation to break the Ramadan fast, expressed confidence that in spite of the current security challenges, the country would succeed.

On the forthcoming general elections, the President affirmed that being a beneficiary of free, fair, and credible elections, the introduction of technology and the Permanent Voters Card (PVCs) would make it impossible for anyone to claim millions of votes again in the country.

In his remarks, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, commended the President for demonstrating resilience and determination at a crucial period in Nigeria’s history.

“We have a leader who is not distracted by momentary challenges but has continued to commit to the renewal of our nation and we, governors, ministers, and heads of government agencies, are equally dedicated to building a better Nigeria, on your watch,” he said.

Noting that this year’s Holy month of Ramadan coincided with the just concluded Christian Lenten period, Governor Fayemi believes it holds enormous spiritual value on the benefits of renewal, sacrifice, almsgiving, forgiveness, and healing for the individual, as well as the nation.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma yesterday asked politicians in the country to play politics without bitterness and put a halt to bloodletting while seeking political power.

He was addressing State House reporters after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

He dismissed the insinuation that the government in power was sponsoring banditry, wondering how feasible it would be for the governors of Imo, Kaduna, and Ebonyi to be happy with the destruction of property and lives in their respective states.

Uzodinma said: “I’m no longer in doubt as to who are the sponsors of banditry in Nigeria. Those who want to make Nigeria ungovernable cannot be the people governing Nigeria currently. After all, we don’t have elections this year. Elections should start by next year.

“Nigerians should be more patriotic, our national interest should be uppermost in our minds.”

He said two bandits were arrested after the killing of an officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission and were assisting the police in the ongoing investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing of the INEC staffer working on the voters registration exercise.

30 Years After, Senator Kalu Constructs Abandoned Roads In Arochukwu

Kenneth Udeh

Relief has come the way of Aro residents in Arochukwu LGA of Abia-North as Senator Orji Uzor Kalu on Monday commissioned two major communal link roads which he facilitated in their community.

According to communal residents the newly completed Asphalt 2km, 3km interlink roads have been neglected for 30 years, with the road having a negative impact on the communities within the axis. The newly commissioned Asphalt roads form part of the 53 road projects expedited by Kalu, the Senate Chief Whip to the rural communities in Abia-North Senatorial District, some of which were recently inaugurated by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan.

Addressing a Jubilant gathering during the commissioning ceremony, Senator Orji Kalu who was also a former Governor of the state 23 years ago explained that the road ought to have been built during his tenure as Governor but for the paucity of funds allocated to states as at that period of time. The Senate Chief Whip however, praised President Buhari for full implementation of the Nation’s budget. Kalu also thanked Buhari for acceding to his request to pay special attention to Abia-North as a reward for voting massively for the President during the 2019 Presidential elections.

Kalu said; “I thank President Buharifor making the realization of these projects possible . Abia North voted massively for President Buhari and now they are reaping its dividends. There is a saying that it will take a long distance to get to Aro but I will make it nearer when I’m done with the number of road projects which I will facilitate in this town. The truth is President Buhari is the brain behind the funding of these projects through the sovereign wealth fund.

“The narrative that President Buhari dislikes the Igbos is false, because these projects were made possible through him , so he is a great man. For the first time in the history of this country under President Buhari’s Dispensation our nation’s budget runs a complete cycle at 99% and he has ensured that every penny is released for implementation in the various sectors of our economy.

“This road is just the beginning because we have more projects for Arochukwu in this year’s budget. Politics aside I have a personal relationship with President Buhari for over 30 years , after the 2019 General elections I met with President Buhari and I told him that he must compensate Abia-North for voting massively for him because its on record that we the only Senatorial zone zone in the South-East and South-South that gave Buhari 68 per cent votes in the 2019 general elections.

Shedding more light on the state of other uncompleted roads in the community, Kalu a first time Senator explained that the Arochukwu to Ihechiowa roads hasn’t been completed due to the death of a former contractor who was initially awarded the road contract by the Federal Government, making it hard to br re-awarded to a new contractor. However, disclosed that he had a serious discussion with the Minister for works, Babatunde Fashola to resolve the matter to expedite the construction of the road.

The thrilled Residents in their separate addresses heaped praises on Senator Orji Kalu and President Muhammadu Buhari, just as they said that Kalu had made them realise that Legislatures had the capacity to facilitate infrastructural projects.

Hon Daniel Okeke a House of Representative Aspirant said , “we never knew Senators can build roads and also facilitate other key developmental projects; but we have a Senator who has made sure that indeed Senators can build roads. Be rest assured that your votes in Arochukwu are secured, just go and rest because we are solidly behind you.

President OUK for President, Joseph Udonkwo on his part said;” we travelled all the way from Akwa-Ibom to see for ourselves what we have been hearing about your good works in Abia-North. You have set the pace with your track record. There have been Governors in this state but none can match our record, in your first time at the Senate , you have done what others cannot do. If the Presidency is zoned to the South-east, you stand as No1 amongst others.

Another community stakeholder Ambassador Onu while thanking Kalu , recounted the difficulties experienced by the community prior to Kalu’s intervention.
“For 30 years this road was not motorable, motorists had to use other longer routes to get access to the right destinations which takes a longer period of time. But now the road has been constructed we can now drive smoothly. Orji Kalu told me specifically that he was going to construct this road if elected and in less than 3 years after election he had fulfilled his promise, he said”.

Principal Technical Secondary School, Arochukwu, Mrs. Comfort Onwuchekwa, expressed her gratitude to the Senate Chief Whip for his infrastructural projects which she said has been extended to the area of Education.

Her words” This road is in addition to your works in the area of Education, we are grateful for the textbooks , school bags and other learning materials that you have supplied to all the schools in Abia-North. We are grateful on behalf of all the Teachers. I say thank you.
