Assistant Commissioner Of Police Slumps, Dies In Office In Bayelsa

An Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration in the Bayelsa State Police Command, ACP Emmanuel Idowu Asufi, slumped and died while performing official duty on Tuesday.

ACP Asufi was said to have collapsed and died at the Police headquarters in Ovom community, Yenagoa, on Tuesday afternoon.

The sudden death of the police chief threw the fold of the Bayelsa Police Command into shock.

The deceased was an indigene of Ekwani community in Delta State. He was the ACP in charge of Administration at the State Police Command.

When journalists visited the police state command on Wednesday, the mood was solemn.

Many police personnel, who worked with the deceased, expressed shock over his sudden demise.

An officer attached to Operation Puff Adder in Bayelsa told journalists, “it was shocking. Many of us saw him come into the headquarters smiling and exchanging pleasantries with everyone including the rank and file. But we were shocked when an alarm was raised that he collapsed. They had to rush him to the Federal Medical Centre, where he was confirmed dead.”

Police spokesman in Bayelsa State, SP Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the demise of ACP Asufi, said it was a sad day for the command.

The deceased served as Chief Security Officer to the Bayelsa Government House and Commander of the State Security Outfit, Operation Door Akpor.

The All Progressives Congress, APC has pegged its presidential nomination and expression of interest forms at N100 million.

The party’s national publicity secretary, Felix Morka, disclosed this shortly after the 11th National Executive Meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

The nomination form would go for N70 million while expression of interest forms would go for N30 million.

Opposing an earlier announcement by the party’s national women leader, Betta Edu, that the women will get free forms, Morka said women are entitled to free nomination forms but will pay for their expression of interest forms.

APC, PDP Have Failed Nigerians - Gali Sule

Gali Sule, a Kano State governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Redemption Party has stated that the two major political parties in the country, the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, have failed Nigerians.

This was stated on Tuesday by Sule during a press conference in Kano.

Sule stressed the need for change, progress, and development in the country.

He said Nigerians had given all the major political parties in the country the opportunity to transform the nation for the better, but they failed woefully.

“Instead of the common man to heave a sigh of relief through their leadership, he continuously drifts into a big pit without sign that it will abate one day,” he said.

Sule said the reason why he chose to go on premature retirement was due to the rate of dilapidation and retrogressive tendencies in the civil service.

He said, “After critical assessment and analysis of the civil service, I came to the conclusion that since the system won’t allow one to correct the anomalies while in active service for one to bring all the necessary changes, I decided to tender my resignation and join the PRP where I am contesting for the governorship seat.

Sule, currently the President of the Kano State Science Secondary School Students Association, said there was corruption everywhere in the land as well as unemployment and insecurity that permeated across the nooks and cranny of the state.

He expressed optimism that the PRP would do everything possible to bring back its emancipatory policies so that all the economic and social ills bedeviling the state and the country at large would be squarely addressed.

He revealed that there was an urgent need for a total revolution on the existing markets in the state.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Ali Ndume, has described the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the best among the presidential candidate aspiring to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari on the platform of the All Progressives Congress in 2023.

The representative of Borno South Senatorial District said this when he was featured on a Channels TV programme: “Politics Today.”

He said: “I am one of those who had asked Amaechi to run.

“I started it.

“That is my project.

“I was one of those who asked Amaechi to run because I feel at this critical time we need a Nigerian to run, not somebody who will run based on where he comes from or region, not somebody who is not experienced enough, and not somebody who does not have the pedigree, energy, and intellect to run.

“In the APC, I feel the best candidate we can present is Amaechi.

“I don’t want to use the word that he is better than those who you listed.

“The best doesn’t mean others are not good enough.

“When you have very good people, then you pick the best.

“He is the best.”

Dubai New Human Trafficking Destination, Says NAPTIP

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has said that Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), had now become the destination of choice for victims of human trafficking.

Nduka Nwanwenne, Zonal Commander, NAPTIP, Benin Zonal Command, made the disclosure on Wednesday, in Benin, at the commencement of a three-day sensitisation programme on human trafficking.

Nwanwenne explained that against the norm where victims of human trafficking were transported by their traffickers by land to their destinations, victims were now air transported.

“This is because the human traffickers have stepped up their game, and the destination of choice of victims of human trafficking was now Dubai.

“Human Trafficking is not abating in the country, because traffickers make so much money from their victims so they take it as a business.

“The traffickers are now also concentrating on rural areas for recruitment of their victims”, he said.

The zonal commander also revealed that irregular migration was also been used as a ploy for human trafficking, such that its victims were being exploited for their organs.

“There is now an increase in organ harvesting not just for money rituals, but also for transplants.

“This is because the need for organs is higher than the supply”, he added.

While noting that the issue of human trafficking was still on the front burner, Nwanwenne said that there was a need for partnership to end human trafficking.

He said that baby sales/baby factory operations were part of human trafficking and that there was a need for concerted efforts to end human trafficking.

“As security agencies, we must be alive to our duties. We must join hands with the government to fight the issue of human trafficking. I must also advice parents to stop putting pressure on their children to go and make money.

“Parents should control themselves and give birth to only the number of children they can cater for,” he said.

Earlier, Segun Sanwo, representing the team lead for A-TIPSOM, Nigeria, said that the organisation believed that prevention was the bedrock of solving human trafficking.

Sanwo said that creating awareness was also a key to the fight against human trafficking, but that fighting the menace rested with individuals.

In her goodwill message,  Adefunke Abiodun, first zonal commander, NAPTIP, Benin Zonal Office, said that NAPTIP couldn’t fight human trafficking alone.

She said that everyone needed to work collaboratively to make progress, as the fight against human trafficking was a collective thing.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the sensitisation programme was organised in partnership with the Action Against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Immigrants in Nigeria (A-TIPSOM) Nigeria.

The programme was funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the International Ibero-America Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), a Spanish Government Foundation.

Germany will provide training and maintenance to the Ukrainian military, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in Latvia Wednesday.

Baerbock said that while “other partners are now providing artillery,” Germany would “help with training and maintenance.” Baerbock said that Germany could not provide further weaponry as the country had no weapons it could “deliver quickly and without delay right now.”

Speaking at a news conference in Riga with her Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkevics, Baerbock added that Germany had chosen not to make public all the weapons it had previously sent to Ukraine.

“We have supplied anti-tank weapons, Stingers [air defense systems] and many other weapons that we haven’t spoken about in public,” the foreign minister said.

Russian billionaire Oleg Tinkov has blasted Russia’s war in Ukraine, calling on the West to do more to “stop this massacre.”

Tinkov, who was among the 65 individuals and entities sanctioned by the UK on March 24 for “supporting Russia’s illegal invasion,” made the comments in an Instagram post Tuesday.

“I don’t see a single beneficiary of this insane war. Generals, waking up with a hangover have realized they have a s*** army. And how could the army be good when everything else in the country is mired in nepotism, groveling and servility,” Tinkov said.

The Russian tycoon, who founded Tinkoff Bank in 2006, wrote that “90% of Russians” opposed the conflict.

“The Kremlin’s civil servants are in shock that not only they but also their children won’t go to the Mediterranean this summer. Businessmen are trying to save what’s left of their property. Of course there are idiots that write the letter Z but there are about 10% idiots in all countries. 90% of Russians are AGAINST this war,” he said.

The letter “Z” became a sign of popular support for the war among some Russians after Russian military vehicles were seen marked with the symbol just ahead of the invasion.

Switching to English at the end of his post, Tinkov called on the “collective” West to “give Mr. Putin a clear exit to save his face and stop this massacre.”

“Please be more rational and humanitarian,” he added.

Other Russian business leaders call for peace: In March, Russian oil firm Lukoil called for an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

Oligarchs Mikhail Fridman and Oleg Deripaska also spoke out against the conflict in late February following Russia’s invasion.

Fridman, who was born in western Ukraine, said in a letter to staff that he wanted the “bloodshed to end.” Deripaska wrote in a post on Telegram: “Peace is very important! Negotiations need to start as soon as possible!”

Earlier this month, the chairman of the Russian metals firm Rusal called for an impartial investigation into the killing of civilians in Bucha.

Osun 2022: Political Parties Kick-Off Gubernatorial Campaigns

Ahead of the Saturday, July 16 gubernatorial election in Osun, State, political parties have in line with the electoral timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), started their campaigns.

From the Osun 2022 gubernatorial election timetable set by the electoral umpire, political parties were to kick off their campaign by Sunday, April 17, 2022.

The INEC timetable also directed that July 14 will be the last day for the governorship campaign.

It was also learned that fifteen candidates from approved political parties will be jostling for the number one political office in the State.

From the outcome of the gubernatorial primaries of the contending political parties, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be seeking re-election into the office for a second term of four years.

Also, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke, who was a close contender in the 2018 gubernatorial election, will again fly the flag of the opposition party.

A former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Lasun Yusuff will be flying the flag of the Labour Party (LP), while Akin Ogunbiyi is the Accord Party candidate, among others.

In the APC, the faction loyal to Rauf Aregbesola, a former Osun governor and Minister of Interior, which opposed the emergence of Adegboyega Oyetola has filed a case in the court seeking the party to present Moshood Adeoti, their own candidate as the gubernatorial candidate.

Also, Dotun Babayemi of the PDP is embroiled in a legal tussle challenging the candidature of Ademola Adeleke as the PDP gubernatorial candidate.

“History will not forget the war crimes” committed in Ukraine, President of the European Council Charles Michel said Wednesday.

Pictures posted to Michel’s social media account showed the former Belgian Prime Minister visiting Ukraine, with one titled “In Borodyanka.”

“Like Bucha and too many other towns in Ukraine. History will not forget the war crimes that have been committed here. There can be no peace without justice,” Michel tweeted.

Russia has denied allegations of war crimes and claims its forces do not target civilians, but CNN journalists on the ground in Ukraine have seen firsthand evidence of atrocities at multiple locations across the country.

Earlier on Wednesday, Michel shared a picture of his arrival at a train station in the capital of Kyiv. “In the heart of a free and democratic Europe,” he said.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said Tuesday that Russia’s aggression in Ukraine was “comparable to the darkest pages in our European history.”

He added that it was “heart-breaking to see that something like this can still happen in Europe” and that “that there can be no impunity for war crimes.”

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has said that Russia’s aggression in Ukraine is “comparable to the darkest pages in our European history” and that it is “heart-breaking to see that something like this can still happen in Europe.”

Speaking Tuesday evening in the Belgian town of Ghent, following a rare joint meeting of the Dutch and Belgian cabinets, De Croo added “that there can be no impunity for war crimes.”

He said that both Belgium and the Netherlands are “going to make efforts to ensure that everything is documented,” in the hope that “prosecutions can take place for the terrible stories we hear of rapes of women, rapes of girls.”

Russia has denied allegations of war crimes and claims its forces do not target civilians, but CNN journalists on the ground in Ukraine have seen firsthand evidence of atrocities at multiple locations across the country.

Iryna Venediktova, Ukraine’s prosecutor general, said last week that her office was investigating 5,800 cases of alleged Russian war crimes, with “more and more” proceedings opening every day.

De Croo said that the Belgian Government was supporting the International Criminal Court and the Commission of Inquiry set up by the UN Human Rights Council and was “looking to be able to send forensic experts” to Ukraine.

“It is the first step to ensure that the barbarians who did this will be prosecuted,” he added.
