The Senator representing Abia South, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe has said he is in the governorship race of the state to end the era of looting the resources of the state which he said is shared among some persons.

While stating that he will do the state proud if elected as the next governor, he expressed regret that Aba, the commercial centre of the state is in a sorry state.

He spoke during a meeting with the PDP delegates ahead of the governorship primary election next month.

The lawmaker alleged that there are plans to bribe the delegates from the resources of the state government, insisting that it will be drawback to the state.

Sen. Abaribe who spoke in Igbo language said any candidate who emerges from the process of bribery will pay heavily when elected through the resources of the state, urging delegates to shun inducement.

He alleged that the state has budgeted over N3bn to bribe delegates to vote a candidate of its choice, adding that it gives rise to backwardness, imposition and, corruption.

The former Abia Deputy governor alleged that the plan to zone him out is because he is a strong force, stating that he will contest the election against the zoning formula provided by Abia State PDP.

I said no problem, you can’t stop my right I will run and that I support zoning but that the zoning I want is for capability, capacity, integrity, zoning to people who are ready to work.

“How can we be in this state and the pensioners are not being paid, what are they saying? Is it because the state is not good? Is it because we don’t have money?

“Nobody can tell us that Ebonyi State has more Internally generated revenue than Abia. The problem is that Abia resources is being siphoned, it is being given to some people. We will resist imposition,” he said.

He appealed to delegates to vote him as the candidate of the party in the gubernatorial election, noting that they will not regret it.

Buhari Expresses Shock Over Death Of NAF Officers In Kaduna Plane Crash, Sympathizes With Families

President Muhammadu Buhari mourns the tragic and unfortunate death of two officers in a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) plane crash in Kaduna.

Reacting to the death of Flight Lieutenant Abubakar Alkali and Flight Lieutenant Elijah Haruna Karatu, the President said: “I am shocked beyond words by the demise of these two promising young men who risked their lives in the service of the country.

There is no reward big enough to pay for the services of these young and dedicated professional airmen in the service of their country.”

While extending his sympathies to the Chief of Air Staff and the families of the deceased, President Buhari called for “more safety measures to forestall tragic incidents of this kind.”

I welcome the decision by the NAF authorities to investigate this accident, but I also call on them to publish and implement the recommendations of the reports of past investigations into air accidents, with a view to preventing future tragedies and putting closure to the families and friends of the deceased,” the President added.

Buhari Directs Minister Of Health, Ehanire To Provide Update On Local Vaccine Manufacturing

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in Abuja directed the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, to submit a progress report by the end of May 2022 on the indigenous production of vaccines in the country.

The President gave the directive while receiving the leadership of the Nigeria Integrated Biopharmaceuticals Industries Consortium (NIBI), led by Mr Vilarugel Cuyas, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Fredlab.

The President commended the NIBI consortium made up of European biotechnology companies Merck, Unizima, Rommelag, and Fredlab, who are collaborating with the Nigerian start-up PIA BioPharma to establish a world-class Bio-Pharma Industrial Complex for the manufacture of vaccines and essential therapeutics in Nigeria.

Stressing that this administration considers food and medicine sufficiency as national security issues, the President asked the health minister and his team to work closely with the consortium on the Federal Government support required for the actualization of the NIBI project within the next few months.

‘‘While the Ministry of Health continues to drive collaboration with investors for vaccines, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, in a move towards self-sufficiency, I welcome the NIBI consortium’s desire to partner with the Federal Government in support of our agenda and look forward to the implementation of the NIBI project as it takes shape,’’ the President said.

Recounting the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Nigeria’s economy and health systems and how some nations with comparative advantages in being centres of bio-pharmaceutical productions adopted a “me-first” attitude towards securing their citizens, President Buhari said:

‘I want Nigeria to make a bold statement in this field not just for reasons mentioned earlier, but because of its knock-on effects on our economy at large.’’

The President told his audience that Nigeria has learnt key lessons from the pandemic, including that countries must look inward for sustenance in food and medical supplies.

‘‘Having witnessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our health system, our communal life and national economy, from which we are yet to fully recover, we are reminded that the wealth of a nation is dependent on the health and wellbeing of its citizens.

‘‘At the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigeria was quick to respond to what seemed an existential threat, by strengthening the health system’s capacity to handle the pandemic – an initiative that continues till today in collaboration with the state government, private sector, and international partners.

‘‘Key lessons of the pandemic are that nations can be brought to their knees by disease outbreaks that cripple national and international trade, and that countries must be able to look inwards for sustenance in food and medical supplies. The benefit of this Administration’s early investment in agriculture came to light during this global turbulence.

‘‘However, we cannot say the same for essential medicines, health supplies and most importantly vaccines to protect our citizens. Increasing the capacity for in-country production of vaccines and medical supplies has therefore become a matter of not just urgency, but of national security.

‘‘As we saw, many nations who had developed comparative advantages in being centres of bio-pharmaceutical productions adopted a “me-first” attitude towards securing their citizens. These actions placed developing nations, particularly those in Africa at severe disadvantage.’’

The President noted that as part of the fallout and lessons learned from the crises, under his directive, the Minister of Health has been conducting local and international high-level consultations to seek access to the know-how and finance to revive domestic manufacturing of vaccines.

He added that the consultations had become more important as Nigeria prepares to fully transition from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) support for the supply of vaccines by 2028.

‘‘Since we consider food and medicine sufficiency as national security issues, technical and financial investments and partnerships are priorities in our policy planning, with the assurance that Nigeria has the market and a pool of expert scientists to draw upon, from within and outside the country,’’ he said.

Buhari Receives ICC Lead Prosecutor, Says Boko Haram Has Nothing To Do With Religion, Ethnicity

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said that the Boko Haram insurgency has neither religious nor ethnic underpinning, and with adequate education, the majority of Nigerians now know the truth.

Receiving Karin Ahmad Khan, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) at State House, Abuja, the President added that with concerted public enlightenment, it had become clear to the people that Boko Haram was a perversion of religion, rather than Islamic ideology.

According to him, “God is justice. You can’t kill innocent people, and shout; Allah Akbar (God is great). It’s either you don’t know that God at all, or you are simply being stupid.

“To say Western education is unacceptable (Haram) is very fraudulent. That is why we are fighting them, and educating the people. And we are succeeding a lot. We came to office when things were very bad, but we are educating the people.

“Education is fundamental. Religion and ethnicity are out of it. Some people have just made it a lifestyle to cause confusion, destruction and death.”

The ICC Prosecutor said extremism was like cancer, which spreads and can also recede, noting that what Boko Haram does in collaboration with Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), “is perversion of religion.”

He said the ICC believes in complementarity, “which promotes collaboration, as against confrontation,” counseling Nigeria in concert with other Sahel/Lake Chad basin countries to get the United Nations Security Council to refer the atrocities committed by the terrorist groups operating in the region to ICC, for investigation and subsequently trial.

President Muhammadu Buhari has warned leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC at both national and state levels against factions and imposing unpopular candidates as the 2023 general election approaches.

The president gave the warning at the 11th meeting of the National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress on Wednesday in Abuja.

This is as the party reached agreements on the form it would use to select a presidential candidate and other matters relating to the 2023 general election.

Buhari said, “I enjoin you all to follow due process in all the party processes and more importantly to develop more mechanisms against corruption.

“I call on all party members to abide by all extant laws, rules, and regulations and to leaders of our party to avoid the imposition of candidates that cannot win popular elections.

“This dictatorial behaviour cost us many strategic seats in the past. In the recent past, this led to some of our strong members, unfortunately, opting to go elsewhere because of the unfairly oppressive behaviour of party leaders at the state level.

“I must caution strongly against any tendency towards developing cliques, in–fighting within the party.

“We want to win well not succumb to factions on account of personal acerbities and desire to retain control at all costs. That surely is not the road to win,’’ he said.

Interpol Systems Consultant and security expert, Sir Chikwe Udensi has reacted to the crash of military jet in Kaduna State on Tuesday in which many military personnel were feared dead, saying criminal negligence, fraudulent errors and inability to fix the right parts.

While noting that human errors are responsible for air crash abroad, Sir Udensi said most crashes in Nigeria are traceable to technical errors, adding that previous experiences and investigation outcomes indicate that sub-standard and faulty parts were used in servicing aircrafts.

Speaking on a radio programme, Open Parliament on Love FM Umuahia, ABN TV and ABN Radio on Wednesday,  ABN TV, the Abia governorship aspirant insisted that desire to perpetrate fraud and cutting corners is a major cause of air mishap in Nigeria, stating that it calls for worry.

He declined comment on the possible cause of Kaduna military air crash till a proper investigation is carried out by Accident Investigation Bureau.

On the recent burial of his father, Mazi Emmanuel Chukwuma Udensi who died at 94, Sir Udensi described him as a good man who died in the way of God, noting that he will be greatly missed.

He said his late father’s friends came from far and wide to pay him their last respect as he was laid to rest, noting that that is a testimony of how he built bridges across board.

He also praised him for raising his children in uprightness and decency, opposed social vices and ensured that his children stayed away from such.

Orji Kalu: Abia North Senatorial District Has No Vacancy, Group Tells Mao Ohuabunwa, Others

A group, Abia North Stakeholders has urged Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa and all those aspiring to represent the people of Abia North Senatorial district in 2023 to bury their ambition, saying no vacancy exists at the district.

The group is made up of traditional rulers, youth groups, professionals, academics, prominent members of the political class, and top businessmen who hail from the district.

The group says it is working towards ensuring the re-election of the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to continue the good job he is doing at the upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly.

The leader of the group, Dr Kalu Ncheghe in a statement on Wednesday said that indices showed that the incumbent Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu has performed far better than other senators from the state.

“The group believes that Kalu’s performance as the senator representing Abia North senatorial district is the best in the history of Abia State and Nigeria at large,” Ncheghe said.

The group appealed to the people of Abia North Senatorial District to continue to support the Chief Whip of the Senate, noting that Kalu was ready to do more for the district.

Ncheghe said, “Orji Kalu’s performance as a Senator is the best in the history of Abia State and Nigeria at large. We are bi-partisan. Our interest is the development of Abia North senatorial district.

“We need to encourage and support his aspiration in 2023. If Nigerians don’t anoint him as the APC Presidential candidate we will love to see him in the red chambers again. What he has done as a Senator is unprecedented. The building of roads, schools, and distribution of educational materials is the first of its kind in Abia North senatorial district.

“The bills, motions, and infrastructural development is the best we have seen since 1999.

“We should not joke with our best at this critical time. We need more development in Abia North. Therefore, I am appealing to all to continue to trust Senator Orji Uzor Kalu even beyond 2023 for more development.

“We are ready to refund money to all the senatorial aspirants from Abia North senatorial district. Kalu is the consensus of all including our traditional rulers,” the statement said.
