If Tinubu Leaves APC, Then The Party Will Go With Him - Adesoji Akanbi

Sen. Adesoji Akanbi, the National Vice-Chairman, South-West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA), has dismissed speculations that former Lagos governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu will defect from the All Progressives Congress, APC if he failed to get the presidential ticket of the party.

Tinubu, a former Lagos State Governor, is a presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress(APC).

Akanbi, a former senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District) made the clarifications assertions while hosting members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Oyo State to an Iftar in his Ibadan residence.

While responding to a question on speculation that Tinubu may defect to Social Democratic Party, SDP if he failed to get the ticket of his party, Akanbi said nobody can chase the former Lagos governor away from APC.

He denied speculations that Tinubu has a plan ‘B’ bordering on possible defection to another party, saying that he could not be chased from the party.

“If he’s going to another party, that means he’s taking the party along with him, which will not happen. As to the ticket, man proposes, God disposes,” he said.

Akanbi, however, said Nigeria needs a unifier like Bola Tinubu as the next President to further promote unity and peace in the country.

According to him, the nation needed a president, who could put the country together, irrespective of his or her religion and ethnic background.

He said that Tinubu had demonstrated this during his eight years reign as the Governor in Lagos State, adding it was evident in his cabinet.

“We need a unifier, someone that can put this country together. Tinubu is not Mr. I do, He is Mr. I have done.

“The diversity in his cabinet is evident enough to show that he can unify this country. This is a very important factor.

“We need somebody that can move this country from where it is now. Tinubu has the capacity to bring people together on the same table,” Akanbi said.

The former lawmaker said that they were not following Tinubu blindly, but based on his antecedents and excellent leadership qualities.

Akanbi said that all of them who had worked with the former governor have success stories to tell one way or the other.

“Tinubu has been tested. We can all see the transformation. He was just a governor for eight years, look at the template.

“This is a man who raised Lagos State Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from less than a billion to a comfortable zone, making the state one of the most economically viable in Africa.

“He had a challenge with the creation of local governments and the Federal Government refused to give him allocation. He had to think outside the box in which he survived,” he said.

Akanbi said the nation needed someone who could think out of the box at this critical period, adding that only political will, not brilliancy, could make the desired change.

According to him, nobody has demonstrated that apart from Bola Tinubu. Do you know what it takes to move from the region to a centre? It takes a lot of courage.

“He took a risk to sacrifice ACN to the centre and made a difference which you can’t take away from his archives. He made President Muhammadu Buhari’s dream to become a reality.

“We need a president that people will respect. Respect is inbuilt. It is not about academic credentials,” Akanbi said.

He said that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s declaration was not a surprise to them, adding “as politicians, they are always vigilant and sensitive”.

FRSC Records Increase In Number Of Persons Rescued From Crashes

Following the just concluded 2022 Easter Special Patrol, which lasted from April 14, 2022, to April 19, 2022, the Federal Road Safety Corps has stated that it rescued 405 people without injuries from a total of 131 crashes nationwide involving 857 people.

This figure released by the Corps represents 47 percent increase in a total number of people rescued without injuries.

The Corps revealed that there was a significant increase in the number of people rescued without injury during the 2022 Easter special patrol due to the wider coverage given to the operations within the period under consideration.

The Corps Public Education Officer of FRSC, Bisi Kazeem, who made this public, stated that 275 people were rescued without injuries in the same period in 2021, while 405 were rescued during the 2022 Easter special patrol without injuries, which marks 47 percent improvement from 2022 record.

However, he noted that the number of persons rescued with injuries from road traffic crashes during the celebration period is 84.

In the same vein, Kazeem mentioned that from the total number of 131 crashes recorded in 2022, 36 were fatal crashes, 72 were serious and 23 were minor.

He added that of the 857 persons involved in road traffic crashes during the 2022 Easter celebration period, a total of 84 people were killed as 213 Vehicles were involved in road traffic crashes across the nation during the period as follows: 15 tanker/trailers, 28 trucks, 40 buses, 85 cars, 35 motorcycles, 5 Tricycles, and 5 pickups.

Quoting the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, Kazeem stated that the Corps now has a wider coverage due to the establishment of more FRSC Commands, Outposts, roadside clinics, and Zebra points that now feed in reports from different routes that were hitherto not thoroughly covered.

Oyeyemi stressed that the increase in the number of road crashes, increase in the number of persons involved, and increase in the number of persons killed are due to the reports that emanated from the new FRSC formations.

It will be recalled that Oyeyemi had earlier directed that the 2022 Easter special patrol should cover 50 corridors, which include: Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Birnin Kebbi; Mokwa-Birnin Yero-Zaria; Maiduguri-Biu-Numan-Jalingo-Wukari; Lafia-Langtang-Pankshin-Jos; Abuja-Lokoja-Okene; Lokoja-Auchi-Benin; Onitsha-Njaba-Owerri-Umuahia, Ibadan-Oyo-Ogbomosho; and Ibadan-Ogere-Shagamu.

In view of the directive of the Corps Marshal, which is a move away from other years where the focus was on critical corridors, Kazeem noted that the Corps intensified its Patrol operations and enlightenment campaigns by giving adequate coverage to all 50 routes across Nigeria.

Analyzing the Corps’ records for the 2022 Easter special patrol with 2021, a total of 6634 offenders were apprehended in 2022, a total of 8097 offences were recorded in 2022, and a total of 3,187 impoundments were made.

The Corps also revealed that with respect to Mobile Court sittings that were spread across Nigeria during this period, a total of 134 persons were arraigned in the 2022 Easter Special Patrol, 88 offenders were convicted with the option of fine, 21 were imprisoned and 20 persons got discharged and acquitted in 2022.

Further to this, Kazeem disclosed that in 2022, enlightenment through motor park rallies and radio programmes increased tremendously.

Kazeem noted that the Corps did not record any assault on its operatives and this could be attributed to enhanced stakeholders collaboration and engagement, an increase in public enlightenment, and the introduction of body and vehicle cameras for operatives.

Serena Williams Pledges £10 Million Bid To Buy Chelsea

Tennis legend Serena Williams has reportedly joined a bid to buy up-for-sale Chelsea FC.

She is said to be committing £10 million to the bid to buy Chelsea alongside F1’s seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

The bid is being headed by former British Airways chairman Sir Martin Broughton and aims to take over the club, stuck in the financial mire after sanctions against current owner Roman Abramovich.

Williams is one of Tennis’ most successful ever players and has an incredible 23 Grand Slam singles titles to her name, putting her only one behind list leader and Australian Margaret Court.

Serena’s success means she has earned a huge amount during her career and she is considered one of the very best, tennis players of all time.

The tennis star, 40, is miles out in front of the earnings list for women’s tennis, thanks to the 73 titles to her name.

The Women’s Tennis Association says that she has earned the equivalent of £76 million from her championship success alone. Second, on the list is sister Venus with a little over £32 million.

Allowing Serena to increase her enormous wealth is thanks in part to her endorsements including Nike, Wilson, and Ford and she is also married to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

Serena Williams has been savvy in her investments earned from her sporting endorsements and career prize money and would likely have the capital to invest in a bid to buy Chelsea.

Her net worth means she would not come close to having the billionaire sums required to buy the club outright but is able to invest in a consortium.

The bid spearheaded by Broughton is one of three finalists being considered by US merchant bank Raine Group, which is overseeing the bid.

Forbes reports she has investments in 66 startups already through her venture capitalist firm Serena Ventures and “sits on the boards of Poshmark and SurveyMonkey’s parent, Momentive”.

Williams already has a track record in sporting ownership and has an estimated 0.5% stake in the Miami Dolphins NFL team.

In January it was announced that Williams would be investing in the Los Angeles-based women’s football club Angel City alongside Eva Longoria and Natalie Portman.

Ukrainian refugees enter the El Chaparral border crossing port into the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) San Ysidro PedWest Port of Entry along the US-Mexico border in Tijuana, Baja California state, Mexico

The Biden administration is expected soon to announce new details on how Ukrainian refugees would be able to seek entry into the United States on humanitarian grounds, a source familiar with the planning says.

The move comes nearly one month after US President Joe Biden pledged to admit up to 100,000 Ukrainians fleeing the invasion.

Over 5,000 Ukrainians attempted to gain entry into the US in March, including 3,274 at the southern border with Mexico, according to US Customs and Border Protection data.

The humanitarian parole program, which would fall under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security and could be announced as soon as Thursday, would require Ukrainians seeking entry to the US to be sponsored by a US citizen or individual, which would include resettlement organizations and non-profits, the source said.

The individuals would need to undergo rigorous security vetting and checks — including biographic and biometric screening and complete vaccinations and other public health requirements, such as receiving the Covid-19 vaccine — in order to be eligible, the source said.

Sponsors would need to pass security background checks of their own as well as declare financial support.

Through this process, Ukrainian applicants would be allowed to travel to the US and be considered for humanitarian parole on a case-by-case basis for up to two years, the source said. If accepted, the individuals would be eligible for work authorization.

The Biden administration could begin taking applications for the program as soon as before the end of April, according to the source.

In addition to the humanitarian parole program, the State Department is working to expand its Refugee Admissions Program operations in Europe, the source added, with the goal of providing eligible individuals with better access to the Lautenberg program — an 1989 initiative aimed at helping those fleeing religious persecution from the Soviet Union — as well as stepping up referral mechanisms for Ukrainians seeking permanent resettlement.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters Wednesday that the administration was working to finalize the details of how it would welcome up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees to the US.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment on the new details but said additional details about the administration’s efforts would be announced “soon.” The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

More than five million people have fled Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began in late February, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said Wednesday.

The Prime Ministers of Spain and Denmark arrived in Kyiv on Thursday to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, their respective offices said.

After arriving in the Ukrainian capital, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen appeared together in a short video tweeted by Sanchez’s official account.

“Ukraine has the support, solidarity and commitment of Spain,” the post said.

Frederiksen’s office tweeted that she and Sanchez would “meet with President Zelensky to deliver concrete support to Ukraine.”

“Tthey will meet to discuss the current situation in Ukraine, further support for the Ukrainians and the prosecution of war crimes and human rights violations in connection with the Russian invasion,” Frederiksen’s office said in a statement.

Russia has denied allegations of war crimes and claims its forces do not target civilians, but CNN journalists on the ground in Ukraine have seen firsthand evidence of atrocities at multiple locations across the country.

Sanchez announced earlier this week that Spain would reopen its embassy in Kyiv in the coming days, which it had closed shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February.

Former Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr is demanding $1m compensation fee for what he claimed is unfair dismissal by the country’s Football Federation.

Rohr was sacked by the NFF on the eve of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations early this year.

The NFF agreed to pay the German’s salary until the end of his contract, which expires in December 2022.

The Former Gabon and Niger coach however wrote a letter to FIFA demanding an additional sum for damages.

That claim was contested by the NFF, and a Fifa tribunal examining Rohr’s claim for damages concluded last week. However, a verdict is yet to be communicated to either party.

“Mr. Rohr’s the only one talking in the media about a case that is already with Fifa,” a top NFF official told BBC Sport Africa.

“That matter is being handled by our legal department and we are waiting [for] a verdict this week or next week before making any official statement.”

A Russian crude oil tanker seized last week by Greek authorities will be released, a government spokesperson confirmed on Thursday.

Greece impounded the tanker with 19 Russian crew members on board on April 15th as part of the EU sanctions.

The spokesperson for the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy said that the anti-money laundering authority has ordered the release of the vessel. The spokesperson added that the release has not begun yet and could not provide further information at this point.

According to the Athens News Agency, the tanker was headed to the Peloponnese peninsula due to an engine problem. There, it planned to offload its cargo on to another vessel.

However adverse weather conditions led it to anchor near the southern coast of the Greek island of Evia, where the tanker was seized.
