Don’t Be Tired Of Voting, Bishop Kaigama Tells Nigerians

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Bishop Ignatius Kaigama has urged Nigerians not to get weary or discouraged from voting on election days.

“Nigerians must remain upbeat; we must keep hope alive. Those developing apathy in view of political developments and insecurity must remain upbeat.

“Millions of unemployed youth and students languishing at home due to ASUU strike must keep hope alive. Nigerians should not get tired of registering to vote again and again. Things will work better someday,” he said in a Homily at the Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja.

He said that the current challenges would be over as God only wanted to teach Nigerians to keep trying and never give up, “even when we experience frustration and tiredness”.

He also spoke on Workers’ Day and emphasized the dignity of labour.

“I pray to the Lord to bless the work of our hands; we urge the government to be more committed to creating job opportunities for the youths who do not have to know influential persons to get jobs,” he said.

He said it was embarrassing that those employed have to always resort to strikes to push home their demands.

“Government should always sit in meaningful dialogue with Labour Unions because repeated strikes such as by ASUU and other labour groups do a lot of damage to our educational system and economy.”

He expressed regrets that some cynical social media commentators had declared that they were tired of praying with no results.

“I insist that since we are not tired of eating, breathing, washing, etc., we should not be tired of praying for our safety, welfare, and progress.

“Prayer is what we have to offer for those right now in the hands of terrorists in the bush, and we pray also that God will inspire the concerned authorities to provide all that is required for our security men to fight those crimes that bring so much pain and agony to families and individuals.

“While acknowledging that God is our security, we must all be security conscious. We invoke the Holy Spirit to help us to continue to be resilient and to bear witness to the risen Lord, who lives and reigns forever and ever,” he said.

He expressed happiness that he had been invited to administer the sacrament of confirmation to 330 candidates and to witness the marriage of nine couples.

“When your chaplain, Fr. Martin Dogo, enthusiastically invited me, I believe he wanted me to come and bless his people, to seek God’s protection, especially for members of your families in the military service, sometimes on dangerous assignments or in very dangerous areas.

“We shall also be seeking God’s mercy on those who had to pay the supreme sacrifice in the service of our nation.

“In these challenging times, it is only appropriate that we ask almighty God to take first place in our lives; we must trust and obey Him and allow Him to lead the way instead of us thinking we should lead Him and dictate to Him.

“The confirmation taking place here makes the 374 members of these chaplaincy soldiers of Christ. You no doubt understand well what a soldier’s duty is, and the discipline, integrity, and professionalism required of a soldier.

“Those to be confirmed are called ‘soldiers’ because they are expected to be rooted in faith, vibrant in the practice of the faith, and meticulously ensure the preservation of the doctrines and traditions of the Catholic Church.

“They must be seen to be observing the commandments of God, promoting social order, fraternal harmony, and the welfare of neighbours.

“Their weapons are not the guns and bombs the conventional soldiers use, but the weapon of prayer, the armor of God described in Ephesians 6:10–17, where St. Paul urged the Ephesians to clothe themselves with the breastplate of justice, take up the shield of faith, take up the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (which is the Word of God).

“By their confirmation, they are, so to speak, moving from the status of non-commissioned officers to commissioned officers. In the faith, they are no longer neophytes or newborn Christians.

“They are now mature enough to promote the good of the Church; protect the interests and welfare of the Church; defend the values of the Church; obey God and the Church as soldiers obey military directives with unquestioning obedience.

“They must attend Mass on Sundays and feasts of obligation; go to confession regularly; receive Communion often; observe faithfully the 10 Commandments, and participate in the sacraments with utmost attention and frequency.”

Kogi Workers Express Disappointment To State Government As They Celebrate Eid-El-Fitri Without Salary

As Muslims all over the world celebrate this year’s Eid-El-Fitri, some workers in Kogi State have expressed their disappointment to the State Government for making them mark the day without their salary.

According to reports, the workers’ hope of receiving their salary before the festive period was dashed, as there was no sign that their salary would be paid.

Speaking to DAILY POST on Monday, some workers described the development as wicked and heartless on the part of the present administration for allowing them to celebrate Sallah on empty stomach.

“After one month of Ramadan fast, look at us now, we are celebrating Sallah without a penny in our pocket. I can’t buy a single cup of garri for my family to feed this festive season.

“We all thought the Governor will do the needful, most especially now that he is eyeing the number one sit in Nigeria. But look at Kogi workers now, nothing to write home about. We are now beggars. What a shameful time for us all to experience this hardship under the present administration,” a civil servant Abduallhi lamented.

Another civil servant, who never wanted his name to be mentioned said, “This is the worst Sallah I will be experiencing in my life. No food, nothing. The cost of foodstuff in the market is very high and if you go out there to buy some foodstuff, you will come back home with little.

“If the Governor had paid us our salary, the suffering would have reduced. I heard the Government will pay after Sallah. To me, it is medicine after death.”

A widow with seven children, who has been working with the Kogi State Civil Service also said, “Why is it that they enjoy inflicting pains on the poor masses? I am a widow with seven children. I don’t know what to do.

“My salary is in percentage. I am no longer complaining because that is where we have found ourselves. They should pay me my percentage salary. I heard our Governor bought the APC nomination form for N100m. That money will go a long way in feeding many Kogi workers during this Sallah. But look at us, we are suffering and smiling with an empty stomach”.

All efforts to get across to any of the relevant State Government officials, on phone, for comment proved abortive as of the time of filing this report.

WithinNigeria recalls that Governor Yahaya Bello, in his Workers’ Day speech on May 1st, 2022, kept mum on when April Salary will be paid to workers in Kogi State.

Rather, the Governor said, “We are doing our best to overcome the percentage salary payments which currently persist at Local Government levels and which is traceable to the challenges associated with the collision between low government inflow and a heavy wage-bill”.

He noted that such an act deserved serious punishment.

“They deserve serious punishment.”

I Will Return As Lagos Governor In 2023 – Ambode

Former Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has said he would unseat incumbent Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu,  in 2023.

The ex-governor made this known through a body pushing for his return to office Akinwunmi Ambode Campaign Organisation (AMCO)

The chairman of AMCO and former Commissioner for Energy and Mineral resources, Wale Oluwo on Sunday said plans had been concluded to return Ambode to the governorship position in the state.

This is coming about a week after the Governor’s Advisory Council reportedly endorsed Sanwo-Olu for the second term in office.

The former governor’s group leader faulted GAC for endorsing Sanwo-Olu, saying the stance of GAC is not a total reflection of APC members

Oluwo said “Ambode is seriously interested in what happens in Lagos”, noting that the former governor had indicated readiness to stand by his ideals.

He claimed that feasibility studies have been conducted and that their outcome showed Lagosians were not getting dividends of democracy under the present administration compared to what was obtainable during the previous administration in the state.

“Performance for performance, the administration of Sanwo-Olu cannot be compared to what Ambode achieved. You have to start with security and infrastructure, we can show a lot of things now. But for this government, well this is not the time to start tearing ourselves apart,” he said.

“The way that the GAC sponsored its candidate is the same way that we will do that for our own candidate too. And members of the party will have the option of determining which of the candidates, either AMCO or GAC, they will like to vote for. We acknowledge that Sanwo-Olu has picked his nomination form, the AMCO candidate will also do his own. And the primary will happen.

“For AMCO, we are participating at all levels of the election. From Governorship to the House of Assembly. We will field candidates for all positions. Our candidate will not be Akinwunmi Ambode. That is not where we are going. We will present our own aspirant and he would challenge the governor for the seat in Lagos.

“The process of presenting our own candidate is almost concluded and I can assure you that by early next week, that candidate will be announced. The GAC is only promoting their own interest by announcing Sanwo-Olu’s as their candidate.”

Count Me Out Of Man United Director Of Football Role - Rio Ferdinand

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand admits he is no longer looking to take on a director role at the club.

Ferdinand was linked to the director of football position at United, while he has previously spoken about being open to taking on a role at the club where he won numerous trophies.

The ex-center-back spoke with Manchester Evening News to promote WeAre8, a social media platform.

“Not really, no,” Ferdinand said if he wanted a director role at United.

“I am happy with what I am doing in regards to punditry, being involved in a management company and the WeAre8 stuff as well. I am happy. I am busy doing stuff. If the club ever needed me, I’d always be open to that conversation because of my love for the club, but I think the same could be said of any former player who played for the club.”

He added on a recent chat with United football director John Murtaugh before their loss to Arsenal last month: “I worked with these guys when I was at the club, and I still have a relationship with them. I am quite open and honest in the way I speak about United and how things are going.

“Those conversations will always remain private, but they are always very open and honest.”

The General Overseer of Champions Royal Assembly, Prophet Joshua Iginla has described Nigeria as a union in which one region, Igbo is suffering and not allowed to produce the president.

According to the clergy, South East has been deprived, which has caused unity and Inequality in the country, noting that it is turn of the region to produce the next president in 2023.

In his sermon monitored by ABN TV, he insisted that Nigeria cannot be preaching unity and love and be practicing hate against the Igbo, adding that it has fueled separatist agitation which the country faces at the moment.

He queried why North and Yoruba will continue to be in power while the Igbo is told they are not trusted.

He said, “Let them (Presidential aspirants) come, whether they are in unity or not in unity. Give them the opportunity to prove themselves.”

He wondered why the Igbo are being kept in the union if they are not trusted.

The cleric called on the church to begin to get involved in politics instead of watching from the sideline.

He said politics is not only spiritual but physical, stating that Christians will make the difference in the country’s governance.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the spirit of charitable giving that accompanies the Ramadan, has distributed sacks of rice and sugar to over 50,000 families across Nigeria.

A statement from his media office said the sharing of the items which began last week put smiles on the faces of beneficiaries with many expressing thanks through prayers for Asiwaju.

Speaking about Ramadan earlier in April, the former Lagos governor emphasised the need to “contribute to the wellbeing of those around us, give succor to people we find in need, and study more how to solve problems instead of creating them.”

He added, “Let us keep in the forefront of our minds that Ramadan also asks of us to show greater compassion, empathy and understanding, and enlightenment in how we treat and relate to one another.

“Ramadan asks of all of us to embrace acts of kindness, love our neighbors and reach out to the poor, needy and unfortunate among us. Our nation is one gifted by Allah with bountiful resources and a good and decent people.”

2023: Senate President Ahmad Lawan Set To Join Presidential Race
Ahmad Lawan

Ahead of 2023 Presidential election, President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan may have bowed to pressure from Senators, the North East geo- political zone in particular and other parts of the north to vie for the Presidency as he will, this week, pick the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to contest for the Presidency.

The President of the Senate had earlier slated Tuesday for the collection of the forms and declare, but shifted it to another day, and did same this week because of the public holiday that was declared by the Federal Government, a Vanguard report says.

Lawan decided to join the Presidential race following pressure from his zone, the North East geo- political zone in particular as well as Senators and very strong persons from the North.

According to the source, Lawan who hails from Yobe State was dragged in because he is a younger person from the North that the APC should produce in case the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP gives the ticket to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who is also from the North East.

The source also said that there have been series of meeting at Asokoro, Maitama, Wuse2 and even during the Umrah when some powerful Senators and politicians went for Lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia to brainstorm on the issue of Lawan.

It was also gathered that Lawan was drafted into the race since the North East has never produced a President except the North West.

According to the calculation by those behind Lawan, the North West had Produced late President Shehu Shagari from Sokoto State where a Presidential aspirant, governor Aminu Tambuwal hails from; the zone had produced late President Umaru Yar’Adua and the incumbent, President Muhammadu Buhari both from Katsina State, while Namadi Sambo from Kaduna State was a Vice President and the highest position ever held by the North East is Vice President and that was Atiku Abubakar from Adamawa, adding that except in the first Republic when Abubakar Tafawa Balewa from Bauchi State was the Prime Minister.

The permutation by the Elders and politicians from the North is that as a serving President of the Senate, he is more on ground politically and can get his supporters especially from the present Senate from the North Central, North West, South East, South South and South West.

The source also said that Lawan has been drafted into the race to pave way for a Northerner to retain the Presidency is against the backdrop that if the PDP zones the position to the South, the President of the Senate will be the one for the North and also for the reason that the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP where the former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso may not be very popular in the North even though the candidate of the party as a former Governor of Kano State is strong and popular.

The Northerners as gathered are rooting for Lawan in case the PDP did not go for Atiku Abubakar, but settle for either Tambuwal or Bala Mohammed from Bauchi State, just as the pressure group as gathered would meet with President Buhari to intimate him on the need for Lawan in order for the party to retain power and for Lawan to pick his vice Presidential candidate from the South East.

A Senator from the North who spoke with Vanguard said, ”We have succeeded in dragging the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan into the Presidential race to contest for the position and win. He is a young Northerner, a young Nigerian who is presently serving as the Senate President, he has been in the National Assembly since 1999 from the House of Representatives to the Senate. He has the experience, he has worked in very good and robust relationship with the Executive and the Judiciary, he understands governance.

“He will declare very soon, he would have bought his expression and interest forms on Tuesday, but shifted to a later day in the week. The forms would be purchased for him because people want him.”

Recall that majority of the Presidential aspirants in the PDP are from the North while that of APC are from the South, except Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello who is from the North Central. Some of the southern aspirants include Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo; leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi; Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi; former governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunke Amosun; former governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha; Minister of Transportation, Hon Chibuike Amaechi; Minister of Labour & Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, and Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, among others.
