Russia “indefinitely” banned 63 Japanese citizens including Prime Minister Fumio Kishida from entry, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported Wednesday.

Members of Kishida’s cabinet, including Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi, and Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki have also been barred from entering the country, as well as members of the parliament, and the military, RIA reported.

“The administration of Fumio Kishida launched an unprecedented anti-Russian campaign, allows unacceptable rhetoric against the Russian Federation, including slander and direct threats,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement, according to RIA.

“It is echoed by public figures, experts and media representatives of Japan, who are completely engaged in the attitudes of the West towards our country.”

Since March, Japan has introduced a series of sanctions against Russia including freezing the assets of President Vladimir Putin and his family members in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Some background: Last week, Russia warned Japan of “retaliatory measures” if it expands joint naval exercises with the United States near Russia’s eastern borders.

The threat was the latest salvo from Moscow, which has been angered by Japan’s support for Ukraine and its growing ties with NATO countries.

Students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have taken to the streets to protest the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which entered its 80th day.

The Nation learned students of the institution blocked the ever-busy Benin-Lagos Expressway, school gate, and Ring Road.

The protest caused gridlock on the highway for hours, forcing many motorists to avoid the route while those going into the state capital had to divert to other roads.

The students also defied the heavy downpour.

The Nation recalls in February, the students had blocked the busy Benin/Lagos highway in solidarity with the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Mr. Tein Jack-Rich has joined the presidential race.

A group, ‘The Jack-Rich Patriot,’ said it has embarked on the mobilization of delegates ahead of the primary.

The campaign group called on delegates to put sentiments apart and elect Jack-Rich to provide a new leadership that would turn around the country.

Rising from a meeting in Lagos yesterday, the group noted the challenges facing the country and said there is a need for new leadership that is “visionary, purposeful, altruistic and really effective.”

In a statement by its Secretary-General, Dr. Ibrahim Abdullahi, the group urged the delegates to consider the character, integrity, and track record of Jack-Rich, stressing that he was endowed with essential qualities of leadership.

According to the group, the aspirant and Chairman of Belemaoil Producing Limited, Jack-Rich is well prepared for the job of the president because of his accomplishments in the private sector and high-level training and management.

Abdullahi said: “If we are serious as a nation in search of genuine renewal in all ramifications, the most qualified among the lot in the presidential race is Jack-Rich. This is beyond tokenism but factored as imperative for good and qualitative leadership that can also guarantee purposeful, altruistic, and effective governance for the critical job of birthing a new nation that truly works for the common good.

“Jack-Rich is a world-class technocrat that is coming to the job with a remarkable record of accomplishments, having excelled well in the private sector and now ready to turn his knowledge and experience in the service of the nation.

Military Declares Full Scale Battle Against IPOB Over Alleged Killing Of Army Couple In Imo

Nigerian Army yesterday said it would go after members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for the gruesome murder of army couple in Imo State.

Two soldiers, Audu Linus, a Master Warrant Officer, and Private Gloria Matthew, were shot dead and beheaded on Saturday when they were on transit to Imo State for their traditional wedding.

Army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement issued in Abuja, described the killing as “gruesome, barbaric and most despicable”.

“Apparently, the soldiers had embarked on the trip to fulfill the traditional rites of conjugating their matrimony, as the very well respected and cherished Igbo tradition demands.

“Ironically, the fact that one of the soldiers, Pte Gloria Matthew who hails from Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State, has an ethnic affiliation with the good people of South East Nigeria did not prevail on the sensibility of the dissidents.

“This dastardly act, one too many, clearly portends the deep-seated hate, desperation and lawlessness with which foot soldiers of IPOB/ESN have been unleashing terror on Ndigbo, whom they claim they are on a mission to protect and emancipate, as well as other innocent Nigerians who are resident or transiting the South East.

“This gruesome murder, in which they did not spare even their own child, clearly depicts callousness, impenitence and is indisputably a brazen act of terrorism perpetrated by IPOB/ESN,” the statement read.

Nwachukwu said the dissident groups had continued to live in denial, while masquerading as unknown gunmen in their criminal violent campaign in the region.

He urged members of the public to oblige security agencies with actionable information that would lead to the arrest of the criminals.

“While we deeply condole with the families, relations and close associates of the victims, the NA has commenced investigation to unmask and bring the criminals to book,” the statement added.

The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), has called on President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal government to restore the dignity of Nigeria’s tertiary Institutions through increased budgetary allocations, and the creation of enabling environment for staff to excel.

The Union also states that its position regarding the government’s recent counteraction of no payment of salary to striking varsity workers in the country, is “No Pay, No Work”.

“We stand on “No pay, No work”. This divide and rule policy of Government shall not work. Be rest assured that we shall come out better, stronger with every dime paid before or on resumption of work. United we stand for our Union makes us strong.”

Furthermore, the Union said that workers must use their voter cards and the powers it wills have to determine their future in Nigeria starting from the 2023 general elections.

NAAT National President, Comrade (Hon.) Ibeji Nwokoma, who said this in his May Day commemoration message, further lamented that ‘the failure of Government to address the issue of unemployment, security challenges, decay in infrastructure and the educational deficit is appalling. There call on workers across the country and NAAT members, in particular, to gear up for active participation in the electioneering process that will favour their well-being and the progress of Nigeria.

“We demand that Government restores the dignity of our Tertiary Institutions through increased budgetary allocations and the creation of enabling environment for staff to excel. Our children are all still at home, due to the closure of the Universities. Government should as a matter of urgency dialogue with the Unions and find amicable solutions to the issues in dispute, bearing in mind that no nation rises above her level of education, and keeping those youths at home and idle during this period of electioneering is a disaster in waiting.

“In the face of the failure of Government to address the issue of unemployment, security challenges, decay in infrastructure and educational deficit. This year’s Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) theme: Labour, Politics, and Quest for Good Governance and Development in Nigeria is apt. I call on all workers in Nigeria and our dear NAAT members to rise up to the occasion by ensuring that we participate actively in all political processes and take our destiny in our hands.”

He also said; “Our universities have been shut down for almost three (3) months now due to the strike action by the Unions. Unfortunately, our government seems, more interested in politicking and preparations for the next round of elections. We cannot lose sight of the fact that our Union embarked on strike because of insensitivity, insincerity, and refusal of the government to implement our collectively bargained agreements.

“Today, in spite of the agreements, the balance of arrears of Occupational Hazard Allowance, payment of arrears of the minimum wage and the consequential adjustments, huge backlog of arrears of Earned Allowances (EA) as far back as 2012 for most Universities, non-release of the extant circular for CONTISS 14 & 15 amongst others are all outstanding.

“Today, our Laboratories, Workshops, and Studios are being turned into classrooms, and most of the equipment is obsolete with little or no attention paid to training and re-training of Academic Technologists, whose responsibilities are to impart practical knowledge and skill to the students. No wonder today, houses are collapsing, roads are failing, as the Universities turn out graduates without skills and exposure to practical knowledge.”

On the plight of workers, he said; “I salute your doggedness, resilience, and courage in your effort for a better life for yourselves, families, and dependents in our Nation Nigeria richly endowed with human and natural resources but poorly managed over the decades by those who preside over our commonwealth.

“The average Nigerian worker today must be a magician and a miracle worker with her slave wage and N30, 000.00 minimum wage all in the midst of security challenges of banditry, kidnappings known and unknown gunmen, very weak currency and rising inflationary rates.

“Today our Union and ASUU have been singled out for the implementation of the policy of “No work, No pay”. Comrades, your President, and indeed the National Leadership stand with you in this trying moment. Our strike action is legitimate and followed every due process.

Man Who Attempted To Bribe Navy With 700k After Seizure Of Bunkery Boat Arrested

A man has been arrested in Rivers State for allegedly attempting to bride the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder with N700,000 to release his seized boat containing 80 drums of illegally refined diesel.

The wooden boat and products were intercepted during a recent operation by the agency.

The man who gave his name as Kenneth Sunday was said to have walked into the NNS Pathfinder barracks in Rumuolumeni area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area with the money wrapped in a white plastic bag and demanded to see his boat.

He was then asked by a naval officer to identify and inspect the consignment among many others that were displayed at the naval jetty.

On his return from the jetty, the commander who waiting at the jetty, ordered his arrest and immediately paraded him and the money before journalists who had just returned with the naval crew from an operation against illegal oil refining.

The suspect, however, denied that he was at the Navy barracks to bribe the commander and claimed that the boat he inspected was not his, but that of a friend.

Meanwhile, the navy has discovered a community of illegal crude oil refiners in the state, and arrested several suspects.

The Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has pardoned 90 inmates across correctional centres in the state.

The governor granted the prisoners pardon when he paid a Sallah visit to the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre, Kano, on Monday, alongside some members of the State Executive Council (SEC), party leaders and other top government dignitaries.

The governor, according to a statement issued by his spokesman, Abba Anwar, asked the pardoned inmates to report to the government and register for skills acquisition programmes, while assuring that, “More inmates would be pardoned in the next 70 days during Eid el-Kabir celebration.”

The statement reads in part: “Some of you have been pardoned because of ill health, some because of age, some because of their inability to pay for fines placed on them; some were even on death row.

“Though many of you were given training in one skill or the other, those of you who need further training should immediately go and register with the government for another round of skills acquisition.”

The governor reminded them that the pardon was not only meant to decongest the correctional centres, but to also give them another chance to be of good character.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has told his former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Charles Ogbonnaya that he was not competent to preach to him on salary payment, “having been chased out of office by angry unpaid council workers while he was in office as the Chairman of Umuahia North Local Government”.

Ogbonnaya who had also served as Commissioner for Trade and Investment under Ikpeazu, had challenged the Governor to explain to Abians why Council workers and pensioners are being owed salary arrears.

He said that Council workers were never owed while he held sway, and wondered why the state is now owing despite receiving bigger allocations.

The former Deputy Chief of Staff, office of the Deputy Governor who said he was instrumental to the emergence of Ikpeazu in 2015, also accused the Governor of underperformance, saying that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has nothing to showcase at the campaigns for the 2023 elections.

He regretted that even Ebonyi State with little allocations had long overtaken Abia in infrastructural development.

But the Governor in a swift reaction dismissed Ogbonnaya as an attention seeker and morally unfit to preach to him on workers’ welfare.

Ikpeazu who spoke with our Correspondent yesterday in Umuahia, said he had, contrary to allegations by the Commissioner, posted remarkable achievements.

The Governor who spoke through his Commissioner for Information, Eze Chikamnayo, said he had built over 100 roads, hospitals and put smiles on the faces of Abians who voted him into power.

His words: ” Charles Ogbonnaya is looking for unmerited attention. He is not competent to sermonise on salary payment having been chased out of office by angry workers for owing backlog of salary arrears.

“Ikpeazu has performed for Abia people who elected him. May be he has not performed in the pocket of Charles Ogbonnaya.”

“Ikpeazu built Aba Road Umuahia which Charles Ogbonnaya and his cohorts could not build. He has also built over 100 roads.

“He built Children’s Specialist Hospital, the best in South East very close to the house of Charles Ogbonnaya for his children and grandchildren.

” He is crying wolf where there is non because we have not performed in his pocket. But we will continue to perform for the people of Abia State”, Ikpeazu said.

Chief Ogbonnaya had admitted he had friendly relationship with the Governor but said that he was no longer willing to receive gifts from the Governor if he would not take good advice to work for the people.

He said he had severally advised the Governor privately but decided to go public to see if he could improve to save the ruling party from defeat at the polls.

A new political movement, Action Peoples Party, APP has been floated in Abia and the leadership says it is committed to bringing change in the governance of the state, ABN TV reports.

APP says it is worried that things are not working the way they ought to, insisting that things are in deplorable state, stating that APP which is the coming together of likeminds from various political parties is a platform to bring change in the state.

Addressing newsmen in Umuahia on Tuesday shortly after the inauguration of State and local government working committee, Chairman of the party, Hon. Chief Sylvanus Nwanji while underlining that the party has been in existence said its target is to bring a turnaround in the infrastructure of the state, roads, educational sector, and others.

On the timing of this political movement, especially coming few months to election, Hon. Nwanji, a former chairman of Ukwa West local government area said, “It’s not late, the essential point we want to prove is that people in Abia want change. This is masses oriented party. We want people to come, people of likeminds.

“People are yearning for change. We are on a membership drive. There are people already but we want more members. We want more people.

“Our desire is that everybody will come out on the day of election so that we will be able to do it through our voter card so that Abia will be properly blessed.

“We want infrastructure placed well, workers are dying because of lack of payment of salaries. You saw what happened in Kogi, that they came to celebrate Workers Day without salaries.

“It’s happening in Abia. They just give them token as if the workers are beggars,” he lamented.

While noting that cost of living is high, the former Adviser to the Governor insisted that Abia workers and pensioners have been subjected to harsh living conditions.

He called on the people of the state to join hands with the APP to bring what he called proper change in Abia governance starting from 2023.

On where the next governor of Abia State should come from, Hon. Nwanji mince no words in rooting for Abia North, adding that other Senatorial Districts of the state have had their turn at governorship of the state.

The Nigerian Army has accused the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of unleashing terror on Ndigbo, whom they claim to be protecting.

The army authorities said this while confirming the murder of a couple on Saturday.

Daily Trust had reported how the couple – Audu Linus, a Master Warrant Officer, and Gloria Matthew, a Private – were murdered and beheaded on Saturday.

Confirming the tragic incident in a statement issued in Abuja, Army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, vowed that their killers would be tracked down.
