2023: Vote For Credible Candidates, Not Political Party – Group warns

A non-governmental organization, Advocacy For Good Citizenship and Peace, AGCP, has called on the Nigerian electorate to vote for candidates based on their personal attributes and not for political party considerations.

It also picked holes in the process through which Nigerian leaders emerge, alleging that it has caused a lack of progress and development in the country.

Barrister Kelechi Mbam, the National Coordinator of the non-governmental organization, said this at public enlightenment in Abakaliki.

It further explained that it was high time the electorate voted for credible leaders of their choice based on their person and not based on political party for the progress of the country.

Also in a press briefing, Mbam disclosed that strategies and measures had been mapped out to sensitize Nigerians on the need to know what was expected of them, ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He pointed out that voting behaviour would be mainly based on candidates who have an impeccable character to uplift the living standard of the people.

In his words, “We are all aware that our dear country, Nigeria, will go into the polls come 2023 to elect another set of political leaders ranging from State to National Assembly members, as well as governors of States.”

But Mbam noted that as political parties have commenced the sale of nomination forms to elect their candidates, the electorate should be wary of dirty political activities capable of enthroning another circle of bad leaders into various offices.

He added, “The issue of placing political parties above individual pedigree is becoming overwhelming in our voting pattern.

“Na person, No Be party,” he warned.

Insecurity: Kogi Gov Shuts Down Brothels, Bans Wearing Of Facemasks In Public Places

Director-general of the Hope ’23 Yahaya Bello Campaign Council, Hafsat Abiola-Costello has said no candidate is better positioned for the 2023 Presidency than Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello.

She added that 30 years after June 12, Bello was in the Presidential race to restore the hope of Nigerians, especially that of youths, women and the vulnerable.

Hafsat Abiola, daughter of acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential elections, late Chief MKO Abiola, made this known on Tuesday during an interview on TVC’s programme, Your View, where she rolled out reasons her candidate, Yahaya Bello, remained Nigeria’s best bet in the forth-coming 2023 elections.

“The truth is, the people that are truly marginalized in Nigeria are the women and the young people. and if there is any moral obligation, it is to them that it is owed.

“Who led the fight against June 12, against the annulment? Was it not the students, the young people? Where were they in 1999 after the whole fight, where were they placed, can we say nowhere?

“When I look at all these events, the kidnappings and all now, it is clear to me that this is a revolt of young people of Nigeria, that they have had enough.

“Many of them are revolting in ways that we do not endorse because they have had enough of being marginalized in their own country. If the country will not use them for good, they will use themselves for bad.

“And there is no candidate better positioned to harness and to signal to young people in Nigeria than my candidate.

“That Nigeria is for them, that they are the ones that should be in charge. And young people and women in Nigeria are ready to lead.

No more excuses,” Hafsat Abiola-Costello said.

The DG, further explaining why Bello is the best choice for Nigeria’s Presidency, said that he had demonstrated transparency, credibility and accountability as governor of Kogi, an action which had been recognized over and over again by the World Bank.

IPOB Replies Army, Says It’s Not Responsible For Killing Of Army Couple

0

The Indigenous People of Biafra has denied being responsible for the killing of a military couple on transit to Imo State.

In a statement on Wednesday, the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, described the accusation by the Nigerian Army of IPOB’s masterminding the act as “laughable” and “fallacious”.

Powerful said the latest allegation is part of the Nigerian Army’s propaganda aimed at staining the IPOB’s global reputation.

He said, “Our attention is drawn to the laughable and fallacious statement credited to the Nigeria Army that IPOB is responsible for the killing of a couple on transit in Imo State after their marriage ceremony.

“We, therefore, wish to place on record that IPOB has no hands in the said atrocity which is an abominable act in Igbo tradition. No true Igbo will hurt an in-law, how much more a married daughter (Ada) in Igbo land. Even the ancestors will avenge such wickedness.

“We cannot kill our sister who is about to marry but those who killed them were those Nigerian government and its security agencies, especially the military and DSS created to demonise IPOB and ESN. These agents of death some of whom we have made their identities public severally are behind the killings of these soldiers, not IPOB or ESN operatives.”

He accused the Nigerian security agencies, particularly the Nigerian military of being behind the ongoing secret genocide in Biafra land.

He claimed that the Army has always looked for an occasion to attack the innocent Igbo youths in order to rope them in the aftermath of the act and tag them as suspects.

The statement added, “Before the Army jumped into their jaundiced conclusion that such abominable act was masterminded by IPOB, what investigations did they carry out to substantiate their claims? When have armed gunmen or criminals recruited by evil politicians in connivance with the same security agencies in their desperation to demonise IPOB, become IPOB members?

“The Nigeria Army should leave IPOB alone because we are not unknown gunmen and those who are pursuing them. The monster they created is now after them, yet they keep pointing accusing fingers at us.

“The latest allegation is part of their propaganda to stain our global reputation but the world knows they are lying. How come the Fulani bandits and terrorists beheading and massacring Indigenous Nigerians, particularly in Southern Kaduna and Plateau State go unpunished while the Army is down South flexing muscles with innocent and unarmed IPOB members and citizens of the South-East?

“But any time these hoodlums they jointly created with evil and greedy politicians in Biafra land commit atrocity they will quickly rush to the press and accuse IPOB without investigations.

“We understand their game plan. All they are after is to blackmail IPOB before our international friends who understand our predicaments in the region. But ironically when worse crimes are committed in the North by Fulani bandits and other Fulani terrorists in the North, the same hypocritical security agencies will keep mute and it is clear to all that most crimes and atrocities committed in the region was masterminds by retired soldier and police or serving security agents within the region of South East.

“Our only crime is that we want to be self-determined. How come it is only in Nigeria that IPOB members are cannibals? When will they stop lying against us? Nigeria security agencies should please leave us alone. We hate bloodletting. We are not Killers. We have on our own been battling these same criminals those we can lay our hands on that are unleashing sorrow even on our innocent people. God will judge all those trying to paint us black for black and evil we know nothing about.

“IPOB/ESN made it categorically clear to all and sundry severally that we are not unknown gunmen and can never be, but because of hatred and envy Nigeria Government and its security agencies have continued to link us with atrocities going-on in our land.

“We are letting the world know that Nigeria Army and police are confused institutions. They are beclouded to see the truth because of their bias against us and delivering good jobs correctly.”

Hold The Elite Responsible For Nigeria’s Problems — Amaechi

Chibuike Amaechi

Minister of Transportation and All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Hopeful, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has blamed the elite for the country’s woes.

He said this at the 2022 World Press Freedom Day organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom capital.

“The problem of the country is not the poor man in Akwa Ibom or Rivers; it is not the poor man in the south-east or in the north. It is you and I, the elite,” he said.

He tasked Nigerians to hold politicians accountable for their actions in governance.

Amaechi, who was the special guest of honour at the event, said, “Until we begin to hold every politician, every elite accountable, this country won’t move forward,” he said.

According to him, the elites are shouting restructuring because there is nothing more to share.

“Why you hear restructuring and restructuring every time is because the elites’ consensus on sharing (the resources) is disappearing; it’s because there is nothing to share again because we are broke. The problem facing this country is caused by the elite, including you.”

He also urged media practitioners to support efforts to find resolutions to the nation’s problems through objective, balanced and fair reportage, adding that “freedom comes with responsibility”.

A lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, Jones Ayuwo, who delivered a lecture said the sustenance of the country’s democracy is dependent on having a free press.

Ayuwo, who spoke on the topic: ‘Journalism Under Digital Siege’, however lamented that the media and government have been relating like cat-and-mouse.

“We must stand against any attempt by government to regulate the internet because if it is regulated, we also are regulated,” he said.
