When Orji Kalu Shook Abia With Constituency Projects

Many, especially those who bungled the opportunity to positively impact the lives of the people, had thought that the reported infrastructural revolution currently running through Abia North senatorial district was a fluke.

Last month, the Senate Chief Whip and Senator representing Abia North, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, proved doubting Thomases wrong with concrete evidence of his commitment to touching the lives of the people directly through the provision of basic infrastructure.

He brought the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan, to inaugurate some of the completed roads in Abia North. There was hardly enough time to get to all the projects spread across the five local government areas of the senatorial district.

The Senate President only had time to inaugurate the 2kilometre Nvurunvu Uturu road in Isuikwuato Local Government Area and the 4-kilometre Uzor Rubber.

“Some of the projects commissioned include the Agbaja Nkporo road (7.5Km) in Ohafia LGA, Obi Chima road (2 Km), in Isuikwuato LGA, Umu Imenyi road (2Km) in Bende LGA and Amankalu Alayi road (2 Km) in Bende LGA. In spite of the elaborate arrangements for a formal reception, the Senate President, with his entourage did not sit down in any of the project venues.

Yet, he could not go round them. At the Uturu road, the first port of call, after arriving the state through Enugu airport, Lawan told the people, while cutting the tape to commission the 2km Nvurunvu-Uturu road that the project was APC’s way of rewarding their support and loyalty and urged them to ensure they support the party to win the state and retain Abia North in 2023.

He described Kalu as an asset to the party and a lover of his people. Other projects attracted by Senator Kalu included three Boreholes in Agbaja, Amuri, and Enugwu Nkporo in Ohafia LGA.

Apparently, excited by the unprecedented record posted by the former Governor of Abia State, a Socio-political group, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, admitted that Senator Kalu has indeed changed the narrative of representation.

“The successful execution and completion of these laudable projects within three years of representation by Senator Kalu is a clear testament that he is not in the Senate to make noise but for a serious business which is to better the lives and well-being of his people. “Senator Orji Kalu has indeed changed the narrative and shown to the people that there is more to lawmaking. Abians are indeed proud of him. We urge him to keep up the good work.

“We call on other Senators and lawmakers who have been deceiving their people, telling them that the is no projects given to their constituency to desist from such pranks and turn a new leave by emulating the dynamic Senator representing Abia North senatorial district and learn from him.”

Before now, Kalu had completed classrooms for schools in the senatorial district with furniture, teaching aids and books. In fact, he had promised to go beyond Abia North to build roads in Ariaria International Market, Aba in Abia South Senatorial district.

But within this period, he visited and appealed to Nkporo traditional rulers and people for the inability of the Senate President to commission the road completed in the area scheduled for inauguration alongside others. Indeed, to deliver 53 roads of different lengths across the five local government areas of Abia North in just three years is by any standard no mean feat by a Senator.

Even some governors with all the resources at their disposal, cannot boast of touching lives with such number of roads within the same space of time.

This is in exclusion of numerous classroom blocks, furniture, and books either built or renovated. It does not include the water projects that have given the people of Nkporo in particular and others hope of drinking safe water.

Senator Kalu was also in Arochukwu where he inaugurated a classroom block he renovated in Arochukwu community primary school, and two internal roads were abandoned for 30 years. He had last year, inaugurated the Atani Ihechiowa road in Arochukwu local government area.

Just as the staff and pupils of the Community Primary School were overjoyed with the renovation of their classroom block, residents of Arochukwu, headquarters of Arochukwu LGA could not hide their excitement as Senator Kalu commissioned two major link roads which he facilitated in the community.

According to them, the newly completed Asphalt 2kilometre and 3kilometre interlink roads have been neglected for 30 years, with the road having a negative impact on the social and economic activities of the communities.

The newly commissioned Asphalt roads form part of the 53 road projects executed by Kalu, the Senate Chief Whip to the rural communities in Abia-North Senatorial District, some of which were recently inaugurated by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan. Kalu has undoubtedly dwarfed whatever previous record, if any, of senatorial representation.

Some have confessed, without prejudice, that they did not know that senators could do what Orji was doing because they have had senators before him who did not give them such sense of belonging.

Governor Nyesom Wike has again slammed former Governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, accusing him of betraying the people of Rivers State.

The Governor, who claimed that Rivers people spent their money and sleepless nights to make sure Ihedioha became Imo State governor, warned those conspiring against the State in any form to be ready to experience devastating downfall in life.

Wike, who spoke at a special thanksgiving service in Rivers State, yesterday, said that just four to five months in office as governor, Ihedioha destroyed the previous agreement being enjoyed by the two States on sharing of the proceeds of the oil well.

Rivers State secured a legal victory at the Supreme Court in the oil well dispute between them and Imo State last week.

The oil wells are located in Akiri and Mbede communities.

He regretted the actions of Ihedioha and the current Governor, Hope Uzodimma who rescinded the political arrangement of 50:50 sharing formula of the proceeds from the disputed oil well.

Wike said: “This young man (Ihedioha), just within four/five months he became a governor, went to see Mr. President. He wrote to Mr. President that Rivers State is owing Imo State N15billion and, therefore, they should take the money from Rivers State, that the oil wells we are sharing on the 50:50 formula amicably, belong to them.

“This is someone Rivers people, not Rivers State government, supported, and spent money on. I’ve never seen a betrayer like this in my life.

“Rivers people who helped him, had sleepless nights to make him the governor of Imo State. We did everything we could do, thinking that we were supporting a friend. All we got was a stab at the back.”

Hold PDP, Senator, Police Responsible For Shootings In Ebonyi Not IPOB — Gov. Umahi — Governor Dave Umahi

Dave Umahi, the Governor of Ebonyi State, has accused the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, an unidentified Senator, and officers of the Nigeria Police of carrying out shootings in the State.

Addressing a congregation, during church service at a chapel in the Government House Abakiliki, the Governor, who thanked God for the successful visitation of President Muhammadu Buhari last week, said the shooting reported while the President was on ground, was not carried out by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

According to him, members of the opposition party and thugs of a sitting Senator were responsible for the shooting.

ABN TV recalls that there was pandemonium at the Ebonyi State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Secretariat on Tuesday following heavy shootings by unidentified gunmen operating along the busy Enugu-Abakaliki express road.

The Governor stated that there has been shootings around the secretariat for the past two weeks, vowing that he would seal off the facility if there is another shooting.

He said, “There were even questions as to why there was no announcement of IPOB about the President’s coming, the answer is I don’t know, refer the matter to God, everything worked out perfectly well and that could only come through fasting and prayers.”

“There was a report of shooting; the shooting was done by the PDP people, shooting at the Secretariat and for the past two weeks, they have been shooting in that area, is that how they want to contest and win elections in Ebonyi State?” He queried.

He alleged that unknown gunmen, who recently attacked a police station in Ezza South and North were caught with weapons belonging to the police and a vehicle carrying a Senator’s name and PDP logo.

“When the Police Stations were attacked in Ezza South and North, the police guns were missing, when the shooting was happening and one of the thugs were arrested, with a bus of a Senator painted in PDP colour, with his name boldly written on it, do you know what was discovered, among other guns and ammunition was the police gun.

“How can you come to a State and you will be shooting as if there is no Government, and you are carrying police people and then your thugs are shooting, it won’t happen again”, he added.

After Procuring N100m Nomination Form For Akinwumi Adesina, Coalition Having Tough Times To Reach Him

The coalition of 28 groups, which procured an All Progressives Congress, APC Presidential nomination and expression of interest forms for the President, African Development Bank AfDB, Akinwumi Adesina, has said it did not have the consent of the continental public servant to purchase the forms.

According to the coalition, 24 hours after paying for the forms, it has not been able to reach the banker. It, however, said Adesina remains the best man for the job and that the groups needed to procure the forms to meet with relevant deadlines before trying to convince Mr Adesina.

Speaking, yesterday, after picking the forms at the International Conference Centre, ICC, in Abuja, the coalition said it has not been able to reach Mr Adesina.

The coalition had earlier on Saturday paid for the forms. It said between the period it paid for the forms and when it picked them on Sunday, it was yet to get across to Mr Adesina.

Leader of the Youth Arise Movement, one of the groups in the coalition, Babatunde Ademola, said: “I am one of the group leaders of this team of 28 groups that have been working tirelessly and consulting across the country and even outside the country to ensure that we get him to come and obey the clarion call.

“I will tell you significantly that we have tried to reach out to him, we have sent messages; we have looked at any way we will get across to him. We have not gotten any definite response from him.

However, because we know the Constitution of Nigeria is very clear, and the Act that governs the umpire for electioneering is also clear, and we know that the timing is not on our side and we believe that for such person after we have looked at the situation of this country, we need Dr Adesina to come and solve Nigeria’s problem and because of this, we have put our resources together.”

On when the coalition would present the forms to Mr Adesina, he said; “By the grace of God we will ensure that. We know that he is not available, right now. We have been trying to reach him, but when we get him we will inform you.”

President of the One Nigeria Group, Mohammed Saleh who led the delegation said Adesina is a man of proven integrity and experience.

“He has done so much for Nigeria as Minister for Agriculture. He has solved the problems of so many farmers, created so many jobs by solving the corruption in the agricultural sector. Particularly the fertilizer, which he brought the e-wallet for fertilizer which the farmers are enjoying now, and it has created a lot of jobs. It has also helped millions of farmers in Nigeria which they are still benefiting and also as President, African Development Bank he has brought a lot of initiatives that solve Africa’s food security problem. So, we will like him to come back home and apply it here in Nigeria.”

A front runner gubernatorial aspirant in Abia State ahead of the 2023 general elections on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, better known as Don Lulu along with the Deputy Chief Whip of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Kelechi Onuzurike and other party stalwarts, associates and supporters at the weekend stormed Bende local government area of the state in furtherance of his consultations.

He met with stakeholders and LGA executives of the PDP to solicit for their support in his bid to emerge candidate of the party and the governor at the general elections.

The United Nations Mayor for Peace noted that he has the interest of the youths, the elderly and children at heart, promising that he will put things in order if elected the next governor of the state.

The governorship hopeful stated that power belongs to the people, urging the stakeholders to join him in his efforts to take back power to the people.

Receiving Don Lulu on behalf of the councillors, stakeholders and executives, the Chairman of PDP in the local government Chief Emmanuel Onwuchekwa said their prayer is that Abia should be governed by a youth like Don Lulu.

Chief Emmanuel Onwuchekwa maintained that the PDP governorship hopeful has the capacity and enough exposure to rewrite the history of Abia state, and prayed for his success at the polls. The Leader of Bende Legislative Council, Rt Hon Acho Undensi, in his remarks stressed that what Abia needs is change, adding that what is required now is a young and vibrant candidate to drive the change. He pledged their support to Mayor Lucky Igbokwe in his governorship aspiration.

On his part, Chief PC Onyegbu, former state chairman of the PDP, described Mayor Lucky Igbokwe as a good man with good policies. He commended Don Lulu’s proposed medical insurance policy for the old and unemployed in the society, saying they are noble initiatives.

He thanked Mayor Igbokwe for his boldness and frankness in his mission statement, while he admonished him to continue to remain forthright always as a truthful man he is. Chief PC Onyegbu said that it’s God that gives power, and prayed God to grant his (Don Lulu) heart desires.

Others who spoke at the meeting were the youth leader, the member of the LGA Exco and Hon Ndu Ukagha the Chairman of Chairmen, who all eulogised Mayor Lucky Igbokwe’s philanthropy and humanitarian activities. They promised to help in his campaigns and to support him till the end.

The Abia State Deputy Whip, Rt Hon Kelechi Onuzurike said he believes in the capacity of Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, a reason why he has endorsed him for the Abia governorship race come 2023.

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the recent attacks by bandits on communities in Zamfara State.

Report has it that no fewer than 55 people were killed in separate attacks by bandits in four Zamfara communities in three days.

The affected communities are Sabon Gari Damri, Damri, and Kalahe – in Bakura Local Government Area, as well as Faru in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara.

In a statement on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President asked the military to stop the killings by the terrorists.

“We mustn’t allow the return of days when the bandits had a free hand to do as they wished,” he was quoted to have said. “The rural folk in Zamfara and elsewhere must be allowed to have peace.

“Therefore, the momentum that has been developed must be sustained in order to bring closure to the activities of these murderers.”

He expressed condolences to the families of the victims as well as the government and people of the State, adding that the combined efforts of the Federal and State governments must do all that can be done to bring an immediate end to the horrific killings.

President Buhari, however, commended the military for the incessant onslaught and for not showing any let up as they continue to achieve positive outcomes based on their current operational trajectory in Zamfara, as well as other states in the North West.

According to him, there appears to be relative calm in the state with situations returning to normal in most parts and locals in the rural communities ready to live their lives normally again.

The President, however, decried several breaches recorded recently, especially in view of the latest attacks on the communities where a number of casualties were recorded.

A governorship aspirant in Abia State on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP Dr. Samson Orji also known as SCOURJ has said if elected governor in 2023, he will ensure he fills potholes in Abia roads whether they are state or federal government roads.

In an interview with Vanguard recently in Umuahia, he also assured that he will construct teachers quarters in secondary schools in the state.

The former House of Assembly member and former Commissioner further assured that under his watch as governor, security vote will be publicly accounted for.

According to him, if elected governor, he will have EFCC liaison officers in his office to checkmate if there will be any misappropriation of funds.

He said, “Within my first 100 days in office people will see it that this is governance in action that this man has come with the fear of God and has come for his people. Secondly, within my 100 days in office, I will fill up all the potholes on the road in Abia – whether they are state or federal roads.

“It will be operation fill up potholes with asphalt. I will fill up all the existing roads to make them motorable. Why won’t they be filed up? What will be the duty of government If people cannot pass freely on a smooth road. I will also construct teachers’ quarters in Secondary schools.

“My security vote will be accounted for publicly. Commissioner for Finance and the Accountant General will be mandated on a quarterly basis to render accounts about the revenue of the state and how it is spent including my security vote. That which is not feasible with the ordinary allocations will have to be tackled with my security votes.

“On the day of myself inauguration as governor, I will invite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC; and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, to deploy Desk officers to my office. I want them to monitor us and see if we are going to divert a dime from official purposes.

“My Permanent Secretaries, Directors, and civIL servants will be under strict instructions to behave themselves because there will be zero tolerance for corruption. When those working under you discover you are not stealing money, diverting money or hiding away money they will sit up because they will know that if they are caught you will not come to their rescue.”

The Idima Abam, Arochukwu LGA-born businessman and construction expert, therefore, called on the people of the state to support him to emerge governor in 2023, assuring that he will make them proud.

Governor Mohammed Badaru of Jigawa State has said that President Muhammadu Buhari sleeps and wakes up with the common man in his heart.

Badaru, who is the chairman APC Governorship primaries, stated this during interview with Channels TV’s Politics Today.

Badaru said, “President Buhari ran this government with the fear of God and to the best of his ability. And he sleeps and wakes up with the common man in his heart; how can he improve the life of the common man. That much I know and because of people will see the sincerity of what we are doing and understand the circumstances.

“We inherited a dead country and resuscitated it. When we came in, 26 states were not paying salaries. Even then there were earning close to $80 par barrel. Nigerians know what these people had done and they will never vote for PDP again.”

Badaru added that in 2023 Nigerians would vote APC back to power because they have the history what PDP did to the country.

He added, “They have the history of what transpired between 1999 to date. They will vote us back to power because they know we’re committed to their cause.

“Nigeria was an economy that was import-dependent before we came in, completely being oil-dependent. And our sense of income is in sense of crude oil. We’re selling crude oil at $100 to $140 par barrel and we’re using that dollar to import almost everything we use.

“Then suddenly prices crushed. Our demand, taste and income value didn’t fall, but the dollar revenue fall down and that economy we had no reserve to take care of what is happening. What miracle could have happened. Is Buhari the person that causes that top happen?”
