The National Women Leader of the New Nigerian People’s Party, NNPP, Dr Maryam Jummai Yasin yesterday said that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, brought horrible change like poverty and insecurity to the country.

Dr. Yasin also said that due to hardship and poverty as a result of bad governance the Nigerian youth have resorted to taking drugs out of frustrations.

But she has also assured that come 2023, the NNPP will form the government at the national level and bring about a better change for Nigerians.

Speaking during a meeting with zonal and state women leaders of the party in Abuja, Dr Yasin also assured Nigerians of a better life as soon as the party forms the government in 2023.

She said Nigerians are yearning for a new Nigeria and the ruling party only brought a horrible change which had led to rise in insecurity, poverty, job loss and other socio-economic challenges facing the country.

The NNPP Women leader called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe those in APC who purchased the N100 million presidential nomination form.

According to her, Nigerians have been yearning for a new Nigeria, so with this party, we are rest assured that we have chosen the right path.

“You can see that Nigerians have gone through a lot, we have suffered a lot, a lot of people have been disenfranchised, a lot of people have been suffering, many people do not have food to eat, they cannot even sustain a daily food, our children are out there without jobs, and the universities have been on strike.

“We want a change, not the change that was brought by our sister party, those changes are horrible changes, we never expected that, and we are not interested in such a change.

“Nigerian need good water, we need electricity, we need good roads, we need hospitals with equipment that will take care of the health of Nigerians.

“You can imagine when Ebola and Covid-19 broke out in Nigeria that was when the government in power was exposed, a lot of hospitals had no facilities, there are competent doctors but there are no facilities.

“Our children and women have been subjected to taking drugs because of frustration, in those days women are not found into crime, but these days women have been endemic in crime, women are used too stealing money from offices, but now because of the situation, there is no good moral value, things are not working the way it should be.

“That is why we chose to be part of this movement, the movement that will take us to the promised land, the movement that we have hope on, that movement that is action based.

“We are now out to make a change, the better change, the change that Nigerians want, and we are assuring them that they will not be disappointed in them. We are sure that we are going to take the mantle of leadership at Aso Rock.”

Abia PDP Chairman, Okere Hails Igbokwe's Manifesto, Says It'll Serve As Guiding Light To Delegates

Abia state PDP chairman, Dr. Alwell Asiforo Okere has praised the manifesto of a governorship aspirant in the state, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, saying it will help in guiding the decision of the delegates in choosing the party’s candidate ahead of the 2023 governorship election.

He spoke on Tuesday shortly after the entertainment guru, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, popularly known as Don Lulu officially declared his intention to run for the governorship of the state at PDP Secretariat in Umuahia.

He also lauded Igbokwe for focusing on issue instead of attacking personality, urging him to go about his consultations peacefully.

He assured that the party will give a level playing field to all aspirants, stating that the will of the people will prevail.

Earlier, Mayor Igbokwe said he is a better option to reposition the state and put it on the path of development.

He said he is armed with the needed technical and experiential capacity to govern the state and harness numerous potentials in it.

He said, “Without the efforts of the past leadership, however, it has become necessary that I bridge the gap, to restore stability, and rebuild the confidence of our youths and the good people of our state.

“To that extent, I have joined in this race with my full chest, to say I appreciate other people who as well aspire for the same position, but however, I pledge that I offer a better option, to galvanize the young people, the men and women of Abia State, to instill a sense of belonging in our administration, which will bring hope and pride to our people.

“I possess the requisite skills and experience required to harness the vast resources in the state for productive and developmental purposes.

“My team and I are ready to turn around the fortunes of the state by revolutionising all the sectors of governance with focus on the masses.

“If given the PDP ticket and elected governor, I will reposition Abia for economic prosperity by creating the enabling environment for industry to thrive, with a better approach to internally generated revenue that would reduce dependence on federation allocations.

“Education will be one of the major objectives of my aspiration, the sector will be reformed to include not only building of schools, but also the provision of incentives to teachers.”

Why We Have Not Released UTME Results – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board had yet to commence releasing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination because of some internal appraisal, its Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said on Tuesday.

According to him, JAMB wouldn’t want to release results because it had asked people to submit reports, particularly of malpractices.

Oloyede stated these in an interview with The PUNCH in Abuja during a meeting of the National Youth Service Corps management and with Registrars of Corps Producing Institutions in Nigeria.

He said, “Yes, we have no reason not to release the results but we are also doing some internal appraisal. One, we don’t want this situation where you release results and you start to withdraw some; so we have asked people to submit reports, particularly of malpractices.

“And for the first day after the result was ready, we now scrutinized and we saw that about 40 per cent of the report were not in. So, why release 60 per cent and create confusion? We have insisted that this year, we will not release the results until we have all the reports of examination malpractices.

“So, the issue of releasing results and now coming, they will be very few rather than the large number that we had. The results are ready but we believe we need to have all the reports; we have about 70 per cent of reports now updated but we want 100 per cent.

“The result will be out; for instance, I was told that the exam of Saturday is completed now. The results are in; when I get to the office today I will append my signature and it will go out.”

The JAMB CEO also spoke about those people who could not write the UTME based on technical challenges in some CBT centres.

“I don’t know those schools. There are no technical hitches because those you called BVN matters we have reassigned all of them from yesterday (Monday) for today (Tuesday). We created four sections to clear all of them because it is not the fault of the candidate.

“We have a technical hitch from one of our service providers and where they were supposed to use one character they used another and it created some problems for the candidates. But we have addressed that by reassigning them and all of them without exception at the end of tomorrow, we are putting them fourth section.

“You know the third section finishes at around 3:30 pm, so we deliberately created a fourth section to make sure we clear them by tomorrow because we have no time.”

Nnamdi Kanu: Metuh Urges Buhari To Seek Political Solution To South East Unrest

Former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to adopt a political solution that will lead to the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and end the degenerating restiveness in the Southeast region of the country.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday Metuh asserted that waiting for a legal solution and the continued use of the military options is “rather worsening the situation and leading to violence and avoidable loss of lives adding that a political solution that involves dialogue and understanding of sensibilities will bring the desired peace in the region”.

Stating that the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu and use of force in the Southeast will not bring the desired solution, Metuh stated that such will rather “heighten hostilities and result in more bloodshed”.

Metuh urged the Federal Government not to repeat the mistake the nation made in the handling of the Boko Haram issue in 2009 when the sect’s leader, Mohammed Yusuf was killed extrajudicially; a situation that led to the escalation of violent conflict and insurgency in the North East.

He said Government should learn from the South African experience, where the incarceration of Nelson Mandela and the use of force against agitation did not solve the problem but led to more economic and social crises until the Government of South Africa applied a political solution and brought lasting peace to that country

According to Metuh, the situation in the Southeast is very heartrending. It is worsening by the day with the creation of camps and the imposition of illegal levies by faceless groups.

The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, waiting for a legal solution, and the adoption of military options or use of force to suppress agitation has not helped. Instead, it is worsening the situation. It is coming at a great cost to human lives and a huge expense to the Federal Government. Meanwhile, this is what a simple political solution and dialogue will solve.

“Already, some unknown interests have hijacked the genuine agitation of the people and we can see the havoc such already causing the south East with the emergence of extortionist gangs and mafia groups who are now killing innocent people and blaming it on agitations. Social and economic lives are being crippled and citizens are under siege.

“President Buhari must not let this continue, we must learn from our past. We mustn’t let the South East degenerate into another North East. We should learn from the South African experience where the incarceration of Nelson Mandela and the use of force on the people did not solve the problem until the government applied a political solution. Only a political solution in the release of Nnamdi Kanu can solve the problem of the southeast region,” Metuh Stated.

Speaking on the chances of the South East picking the PDP’s presidential ticket, the former PDP scribe said the region must pick a consensus candidate so as to have the region’s bloc vote at the convention.

“For us to have an Igbo Presidential candidate in the PDP, we must present a consensus candidate. All the aspirants from the Southeast must sit down, and select just one aspirant and we can then negotiate with other regions and get the ticket,” he said.

“The PDP in southeast must be able to build an alliance with other regions in the south, that is South-South and South West. Then, we can convince at least one of the other regions in the North of the need to vote for our candidate. This is the best way we can achieve a PDP presidential candidate from the southeast”, Metuh said.

“Whilst I concede that the PDP has an incredible array of excellent materials for the Presidency, we must accept that one of our own is rated as the best in the field by all and sundry. We should present him as our consensus candidate and seek the buy-in of other zones”.

We’re Not Pampering Boko Haram Terrorists, Says Army

0

Contrary to speculations , the Nigerian Army has denied ever pampering repentant terrorists, insisting that those who surrendered during the Boko Haram war were only treated humanely in line with the provisions of the law.

While speaking on Channels Television, the Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Chris Musa said, “we are not pampering them; we are just being in line with the statutory laws on the ground and that is why we ensure that all those ones that have been profiled are brought in and kept secure.

Already in the Northeast, according to him, the Army had over 51,000 ex Boko Haram members and their families which included 11,000 males .

“Among the males, we have some that were enslaved, those that were born there, and those that were conscripted. Gradually, those are going to be sorted out, and then the legal system will take its course.”

“We get information as quickly as things are happening….sometimes, the challenge might probably be the way to communicate because we do not have network everywhere; but as soon as they get to where they can send messages across to us, they let us know.

“That has assisted us greatly in subduing the insurgents to such an extent that we have so much peace. We have over 51,000 insurgents and their family members that have surrendered to us.”

“Normally there will be some concerns and I don’t blame the public for that, but I just want to assure them that we are professionals and we have done this before in other countries where we had issues of disarmament.”

“What goes on here now is that as soon as any of them is willing to surrender, he reports straight to the closest military location. The commander on ground has his troops ready to disarm them, take over their arms, search them and profile them.”

“Then the state government provides buses to move them to the camps already provided. The state government takes care of the management and administration, what we do is to ensure that the perimeter is secured. So, we want to assure members of the communities that they are well secured and that they will not pose any threat to anybody.”

“I know everybody is asking why are they even surrendering now? For us, the surrendering started since July 2021 and for them to have been there to date shows you some level of commitment and why are they are surrendering.”

“The death of Shekau has opened a lot of opportunities because while he was there, he was very brutal; anybody who attempts to escape will be killed. They were scared of him.”

“But they knew we would treat them professionally; by the laws of war, once your enemies surrender, you are duty-bound to receive him and treat him humanely until the process of the legal system takes its course, and that is what we are doing,” he said.

Russia, Algeria Plan To Sign Document Confirming New Quality Of Relations – Lavrov

Russia and Algeria plan to sign a treaty confirming a new quality of bilateral relations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday.

“All these years we have been actively developing trade and economic cooperation,” Lavrov said at a meeting with his Algerian counterpart Ramtane Lamamra.

Lavrov noted that given “the rapidly developing friendly ties” in order to maintain the high level of cooperation the countries plan to sign “a new inter-state strategic document, which will reflect the new quality of our relations.”

Russia’s top diplomat last visited Algeria in 2019. His latest visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic relations. The Declaration on Strategic Partnership signed on April 4, 2001 promotes the development of political dialogue and stepping up cooperation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that Moscow and Algeria are united by strong and friendly relations, highlighting plans to foster military and technical cooperation with the republic. In 2020 Putin also announced that he hoped Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune would pay a visit to Russia.

Algeria is among Russia’s three major trade partners in Africa.

Lithuania Declares Russia A Perpetrator Of Terrorism

The Lithuanian Parliament on Tuesday passed a resolution declaring Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a “genocide” and Russia a perpetrator of terrorism.

In the resolution, the Seimas, Lithuania’s Parliament, recognized “the full-scale armed aggression — war — against Ukraine by the armed forces of the Russian Federation and its political and military leadership […] as genocide against the Ukrainian people.”

Passed unanimously, the resolution accuses Russian military forces of “deliberately and systematically targeting civilian targets,” declaring Russia “a state that supports and perpetrates terrorism.”

The Seimas also called for the establishment of an international tribunal to investigate alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis told CNN Tuesday that the decision is a recognition of reality and “gives impetus for further legal investigations into the situation.”

In his first reaction to the unanimous passage of the resolution, Landsbergis said the designations must be followed up by investigations, such as those being carried out by the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice.

“We haven’t seen anything like it since the Second World War, so that might give additional speed to the investigation and resources that they require, because especially ICC … they have as much money as the countries provide and as many investigators as the countries provide,” said Landsbergis, who noted Lithuania was one of the first countries to provide financial assistance to the investigators.

“We clearly have reasons to call this an act of genocide,” Landsbergis said in an interview in Washington. “Putin clearly stated that he does not believe that Ukraine has the right to exist as a country and he’s trying to prove his point by killing basically entire civilian cities full of civilians.”

Landsbergis said that the international community must not only work to strengthen mechanisms aimed at accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity, but perhaps look for new ones because “Russia truly changed the reality with their attack on Ukraine.”

“We had trust that after the Second World War, we built the mechanism that should empower this ‘never again’ concept. Obviously the mechanisms were not sufficient. And so we really need now to start working on strengthening those mechanisms,” he said “I think that we not only need to strengthen what we built, but maybe even to look for new mechanisms and new instruments that would really allow us once again to say this was the last time.”
