Gunmen Set Ablaze Court, LG Secretariat In Anambra (PHOTOS)

Suspected gunmen have set ablaze the Idemili North Local Government Secretariat in Ogidi and a Magistrates’ court located.

Sources said the arsonists entered the premises on Sunday night to carry out the act.

They were said to burn down all files, properties in the secretariat, including the secretariat building.

Videos and pictures of the incident circulating online also showed that the entire buildings have been reduced to rubble.

Vehicles parked inside the local government secretariat were also burnt to ashes.

Confirming the incident, the state police command’s spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, attributed the incident to unidentified arsonists.

Ikenga said, “Yes, the incident was confirmed, and our men were there to restore normalcy.

“Right now, the fire has been put off, and calm has been restored to the area.”

Former minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajuiba has apologized to Nigerian students over the protracted strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Recall that the union recently extended the industrial action by another 12 weeks, citing a lack of readiness by concerned officials to resolve the crisis.

Addressing the issue, the presidential hopeful of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said all his children attended public universities, and that two of them are also affected by the strike.

This was made known on Sunday by Nwajuiba while being interviewed on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme.

Nwajiuba said he shares in the responsibility for the situation, but noted that strikes are not the best approach for ASUU to address its grievances.

He said: “I do apologize to Nigerian students because as their minister, I will take responsibility. But also, on behalf of the federal government, I would say ‘please understand what the issues are.

“All my four children have passed through Nigerian universities. I still have two who are at home now, because they are all in public universities.”

Nwajiuba said he is also a product of public universities, hence, he empathizes with ASUU.

He said: “My position has not been that ASUU is talking rubbish. ASUU has a case, they are not making a case for themselves alone. ASUU is making a case for the entire university system.

“The only point of departure is that we have asked ASUU that strikes can’t cure the problem.

“We need them in class, we need our children back in school. It hurts parents. It hurts us. Like I keep saying, my children are here, I don’t have children in private universities. My wife and they are battling it at home.”

Nwajiuba also appealed to ASUU to “consider leaving the option of strike and work with the government”, adding that the issues cannot be solved “at once”.

“This government has done more than any other government to meet ASUU. We are going to resolve the issue. All the matrixes for it to be resolved are already before Mr President,” he added.

Dr Suleiman Audu, a member of the Ahmed Lawan campaign council on Monday described as untrue reports that the Senate President has stepped down for former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu.

An online report with the heading “Senate President, Ahmed Lawan steps down from the presidential race, pledges to support and collapse his political structure for APC frontline Aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu” is currently circulating across social media platforms.

But Audu, in a statement dismissed the report as “sheer mischief planted by those who want to gain the APC presidential ticket by deceit.”

He said, “Our attention has been called to an online publication that the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Ahmed Lawan has stepped down for former Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the APC presidential ticket.

“The report is sheer mischief and planted by those who want to gain the APC ticket by deceit. For clarity purposes, Ahmed Lawan is in the race to win. Tinubu should be the one stepping down for him. It is injustice for the South-West to rule for 8 years under President Olusegun Obasanjo and another 8 years as Vice President to even contemplate of contesting the 2023 presidential election.

“Tinubu should be patriotic enough to step down for the Senate President for equity, justice and fairness. We expected him as an elder statesman to show understanding by supporting either the South-East or North-East geo-political zones. It is not late for him to back Senator Ahmed Lawan to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Ahmed Lawan is eminently qualified for the APC presidential ticket as someone from the North-East geo-political zone that is yet to produce the president since 1999 and as the most engaging and result-oriented senate president since 1999.

“Tinubu should consider his health, peace, unity and progress of the nation above his personal interest,” he stated.

Erik ten Hag has snubbed Ajax’s squad win celebrations in favor of joining Manchester United.

The Ajax players and its outgoing manager, Ten Hag, were scheduled to travel to Curacao for their post-season tour, but the Dutchman has opted out and instead begin work with Manchester United on Monday.

Senator Ibikunle Amosun, former Governor of Ogun state has disclosed that he is not in the presidential race to align with Chief Bola Tinubu or any other aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the former governor, he did not obtain the APC senatorial form, nor did he attend the screening exercise organized for APC senatorial aspirants, as being peddled by some individuals.

Recall that some media houses reported that there were rumours over the weekend that Amosun had agreed to step down for Tinubu, having been screened and cleared for the Ogun Central senatorial race.

But, in a swift reaction, Amosun debunked the rumour spreading on social media, saying the “two news stories are false.”

According to a statement signed by his media aide, Bola Adeyemi, he said that the Ogun Central Senator “procured only the forms for the presidential ticket of the APC and did not attend the screening exercise for Senatorial aspirants because he is not one.”

While urging Nigerians to dismiss the “false news”, Adeyemi maintained that “Amosun is in the race for the presidential ticket of the APC and has no plans to align with any politician in the race.”

One Dead, 4 Critically Injured In California Church Shooting

One person was killed and four others were gravely injured in a mass shooting at a church in Laguna Woods, California.

It was the second mass shooting in 24 hours, following the massacre at Buffalo Tops in New York.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, one suspect has been apprehended in connection with the recent shooting at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods.

“Deputies are responding to reports of a shooting at a church on the 24000 block of El Toro Road in Laguna Woods.

“Multiple victims have been shot. اون لاين كازينو We have detained one person and have recovered a weapon that may be involved,” the office of the sheriff of Orange County, California, said on Twitter.

Laguna Woods is a community in Southern California of about 16,000 people.

According to an NBC affiliate in Los Angeles, the incident occurred at Geneva Presbyterian Church. The actual number of those hurt, as well as the type of their injuries, were not immediately known.

Strike: Minister Reveals Why ASUU, FG Are Yet To Reach Agreement

Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Labour and Employment, has revealed why the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government have been unable to reach an agreement on the ongoing strike.

ASUU decided on Monday to extend its statewide strike for another three months.

After multiple failed reconciliation sessions between both sides, the strike began on February 14, 2022.

Speaking at a press conference in Ilorin to mark the 40th anniversary of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Keyamo, who was represented by MINILS Director-General, Comrade Isa Aremu, said the issue was about two conflicts of rights and interests.

According to him, the ASUU strike had turned into strife that had worsened the education sector in Nigeria.

He said, “Labour disputes are highly technical issues and need the relevant technical requirements and knowledge to interrogate.

“The issue here are two, dispute of rights and dispute of interests. Among the demands of ASUU is the issue of stagnant payment, which I also fully support. In fact, it is embarrassing for a Prof to be receiving N350,000 as a monthly salary, although the minimum wage should only be for the rock bottom workers. These are issues of right.

“The real conflict is between ASUU and the Ministry of Education. Issues of funding and other agitations are disputes of interest which need a different approach, not to go on strike. Even if you go on strike over a dispute of rights, how long can that last is another question?

“Strike is a temporary stoppage of work, but when you go on strike for 22 months and you shut down the system, that has become a strife.”

Sokoto State Govt Relaxes 24-Hour Curfew

Sokoto State government has relaxed the 24-hour curfew that was imposed in the metropolis following a violent protest in the state capital over the arrest of some youths linked to the murder of Debora Samuel, a 200 student who was alleged to have made a blasphemous statement against Prophet Muhammad.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Isah Bajini, and made available to the Nigerian Tribune on Monday.

The statement noted that “Sequel to the briefing by the security heads in the state, the State Governor, Rt Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has ordered the relaxation of the 24-hour curfew in force in Sokoto metropolis

“The revised curfew will now be from dusk to dawn in Sokoto township. This is with a view to affording people the window to pursue their legitimate businesses and other means of livelihood.”

The government, however, advised people to maintain peace in this regard, as it will not condone any breach of law and order in the state
