Why We Haven’t Released Some UTME Results – JAMB

Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board has spoken on its decision to withhold some results of the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination may not be released.

However, the Head, of Public Affairs and Protocol in JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, has disclosed that the examination body has not released some results because of malpractice, misconduct, breach of procedural processes, and incomplete review of centre.

Benjamin made the disclosure in an interview with PUNCH on Monday.

He also urged candidates to check their results properly.

Benjamin said, “We have released results for this batch. There are many factors that can lead to a result being withheld. It could be as a result of examination malpractice, the candidate’s inability to conduct himself or herself properly, a breach in procedural process, or a review of the centre.”

Earlier, JAMB in a bulletin vowed to withhold the results of candidates found guilty of malpractices.

The bulletin read in part, “About 1.4 million candidates have so far taken the examination across the nation, with some examination towns and centres completing their own allotted number of candidates for the year while the results of sessions already taken will be released to the respective candidates.

“However, the release of these results is with a caveat that after previewing the Closed Circuit Television footage of the conduct of the examination, the result of any candidate found wanting would be withdrawn if it had been released or withheld if not yet released.”

Fabian advised candidates to send UTMERESULT in one word to 55019 to have their results checked.

He said, “To check the 2022 UTME result, all a candidate needs to do is to simply send UTMERESULT to 55019 using the same phone number that he or she used for registration.

“The result will be sent as a response to the candidate’s text message. This is the only process of checking the 2022 UTME results for now as the board has not uploaded it on its website for obvious reasons.

“In addition, candidates are forewarned that they would, as usual, receive all kinds of messages from desperate fraudsters on how to check their results differ from the aforementioned one.

“Hence, JAMB urges all candidates to ignore all such messages on how to check their 2022 UTME results as they are all products of deceit aimed at misleading them.”

About 1.7 million candidates took part in the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination nationwide in 755 registered computer-based centres.

The Department of State Services have been tasked by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, on Monday, to arrest the Chief Imam of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Sheikh Abubakar Jibril.

HURIWA called for the arrest of Sheikh Abubakar Jibril for allegedly inciting Muslims against the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan-Kukah.

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said Jibril was captured in a video that has gone viral allegedly telling his many Muslim followers to get the home address of Kukah and possibly attack the bishop if he is the person that sent Deborah Samuel Emmanuel Yakubu to the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto where she allegedly blasphemed against the prophet of Islam.

Rampaging hoodlums on Saturday vandalized at least two parishes presided over by Bishop Kukah and it took the swift response of security operatives to stop any attack on Kukah’s personal residence.

Rioters had on Thursday stoned and burnt a 200-level Home Economics student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, Deborah Yakubu, for alleged blasphemy of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The police arrested two suspects and protesters demanded their release. The young demonstrators turned violent, vandalized, looted, and burnt traders’ shops, churches, and residential apartments perceived to be owned by Christians.

HURIWA accused security agencies as well as 18 of the 19 governors in the whole of northern Nigeria of supporting the brutal killing of blasphemers and for grooming Islamic extremists through the implementation of policies skewed in favour of Moslems to the neglect of many other citizens of other faiths and belief systems in those states.

The group cited Section 10 of the 1999 constitution as saying the government of the federation or of a state shall not adopt any religion as the state religion.

HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “By this statement, HURIWA is putting the Department of State Services on notice to hold Sheikh Abubakar Jibril accountable for the fatal mob attack on Kukah’s parishes on Saturday.

“In fact we think the constant bashing of spokespersons of President Muhammadu Buhari against Bishop Kukah each time the Cleric issues critiques of some anti people’s and anti-democracy thereby encouraging haters of truth and objectivity to target Right Reverend Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto for attacks by such Islamic fanatics as has just happened with the recorded video by the Sokoto Islamic preacher who openly incited his followers against Bishop Kukah.

“Jibril, in a trending video, erroneously accused Bishop Kukah of motivating Deborah to commit alleged blasphemy and that he should stop or else he will be dealt with. The inflammatory cleric (Jibril) then asked if they know his (Kukah’s) house and the listeners shouted, ‘Yes we do’. He is inciting them to attack Bishop Kukah.

“HURIWA charges the DSS to arrest Jibril immediately for questioning as the secret police had probed and persecuted the late deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Obadiah Mailafia; and other vocal Christian leaders like Kukah himself.

“Anything short of the arrest of Jibril is sentimental and condemnable. Nothing must happen to Kukah. Nigerians are watching and are not fools.

“HURIWA again enjoins all Nigerians of conscience to come out en masse as announced by the Christian Association of Nigeria and protest the killing of Deborah to pressure the Muhammadu Buhari led government to serve justice on the matter and for her killers to be punished according to extant laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The Police have arraigned two suspects in connection with the murder of the 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, Deborah Samuel, who was accused of blasphemy.

The suspects – Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunchi – who are also students of the college, were arraigned before a magistrate’s court in the state on Monday.

According to the Police First Information Report, the suspects were arraigned as a result of the mob action which led to the lynching of the student.

After the suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges, the police prosecutor, Inspector Khalil Musa, urged the court for another date to enable the police complete their investigation.

However, the defence counsels led by Professor Mansur Ibrahim, who did not oppose the application, pleaded with the court to grant the defendants bail, citing sections 157, 161(a,f) and 164 of the administration of criminal justice law of Sokoto state, as well as 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

The court however adjourned ruling on the application to a later date which would be communicated to the lawyers.

It, therefore, directed the defendants to be remanded at the Sokoto Correctional Centre

Alleged Blasphemy: We're Pained, Saddened By Deborah's Death, Parents Weep

The parents of the late Deborah Samuel of Shagari College of Education Sokoto, Sokoto State have described the death of their daughter as sad and painful, saying they have left her killers to God.

Recall that the remains of Deborah were laid to rest in her hometown, Tungan Magajiya in Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State Saturday evening.

She was stoned to death and set ablaze on Thursday by her fellow students for allegedly making a blasphemous statement on a WhatsApp group against Prophet Mohammed.

Reacting to the death of their daughter, the bereaved parents said they have nothing to say or do regarding the loss of their child, but have decided to leave everything in the hands of God.

Speaking with DAILY POST, the father, Mr. Emmanuel Garba, security personnel with the Niger State Water Works Cooperation at Tungan-Magajiya said, “we can say or do anything, except to take it easy as an act of God. We have left all to God, we have decided to take it like that”.

On who brought back the body of his deceased daughter from Sokoto State, the father explained that he personally went and brought back her remains to be buried.

“I personally went and brought back the body of my daughter to enable me to bury my own child. This is because keeping her in the morgue will not return her back.

“When I got there, I met government officials and made them understand the need to allow me take her back home and they agreed with me. When we got to the morgue, those in charge asked me to sign the necessary documents and I did. They released the corpse to me.”

On who paid for the transportation, Garba, “I personally, paid the sum of N120,000 to the driver out of many that refused to convey her back home and it is because of the condition of the remains. Most drivers we approached all refused except one.”

Confirming the call by the Sokoto State Government that the body of his daughter should not be returned home, the father of the deceased stated, “the government wanted me to leave the remains, when they called me, I said no, they should allow me to please, bury my daughter.”

Also, the mother, Mrs. Alheri Emmanuel, told our reporter that Deborah was the second of the seven children, adding that it’s so sad to have lost her at such a young age, whom they were relying on to help support them in the future.

On her medical condition, the mother of the deceased explained that she is stable now and discharged from the hospital, where she was admitted upon hearing the news of the gruesome murder of her daughter.

Amid tears, Mrs. Alheri stated,“I have nothing to say, I am grateful to God and for your efforts. I have given God my heart and may God strengthen me. We have nothing to say.

“Because of what happened to me, I will no longer send my children to schools where so much money is involved. Because of her education, the education of some of her siblings suffered as it is so difficult to care for them all at the same time. And, now things are difficult for us”.

Also, her elder brother, Nakaka Garba, when asked for his reaction, he simply stated, “I have nothing to say, we are pained by what happened, but we have left all to God.”

On why their daughter answered Deborah ‘Samuel’ instead of ‘Garba’, the father further added, “she has been living with my brother since she was in primary school and had been using the name”.

Inflation Rises To 16.82% In April 2022 - NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, said inflation rate rose to 16.82 percent in April  2022, representing a 0.90 percent rise when compared to 15.92  per cent recorded in March 2022.

The bureau also said that the composite food index rose year-on-year (YoY) by  1.17 basis points to 18.37  percent in April  2022 from 17.20  per cent in March 2022.

In its Consumer Price Index (CPI) released today, the bureau said the rise in food index was due to increases in prices of bread and cereals, food products, potatoes, yam, and other tubers, wine, fish, meat, and oils

The NBS said: “In April 2022, the CPI which measures inflation increased to 16.82 percent on a YoY basis. This is 1.3 percent points lower compared to the rate record-ed in April 2021 (18.12) percent. This means that the headline inflation rate slowed down in April when compared to the same month in the previous year.

“Increases were recorded in all COICOP divisions that yielded the Headline index.

“On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, the Headline index increased to 1.76 percent in April 2022, this is a 0.02 percent rate higher than the rate recorded in March 2022 (1.74) percent.

“The urban inflation rate increased to 17.35 percent (YoY) in April 2022 from 18.68 percent recorded in April 2021, while the rural inflation rate increased to 16.32 percent in April 2022 from 17.57 percent in April 2021.

“On a MoM basis, the urban index rose to 1.78 percent in April 2022, up by 0.02 from the rate recorded in March 2022 (1.76), while the rural index also rose to 1.74 percent in April 2022, up by 0.01 from the rate that was recorded in March 2022 (1.73) percent.”

On the food index, NBS said: “The composite food index rose to 18.37 percent in April 2022 compared to 22.72 percent in April 2021.

This rise in the food index was caused by increases in the prices of bread and cereals, food products, potatoes, yam, and other tubers, wine, fish, meat, and oils

“On a MoM basis, the food sub-index increased to 2.00 percent in April 2022, up by 0.01 percent points from 1.99 percent recorded in March 2022.

“In April 2022, food inflation on a YoY basis was highest in Kogi (22.79 per cent ), Kwara (21.56 per cent), and Ebonyi (21.45 per cent), while Sokoto (14.85 per cent), Kaduna (15.55 per cent and Anambra (16.68 per cent) recorded the slowest rise in YoY food inflation.”

The Supreme Court on Monday invited President Muhammadu Buhari to appear before it on Thursday, May 19 for a hearing in a suit he instituted against the National Assembly challenging Section 84 (12) of the 2022 Electoral Act.

Also invited to be in court on the same day are the National Assembly and its leadership to defend various constitutional breaches raised against them by the Presidency.

A hearing notice issued by the apex court and sighted by our correspondent indicated that the invitation of President Buhari was served on him through his private lawyer, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi.

By implications, Fagbemi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN, is to profer arguments against the National Assembly on the invalidity and unconstitutionality of Section 84 (12) of the new Electoral Act.

At the time of this report, DAILY POST could not ascertain the legal practitioner that will stand for the National Assembly to justify the inclusion of the contentious section in the new Electoral Act.

The suit filed on April 29 is marked; SC/ CV/ 504/2022 and has President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami SAN as plaintiffs while the National Assembly is the sole respondent.

Our correspondent gathered that the Supreme Court took notice of the affidavit of urgency in support of the originating summons filed by Buhari, hence, the resolution to give it a speedy hearing.

Besides, the fates of political appointees are said to be hanging in the balance and unless the apex court quickly makes pronouncements on the effect of the Electoral Act on them, their individual political ambitions may be jeopardized.

ABN TV gathered that upon receipt of the hearing notice through its Legal Department, the leadership of the National Assembly has contacted a legal giant, Adegboyega Awomolo SAN to lead its defence in the suit but details could not be obtained.

Our correspondent also learnt that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Dr Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad has put in place, a seven-man panel of justices of the Court to do justice to the constitutional issues from both sides of the two parties.

Hoodlums Set EEDC Office Ablaze In Anambra (PHOTOS)

The Ogidi District office of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) was set ablaze by unidentified criminal elements in the early hours of Monday.

ABN TV learnt that the development left about 32 utility and operational vehicles burnt, including other assets and equipment within the premises.

This is coming same time a Magistrate Court and a local government Secretariat were equally set ablaze by arsonists.

The Head, Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr Emeka Ezeh, confirmed the incident to DailyPost not ABN TV.

Ezeh lamented that efforts made to reach the Anambra State Fire Service at the time to come and rescue the situation did not yield any positive result, leaving members of staff who were on ground to assist in salvaging the situation helpless, as they watched the office building and other assets go down in flames.

According to him, “it later took the intervention of the Honourable Commissioner for Utilities, Anambra State, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, at about 9.05 am this morning to bring the Fire Service team down to the scene of the incident”.

The management of EEDC expressed shock over this ugly incident which is happening at a time the company has invested so much to improve its operations and transform the socio-economic landscape of the area.

“This is a big loss to EEDC, and a great setback to the efforts being made by the company to strengthen its network and improve the quality of service to its customers within Ogidi and Anambra State at large.

“We have already brought this development to the attention of the relevant authorities and it is expected that proper investigation will be carried out and the perpetrators of this dastardly act brought to book.

“There is no way a developing economy as ours can progress if we continue to record this kind of incident,” he said.

It was gathered that having gained access into the office complex by pulling down part of the wall, the criminals attacked one of the security personnel manning the office and inflicted several machete wounds on his head, leg, and arm as they were demanding his gun, while his other colleagues ran for their lives.

The victim is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

“We thank God that no life was lost. We condemn this unjustifiable act and pray such does not reoccur”, Ezeh said.

Unidentified gunmen on Sunday night allegedly killed two military men in a shootout at 3-3 estate, Nkwelle Ezunaka, near Onitsha, Anambra State, ABN TV learnt.

A resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, the gunmen shot dead two soldiers during the attack.

According to the resident, the shooting which started at about 10pm, lasted for hours.

It was gathered that the gunmen had attacked some military men at a spot where they were stationed within the estate.

According to a source, the incident threw the neighbourhood into panic as gunshots rent the air.

The source said, “It is true. Yesterday night at housing estate gate, gunmen attacked the military men securing us around 10pm. The attack lasted three hours. Two soldiers were killed.”

ABN TV learnt that the gunmen also visited the Government Reserved Area (GRA) in Onitsha, where they also shot intermittently.

Gunmen Kidnap Anambra Lawmaker

A member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Dr. Okechukwu Okoye, has been kidnapped.

The lawmaker, popularly known as “Okey Di Okey” was kidnapped late Sunday.

Okoye is representing the Aguata North constituency, the same community as the governor of the state, Professor Charles Soludo.

Details of his kidnap were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, but it was gathered that the lawmaker was taken away inside his black Sienna car within his constituency.

Confirming the incident, the state police spokesman, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, said the lawmaker’s black Siena bus, which he was driving before the incident, had been recovered.

Ikenga said the command had launched a manhunt for the kidnappers with the aim of rescuing the lawmaker.

ASUU Strike: Ogun Students Shut Down Benin-Ore Highway

Students protesting the lingering strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, on Monday, have reportedly blocked the Sagamu-Benin-Ore highway.

The students on a joint protest are from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye; Tai Solarin University of Education, and the Federal University Of Agriculture, Abeokuta, all in Ogun State.

They bore on their banner, “Stop Toying with Our Education,” as they marched on the road in protest.

Commenting on their action, the TASUED Students’ Union President, Sharon Great, said, “We have all come here today to shut down the Benin-Ore Expressway so as to make our demands met by the Federal Government and to also pass a message to the state governments.

“Nigerian universities need proper funding. It is the responsibility of the FG and state government to bring about a viable educational system. That is why we have gathered here today to show that our demands must be met by the Federal Government.

According to Sharon, I am in solidarity with ASUU, their demands are genuine. If the FG can’t hold down the salaries of political office holders, why would they hold down the salaries of lecturers who work to mold Nigerian future leaders?

“ASUU strike must end!” He said.

ABN TV had reported that ASUU, alongside the Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has said the Federal Government did not reach a strong agreement with them that can lead to calling off the industrial actions.

ASUU started its strike on February 14, 2022, making it 91 days today.

ASUU, NASU, and SSANU embarked on industrial actions while demanding improved welfare packages, better working conditions, and the implementation of various labour agreements signed with the Federal Government between 2009 and 2020.
