NBA Has Failed To Protect Rule Of Law - Governor Wike

Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers state has publicly criticized the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association over its failure to defend the rule of law.

According to Wike, the NBA goes beyond issuing statements to taking concrete actions against attacks on the nation’s judiciary.

The charge was given by Wike at the book presentation in honour of Justice Mary Odili as part of activities marking her retirement from the Supreme Court and her 70th birthday, which was held in Port Harcourt on Monday.

The governor regretted the NBA’s lackluster approach to social change, which, according to him, is more of a disservice to the nation and exposes it to contempt.

Wike said, “What is even worrisome on the part of the NBA President is his failure to admit that the NBA, including the inner and outer bar which he leads, has failed in its responsibility to protect the rule of law and defend the judiciary from punitive intimidation and erosion of its independence by the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government.

“It is quite unfortunate that the NBA is only good at issuing statements of condemnation without more, while the judiciary continues to suffer ferocious bouts of harassment from a Federal Government that has become notorious for its contemptuous attitude towards the rule of law and the rights of Nigerians to an effective justice system.”

He also expressed his disagreement with some speakers at last Thursday’s valedictory court session organised in honour of Justice Odili who laid the blame on politicians over the problems that the judiciary suffers.

Wike said Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), who spoke for the body of senior advocates at the valedictory court session, identified corruption as the bane of the Nigerian judiciary and pointed the finger of responsibility at politicians, lawyers and the Federal Government.

He noted that while the senior lawyer was largely correct with respect to the issues of forum shopping by lawyers and the intimidation of the courts by the Federal Government, he was, however, wrong in his allusion to political cases as responsible for the debasement of Nigerian courts.

“Now, if I may ask: are lawyers not behind the contemptuous criticisms of judges by clients? How many lawyers have withdrawn from political cases in protest against unwarranted castigation of the court by clients?”

While praising her principal over his economic achievement in Kogi State, the director-general noted that statistics from the World Bank on states’ accountability rating in Nigeria indicate that Kogi ranks top among other states in the country.

Abiola-Costello, daughter of the winner of the 1993 presidential election, late Chief MKO Abiola, said this on Monday while addressing journalists in Lagos ahead of the primaries slated for May 30 and 31, in Abuja.

She said, “This is a man who met a debt profile of about N135bn in Kogi State when he assumed office in 2016 but has been able to reduce it to about N70bn. This is in addition to his huge investments in education, agriculture, security and infrastructural developments. The World Bank accountability ranking of states in Nigeria evaluated Kogi as second in 2017, first in 2018, and 2019.

“The draft report for 2021 shows that Kogi scored 100 percent in all the areas and from indications, the state will maintain the first position in 2021, judging from the draft report that was released just yesterday.

“I am proud of GYB because of his development record in Kogi State. This is a governor that is always looking for progress and the development of the lives of his people. This is me, a Yoruba, supporting someone from the North Central.

“There is no progress without demands; I lost both parents, though unfortunately because Nigerians believed in them. I’ve been working with GYB for a while and I have seen that he has the courage and intelligence to deliver Nigeria.”

In terms of insecurity, she said the governor had been able to reduce crime rates to the barest minimum, adding that through a well-crafted management system, he had united all the groups in the multi-ethnic state.

Deborah Samuel: Nigeria Has Crumbled Under Buhari, Says Catholic Bishop

Bishop Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese has accused President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration of deliberately crumbling Nigeria.

This was stated by Onah in reaction to the gruesome murder of the student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto State over alleged blasphemy on Prophet Mohammed

Onah lamented how violence, corruption, and other vices have become culture and tradition in this part of the world.

The clergyman, who is angered by the realities in the country, expressed sadness over attacks on the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Mathew Kuka.

Bishop Onah lamented how Kuka who is the voice of the poor northerners is now the target of attack due to religious extremism.

He said, “My dear friends, I must be honest with you, today, I would have preferred to lock myself up in my chapel to pray and to weep for my nation where darkness has descended.

“To weep and pray for my church that is being folded out of existence in the world and Nigeria, to weep and pray for Deborah Samuel who was killed because she found herself in a part of the country where she thought was home but not.

“To weep and to pray for our protocol leaders under whose watch the country has crumbled and they look for who to blame on the mess which they have put all of us.

“I would have preferred not to be standing before you here now to tell you about love, the liturgy of today to reflect on the essence and meaning of Christianity, the love we should have for one another.

500 PDP Members Dump Party For APC

About 500 members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State have resigned their membership in the party.

They have now joined the All Progressives Congress, citing the strides and achievements of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola for their decision to join the ruling party.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ismail Omipidan, on Monday, the defectors were said to be members of five different PDP groups within the local government area.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Raufu Lukman, explained that they decided to join the ruling party because Oyetola’s administration had performed well in office.

He said, “As you can see, we are here today in large numbers to confidently denounce our membership from the PDP and as well announce to the whole world that we are in the APC, the party that means well to the masses.

“Our decision to leave the former party at this critical time is an indication of the fact that the present administration under the leadership of Governor Oyetola has performed creditably well in all the sectors of the economy and we are bent to contribute our own quota to collectively advance our state for the good and betterment of the citizenry.

“My colleagues and I who are members of the defecting groups running to 500 to 550 members are resolute to work collectively with others to ensure all-round victory for the party.”

The Osun State Commissioner for Finance, Bola Oyebamiji, while receiving the defectors, commended them for taking a bold step to join the APC.

Deborah Samuel: Police Declare Fleeing Suspects In Viral Video Wanted

Police in Sokoto has declared fleeing suspects captured in viral video of the killing and subsequent setting on fire of Deborah Samuel wanted for culpable homicide.

The declaration was contained in a press release signed by the command’s public relations officer, ASP Sanusi Abubakar.

Recall that Samuel was stoned to death and then set ablaze by her classmates at Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto

The deceased who was at 200-level was accused of blasphemy.

Abubakar further disclosed that those arrested at the scene of the incident while dispersing the mob had been charged to court and the court remanded them in prison.

“The Sokoto State Command under the able leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Kamaldeen Okunlola, has declared the suspects spotted on the viral video wanted.

“The Command is using these mediums to reiterate its commitment towards apprehending the suspects. The command has already deployed all its intelligence and on the lookout for the suspects .

“Members of the public are enjoined to cooperate with the police and report any mere identification to the command or any security outfit in their domain.”

World football governing body, FIFA, has celebrated Asisat Oshoala for finishing as top scorer in the Primera Iberdrola (Spanish women’s first division).

Oshoala concluded the season with 20 goals and three assists in 19 games despite a three month injury-induced layoff.

Geyse Ferreira of Real Madrid also scored 20 goals but did it in 27 appearances and recorded one assist.

And reacting to Oshoala’s top scorer’s award, FIFA described her performance for Barcelona this term as perfect.
