Gerrard: Aston Villa Will Make Life More Difficult For Man City

Aston Villa manager, Steve Gerrard has reiterated that they will give out their best against Manchester City in the final Premier League game.

Gerrard made this known in an interview with Sky Sports after the team’s 1-1 draw against Burnley on Thursday.

Recall that Liverpool are counting on Villa to take a point or more from the champions, in order to keep their title bid alive.

“We’ll try and make it as difficult as we can for them. We will fight for everything we can.”

“Well, maybe from their point of view but I’m not involved in a relegation or a title, am I? I’m the Aston Villa manager. They’re three important points. We’ll have a full house there.

“We’ve got 20,000 people on a waiting list to come and watch the team so it’s my responsibility to win both games. Thank you.”

“We want two positive results,” Gerrard added. “We want to finish as strong as we can and we want to improve our league position.

“Obviously, they’re going to be two different challenges, we know that, one fighting at the top-end of the league and one at the bottom. We need to prepare for both in the best way that we can.

“Moving forward, this club cannot finish 14th again. We need to change things and come back better and stronger next season.

“The first part of the job was to stay safe, but we wanted to finish in the top half. Moving forward we need to improve in a lot of departments. We need to recruit well,” Gerrard said.

The Liverpool legend is the current boss of the West Midlands team and knows that victory for the Villains would open the door for his old club to claim the Premier League title.

Villa themselves can finish as high as ninth should results go in their favour but cannot reach any of the European places.

NFF Charges Flying Eagles To Win 2022 WAFU B U-20 Tournament

General Secretary of Nigeria Football Federation, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi has commended the Flying Eagles for reaching the final of the 2022 WAFU B U-20 tournament in Niger Republic and charges the team to go all out and win the trophy, reports says.

The Flying Eagles qualified for the final with a penalty kick deep into extra time to edge Ivory Coast’s Junior Elephants 2-1 and now square up with Benin Republic’s Baby Squirrels today [Friday] in Niamey, Niger Republic

“My joy is that the team, after failing to qualify in the last edition of the Africa U-20 championship, made it by beating defending champions Ghana and strong Ivorien team. I must commend the Flying Eagles for that, and at the same time urge them not to rest in their oars until they win the trophy,” Sanusi said.

“The NFF will give them all the necessary support and encouragement to ensure that they bring back the trophy. The team and their coaches have done very well by securing the ticket against all odds and winning the trophy will be the icing on the cake.”

Sanusi also attributed the impressive results of the Flying Eagles at the ongoing WAFU B U-20 tournament to the development strides the NFF has made in youth developments, adding that the Nigerian football ruling body will not relent in it’s efforts to further develop the game.

Nigeria, one of the two finalists from the WAFU B tournament, have booked a ticket to next year’s U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, scheduled for February 18 to March 12 2023.

Aston Villa have emerged as the top favourites to sign Rangers’ Nigerian defender, Calvin Bassey, this summer.

Coral bookmakers say that Steven Gerrard’s side are 4/1 to capture the rising star.

Gerrard brought the left-back turned centre-back to Glasgow two years ago, as he joined from Leicester City.

Reports recently have suggested that the Liverpool legend would be keen to reunite with Bassey at Villa Park, with the defender putting in several impressive performances for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men.

And the leading bookies have Villa at 4/1 to sign the top talent by the end of the summer window.

Leicester are available at 5/1, while Fulham, Newcastle and Southampton are all 7-1 to secure his services.

Despite Dwindling Resources; Tambuwal, Wike, Fayemi, 6 Other Governors Squander Millions On Private Jets

Nine serving governors have so far squandered millions of naira to charter private jets to move around the country to advance their presidential ambitions, Daily Trust analysis revealed (not ABN TV).

Ahead of the presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), presidential aspirants including the nine serving governors have been travelling across the 36 states and FCT to woo delegates.

Daily Trust reports that there are 38 presidential aspirants in both APC and PDP including the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, among others.

While all the aspirants have been travelling across the country in chartered aircraft, the spending of the nine serving governors has attracted public attention and scrutiny.

The governors, who are aspiring for the presidency, include Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Emmanuel Udom (Akwa Ibom), Ben Ayade (Cross River), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Mohammed Badaru Abubakar (Jigawa) and Yahaya Bello (Kogi).

Of the nine governors, only Bala Mohammed is serving his first term, the rest are completing their second term in office.
Reports revealed that government activities are being relegated to the background in some of the states as the governors are preoccupied in their presidential campaigns with allegations that they are using state resources.

Cost of hiring jets

At the moment, a private jet charter costs between $7,000 (over N4m at 580/$) to $10,000 (N5.8m) per hour depending on the size of the plane.

An operator says it could be higher when one requests for a bigger luxury jet, which could carry up to 11 passengers like Challenger or Beechcraft Hawker with up to 13 passenger capacity.

In addition, a charter Embraer ERJ 145 for instance, with a 50-passenger capacity, could even cost more depending on the number of waiting hours at the destination airport.

Also, it was gathered that in line with the industry requirement, the private jet operators charge 3,000 dollars per hour, depending on the airline after landing at the airport.

“If it is a two-leg trip – to and fro, you will pay 3,000 dollars per hour as landing and parking charges. It would start reading after the first three hours. The charges vary from airlines,” an aviation expert said.

Boom in the industry

A private jet operator who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity said that there is a boost in demand for private jets.
Ibrahim Aliyu, a security expert said most of the governors could not travel by road to any of the states in the country because of insecurity hence their resort to traveling by air.

“It will be suicidal for the politically-exposed persons to embark on journeys by road and so, they rather use the privileges at their disposal and criss-cross Nigeria by air.

“As you can see, some of the aspirants handling non-executive positions had to drop their ambitions when President Buhari asked them to resign. The reason is simple- they would no longer have access to unlimited resources to foot the bills of rigorous campaigns,” he said.

Daily Trust learnt that there has been a marginal increase in the cost of aircraft charter following inflation and the high cost of operation, hence additional spending by those who prefer air travel. One of the factors that have driven the increase in the cost of charters is aviation fuel, which has virtually quadrupled.

Despite this, that segment of the aviation business continues to boom even as more airlines join the business recently.

It would be recalled that a start-up airline, Xejet Aviation, recently commenced operation to provide only business class passengers.

Aviation analyst, Group Capt. John Ojikutu in a chat with our correspondent said though private charter services are unscheduled flights, they contribute to the aeronautical revenue of the airport authorities.

“Theirs are unscheduled flights but they pay charges on navigational and air traffic services, landing and parking for day and night at different charges and handling charges. All these are additional revenue earnings for the various aviation services.

“Yes, their flights can increase the unscheduled air traffic movements by about 50 per cent or more and therefore the revenues of the service providers,” he said.

Wike, Tambuwal compete for trips
Analysis of reported trips of the governors as at yesterday showed that Governor Wike has visited 20 states including Kaduna, Edo, Kogi, Lagos, Katsina, Kano, Ekiti, Ondo and Cross River all by air using private jets.
It is however not clear whether he is chattering the planes or using those belonging to Rivers State.

“There is no difference between using a chartered aircraft or the one belonging to the state,” said Sadiq Sabo, a political pundit.

“The point is that it is wrong to use state resources in terms of equipment or otherwise to facilitate personal endeavours,” he said. The Rivers State governor who is eyeing the presidential ticket of the PDP has also visited Ebonyi, Adamawa, Plateau, Anambra, Niger, Imo, Ogun, Oyo, Bayelsa, Benue and Kebbi states using private jets.
Like his Rivers State counterpart, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State has visited 20 states.

Tambuwal, who is also eyeing the PDP presidential ticket has been to Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Kogi, Niger, Gombe, Kaduna and Zamfara States.

The Sokoto governor has also flown to Plateau, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Kogi, FCT, Ogun and Osun States.

Fayemi’s 16 trips gulp millions

On his part, the Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has visited 16 states in the course of his presidential campaigns. Fayemi, who chairs the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), wants to pick the presidential ticket of the APC.
The states visited by Fayemi are; Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Kano, Nasarawa, Benue, Kebbi, Sokoto, Rivers, Anambra, Ogun, Osun and Ondo.

Bala Mohammed’s visit to 12 states

Coming next to Fayemi, is the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed. Unlike Fayemi, Mohammed is eyeing the ticket of the PDP. Despite the fact that he is a first term governor, he is deeply engrossed in his presidential ambition.
States visited by the Bauchi governor, who is said to have also picked the governorship forms of the PDP include; FCT, Anambra, Enugu, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Oyo, Kaduna, Niger, Jigawa, Taraba and Katsina.

Udom was in six states

So far, the Akwa Ibom Governor, Emmanuel Udom, has visited six states including Plateau, Katsina, Edo, Oyo, Cross River and Gombe. He is one of the 15 contenders cleared for the PDP presidential primaries.

Daily Trust could not establish the number of trips embarked upon by the Cross River, Jigawa, Kogi and Ebonyi States governors.

A governorship aspirant in Abia State on the platform of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA Sir Chikwe Udensi has said the level of corruption thriving under the leadership of Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu in the state is not peddled by opposition alone but members of his PDP and those working with him.

He said the level of corruption under this government calls to question on what the government is doing with resources allocated to it from the federal government and its IGR.

Speaking on a radio programme, Open Parliament on Love FM Umuahia monitored by ABN TV on Wednesday, Sir Udensi a security consultant said the level of corruption in Abia is responsible for the backlog of salaries owed workers and the depleting infrastructure in the state.

Reacting to an allegation by a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in governor Ikpeazu’s cabinet, Chief Charles Ogbonna that the government is not being accountable to the people with resources at its disposal, Sir Udensi said he has been vindicated that poor management is the challenge with Abia and not lack of resources.

He noted that Ebonyi State with lesser income than Abia has more infrastructure, insisting that lack of proper utilization of the state’s funds to better the lives of the people calls for a change of government in the state.

Sir Udensi also said a former Commissioner for Finance in Abia, Obinna Oriaku had also alleged that resources of the state is being mismanaged.

“This Commissioner for Information, Eze Chikamnayo also gave us information some years ago on the state of affairs in Abia, datas of which I have and documented.

“Don’t forget also that we have retired permanent secretaries who have given gory information of the management of the state resources.

“We also have a record of 18 Directors from Abia State civil service who have given us the data and information on the rot in Abia State.

“Enyinnaya Abaribe, a distinguished Senator and a chieftain of PDP is telling us that it is all mayhem with the finance of Abia State,” he stated.

While stating that he is not ready to probe what has happened in the past if elected governor in 2023, he called on the people of Abia to change what he called corrupt and poorly performing government.

He called on governor Okezie Ikpeazu to stop servicing loyalists and pay attention to the welfare of Abians.

Udensi alleged that over seventy percent of Abia resources is being used to service godfather, stating that such practice must be put to an end.

The member representing Bagwai/Shanono Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, Ali Ibrahim Isah Shanono, has returned to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) few days after defecting to the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP).

Daily Trust reports that 14 House of Assembly members in Kano defected to the NNPP from the People Democratic Party (PDP) and the APC.

Shanono, a member of APC, also defected to the NNPP, but later dumped the new party for APC.

In a letter he sent to the house, the member deactivated his membership of NNPP and rejoined APC.

Hon Isah Shanono pledged to work round the clock for the success of the APC party at the forthcoming polls.

The political calculation of Kano is changing ahead of the of 2023 elections.

Senator Ibrahim Shekarau dumped APC for the NNPP on Wednesday. Many aggrieved APC chieftains have also joined the fast growing party.

The Indigenous People of Biafra has advised the General Overseer of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Kumuyi, to cancel the planned crusade in Abia State because of security concerns in the South-East.

In a statement on Thursday, the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, cautioned Kumuyi to take note of the security situation in the South-East as he comes to Aba for his gospel crusade.

Powerful said, “Let him and the organisers of the crusade make sure that nothing happens. The security of this region is not good because of political and criminal activities, therefore we advise him to stop this crusade for security reasons.

“IPOB will not allow anyone to die because of this crusade scheduled to hold in Aba. The operation of criminals operating as unknown gunmen infiltrating the events is high and they will blame it on IPOB.

“We ask him to pray for an end to the insecurity in Biafra land if he can. We charge Christians and men of God in Biafra land to engage God in fervent prayers to expose all those behind the insecurity in our land.”

He urged the pastor to pray against bad leaders and saboteurs in the South-East and Nigeria.

The statement added, “Let him use the opportunity to pray against the powers holding the people captive in Nigeria in his church in Lagos.

“We equally want them to be united against injustice. We had expected them to demand justice for the innocent Deborah Yakubu burnt alive by Muslim fanatics in Sokoto State.

“Her killers are walking freely today and 34 lawyers shamelessly volunteered to defend her killers but Christians are just watching them.

“The double-faced Nigeria security agencies only managed to arrest two of her killers because they are Muslims but if it were to be in the South-East, all the youths on the street will be in a police cell by now while the unlucky ones would have been killed.

“How many Igbo or Christian lawyers came to defend our leader fighting for the freedom of all Biafrans? But 34 Muslim lawyers have come in defence of the killers of Deborah Yakubu?

“Is it not time Christians and men of God woke up to the realities in Nigeria? They should support Biafra and Oduduwa agitators in their bid to free Biafra and Oduduwa republics from the Islamic bondage in Nigeria so that they will enjoy the freedom of worship in both republics.

“Leah Shuaibu is still in captivity today because she is a Christian but all the Muslims abducted along with her have since been freed. Christians must support IPOB to liberate them from bondage in Nigeria.

“Kumuyi should also pray against wicked Leaders and saboteurs in Biafra land and Nigeria. They are the real problems of the people. Let him use the opportunity to pray against the powers holding people captive in Nigeria in his church in Lagos.”

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has ripped into Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike following his description of the group as a “paper tiger” that had failed to protect the Judiciary.

NBA President Olumide Akpata defended the association’s record and – connecting Wike’s comments to his presidential ambition – said the Governor “cannot and should not be allowed to use the NBA as fodder of any sort for his vaulting ambition.”

Akpata reeled out several instances where the body had risen in defence of the judiciary, including when it fought in the cause of recently retired Supreme Court Justice Mary Peter-Odili, the Chief Judge of Cross River State, Justice Akon Ikpeme and Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court.

He said Wike’s forgetfulness of these and more, suggested “a dissonance that is most disconcerting and should give one serious cause for concern,” especially as the Rivers governor is a “senior member of the Bar.

Wike, who spoke on Tuesday during a book launch in honour of Justice Peter-Odili, said among others, that the NBA had become a “paper tiger” that had not only failed in its responsibility to protect the Judiciary in Nigeria, but had also been unable to rescue it from political intimidation.

The NBA reapondes to Wike in a statement by Akpata, seen by The Nation and titled: “NBA HAS FAILED TO PROTECT THE NIGERIAN JUDICIARY- MY RESPONSE TO GOVERNOR WIKE’S DIATRIBE”.

Akpata said: “As President of the NBA, it is not usual for me to respond to criticisms regarding the activities or performance of the NBA, and indeed our philosophy has been to welcome all such criticisms and take useful lessons therefrom. But I am unable to allow the Governor of Rivers State make such baseless allegations against the NBA particularly as he is a senior member of the legal profession who will be presumed by many to be speaking from a position of knowledge.

“It is indeed quite ironic that Governor Wike made these unfortunate statements at an event held in honour of the Honourable Justice Mary Peter-Odili in support of whom, the NBA stood firm in the face of that brazen attack on her home in Abuja by some persons who are now standing trial in our law courts. That Governor Wike has chosen so quickly, to either forget or ignore this and other actions of the NBA in support of the Judiciary is suggestive of a dissonance that is most disconcerting and should give one serious cause for concern.

“It is very convenient for Governor Wike to ask Nigerian lawyers (as he did at the Book Launch) to emulate their apparently more courageous Pakistani colleagues when the issues at stake do not concern him directly, but when in 2019 the very same Nigerian lawyers had the “temerity” to question his handling of the security situation in Rivers State and threatened to boycott the courts if there was no abatement of the rising insecurity in the State, he was only too quick to lambast the lawyers and to withdraw his “support” for the NBA in the State.

“While we understand that Governor Wike is currently on the political soapbox and, like a man with the proverbial new hammer, to whom any and everything is a nail, he will latch unto any chance to sell his candidacy, he cannot and should not be allowed to use the NBA as fodder of any sort for his vaulting ambition.”

He said the politico-legal history of Nigeria is replete with the commendable role that the NBA has played, and continues to play, as a primary defender of the rule of law and protector of the Judiciary in Nigeria.

Kidnappers Gun Down Six Kano Residents, Abduct Village Head

Federal Government on Thursday said that the unknown gunmen operating in the Southeast are terrorists and that they are being treated in the language they understand.

The Federal Government also said that though the newly promoted former Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu has been retired from the Police Force, he would be prosecuted if eventually indicted by the probe panel chaired by Justice Ayo Salami (retd).

The Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi disclosed this when he was featured at the ministerial briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Dingyadi at the briefing enumerated key achievements in his ministry including the introduction of community policing, resuscitation of the police public complaints committee, improved police welfare, and acquisition of a special force base at Zuba, Abuja among others.

Asked whether the intelligence community of the government have been able to identify the unknown gunmen causing havoc in the South-east since the members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, have disowned the killings in the region, Dingyadi said “Okay, the unknown gunmen, you want to know who they are? I want to tell you that they are unknown gunmen and they are also criminals. They’re terrorists and we are dealing with them in the language they understand.”

Fielding question on why the Police authorities have yet to act on the recommendations of the Justice Salami probe panel set up by the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2020 to investigate the corruption allegations against Magu but went ahead to promote him to an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, Dingyadi said:

“This is an issue that should have been addressed by the Police Service Commission, which has the responsibility to conduct promotions of the police. They are not here. And I am aware that the Police Service Commission is directly under the presidency.

“So I cannot speak for them. But what I know is that Mr Magu has already retired and that is what I can tell you now. The fact that he was promoted is a matter for the Police Commission to maybe throw more light on. I’m not aware of the position of the government on the report you are talking about and I think it is still being under consideration. It doesn’t mean that when he retires, the laws will not catch up with him whenever he is found guilty. So, I think it’s not finished business.”

Recall that the Salami’s panel upon conclusion of its assignment turned in its report in November of the same year to the President.

The minister, refrained from updating the media on the corruption charges against Abba Kyari, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police now in custody facing prosecution, saying that the matter is in court and would amount to subjudice to comment on it.

He said the Police have begun to deploy technology in dealing with crimes and criminalities in the country, adding that the Police authorities were striving hard to be civil in their operations and would deploy firearms were necessary for the discharge of their responsibilities.

On the issue of community policing the Minister of Police Affairs said that 25,000 constabularies have been trained and deployed to various communities across the country and that the Ministry was considering the recruitment of additional 10,000 police constables in the next one month or two in line with the President’s directive to employ 40,000 men within his second tenure.

“On whether we have started the implementation of community policing programme and the role of communities in the community policing programme. It has commenced and we couldn’t have trained 25,000 constabularies if the programme has not started. So the programme is on the course and is in all the 36 states of the Federation, and these constabularies have been posted to their various communities.

“And the responsibility of the communities in which these constabularies are being posted is to cooperate with these constabularies to ensure that they assist them in sharing intelligence, in reporting cases that need to be reported. And to assist them in resolving issues that can be easily or locally resolved. So the community policing programme is there for the communities to ensure that they collaborate with these constabularies to provide peace in their communities.”

Responding to the request for psychiatric tests for policemen to ascertain their psychological stability, the minister said the men were being made to undergo rigorous and extensive screening, including medical tests on prospective recruits, assuring that the best available were those engaged in the system.

He however urged the community leaders to cooperate with the constabularies posted to them by gathering and sharing intelligence as well as reporting cases that needed to be reported.

104 All-Male APC Aspirants Set To Contest For 30 Jigawa Assembly Seats

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has revealed those who did not submit their presidential nomination and expression of interest forms after the purchase.

The party also confirmed that about 25 forms were submitted.

Speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Barr. Felix Morka, said 25 forms were filled and submitted.

According to him, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele and the Minister of Petroleum for State, Timipreye Sylva, did not submit their forms.

“For some of them, it’s a bit iffy. What I have this time, we’ve 28 who purchased form and at the last count, we have 25 who made submission.

“But three of them did not. They’re Senator Chris Ngige, Godwin Emefiele and then we have Timipre Sylva,” he said.

However, this could suggest that the presidential forms bought for the likes of former President Goodluck Jonathan and African Development Bank boss, Akinwumi Adesina, were actually submitted.

The AfDB President Adesina, had recently dismissed claims that he is running for the presidency.

This was after a coalition of 28 groups purchased and submitted the nomination and expression of interest forms of the APC on behalf of Adesina.

Though Adesina in a statement issued on Tuesday, maintained that he is not running for president, it is not clear if those who bought the forms have the capacity to fill them by themselves and also submit them.

There are speculations that the APC postponed the screening of its presidential aspirants to May 23 to allow Jonathan and others to submit their nomination forms, but the party’s mouthpiece could confirm that all forms, including that of Jonathan, have been submitted except three.

Former President of Nigeria, Jonathan had said he didn’t authorize the APC presidential nomination form purchased for him by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association.

The former President, through a statement issued in Abuja by his spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze, said he had no link to the northern coalition that purchased the form.

He admonished those behind the charade to desist from further defacing his name and urged Nigerians to disregard it.

But barely 48 hours after dissociating himself from moves by some groups to draft him into the 2023 presidential race, Jonathan reportedly joined the APC in Bayelsa and finally made up his mind to vie for the top post.
