Zamfara APC Reconciliation Not For Personal Interest Says Governor Abdulaziz Yari

The former Zamfara Governor, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, has said that the recent reconciliation between him and Gov Bello Matawalle was not based on their personal gain but on the interest of the state.

Yari made the statement on Thursday at his residence in Talata Mafara town, Talata-Mafara Local Government Area while receiving members of the state Executive Council who paid him a courtesy visit.

Yari commended Matawalle for his efforts in ensuring the success of the reconciliation drive and development of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members of the State Executive Council, including commissioners and special advisers, were led by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Kabiru Balarabe.

Yari noted that the recent reconciliation of APC warring factions in the state was the work of Almighty God.

“This came at the right time when unity, peace, and stability are highly needed to address a lot of issues affecting our dear state.

“I and Gov Matawalle decided to reconcile our differences for the interest of our people, not for any personal gain.

“I commend this high delegation for the visit and I urge you to extend this reconciliation drive to our teeming supporters at grassroots,” Yari added.

“As government representatives, we should extend good messages for the development of our great party and general development of the state.

“Gov Matawalle should be commended for his efforts to ensure the success of this reconciliation.

“We should support him as our leader with good intention, to promote peace, stability and general development of our dear state,” the former governor explained.

Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government who led the delegation, Alhaji Kabiru Balarabe, said the visit was to commend the former governor for accepting the APC reconciliation drive.

“As our leaders, we are happy with the way and manner you reconciled your differences.

“We have a strong belief that it will yield positive results for the development of our dear state.

Operation Resumes At Lagos Airport As Security Operatives Investigate Mangled Corpse Found On Runway

Flight operations have resumed at the Lagos Airport as security operatives investigate a mangled corpse found on the runway

WithinNigeria earlier reported today, that the international wing of the airport was temporarily shut after the disfigured body of a dead man was found on Runway 18R. The corpse was discovered during a routine runway inspection by personnel of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

Security operatives have begun investigations into the incident which happened on Thursday.

Daily Trust reports that the airport management had called on security agencies to probe the corpse and unravel the identity of the deceased.

A source told the newspaper that the dead body could not have been that of an airport official because no worker would be wandering around the highly restricted area.

He said security operatives, including the Department of State Services (DSS), have been invited to probe the situation.

Also, to identify the body, some forensic analysis would be required as it could not be easily identified.

“As I am talking to you, security operatives including the police, Department of State Service (DSS), and the Aviation Security (AVSEC) are currently investigating it. But we are suspecting it is a case of a stowaway.

“But the investigation will determine this. Nobody has been reported missing by any agency, company, or organization at the airport. So, the person may be a stowaway,” the source had said.

The Regional Manager of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Victoria Shi’naba had also confirmed that an investigation was ongoing.

However, she noted that the incident did not have much effect on flight operations as the body was evacuated immediately.

Also, flight operations that were erstwhile suspended have resumed, according to reports.

My Presidential Bid Not A Do-Or-Die Affair - Gov Udom Emmanuel

A presidential hopeful on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Udom Emmanuel has stated that he will work with anyone the party elects as its candidate for 2023.

This was stated on Friday by the Akwa Ibom governor when he met the party’s delegates in Benue state.

Emmanuel said he joined the presidential race because he has “what it takes” to turn the country around.

‘’I’m running for the presidency because things have really gone bad and l have what it takes to salvage the situation for the sake of posterity,” he said.

“Mine is not a do or die affair. If it is the will of God, I am ready and willing and capable to take up the challenge. If God chooses me, I am ready to partner with him. If he says it is someone one, I am ready to accept and work with God’s choice.”

Emmanuel said the economic and security situation in the country “have really gone bad”,  adding that it is “imperative to rescue the sinking ship of Nigeria and Nigerians”.

“Things cannot just continue like this, therefore, I offer myself to serve,” the governor added.

In his remarks, Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue, said Emmanuel is “one of the few people” who have shown concern about the plight of residents in the state.

“Benue has been under siege for a long time and very few people have shown concern and support,” Ortom said.

“As Buhari and APC said that they will take Nigeria from top to bottom, we are not only at the bottom now but beneath the bottom. We have been down in all spheres of life.

“We cannot continue like this. I believe the least of the PDP aspirants is better than the best in APC. We must pray but also we must take action. Your coming forward to offer yourself is the right step in the right direction.”

Naira Value Rises At Exchange Markets As EFCC Continues Traders’ Arrests

The Central Bank of Nigeria CBN has said that paper currency will soon be out of circulation, urging market men and women to sign into the e-Naira.

The Delta State Branch Controller of CBN, Mr Godwin Okafor, stated this on Friday at the popular Ogbogonogo market during the market sensitisation on e-Naira.

He urged traders to key into the central bank’s e-Naira policy.

He said, “We here at the market today to sensitise the market people on the use of e-Naira. It is fully backed by CBN unlike Bitcoin has no legal backing.”

The consultant of CBN on e-Naira, Dr. Aminu Bizi, said Delta was chosen as the second state to sensitize market women on e-Naira after Lagos.

“We are here to sensitise market men and women shop to shop on the use of e-Naira. CBN has gone behind ATM, POS, therefore, we are going to meet the Okada/tricycle union on this policy.

“Paper currency will soon be out of circulation because CBN spent money to print money and people abuse the currency in the market, spraying at the occasion, payment of Okada/tricycle and others and CBN is losing”

He said the use of e-Naira was effective, charges free unlike ATM and POS and cannot be hacked by fraudsters.

In his remark, the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Patrick Ukah, applauded CBN for e-Naira initiative.

Ukah who was represented by the Director of Finance and Account in the office of SSG, Mr. Benson Ojoko, said the state was delighted with CBN programmes, describing e-Naira as a laudable programme that has placed Nigeria in international finance.

China’s Demand For Russian Coal Is Making Up For Western Sanctions

0

China is buying record amounts of cheap Russian coal, even as Western nations slam Moscow with sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine.

In April, not only did the world’s second largest economy buy more coal from Russia than ever before, it also eliminated import tariffs on all types of coal, a move analysts say will mainly benefit Russian suppliers.

China’s coal imports from Russia nearly doubled between March and April, reaching 4.42 million metric tons, according to trade data from Refinitiv. Russia has overtaken Australia as China’s second biggest supplier since last year and now accounts for 19% of its coal imports, up from the 14% share it had in March.

The booming coal trade boosts both sides. Despite bold pledges to tackle the climate crisis, China is now focused on getting its economy out of a slump and needs coal to fuel power stations and make steel for infrastructure projects. Russia desperately needs new customers for its fossil fuels as they are shunned by the West.

Biden Arrives In South Korea With Worries Growing Over Possible North Korean Missile Test

President Joe Biden arrived South Korea Friday on a mission to reaffirm a key alliance at an uncertain moment in East Asia.

Even as the war in Ukraine has preoccupied Washington — and took up the first half of Biden’s day before he departed for Asia — provocations from North Korea have intensified and China continues flexing its economic and military might.
Biden wants to show his top partners here he can focus both eastward and westward, and that the United States has resources to help uphold democracy and sovereignty around the world.
Air Force One touched down at Osan Air Base, an American military installation outside the capital Seoul, at 5:22 p.m. local time (4:22 a.m. ET) after a lengthy journey from Washington.
Immediately after his arrival, Biden is planning to visit a Samsung semiconductor factory to emphasize the importance of strengthening American supply chains, which have been reliant on Chinese materials.
The stakes of Biden’s trip have been ratcheted higher by the threat of a nuclear or missile test from North Korea. The prospect looms over Biden’s stop in Seoul, where he was planning to tout economic partnership and security ties alongside the country’s newly elected President.
US intelligence assesses that North Korea may now be getting ready to fuel an intercontinental ballistic missile, one of the key final stages in preparing for a test launch, according to a US official familiar with the latest information. A possible fueling of a missile would mean that North Korea could conduct a test launch while Biden is in South Korea. Once a missile is fueled, launch usually comes quickly due to the risk of leaving a missile full of thousands of pounds of fuel on a launcher.
Biden and his aides have prepared contingencies should Pyongyang launch a long-range missile or conduct a seventh underground nuclear test, as US officials have warned. American officials have briefed their allies on the various possibilities. And should a test proceed, Biden and his South Korean counterpart have made plans for how they would jointly demonstrate a show of resolve.
“We know what we will do to respond to them. We have communicated with not just our allies, but also with China. And this could cause the United States really to increase our fortitude in terms of defending our allies and cause adjustments to the way that our military is postured in the region,” national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters aboard Air Force One as Biden made his way to Asia.
Such a scenario would only underscore the serious threat North Korea continues to pose to the region, even as the world’s — and Biden’s — attention has been directed in recent months toward Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Biden departed for Asia midday Thursday after meeting the leaders of Finland and Sweden at the White House to discuss their emergency applications to join NATO, a reflection of how the crisis has consumed much of his schedule. The lengthy trans-Pacific journey, the longest of Biden’s presidency so far, included a refueling stop in Alaska.
It’s Biden’s first time in Asia since taking office a year and a half ago. Covid-19 and other foreign crises have kept him away until now, but the simmering problems of Chinese expansionism and North Korean posturing remain major concerns for his administration.
Biden’s first engagement when he arrives is a tour of a Samsung semiconductor factory, where he’ll hail strong trade and economic ties between the US and Korea, particularly in advanced technologies. The Biden administration has worked over the past months to alleviate a shortage of semiconductors that has hurt American manufacturing, including cars and trucks, in part because shipments of some Chinese-made components were stalled due to factory shutdowns. Biden has prioritized separating American industry from Chinese supply chain snags, both through domestic production and sourcing key parts outside China.
Later on his trip, Biden is planning to unveil a new Indo-Pacific economic plan that spells out his trade ambitions in the region. He faces deep skepticism after his predecessor withdrew the US from the Trans Pacific Partnership, a massive trade pact negotiated in the Obama administration; leaders have wondered how durable Biden’s plan can be should Trump or another Republican take office in 2025.
Biden will visit Japan after a three-day stop in Seoul. Officials said he aimed to emphasize the war in Ukraine had only strengthened the American position in Asia by demonstrating the strength of US alliances.
“President Biden has rallied the free world in defense of Ukraine and in opposition to Russian aggression. He remains focused on ensuring that our efforts in those missions are successful. But he also intends to seize this moment — this pivotal moment — to assert bold and confident American leadership in another vital region of the world: the Indo-Pacific,” Sullivan said Wednesday.
Still, the potential for a provocative North Korean test during Biden’s trip was a sign that his administration’s efforts to engage Pyongyang in diplomacy have so far yielded little. Biden’s aides have tried unsuccessfully to restart talks with the North, receiving virtually no response to their outreach.
At the same time, the White House has mostly ruled out direct talks between Biden and Kim Jong Un, the country’s dictator, who met Biden’s predecessor three times — including on the North Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone.
Biden won’t visit the DMZ on his trip, unlike several of his recent predecessors. White House aides said they believed it was more important for the President to visit with US troops stationed in South Korea during his visit.
But he was expected to discuss the North Korean situation when he meets for bilateral talks Saturday with the new South Korean President Yoon Seok-youl, including new steps toward deterring the unprecedented level of provocations.
Yoon, a former prosecutor who has never held elective office before, campaigned as a staunch supporter of the US alliance, and has signaled his intent to expand South Korea’s foreign policy engagements beyond just dealing with the North. That’s welcome news for Biden, who is looking to strengthen alliances in Asia as he looks to counter China’s economic and territorial ambitions.
That has been a central facet of his foreign policy, but one that’s been obscured somewhat by the Ukraine war. In South Korea, administration officials see a new leader eager to cooperate with Washington on a range of issues and an advanced economy that could supplant current US reliance on China for certain critical technologies.

Chukwu: ‘Peseiro Could Be Another Westerhof’

0
Jose Peseiro

Former Super Eagles coach Christian Chukwu has urged Nigerians not to conclude that newly appointed Technical Adviser, Jose Peseiro, will not achieve success with the national team because he has not won a trophy with any national team.

The former Real Madrid assistant coach has won only one trophy in his coaching career, which was the Portuguese league cup when he was with Braga between 2012 and 2013.

He coached Saudi Arabia between 2009 and 2011 and also had a spell with the Venezuelan national team between 2020 and 2021, without winning a trophy.

However, Chukwu stated that former Eagles coach Clemens Westerhof came to Nigeria without any track record of success as a coach.

His reaction came after former chairman, technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr Chris Green, said Peseiro should have been allowed to come to Nigeria with his own backroom staff, rather than the NFF assigning him to work with indigenous coaches, which include Finidi George, Salisu Yusuf and Ike Shorunmu.

Green had argued that Peseiro could use it as an excuse in case he fails on the job.

But Chukwu insisted the notion that the 62-year-old has not won any trophy at the national team level does not come to play in football. He said it should not be used as a parameter to assess his worth.

“We shouldn’t be worried because I remember that when Westerhof came, he didn’t have any trophy to his name, he didn’t even have any criteria, but he came and perform. So that is why I said let him come, let’s see his performance. He can use this as a stepping stone and start winning trophies,” he told Brila FM in an interview on Thursday.

Peseiro is expected to be in charge of Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies with Mexico and Ecuador scheduled to take place on May 29 and June 2 respectively in the United States of America.

UCL Final: Real Madrid Are More Relaxed Than Liverpool – Ancelotti

0

Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti believes his team are in a more relaxed mood than Liverpool who are still battling for the Premier League title ahead of the Champions League final.

Recall that Liverpool are still in an intense Premier League title race with Manchester City as they are one point behind Pep Guardiola’s men going into the final week of the campaign.

With the title wrapped up since April, Real Madrid have been able to take things relatively easy of late. Liverpool, meanwhile, will have the Premier League decided on the final day of the season.

“Liverpool have had more difficulties than us, playing important matches.

“We have had more time to think about it, but in the end I don’t think it will affect the teams.

“It’s true that they’re still fighting for the league title,” Ancelotti responded when asked whose position he’d rather be in.

“We’ve had more time to think about this game. But we haven’t thought about it and we won’t until Monday.

“Real Madrid fans are excited about the Champions League final and we want to win the 14th. Nothing else.”

On the game against Betis, Ancelotti didn’t give much away about his XI, leaving his words very much open to interpretation.

“I’m thinking about giving minutes to the players who need them,” Ancelotti explained.

“[David] Alaba is going to train with the rest of the group from Monday onwards.”

Personal life

Ancelotti has two children: a daughter, Katia; and a son, Davide, who was his assistant coach at Everton, and now also at Real Madrid. Davide previously also played in the Milan youth team and joined Borgomanero in June 2008. In 2008, Ancelotti confirmed in an interview that he had broken up with his wife of 25 years, Luisa Gibellini.

He subsequently dated Romanian Marina Crețu. In 2011, it was announced he was dating Canadian businesswoman Mariann Barrena McClay. Ancelotti and Barrena McClay married in Vancouver in July 2014.
