2023: Lawan Fortifies Campaign Consults Jigawa Delegates, Pledges Educational Reforms If Elected

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan was on Saturday in Jigawa to drive further support for his Presidential bid ahead of the upcoming primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lawan arrived at the “New World” alongside his campaign train which included; the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu , Senator Bello Mandiya, his campaign spokesman Iyke Ekeoma and other Senators to consult with the All Progressive’s Congress delegates in the state.

While at Dutse, the capital city of Jigawa State, Lawan and his campaign team paid traditional homage to the Emir of Dutse, Dr Nuhu Muhammadu Sanusi and later met with members of his party, APC, particularly the delegates to seek their support and understanding despite the fact that their Governor, Abubakar Badaru too is in the race.

Addressing the delegates, the Senate President pledged to reform the educational system if given the chance to be next President of Nigeria.

Time is of essence and I promise you that if I get the chance to be the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I will reform the educational system because I know what it means for the public Institution to be functional,” he said.

He told the delegates: “We want to make all Nigerians, especially our youth, our children to be good citizens, to be self-reliant, to be self dependent, to be good citizens that will contribute to national development.

“And until the sons and daughters of nobody get the kind of government support to go through the education system with little or less stress, I’m afraid, the kind of stability that we want, the kind of stability that we need may elude us.

“We are doing so much but I think there are a lot of rooms for improvement. I want to see a situation where private schools, public schools are able to provide a kind of environment for learning and teaching.

“In northern Nigeria, we have close to 15 million out of school children. That is not a good story for us. That is a time bomb for us because in addition to losing such children from being good leaders, some of them, God forbid, may turn into to crime.”

Lawan also spoke of plans to further enhance those areas of the Nigerian economy that are doing well and rejig those that require rejigging.

The economy of Nigeria is an economy that is meant to serve everyone. At the moment, we are doing our best.

“We know what the Federal government did. The Federal government introduced so many empowerment programmes and I am very happy to say that I know Jigawa State has been a beneficiary of such programmes because you have a very efficient system of how to run those empowerment programmes.

“I intend to build on those programmes, refocus some of them. Some of them have achieved optimum success. Some not as much. Some low but our focus will be to enhance those that have achieved optimum success and refocus those that need refocus because at the end of the day, governance is about making people to live a better life, an improved life.”

The Senate President said he was optimistic that the security situation in the country would have improved by the time President Muhammadu Buhari would exit from power in May 2023.

Before Mr President leaves, the security situation would have improved. I’m an optimist. The security situation in Nigeria will improve before Mr President leaves and I, by the Grace of God, if I become your candidate first and then get the winning votes in the general elections, I will continue from where Mr President would have achieved his success.

“We are one people. APC is a platform for all of us. So our ideals, our programmes are the same. And let me commend Governor Badaru for doing so much to complement what President Muhammadu Buhari has been doing at the center.

“I commend my brother, the Governor, for ensuring that the situation is calm here and we are working hard to ensure that other areas are also calm,” Lawan said.

The Senate President told the delegates that he was aware that Governor Badaru too is seeking the same office but assured his audience the issue would be sorted out between them.

The fact that we are here tells a story. That even though our Governor is running for the same thing that I am running for, yet we come here to have this interaction and engagement indicates that we are one.

“It will be my joy to be the candidate of the APC but I will be happy also if my brother gets the ticket and I’m assuring him of my support. So for us in APC, what matters is how we are able to continue to deliver services to the people of Nigeria,” Lawan said.

In his response, the State Deputy Governor, Umar Namadi described Lawan and Badaru as “sons” of President Muhammadu Buhari whom he believed would eventually decide who, between them, would go for the contest.

Governor Abubakar Badaru has asked me to tell you that in Jigawa here, you are at home. As we all know, you and he are five and six. Because you and him are sons of Mr President.

“And I’m sure like you said, you will discuss the matter between yourselves and resolve it. I’m sure whatever His Excellency asks the delegates from Jigawa State to do, they will do it. So you don’t have a problem,” Namadi said.

It will be recalled that Lawan’s yesterday’s visit to Cross River state was reported to be remarkable and colourful.

The Senate President told the congregation of delegates that he had acquired enough experience to lead the country, harping on the need for the country to evolve from an oil-dependent nation to a knowledge-based economy.

According to El-Yakub, referring to the President on the bill, said “he couldn’t have signed it yesterday because he was out of the country and he couldn’t have signed already because he’s just entering the country.

“I also cannot tell you that he will still not sign it or will not sign it. He’s the President. But if it will be signed later, we will all know”, he said.

Cyber Aggression Against Russia, As Well As ‘Sanctions Attack’ In General, Fails – Putin

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out at meeting of the Russian Security Council on Friday that cyber aggression against Russia, as well as the sanctions attack, have failed.

“Already today we can say that cyber aggression against us, as well as in general the sanctions attack on Russia, have failed. On the whole, we were ready for this attack, and this is the result of the systematic work that has been carried out in recent years,” the head of state said.

According to Putin, restrictions on foreign information technologies, programs and products became one of the tools of sanctions pressure on Russia. He emphasized that a number of Western suppliers have unilaterally stopped technical support of their equipment in Russia, also, cases of limiting the work or even blocking programs after their updates became more frequent.

“All this should be taken into account when Russian companies, authorities and administrations use previously installed and introduce new foreign information technologies and products,” the president recommended.

The head of the state pointed out that Russian specialists were seriously engaged in the protection of information infrastructure, ensuring stable operation and networks and communication channels security.

“They managed to do a lot, including the creation of their own unique technologies. The very work in this area received clear management and regulatory contours, adequate to the challenges of the time. For example, strategic planning documents were adopted that identified the main threats and risks in this area and specific steps to neutralize them,” Putin added.

Resist Illegal Tax Collectors, Cross River Agency Boss Charges Traders

0

The Chairman of the Cross River State Anti-tax Agency, Bishop Emmah Isong, has charged petty traders to resist illegal tax collectors who come to harass them for levies.

He gave the charge in Calabar during the second anniversary of the agency which was set up by Governor Ben Ayade to prevent the collection of taxes and levies from low-income earners.

“Once there is a mob action against illegal tax collectors, their activities will stop,” he said, adding that the petty traders were more aware of their rights now through the enlightenment activities of the agency.

He accused local government council chairmen of masterminding illegal taxation in the state.

He said council chairmen “are the chief perpetrators of illegal taxation. Illegal taxation has been institutionalised,” adding that two years after the agency was established, it has reduced illegal taxation by 40%, and vowed that the agency must make sure that illegal taxation was wiped out of Cross River State.

At the event which witnessed a parade by the agency’s brigade, Isong accused politicians of using levy collection points as settlement of the boys (thugs) after elections, adding that “other government agencies have also encroached into our constitutional duty, we face threats.

“We will continue to preach against those who frustrate and milk our state for their selfish gains. This agency is the first of its kind in Cross River State and Africa. Taxation is the oldest form of revenue generation in the world, but most people are hiding under government agencies and public offices to abuse taxation. This is very illegal.

“The tears of Ayade will not be in vain. We are not just a food on the table agency. We are a post-COVID-19 palliative.”

He called for adequate funding for the agency and the recruitment of more workers as most of them were volunteers so that the agency could do more.

The agency was established in 2020 to prevent illegal taxation in order to promote small-scale businesses and entrepreneurship in Cross River state.

Sexual Abuse: Elon Musk To Establish Litigation Unit

0

Tech Mogul, Elon Musk, has announced that he is setting up a “hardcore litigation department” following claims of sexual harassment levelled against him.

Calling for applications via his Twitter account on Friday, Musk stated that he was looking for “hardcore street fighters” who would report directly to him.

“Tesla is building a hardcore litigation department where we directly initiate and execute lawsuits. The team will report directly to me,” he tweeted. “Please send three to five bullet points describing evidence of exceptional ability.”

In the series of tweets, the billionaire highlighted his commitments as regards the department stating, “We will never seek victory in a just case against us, even if we will probably win.

“We will never surrender/settle an unjust case against us, even if we will probably lose.”

Musk’s announcement came after Business Insider published an article on Thursday, alleging that the SpaceX founder sexually harassed a flight attendant in 2016.

The publication read in part, “The attendant worked as a member of the cabin crew on a contract basis for SpaceX’s corporate jet fleet.

“She accused Musk of exposing his erect penis to her, rubbing her leg without consent, and offering to buy her a horse in exchange for an erotic massage, according to interviews and documents obtained by Insider.

“The incident, which took place in 2016, is alleged in a declaration signed by a friend of the attendant, and prepared in support of her claim.

“In November 2018, Musk, SpaceX and the flight attendant entered into a severance agreement granting the attendant a $250,000 payment in exchange for a promise not to sue over the claims,”

Musk had however denied the allegation, tagging the publication a “politically motivated hit piece.”

“And, for the record, those wild accusations are utterly untrue. But I have a challenge to this liar who claims their friend saw me “exposed” – describe just one thing, anything at all (scars, tattoos) that isn’t known by the public. She won’t be able to do so, because it never happened,” he tweeted on Friday.
