2023: House Of Representatives Postpones Resumption To June 7

The House of Representatives on Monday announced that the resumption of plenary has been postponed to June 7.

This is as a result of the ongoing party primaries across Nigeria.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Clerk of the House, Dr Yahaya Danzaria, on Monday in Abuja.

The House adjourned sitting to May 23, to enable members participate in primaries after an emergency sitting on May 11.

The terse statement read: “I’m directed to inform all Honourable Members, staff, media and the general public that due to the ongoing party primaries, the House will resume plenary on Tuesday, June 7, at 11am.”

FCC Arrests 22 Suspected Internet Fraudsters In Asaba (Photos)

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Benin Zonal Command on Sunday May 22, 2022 arrested 22 suspected internet fraudsters.

The suspects: Promise Bassey, Raymond Diamond, Ifeanyi Anyasi, Celestine Osalenlen, Johnbull Kingsley, Ikekhua Mately, Clifford Johnson, Akorah Chinedu, Kester Ogochukwu Idugba Junior and Lucky Egwuatu. Others are Victor Nwabunwanna, Happiness Ayo, Rawlings Nwabunwanna, Eleka Ikeja, Oliseh Emeka, Ozuwa Destiny, Prince Erik Nnamdi, Emmanuel Ochuku Igben, Tochukwu Onyido, Gift Onuajefe and Odosun Matthew, were arrested at their hideout in Asaba, Delta State following actionable intelligence.

Items recovered from them include two Mercedes Benz GLK 350 4Matic and mobile phones.

The suspects have made useful statements and will be arraigned in court soon.

EFCC Re-arraigns Dasuki, Bafarawa, Yuguda, Others Over Alleged N388bn Money Laundering Charges

The Federal Government on Monday re-arraigned former National Security Adviser NSA, Col Sambo Dasuki, former Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa and former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda on corruption charges.

They were re-arraigned at a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory FCT on allegations of breach of trust and criminal misappropriation of public funds amounting to N388 billion.

In the 16-count criminal charges, Dasuki, Bafarawa and Yuguda were alleged to have diverted various sums in various currencies to different bank accounts under the false pretext of using the funds for the procurement of security equipment.

The charges prepared by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC claimed that the funds were, however, used to fund the Presidential campaign of the People’s Democratic Party PDP during the 2015 general elections.

When the charges were read to them, all the accused persons pleaded not guilty.

Following a passionate plea by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, Justice Halilu Yusuf adopted the earlier bail conditions granted them in 2018 when they were first arraigned.

The Judge fixed the trial for June 7, 2022.

Presidential Ambition: Godwin Emefiele Withdraws Suit Against INEC, Malami

Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Monday withdrew the suit he filed against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation over his presidential ambition.

Emefiele, through his counsel, S.T. Maliki, told Justice Ahmed Mohammed that a notice of discontinuance had been filed and served on the defendants in the matter.

The development occurred shortly after the matter was called.

Maliki, who held the brief of Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, said though the matter was scheduled for the mention, they had Emefiele’s instruction to withdraw the suit.

“Pursuant to the instruction of the plaintiff (Emefiele), we filed a notice of discontinuance dated and filed May 16, 2022.

“And the said notice of discontinuance was served on all the defendants on that said date of May 16, 2022, which proof of service is before your lordship,” Maliki said.

The lawyer said of all the defendants, only the 4th and 5th defendants filed a counter-affidavit in response to the plaintiff’s amended originating summons after the notice of withdrawal had been served on them.

He prayed the court to discontinue the suit and make an order striking it out, issues having not been joined by parties in the suits, citing Order 50 of the rules of this court.

Although the lawyer to the 4th defendant, John Aikpokpo-Martins, opposed Emefiele’s intention to withdraw the suit, he urged the court to dismiss the suit at the cost of N1.5 million.

However, counsel for the 2nd and 3rd defendants, Chris Nevo and T. J. Adi, respectively, did not object to the withdrawal notice.

For Nevo, he asked the court to award a N1 million cost against Emefiele.

In his ruling, Justice Mohammed held that Emefiele had the right to file the notice of withdrawal.

He said the notice of discontinuance was valid and accordingly struck out.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) had, on May 9, reported that Emefiele, through his lawyer, Ozekhome, had approached the court.

He had approached the court with an ex-parte motion, seeking the court’s interpretation as to whether he could run for the 2023 presidential primary while he holds office as governor of CBN.

FG Shortlists 8,000 Nigerians For Overseas Scholarships

The Federal Government has shortlisted about 8,800 applicants from among 26,000 that applied for its overseas scholarship programme.

The Manager, Overseas Scholarship Scheme at Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Bello Mustapha, stated this on Monday during the commencement of the interviews for the applicant at the Abuja centre.

The annual PTDF scholarship has been ongoing since 2000 with sponsorships in masters and Ph.Ds.

He said, “Specifically, we have shortlisted about 8,800 for everything from 26,000 people; we’re using here and we are using the other centres.”

Mustapha said while the interview in Abuja will last for three weeks, Bauchi will be one week due to fewer applicants while Kaduna, Lagos, Port Harcourt centres will hold for two weeks to cover the entire six geopolitical zones.

On the expected number of persons to be selected to begin the 2022/2023 session in September, he said, “I think last year, we took three for MSC and two for PhD, so I don’t know this year we would have to look at our budget before I think we come up with the final selection.”

He, however, said there is a concession for the oil-producing states.

The selected candidates will be trained in the UK where PTDF has a pact with 18 universities; Germany, Malaysia, France and China.

Mustapha said none will be sent to China this session. “Now we have some in China even though we are not using China this year because of the global pandemic issue.”

The PTDF official said those that have been trained in the past have contributed to the Nigerian economy.

“We have been sponsoring people over the years and some of them have come back to Nigeria and they are contributing to the Nigerian economy. Some of them are in Shell, some of them in NNPC. We have a lot of scholars; they have proved themselves,” noted Mustapha.

The CBN governor made the prayers in an ex-parte motion dated and filed on May 9 by his lawyer, seeking an order of maintenance of status quo ante Bellum pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

Emefiele, in the suit, sued the INEC and the AGF as 1st and 2nd defendants respectively.

But Justice Mohammed, on May 12, also joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and two other lawyers, for themselves and on behalf of members of Save Nigeria, Our Fatherland, as 3rd, 4th and 5th defendants respectively.

He stated this at APC CNI meeting which took place in Umuahia, Abia State capital.

The Founder Ife Mere Mma 2023, CEO AGU NZUBE FOUNDATION insisted that APC will not allow mistakes of 2019 repeat itself, adding that it will form government in Abia in the forthcoming election.

According to him, the APC has all it takes to win the governorship of Abia, adding “ I am 100% sure that APC will win the election in 2023”.

He accused the PDP of attempting to take over governance by plotting insecirty just to create tension and pressure especially in Imo landing.

According to him, APC has not given any one the flag to bear yet. Also, he said APC won’t give the flag to people who are not ready to make impact. He reiterated that what happened in 2019 election won’t happen again. Hence, APC is taking over in 2023 especially in Abia state.

Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, has been identified as the only presidential aspirant that would be totally committed to the peace, unity and implementation of policies and programs of President Muhamadu Buhari, if given the mandate to succeed him.

This was part of the resolutions of a sociopolitical group; Abia North Peace Foundation, ANPF, after its strategic meeting in Abuja.

According to a statement signed by Hon. Gabriel Ukairo, Deputy Director General of the group and made available to newsmen in Umuahia.

According to the statement, after thorough deliberations and nationwide consultations with stakeholders from other groups, on the way forward for Nigeria as President Buhari prepares to exit in 2023, the group came to the conclusion that, Senator Lawan remains the only aspirant among the lot, that will continue and improve upon the programs and legacies of President Muhamadu Buhari.

The statement stated further that, “Having listened to the Senate President and the fact that he has stated that he is contesting to be the president of all Nigerians, we are convinced that he is capable of uniting the country for growth and economic development.

“We are more than convinced that Lawan is the only one who fits into the succession agenda of Mr President and should be encouraged to throw in his hat in the ring.

3 Policemen Gunned Down In Niger By Kidnappers

The Anambra State Police command said Monday that it had identified some of the criminals terrorizing the state, stressing that there was nothing unknown about the gunmen as people tag them.

Addressing reporters in Awka, the state Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng said the command would go all out to deal with them, even as he frowned at the reluctance by indigenes of various communities in the state to volunteer information about the activities of criminals in their areas to help tackle the problem.

The CP said: “There is nothing unknown about the gunmen terrorizing Anambra State, to warrant calling then ‘unknown gunmen’.

“We have been saying that unknown gunmen is not the right name for these criminals. We are trying to mystify something that is not just there.

“It is time we go into demystifying them. These people are not spirits, they live with us, they are our nephews, our cousins, our brothers, and they live in communities. We know who they are.

“The problem of security is that of total silence as nobody sees something, nobody hears something and nobody says something.

“Security is collective and everyone has a part to play. Crimes are localized, and they happen in our communities. We should be able to come up with information of what is happening in our communities, not glorifying them and tagging them unknown gunmen, otherwise we will end up not making headways. We know them, we have actually arrested some of them and they are human beings.

“I want us to also shift the narrative that these criminals are Fulani. We have arrested some and taken out some during gun duels.

“So, when the communities that should help to contribute to security decide to stay quiet, that is not a good sign.

“Last week a person I didn’t know told me that a team of gunmen were operating at Umunze in a Hummer Jeep, I sent a team after them, and we were told they have moved to Umuchu and we pursued them and were able to take out four of them.

“You can see what information can do. That is how powerful information is, and we expect people to give information,” Echeng said.

Manchester City secured a dramatic comeback win against Aston Villa to beat rivals Liverpool to this season’s Premier League title.

Heading into the final day of the season, Liverpool needed to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers and hope Man City fail to beat Aston Villa managed by former Reds skipper Steven Gerrard.

Recall it was a slip by Gerrard against Chelsea in 2014 that contributed to Man City pipping Liverpool to the title.

But at the end of the dramatic final day, with less than 20 minutes left, Gerrard could not right the wrong of eight years ago, as Villa could not hold on with Man City coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and retain the league title.

Liverpool also had to come from a goal down to beat Wolves 3-1 but it was not enough for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Man City, who have now won eight league titles, ended the season on 93 points after 38 games just one point ahead of Liverpool.

The Reds can still end the campaign on a high as they will face Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League next Saturday.

They have already secured the League Cup and FA Cup titles, beating Chelsea on penalties in both finals.

Villa took the lead on 37 minutes after Lucas Digne played an inviting cross into the box and Matthew Cash confidently headed it beyond Ederson.

City went in search of the equalizer but found themselves 2-0 down on 69 minutes following a superb strike by former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian latched onto a second ball, cut inside and then pulled the ball coolly into the near corner.

With 14 minutes left City pulled a goal back thanks to Ilkay Gundogan who from close range headed in Raheem Sterling’s pass.

Just two minutes later City equalized. Oleksandr Zinchenko pulled the ball back to Rodri at the edge of the box and the midfielder produced an ice-cool finish into the bottom corner.

And with nine minutes remaining City completed the comeback, as Gundogan tapped in what proved to be the title clinching goal.

At the Emirates Arsenal thrashed Everton 5-1 but it was too little too late, as they were pipped to the last Champions League place by North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

A win for Arsenal against Everton while a defeat for Spurs at already relegated Norwich, would have seen them qualify for a first Champions League since 2017.

But Spurs hammered Norwich 5-0 at Carrow Road to beat their bitter rivals and claim fourth place while Arsenal finished fifth.

And in the relegation fight, Leeds stayed up after beating Brentford 2-1 away while Burnley dropped down no thanks to a 2-1 home loss to Newcastle United.
