Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are currently frozen, the Kremlin said Friday, as it accused Kyiv of making “contradictory” statements that Moscow does not understand.

“The negotiations are frozen by the decision of the Ukrainian side,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a regular conference call.

“In general, the leadership of Ukraine constantly makes statements that contradict each other. This does not allow us to fully understand what the Ukrainian side wants,” Peskov added.

On Thursday, Peskov said Moscow expects Kyiv to accept the status quo and meet its territorial demands, following remarks by former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger that appeared to suggest Ukraine has to agree to give up Crimea and much of the Donbas region to Russia.

In an interview last week with Reuters, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak ruled out agreeing to a ceasefire with Russia and said Kyiv would not accept any deal with Moscow that involved ceding territory.

Peseiro Speaks After First Super Eagles Training, Reveals AFCON Ambition

Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro thumbed up his players for their exemplary conduct in training ahead of the friendlies against Mexico and Ecuador.

The Portuguese took charge of his first training session with the team on Thursday night.

Peseiro was particularly delighted with the spirit of camaraderie in the team.

“It’s a pleasure for me to start work with the national team. The training was good. We want to win the next AFCON and this is the first step towards achieving that,” Peseiro told the Super Eagles media team.

“The boys were tired because of the long trip, but they showed great enthusiasm and motivation. They trained with happiness.

“This is the first step to reach the next AFCON. We want to win even though it is in 2023. It is important that we start to improve our spirit.”

Peseiro’s charges will take on the El Tri of Mexico in their first friendly at the AT&T Stadium, Arlington on Saturday.

They will also face Ecuador at the Red Bull Arena, Harrison on Thursday, June 2.

The West Africans are using both games to prepare for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone and Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau.

Calvin Bassey Set To Join Aston Villa

Rangers defender Calvin Bassey is eyeing a reunion with his former boss Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa.

Bassey was signed from Leicester City by Gerrard during the latter’s reign as Rangers manager.

The Nigerian international has been linked with a move to Aston Villa following his impressive displays for Rangers in the 2021/22 season.

The 22-year-old received huge plaudits for his superb performance in the Rangers’ UEFA Europa League final defeat to Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt.

Sky Sports says Bassey would be “open to talking to Villa”. “I’m sure he would be reluctant to sign a new contract and see what is out there for him, to be honest.

“There will be clubs out there for him, 1000 percent. He’s quick, calm on the ball, strong, and good in the air.

“I’m surprised that Leicester let him go, to be honest. That’s very strange.”

Bassey is under contract at Rangers until 2024.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin was making “slow” but “palpable” progress in the Donbas and urged more military support for Ukraine, such as the provision of Multiple Launch Rocket Systems.

“I think it’s very, very important that we do not get lulled because of the incredible heroism of the Ukrainians in pushing the Russians back from the gates of Kyiv,” Johnson said in an interview with Bloomberg.

“I’m afraid that Putin at great cost to himself and to (the) Russian military is continuing to chew through ground in Donbas, he’s continuing to make gradual, slow but I’m afraid palpable progress,” he added.

Johnson stressed that therefore “it is absolutely vital” to continue to support the Ukrainians militarily.

“What they need now is the type of rocketry, a Multiple Launch Rocket System, MLRs, that will enable them to defend themselves against this very brutal Russian artillery, and that’s where the world needs to go now,” he added.

William Troost-Ekong has expressed confidence that the Super Eagles will rise again after the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Troost-Ekong is one of 19 Eagles players currently in Dallas, USA, ahead of friendly games against Mexico and Ecuador on May 28 and June 2 respectively.

Recall the Eagles lost the 2022 World Cup ticket to bitter rivals Black Stars of Ghana in March.

And speaking in an interview published on the NFF TV from Dallas ahead of the friendly games, Troost-Ekong expressed the belief that the team will be back.

He spoke about meeting the new head coach Jose Peseiro, the new coaching crew, and the first training session under the new handler.

Also, he thanked Nigerian fans for always supporting the Eagles and encouraged them not to relent.

“We all arrive from a long journey here in Dallas it was amazing to meet the coach and the new coaching crew. 

“Training was good it is great to see there are lots of home-based players here as well who have the chance to show themselves. Everyone is in good spirit and we are waiting for one or two more late arrivals and we are preparing well for the game against Mexico.

“It has been a tough few months for all of us, it’s a big heartache we have to keep on moving. When you fall down you have to stand up again, this team has been down before and came back and I believe we will do it again. 

“So it’s great to be up for these friendly games and a chance to play in the AFCON qualifiers in the next few weeks, that would be a great chance for us to refresh and refocus ourselves and the focus would be on the next AFCON.

“Lastly, I have to say a big thank you to the fans, I will ask them and encourage them to stay behind the team we all know how much it means for us. We really appreciate your support so please stay behind the team.”

After the friendly games, the Eagles will kick off qualification for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone on June 9.

Watford Releases Etebo After Loan Spell

Watford has confirmed that Nigerian midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo has returned to his parent club Stoke City following the completion of his loan stint at the club.

Etebo moved to the Vicarage Road on a season-long loan deal last summer, with the option to join the Hornets on a permanent deal.

The 26-year-old was however hampered by a long-term injury that limited his appearance for the club.

Etebo made just 10 league appearances for the London club in the 2021/22 season.

Etebo is among the five players released by Watford, who will campaign in the Sky Bet Championship next season following their relegation from the Premier League.

“Following the conclusion of the 2021/22 Premier League season, Watford FC can confirm that five first-team players have left the club,” reads a statement on the club’s official website.

“Goalkeeper Ben Foster has been released at the end of his contract, bringing the curtain down on a storied Hornets career which saw the 39-year-old feature for the club over 200 times during two seasons on loan between 2005 and 2007 and after re-signing permanently from West Bromwich Albion in 2018.
