Benzema Deserves To Win Ballon d’Or - Messi

Lionel Messi believes Benzema deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this year after helping to guide his team, Real Madrid to the Champions League title.

Benzema scored 44 goals and recorded 13 assists in all competitions as Real Madrid won a LaLiga-Champions League double.

The forward was the top scorer in both competitions.

”There are no doubts; it’s very clear that Benzema had a spectacular year and ended up victorious in the Champions League,” Messi said on Argentine television.

“He was fundamental in all the matches from the round of 16 onwards. I think there is no doubt this year.”

Real Madrid’s 1-0 win over Liverpool gave them their 14th European Cup triumph — twice as many as the next most successful team, AC Milan.

Benzema’s hat trick in the second leg eliminated PSG 3-2 on aggregate in the last 16, yet again preventing the French club from winning Europe’s elite club competition for the first time.

“The Real Madrid game killed us, me, and everyone in the dressing room. We had a lot of hope. It makes me want to win again,” Messi added.

“But the best team doesn’t always win the Champions League. I don’t take credit away from Real Madrid; they weren’t the best in this competition and yet they beat everyone.”

The Ballon d’Or award for the best football player in the world will be presented on Oct. 17, with the nominees set to be revealed on Aug. 12.

The trophy will now be awarded on the basis of a regular-season from August to July rather than a calendar year.

Latvian Prime Minister Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš has welcomed the latest round of sanctions against Moscow, saying the “stronger the sanctions, the quicker the war will end.”

“All member states are determined to move away from Russian energy dependency,” he said upon arrival to a special meeting of the European Council in Brussels on Tuesday.

“Over the past 20, 30 years, nations have built infrastructure, which has been greatly reliant upon Russian energy sources, and we’re moving very rapidly away from that. For some member states it’s easier, for other member states it is actually physically more difficult because of the lack of ports, lack of infrastructure, but everyone is moving in the same direction,” Kariņš said.

Oyedokun made this known while featuring on a live radio phone-in political programme in Osogbo on Monday.

According to him, “We the elders are already working round the clock in our quest at ending the crisis affecting our party in Osun State.

“Even at that, no one would blame the Omooba Dotun Babayemi group for legitimately insisting on their rights. They have truly shown that they are no fools that could be ridden roughshod. لعب بوكر

Adeleke Campaign Organization Mocks Osun APC Over Inconclusive Primary Elections

The Governorship Campaign Organisation of the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as a den of people specializing in truncating the will of the people.

The organization also slammed the APC over its inability to conclude the legislative primaries of the party which were held on Friday, May 27, 2022.

In a statement signed by Mallam Olawale Rasheed, on behalf of the organization and obtained by DAILY POST on Monday, the organization berated the APC and Governor Gboyega Oyetola for demonstrating incompetency in public governance and in party administration.

The organization also noted that the failure of APC-led administration in the State had now extended to a lack of capacity to transparently organize free and fair primaries and congresses.

In the statement, the Adeleke campaign organization which offered to help the Osun APC to organize a credible primary held that it was hard to imagine that several days after the party held its legislative primaries, the outcomes were still a source of controversy.

“It is hard to imagine that nearly a week after primaries were supposedly held by the APC for various elective offices across Osun State, the outcomes are still a source of controversies. If APC needs help, we are ready to help them organize a credible primary.

“This shameful and undemocratic approach has left many confused as aspirants and their supporters took turns to declare themselves winners. It is the height of irresponsibility and this goes to show that the APC can no longer be trusted with the management of the State.

“Whereas the PDP conducted credible, fair, and free primaries and candidates for available positions are known to all, the APC put up a charade that not only makes a mockery of democracy but also explains why it has done a very bad job in managing Osun state over the years.

“If the APC cannot conduct transparent primaries, it will not be hard to understand why its management of public resources is marred by confusion. If the APC cannot be sincere with its membership by ensuring that the wishes of the majority prevail, it is clear why lies and deceits are the tools of governance in the past twelve years,” the party said.

While calling on citizens of the State to view the failure of the APC to conduct credible primaries as a gauge of its failings, the campaign organization noted that it will be entirely hopeless to expect a party that could not manage its affairs to do anything better for Osun as a whole.

DAILY POST reported that the Osun APC State and National Assembly primary elections have been marred with protests and allegations of imposition by members.

Though the election was held on Friday, the results have not been released.

Many aspirants also have taken to social media to announce their victory in the polls

We Never Said Igbo Will Rise Up Against Atiku, Says Ohanaeze Ndigbo
Atiku Abubakar

The apex socio-political organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has dismissed reports that it will work against the election of Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Recall that Atiku Abubakar was, on Saturday, elected to represent the PDP in the 2023 presidential election.

His emergence as the standard-bearer of the PDP goes against the demand of south-easterners that political parties field candidates from the zone.

On Sunday, reports credited to Ohanaeze claimed that the south-east will work against Atiku’s candidacy and his campaigns will be rejected in the geo-political zone.

Reacting to the development in a statement on Monday, Chiedozie Ogbonnia, Ohanaeze spokesperson, said the report was issued by mischief makers seeking to cause confusion in the southeast.

“The attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to a reckless publication currently circulating in the media indicating that Ohanaeze Ndigbo blasts Atiku and vows to work against his PDP candidacy in the 2023 polls; and that Atiku Abubakar, will never become Nigeria’s president”, the statement reads.

The press release added that “the Igbo would rise up against Atiku, adding that his presidential campaign would be rejected in the South-East.

“Ordinarily, Ohanaeze Ndigbo would have ignored the said press release, but silence in this circumstance will tend to give validity to such fallacy by the unsuspecting public.

“It is therefore imperative to inform that those behind the fake press release are mischief-makers, impostors, charlatans and unscrupulous social climbers who have shamelessly leeched on the invaluable footprints of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to issue press releases for narrow, perverse and illicit pecuniary interests. It is the unwholesome activities of such maladjusted, impish scaremongers that have been the bane of Igbo cohesion.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural body, led by Ambassador Professor George Obiozor has not issued any press statement on the candidacy of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.”

Ogbonnia added that Ohanaeze awaits the “full outcome of the ongoing primaries by all the political parties” before it can issue a press release about the Igbo position on the 2023 general election.

UK Offers Work Visas To Graduates From World’s Best Universities

The United Kingdom will grant work visas to graduates from the world’s best universities in an expansion of its post-Brexit immigration system that is designed to attract the “best and brightest” workers.

According to EuroNews, upon exit from the European Union, Britain has ended the priority given to EU citizens and had since introduced a points-based immigration system that ranks applicants on qualifications and language skills to the type of job offered to them.

But the country has faced a tight labour market for several years compounded by Brexit and COVID-19 and companies in manufacturing, logistics, and the food sector which has urged the government to loosen the rules for entry-level jobs.

Under the new scheme announced on Monday, graduates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree from the top 50 universities abroad can apply for a two-year work visa and will be allowed to bring family members with them.

Those who receive doctorates can apply for a three-year visa. Successful applicants will then be able to switch to longer-term employment visas, the government said.

Britain’s finance minister, Rishi Sunak, said this would enable Britain to grow as an international hub for innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

“We want the businesses of tomorrow to be built here today – which is why I call on students to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to forge their careers here,” Sunak said.

Under the new scheme, applicants must have been awarded degrees no more than five years before the date of application.

Eligible universities must appear in the top 50 rankings of at least two of the following: the Times Higher Education world university rankings, the Academic Ranking of World Universities, and the Quacquarelli Symonds world university rankings.

The most recent list of eligible universities from 2021, published online by the UK government, comprises more than two dozen U.S. universities, as well as institutions in Canada, Japan, Germany, China, Singapore, France, and Sweden.

The government said candidates must pass a security and criminality check, and be able to speak, read, listen and write English to an intermediate level.

Alex Otti Withdraws From Abia Governorship Race, May Dump APC
Dr Alex Otti

Chief Alex Otti, a Labour Party governorship aspirant in Abia State, has congratulated his party compatriot the former governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, on his emergence as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the just concluded presidential primary held in Asaba, Delta State.

Otti, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, on Tuesday, explained that the excitement, support and solidarity which Obi’s presidential ambition had across political, ethnic and religious lines were a clear manifestation that honest Nigerians of all classes cherished excellence when and where they saw it.

He stated, “Obi, is a national asset, a beacon of hope, and a colossus of high proportion whose administrative skills, managerial acumen and honourable disposition in leadership have contributed immensely in resetting and reshaping the hitherto pervasive mindset of mediocrity and profligacy in public service.”

The ex-bank chief expressed joy that his June 8, 2020 article published in his Backpage column in a national newspaper captioned “The Triumph of Profligacy Over Prudence” dedicated to Obi, which x-rayed Obi’s leadership excellence and accomplishments anchored on cost-cutting, was being made manifest today as many Nigerians had begun to see the genius in the man he had known for years.

Otti further explained that the mere fact that another accomplished and iconic Nigerian, Prof. Pat Utomi, found Obi worthy enough of being stepped down for in the presidential primary, spoke eloquently about how highly placed and revered Obi was in the Nigeria of today.

He also used the opportunity to salute the internationally respected intellectual, Prof. Utomi, who was the sponsor of his wedding close to 30 years ago, for his sacrifice for good governance in the country.

The governorship hopeful thanked Labour Party leaders and members for finding Obi worthy of flying its flag and prayed that God would give Obi the strength and wisdom to pursue his presidential contest smoothly and emerge victorious.

I Didn’t Sue FG For N1bn Over Home Invasion Says Rochas Okorocha

I Didn’t Sue FG For N1bn Over Home Invasion Says Rochas Okorocha
Senator Rochas Okorocha

A former governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha, on Tuesday described as false the report that he had sued the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and demanded N1bn damages over the invasion of his home in Abuja by the operatives of Economic and Finance Crimes Commission last week.

The ex-governor also denied the claim that he had briefed five Senior Advocates of Nigeria to commence legal action against the Federal Government.

Okorocha in a statement issued in Owerri by his spokesperson, Sam Omwuemeodo, said that he had no reason to sue the AGF because his office was not the one who invaded his home nor took him to court.

The statement said that Okorocha and his lawyers were more concerned about ensuring that the ex-governor, who currently represents Imo West in the Senate, regains his freedom as soon as possible.

Omwuemeodo said that Okorocha knew those to sue for damages when he comes out from the EFFC net if he decides to press charges.

Part of the statement read, “We were concerned with the expected hearing of the bail application today when our attention was drawn to the online stories of N1b suit and engagement of five SANS.

“Okorocha has no reason to take either the Attorney General of the Federation or the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, to court and claim N1b damages, over the invasion of his house, since the incident had nothing to do with AGF or his office.

“if Okorocha comes out of detention and along the line and decides to take legal action to press for damages over the invasion of his residence, he knows those who carried out the action. We do not think he would include the AGF or his office.

“We know that some patriotic human rights lawyers in the country and some of them, highly respected SANs, have been of immense help in dealing with human rights violations in the country, most of the time on their own, to help the society.

“We are, therefore, having the feeling that the renowned Senior Advocates mentioned in the online stories, might have been challenged by the invasion of Okorocha’s private residence by agents of the EFCC and might have also decided to take the bull by the horns.

“We thank them. If Okorocha comes out of detention and decides to walk in that direction, fine. But one fact would be made clear and that is, that the AGF and the office of AGF would not be parts of the action, because they had nothing to do with the invasion of Okorocha’s private residence.

“We have done this to keep the record straight. We are looking forward to seeing Okorocha out of detention by the grace of God and the magnanimity of His Lordship, handling the case.”

NAFDAC Nabs Businessman For Alleged Importation Of Fake Drug

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has arrested one Obinna Igbo, for allegedly importing a fake malaria drug, Amanta Forte.

The arrest of the suspect, a 32-year-old businessman was made known in a statement signed by the agency’s resident media consultant, Mr. Olusayo Akintola, on Monday.

Akintola said that the suspect, who imported the unregistered product, had also been arraigned before Justice Tijani Ringim of a Federal High Court in Lagos on a four-count charge.

The charges are unlawful importation, possession, sale, and distribution of fake Amanta Forte soft gel (Artemether 80mg + Lumefantrine 480mg Capsules) drug at Head bridge market Onitsha, Anambra State.

It was revealed that the accused person sold the fake drugs at Shop E200, Freedom Line, and Onitsha Head Bridge Market after importing the same into the country.

The statement reported the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, as saying that the suspect was arrested by officials of the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate of the agency.

She said that the officials had raided three pharmaceutical outlets at BridgeHead market in Onitsha; namely Triphon Point Global limited, Emma Medicals Nigeria Limited, and Ekeh Mountain Global Ventures Limited.

The DG stated that the offending product was found in Triphon Point Global limited, and the product was subsequently evacuated and the shop was placed on hold.

She explained further that at Emma Medicals and Ekeh Mountain Global Ventures Limited, the shops were visited, and thorough screening was conducted as well.

She, however, said that the offending product was not displayed on the shelves of these shops, but their sales books revealed that they all sold the unregistered product.

According to her, the three shops were placed on hold and their managing directors were invited for further interrogation they claimed that the product was sourced from one Blessed OJ Don Global Link in the market.

The DG said that the three suspects further stated that if they were given the opportunity, they would assist the agency in apprehending Mr. Obinna Igbo, the Managing Director of Blessed OJ Don Global Link.

According to her, all efforts to arrest Igbo proved abortive as he was on the run, knowing that he was being trailed by NAFDAC, but was later caught in Onisha with the use of tracking devices.

“Upon interrogation, Igbo acknowledged without duress that he was the importer of Amanta Forte Soft Gel, an illegal antimalarial drug he smuggled into Nigeria from Ghana.

“The date markings on the products indicated that the product was manufactured in India and marketed by Mitzaagold International FZE Amin Hussain market, AL Trade Zone, Dubai, UAE.

“The suspect said he has other pharmaceutical products which he also imported into the country, some of which are anti-hypertensive drugs,” Adeyeye disclosed.

She said that the suspect also acknowledged that he sold the product to the shops visited during the raid by NAFDAC, and had pleaded not guilty before the Judge, which his counsel, A.C Oforjiuba made an oral application for his bail.

Adeyeye said that the prosecuting counsel, Mrs. Chinyere Okoli, however, prayed the court to remand him in custody pending trial.

Adeyeye said that the Judge later adjourned the case until June 6 for trial.

According to her, the offences contravened the provisions of Section 1(a) of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act of 2004.

She said the offences also contravened the provisions of Sections 1(1) of the Food, Drugs and Related Products Registration Act of 2004.

APC Primary: I Was Almost Killed, Exercise Inconclusive – Ondo Speaker

Bamidele Oleyelogun, the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, says his call for the cancellation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, primary election almost cost him his life.

Oloyelogun is the aspirant for Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency.

He said that last Friday’s primary election was fraught with irregularities and fraud, adding that he was almost killed during the exercise as hundreds of armed thugs threatened to deal with over his position.

Oleyelogun disclosed that the primary was inconclusive, hence the need for a rerun.

Violence had rocked the primary held in Igara-Oke following a fracas between the Speaker’s agent, Festus, and the agent of one of the contenders, Tajudeen Adefisoye, who is the incumbent lawmaker representing the constituency in the National Assembly.

The Speaker, who said he was targeted by a gang, claimed his opponent, Adefisoye, disrupted the primary with armed thugs and security personnel.

Oleyelogun insisted that the returning officer who ruled the primary inconclusive did not announce any results, despite what he called “false results” that were circulated on social media.

“The primary was a sham and should be canceled outrightly. Every power belongs to God, no one can get anything without God. But you can’t rob me. The molestation was just too much.

“The primary is inconclusive up till now. My opponent at the primary, Tajudeen Adefisoye, brought in lots of armed men both military and paramilitary in about 11 buses, and 18-seater buses. In another three vehicles, some men who were in suits with pistols occupied them.

“I have reported to the party. I called the Chairman of the party in the State, but he has refused to pick up my calls. I called about 19 times yesterday and he never returned my calls. I suspect a foul play from the party secretariat and the Chairman because he is from the same local government and town as my opponent, Adefisoye,” the Speaker said.
