European Council President Charles Michel

The sixth package of EU sanctions against Russia, which comprises an embargo on tanker deliveries of Russian oil to EU member-states postponed for six months, can be finally approved on June 1-2, President of the European Council Charles Michel said on Tuesday.

“I can confirm that the legal text [of the EU Council Regulation on sanctions – TASS] is already being edited. This is a matter of hours. We expect the legal text will be approved tomorrow night or the day after tomorrow,” Michel said.

The EU summit agreed after debates lasting for nearly a month the sixth package of sanctions against Russia. Further to the partial deferred embargo on Russian oil, it is expected to comprise the black list expansion, disconnection of Sberbank and two more Russian banks from SWIFT and the ban on broadcasting of three Russian TV channels in the EU.

Europe’s “Strength And Determination” Suffered During “Wrangling” Over New Sanctions On Russia – Robert Habeck

0
Berlin: Robert Habeck, Federal Minister of Economics.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said Tuesday that Europe’s “strength and determination has certainly suffered” during the “wrangling” between the European Union member states over the new sanctions against Russia agreed by the bloc on Monday.

“It’s a compromise, and perhaps we live in a time when too many compromises not only cloud but destroy clarity in the end. I’m certainly not happy about that,“ Habeck said during a news conference in Berlin.

Habeck accused Hungarian leader Viktor Orban of “ruthlessly” persevering his “own interests” during the negotiations of the sixth package of EU sanctions against Moscow.

The minister said there was a confusion between a short-term perspective of one’s own country and a long-term observing of principles which could only be embraced globally.

“I am irritated, and this is the polite way of putting it — how Viktor Orban can intervene so deeply that you ruthlessly just play poker for your own interests,“ Habeck said.

The big goal of this time for Europe is to achieve unity as an economic region, the minister stressed.

“Europe has to reinvent itself,” he said.

Abubakar Atiku

A constitutional lawyer, Mr. Johnmary Jideobi, on Tuesday, approached the Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge the eligibility of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, to contest the 2023 presidential election.

The plaintiff, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/751/2022, maintained that Atiku, who is the flag-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is not constitutionally qualified to participate in the presidential contest.

Consequently, he posed two legal questions for the court to determine, after which he sought for seven principal reliefs against Atiku, PDP, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, who were cited as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd defendants in the matter.

The Attorney-General of the Federation was also joined as the 4th defendant.

Specifically, the plaintiff, asked the court to determine; “Whether by the combined provisions of sections 1(1) & (2), 25 and 131(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), only a Nigeria citizen by birth can contest for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?”.

As well as, “Whether by the combined interpretation of sections 1(1) & (2), 25(1) & (2) and 131(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and giving the circumstances surrounding the birth of the 1st Defendant, he can be cleared by the 2nd and 3rd Defendants to contest for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?”.

Taiwan announced Tuesday it will donate $6 million to five Ukrainian cities affected by Russia’s invasion – including Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city – as a token of support and to help rebuild schools and civilian infrastructure, according to a statement from its foreign ministry.

In a phone call with Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said Taipei will donate $2 million to Kharkiv and an additional $500,000 each to Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia.

“The people of Taiwan empathizes and stands with the people of Ukraine, as we have long faced the threats from China,” Wu said to Terekhov. “We hope our help in rebuilding severely destructed civilian infrastructure can alleviate impact brought on to the Ukrainian people by the war.”

According to the statement, Terekhov expressed his gratitude and said he looks forward to inviting Wu to Kharkiv after the war.

The phone call with Kharkiv’s mayor follows a call with Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko in April, where Taipei announced a donation of $8.8 million to Ukraine.

Taiwan does not have official diplomatic relations with Ukraine.

Last Friday, Taiwan’s foreign ministry said it had finished transporting 582 tons of aid and supplies to the Ukrainian people.

Russia at the moment is making preparations for a second Russia-Africa summit. The dates will be determined in cooperation with the African Union, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said at a meeting with the Speaker of Mozambique’s Assembly (parliament) Esperanca Bias.

A delegation of the Federation Council headed by Matviyenko is on an official visit to Mozambique from May 30 to June 1.

“We are already preparing the next summit. Its dates will be determined jointly with the African Union,” Matviyenko said.

She added that Russia saw Mozambique as a “reliable and time-tested” partner in Africa.

“Russia has always provided assistance to Mozambique and it keeps doing so. We are pleased to see your success in economic and social development. We note with satisfaction the steady development of the political dialogue,” Matviyenko added.

Bias thanked Matviyenko for visiting Mozambique. She described the Federation Council delegation’s visit as a sign “Russia is always with Mozambique and Mozambique is always with Russia.”

“Our relationship dates back to the period when Mozambique was fighting for independence. Even after we gained independence, Russia has always been by our side. These relations are obvious in different areas,” Bias stressed.

The first Russia-Africa summit was held in Sochi on October 23-24, 2019. It was co-chaired by the presidents of Russia and Egypt, Vladimir Putin and Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. The second summit is scheduled for the autumn of 2022.

Adeleke Campaign Organization Mocks Osun APC Over Inconclusive Primary Elections

A Senate aspirant in the just concluded All Progressives Congress Senatorial primary in Kogi Central, Ramatu Shehu, has rejected the result of the exercise in which the former Kogi State Commissioner for Works, Abubakar Ohere, emerged the winner.

She described the process as ‘kangaroo’ and in flagrant disregard for Electoral Law because a political appointee, Yahaya Karaku, was the returning officer, which was against the Electoral Act making it unlawful and unconstitutional.

Yusuf Adeko, who addressed journalists on behalf of Shehu in Lokoja on Tuesday, said the election could not stand and urged the APC to be prepared to conduct a new primary.

She described the activities of the Congress as “a selection and not an election”, adding that what “happened at the venue of the primary election was what was obtained in the animal farm”.

“No accreditation was held. She was never allowed to meet with the delegates, while the retuning officer, Alhaji Yahaya Karaku, a political actor from the district, did not allow a level playing field by not allowing grey areas to be addressed before proceeding with the Kangaroo election,” Adeko stated.

She called on her teeming supporters to remain calm despite the obvious manipulation, asked for a level playing field and to allow the people to choose their preferred candidate.

Shehu estimated that no primary election was held in Kogi Central, adding that the results published on social media and other news outlets were fictitious and laughable with imaginary votes allocated.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has explained why the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr Samuel Uche Kanu, the Methodist Bishop of Owerri, Rt Rev Okechukwu Michael and the Prelate’s Chaplain were released within 24 hours after their kidnap by unknown gunmen suspected to be herdsmen along the Lokpa axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

Ikpeazu attributed their quick release to “the grace of God, the fervent prayers of the Christian community and the well coordinated response from security agencies in Abia State.”

Governor Ikpeazu who said he had spoken with the Prelate, disclosed that he is in high spirits.

The Governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Onyebuchi Ememanka, expressed gratitude to God for the release of the abducted clerics.

The Methodist Church Prelate who hails from Ihube in Imo State, was kidnapped on Sunday around the Nkwoagu – Leru axis in Umunneochi LGA, off the Enugu – Port Harcourt Expressway.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu assures that security will be stepped up around the Isuikwuato – Umunneochi axis of the State where there has, in the recent past, been a spike in the activities of criminals.

On why the area including Uturu-Okigwe corridor is a hot bed, the Governor explained that “the location of the area around the state’s borders with four states of Imo, Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi makes it attractive to criminals who easily enter the State and also escape through any of these routes.”

He called for inter-state collaboration with the neighbouring states in securing those areas to rid them of criminal elements.

Gov. Ikpeazu assures that security would be stepped up around the Isuikwuato – Umunneochi axis of the state where there has, in the recent past, been a spike in the activities of criminals.

In the statement, Onanuga said, “He (Tinubu) confidently told the panel why he is qualified to fly the flag of APC as its presidential candidate.
