Gov Makinde Drops Deputy, Picks Bayo Lawal As Running Mate

Ahead of the 2023 governorship election, Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has dropped his deputy, Engineer Rauf Olaniyan, as his running mate.

Instead, he picked the chairman of the State Housing Corporation, Barrister Bayo Lawal, as his running mate for the 2023 governorship election.

It was gathered that Lawal’s choice was preferred ahead of two others who were widely rumoured as possible replacements for Olaniyan.

The Kishi-born Lawal, who hails from the Irepo local government area of the State, is a former Attorney-General of Oyo State. He was appointed in 1999 under the administration of former Governor Lam Adesina.

He was also appointed the executive chairman, of Oyo State Housing Corporation by Governor Seyi Makinde.

It would be recalled that the governor and his deputy, Engr. Rauf Olaniyan had not been on good terms in the recent past.

Olaniyan who noted that he had been sidelined by his boss, said he had not been involved in the “selection” of PDP candidates for the 2023 elections in the state.

He stated that the rumours surrounding his defection to another party were spreading like wildfire because he had stayed aloof.

Describing the primaries that produced PDP candidates in the state as “shenanigans”, he said: “You are not supposed to guess because on Sallah day I told the people the truth from my heart.”

Labour Party Has “Electorate Reservoir” To Drive Out APC, PDP – Peter Obi Tells Youths, Market Women

Labour Party Has

The Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, said the party could harness the numerical strength of its members to emerge victorious in next year’s polls.

He spoke on Wednesday while addressing journalists shortly after a meeting with leaders and members of the Labour Party in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

He opined that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not win the 2023 election because the parties “have expired and lost their political relevance in the country.”

Obi who recently resigned his membership of the main opposition party said the PDP stepped out of fortune and victory following its refusal to zone the Presidential ticket to the South.

Speaking through his campaign Director-General, Dr Doyin Okupe, Obi berated the PDP for being “unrighteous and unjust” by jettisoning the zoning arrangement of the party.

According to him, those who opposed zoning in the PDP put the existence of the PDP at risk and violated the gentleman agreement of the founding fathers of the party.

Obi said, he is banking on Nigeria’s workforce, youths, and market women to defeat both the APC and the PDP at the 2023 general elections.

He said, “The PDP was a veritable party that was put together by our elders and leaders. Those who came yesterday and said rotation does not matter undermine the very essence of the existence of the PDP, the moment they took that step, the PDP stepped out of line of fortune, of future, of victory because it has become suddenly unrighteous and unjust.

“There is no unrighteous and unjust pillar that will stand. The PDP was a good platform, but it has expired. The APC was never a good platform, it is of no consequence. The two parties are out, these two parties have expired, and they are not relevant to the new things that Nigerians and the youths are looking for.

“Labour party in the scheme of things is still a very small party, but we are not unaware of that before we moved here. But the Labour Party is a sleeping giant. The potential electorate reservoir of the Labour Party is more than three times the membership of APC and PDP put together. NLC, TUC, NURTW, market women, professional bodies, and students are all part of the Labour Party.

“The NLC has a membership of about 5 million, the TUC has a membership of about 8 to 10 million, the number of students registered in the Federal universities is about 2.5 million, those who are not in the Federal universities are about 6.7 million, when you add all that together, you are looking at about 20 reserved voters that have a direct affiliation with Labour Party.

“Our strategy will be to reawaken the Nigerian workers. Nigeria is going to see something it has not seen before, we will beat APC and PDP pants down.”

APC Presidential Primary: Endorse Me When You Get To Abuja, Tinubu Tells Gov Ayade

Former Lagos governor, Bola Tinubu who is seeking to clinch the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has requested Ben Ayade, Cross River governor, to support his presidential bid.

Ayade, who is also a presidential hopeful, met with Tinubu when the latter visited Cross River on Wednesday.

In his remarks, the former Lagos governor promised to improve the economy of Cross River if he is elected president.

“Mine is to respect you as you respect me. I appeal to you as your senior brother and the first to declare his intention, not to endorse me today, but when you get to Abuja, you can endorse me fully,” Tinubu said, according to a statement by his media office.

“We must have that unity of purpose. We must work together not only for the unity and economic development of Cross River but also of the country. We owe that to the present and future generations.”

On his part, Ayade said it is the turn of the south to produce the president, adding that the idea of zoning is to ensure equity.

“Zoning is a provision of our constitution to ensure balancing. It should not be about ethnic or regional domination but balancing. It’s the turn of southern Nigeria in 2023,” he was quoted as saying.

The former Lagos governor was accompanied on the visit by Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano; Tanko Al-Makura, former governor of Nasarawa; Kashim Shettima, former Borno governor, among others.

Again, Sen. Kalu Urges Buhari To Pick Lawan As Successor, Says He’ll Stabilise The Country

2023: Nigerians Should Vote For A President With Capacity In Economy, Security — Sen. Kalu [VIDEO]

Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has again urged President Muhammadu Buhari to consider picking the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan as the consensus presidential candidate of APC ahead of 2023 general elections.

Sen. Kalu a former governor of Abia State had a few days ago shortly after the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as PDP presidential candidate called on President Muhammadu Buhari to pick Lawan as his successor in order for APC not to embark on political retirement.

In a release on Thursday, Sen. Kalu said Lawan if elected as the country’s next President will stabilise the country, secure all parts of it and take its development seriously.

He said, “I urge President Muhammed Buhari to consider giving Nigeria a man who can give the entire country a sense of belonging ; fix our economy; secure all parts of the country; take education very serious and protect his legacy .

“The man Nigerians can trust is Senator Ahmad Lawan.

“Picking Ahmad Lawan as the consensus candidate of the APC will heal and stabilize the country as it is the closest to equity , justice and fairness.”

He also advised those who think the presidency of the country can be purchased with money to stop throwing their money around.

He said the Nigerian masses will collect the money and still vote their conscience.

“The earliest Nigerians and presidential aspirants understand that no amount of money can buy the president of the country , the better for everyone.

“It is only cohesion and consensus among the regions that can produce a president. If you throw in money , majority of the electorates will collect the money but still vote according to their conscience.

“If money can buy the office of the president of Nigeria, Late MKO Abiola could have bought it with extra change . If money can buy the president, former President Goodluck Jonathan could have bought the presidential seat in 2015” he noted.

The lawmaker insists that in the absence of a South East President, North East is closer to fairness, equity and justice.

“I strongly believe that the fairness Nigerians need is to produce a president from the South East of Nigeria. In the absence of the South East , it is the North East .

“These two regions are the only ones yet to produce the president of Nigeria and since the opposition has gone North East , it is ideal and wise that the APC go North East .

“I am sure Nigerians will not waste their votes on any candidate that is not from the two regions in the next year general elections and following years” he concluded.

Governor Charles Soludo

Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has ordered all landlords in the state to proceed on what he called “Operation Know Your Tenant” as part of measures to fight insecurity in the state.

The governor directed the landlords to keep appropriate records of tenants and report anyone suspected of being involved in criminal activities to security operatives.

Soludo, who spoke through his Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, insisted that no part of Anambra State, whether the house, bush, or forest, should be used as a camp for criminals, adding that anyone with a gun in a camp should be considered a criminal and vowed that government and the people would work with security agencies to flush them out.

He said: “The state government shall, pursuant to its powers under the Land Use Act, revoke and acquire any land found to be harboring these criminals, for public purpose.

“Henceforth, every community is required to provide information on any part of their land occupied by these criminals as camps. If the community fails to do so, the government will take over such land.

“Similarly, any buildings found to be harboring kidnappers and murderers in the state will as provided by Criminal Code (Amendment No.3) Law 2013, be forfeited to the government.

“All hotels have been directed to obtain the means of identification of their guests, keep an inventory of all guests and immediately report any suspicious persons or group of persons checking into or converging in their facilities.
“Various ranges of bounties have been placed on criminals in the state. These are some of the sincere measures to ensure that peace returns in the state”.

According to the governor, the steps being taken by his administration were already yielding satisfactory results with more successes anticipated.

He assured of the readiness of the government to uproot any form of criminality in the state and encouraged the people to go about their lawful duties as their security is the number one priority of the government.

He described the May 20 killing of Mrs. Harira Jibril and her four children by unidentified assailants as “barbaric and unacceptable” and vowed to fish out the perpetrators and ensure they were dealt with according to law.

“The government of Anambra State cannot shirk or relent on its constitutional responsibility of securing the life and property of the citizens and residents.

“Some proactive actions are already being taken to allay the fears of the residents” he added.
