When Orji Kalu Shook Abia With Constituency Projects

Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has said he has not been appointed the Director General of Ahmad Lawan’s campaign organization, saying online report to this effect is false.

Online media outlets had on Thursday reported that Sen. Kalu, representing Abia North has been appointed to head the campaign organization of the Senate President who is in the race to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Sen. Kalu in a release he personally endorsed on Friday said it’s not time yet to appoint a campaign team, stating that such will be put in place as soon as SP Lawan emerges the candidate of APC in the upcoming presidential primary election of the party.

He said, “My attention has been drawn to a list of committee Chairmen of Ahmad Lawan Campaign Organization in which I was also mentioned as the Director General.

“The list should be disregarded as no authorization was given to the effect of its publication.

“As the Chairman of the meeting held at my instance , it is important to notify the general public that we are not yet in the Campaign proper . A committee will be inaugurated to that effect once our most preferred candidate, Senator Ahmad Lawan emerges as the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC).”

He further highlighted that he would prefer a governor who is not running for election to head the campaign team, adding that he is also contesting to return to the senate in 2023.

“I am also running for election in my senatorial district and would rather recommend a sitting Governor who is not running for an election to chair the campaign team at the right time .

“Several private visitors who were not even part of the meeting were also reported to have been in attendance. Senator Betty Apiafi just as Senator Uche Ekwunife who visited on a different bipartisan matter concerning the senate was also mentioned.

“It is mischief to have included these names as part of Ahmad Lawan Campaign Organization” he concluded.

India’s foreign minister on Friday defended Indian oil imports from Russia at the GLOBSEC Bratislava Forum, saying there is a need to be “even-handed.”

“Is buying Russian gas not funding the war? It’s only Indian money and oil coming to India which funds [the war] but it’s not gas coming to Europe which funds [the war]? Let’s be a little even-handed out here,” Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar said during an annual meeting on Indian foreign policy in the Indo-Pacific.

India has repeatedly defended its oil imports from Russia and has justified its increase in oil imports for this year. لعب بوكر Jaishankar confirmed that India’s oil imports had gone up at least nine times between 2021 and 2022. بلاك جاك اون لاين

“If the countries in Europe and the West and the United States are so concerned, why don’t they allow Iranian oil to come into the market? Why don’t they allow Venezuelan oil to come into the market? They have squeezed every other source of oil we have,” he added.

The comments come on the heels of the partial ban on Russian oil imports announced by the European Union on Monday.

“We don’t send people out there saying, ‘go buy Russian oil.’ We send people out there saying, ‘go buy oil.’ Now, you buy the best oil you can in the market. تكساس هولدم بوكر I don’t think I would attach a political messaging to that,” Jaishankar said.

Mexico, Ecuador Friendlies Good For Super Eagles’ AFCON Qualifier Vs Sierra Leone – Tijani

Former Nigerian winger, Tijani Babangida has revealed that the Mexico and Ecuador friendly game will serve as a dress rehearsal for the Super Eagles ahead of their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone.

Recall that the team lost 2-1 to Mexico on Sunday before losing 1-0 to Ecuador on Friday morning under new coach, Jose Peseiro.

The three-time AFCON champions are expected to kick-start their campaign against Sierra Leone on June 9 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium Abuja.

Already, newly appointed Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro is already under pressure to hit the ground running and convince Nigerian football fans of his abilities.

However, Tijani in a chat, stated that despite losing to Mexico and Ecuador, the Super Eagles are still favourite to overcome Sierra Leone.

“Losing to Mexico and Ecuador in an international friendly doesn’t really mean that it will be the same thing against Sierra Leone when the 2023 AFCON campaign kicksoff.

” I am sure the coach, Jose Peseiro would have seen some of the lapses in the team and will want to make amend.

“So the two international friendly games will only serve as a dress-rehearsal for the game against the Leone stars.”

EU Adopts Sixth Package Of Anti-Russia Sanctions, Including Partial Oil Embargo

The Council of the EU has adopted the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, which includes a delayed embargo on Russian seaborne crude oil and petroleum products, de-SWIFTing of Sberbank, Russian Agricultural Bank, Credit Bank of Moscow, and the Belarusian Bank for Development and Reconstruction, as well as suspension of the broadcasting activities of Rossiya 24, RTR Planeta, and TV Centre International channels, according to a statement released on Friday.

The phasing out of Russian oil will take “from 6 months for crude oil to 8 months for other refined petroleum products,” the statement said. Sanctions are expected to come into force later on Friday after they are published in the Official Journal.

“A temporary exception is foreseen for imports of crude oil by pipeline into those EU member states that, due to their geographic situation, suffer from a specific dependence on Russian supplies and have no viable alternative options,” the document said. Hungary and Slovakia are meant as those countries in the first place. Moreover, “Bulgaria and Croatia will also benefit from temporary derogations concerning the import of Russian seaborne crude oil,” according to the statement.

“The EU is suspending the broadcasting activities in the EU of three more Russian state-owned outlets: RTR Planeta, Rossiya 24 and TV Centre International,” the document said. “These measures will not prevent those media outlets and their staff from carrying out activities in the EU other than broadcasting, e.g. research and interviews,” the statement said. These structures have been used by the Russian Government “as instruments to manipulate information and promote disinformation about the invasion of Ukraine, including propaganda, with the aim to destabilize Russia’s neighboring countries and the EU and its member states,” the EU said.

New EU sanctions envision cutting off Sberbank, Russian Agricultural Bank, Credit Bank of Moscow, and the Belarusian Bank for Development and Reconstruction from the international payment system SWIFT. “The EU is extending the existing prohibition on the provision of specialized financial messaging services (SWIFT) to three additional Russian credit institutions – Russia’s largest bank Sberbank, Credit Bank of Moscow, and Russian Agricultural Bank – and the Belarusian Bank For Development And Reconstruction,” the statement by the Council of the EU said.

The sixth package of EU sanctions against Russia also contains a ban on the provision of consultancy, accounting and public relations services, as well as cloud services, to Russia. “The EU will prohibit the provision of accounting, public relations and consultancy services, as well as cloud services to Russia,” the document said.

The EU will also expand the list of persons and entities in Russia and Belarus concerned by export restrictions regarding dual-use goods and technology. “Moreover, the EU will expand the list of goods and technology which may contribute to the technological enhancement of Russia’s defense and security sector. This will include 80 chemicals which can be used to produce chemical weapons,” the statement said.

Furthermore, the Council has expanded the list of individuals and entities facing personal sanctions by adding “those responsible for the atrocities committed by Russian troops in Bucha and Mariupol, personalities supporting the war, leading businesspersons and family members of listed oligarchs and Kremlin officials, as well as companies in the defense and a financial organization,” according to the statement.

We’ll conduct all-inclusive census – National Population Commission

The National Population Commission (NPC) has assured of conducting an all-inclusive census, insisting that everyone within the boundaries of Nigeria must be enumerated during the 2023 Population and Housing Census.

Nasir Isa Kwarra, Chairman of NPC, stated this while declaring open a workshop on a special population survey in Mararaba, Nasarawa State.

Kwarra noted that the population of homeless households; homeless persons; nomadic households; transient persons; migrant fishermen; migrant farmers; mobile hunters and refugees/Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) must be counted by the staff of the commission during the census.

He said: “One of the key features of a census, as outlined in the UN Recommendation for the conduct of Population and Housing Censuses, its universality; that is, the population and housing census should provide data on the total number of persons, households, and housing within a precisely defined territory of a country.

“Practically, it means that everyone within the boundaries of the Federal Republic of Nigeria must be enumerated in the 2023 Population and Housing Census(PHC).

“However, experience has shown that the enumeration of special populations usually constitutes a significant challenge in censuses.

“This is due to the unique nature of their settlement, occupation, or other characteristics that make them special compared to regular or institutional populations.

“This is why it is critical that, as the Commission prepares for the 2023 Population and Housing Census, all members of these groups must be identified on time wherever they are, and their locations mapped and geo-referenced into the national frame to ensure that adequate planning is made for their enumeration during the census.”

Apart from identifying and mapping the location of these special populations, he said, it has become imperative to provide important socio-cultural and qualitative information that will facilitate planning for publicity, logistics, and appropriate procedure for the enumeration of these groups.

While commending the managers of the project for assiduously working to deliver the project under the tight timeline of the 2023 PHC, Kwarra urged them to work assiduously to deliver the data for pre-testing during the Trial Census scheduled for this month.

In his goodwill message, Mr. Semiu Adeniran, Statistician-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), described the identification and mapping of a special population as very critical to the success of PHC for national planning.

Adeniran, who lauded the NPC for embarking on such an exercise, said the mapping of the special population was in line with the mandate of the household survey conducted by NBS.

He, however, called for a stronger collaboration between NPC and NBS, adding that the two government agencies should work together for national development.

Ms. Ulla Mueller, Country Representative, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) assured of the UN’s support in the conduct of a reliable, credible, and acceptable census in Nigeria.

Mueller, represented by Dr. Collins Opiyo, Census Technical Adviser to Nigeria, commended the leadership of the NPC for their preparations toward 2023 PHC so far and ensured that no one would be left behind in the conduct of the forthcoming census.

He pointed out that the 2023 PHC has provided the opportunity for NPC to re-write the history of the census in Nigeria as the forthcoming census is the first digital census.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Wuse, on Friday, remanded Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer, Osinachi, at the Kuje Correctional Facility, pending the hearing and determination of the homicide-related suit instituted against him by the Attorney General of the Federation.

Justice N.K. Nwosu-Iheme gave the order after he pleaded not guilty to 23 counts bordering on domestic violence and homicide, among others.

The judge ordered that the suspect be remanded at the correctional facility, while trial was adjourned to June 16 from 12pm and June 17 by 9am.

APC Crisis: I’m Not A Political Emperor, I Owe My Position To Ogun People, Gov. Abiodun Fires Back At Tinubu

Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, has reacted to claims by All Progressives Congress national leader, Bola Tinubu, that he made him the governor.

Dapo was the target of Tinubu’s vituperations and tirade yesterday in Abeokuta after an unsettled Tinubu bares his mind on what he perceived to be a conspiracy to frustrate his presidential ambition by those he had helped in the past.

In a thinly-veiled response on Friday, Dapo played down the role of Tinubu in his emergence as Ogun governor in 2019.

The humiliated governor also said he is not an emperor with an entitlement mentality.

“I am not an emperor by any chance and this is not my family inheritance,” the Ogun governor tweeted on Friday morning. “I am holding this position in trust for all the people of this state and I have vowed to be fair, just and equitable and this is the solemn agreement I made between the Almighty God and myself.”

Tinubu has insisted that he has to be the next president of Nigeria. He was in Abeokuta on Thursday afternoon to meet delegates of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“This one sitting behind me, Dapo, can he say he could have become a governor but for me?”  Tinubu said derisively while pointing at Abiodun.

The governor did not fire back at the event, but he appeared visibly humiliated.

Also at the gathering, Tinubu also claimed credit for making Muhammadu Buhari president in 2015, as well as his political favours to Atiku Abubakar, Nuhu Ribadu, and other personalities across the country.
