Indication has emerged that the reconstruction of Nigeria’s second largest seaport, the Tin-Can Island Port in Lagos, will gulp about 600 million US dollars (N360 billion).
Recall that the Nigeria port Authority hinted at rehabilitating the Tin-Can Island Port created 47 years after it was constructed, noting that it has reached its full life circle.
The Managing Director (MD) of NPA, Mohammed Bello-koko, on Friday on Arise TV revealed that the authority needs about 600 million dollars for the reconstruction of the Tin-Can Island Ports Complex.
Bello-koko said: “The decision to carry out a holistic redesign of the port was reached after extensive consultations with the terminal operators. It was agreed that a holistic design of the new port should be made as against the option of allowing terminal operators to individually reconstruct their berths and terminals.”
The MD further revealed that if terminal operators are allowed to do it individually at their own time, it might impinge on the integrity of the quays, which would not pay off in the long run.
He said the other option is for the NPA to approach the federal government to request that it should be allowed to use a certain percentage of the funds it transfers to the Consolidated Revenue Fund, for the reconstruction.
“We transfer about N60bn on a yearly basis and so the government could approve that we use 40 per cent or 50 per cent of this amount for the reconstruction. We actually believe that we do not need to borrow to fund this project.
“Another option is to do a hybrid funding whereby the terminal operators would fund this reconstruction, but the issue here is that while some terminal operators could have the financial strength to carry out the project, others might not, and if we allow them to do it individually, it might affect the integrity of the quays,” he added.

The presidential spokesperson in an interview, yesterday, with the BBC Hausa Service, said: “The meeting was among the series of meetings President Muhammadu Buhari commenced with the chieftains and party bigwigs in the APC to ensure the APC presidential primary election is conducted peacefully; and to make sure APC is placed on the right pedestal that will bring victory to the party during the presidential election in 2023.”
Asked if the issue of power shift was discussed at the meeting, Malam Garba Shehu said: “No, that was not discussed. When told that some Nigerian newspapers had written that the President was in support of power going South, Shehu said: “Nothing of such was discussed, as even if the President had such an opinion, he did not come out to say it at the meeting.”
When reminded that there were rumours President Buhari might come out to announce the person he was supporting to succeed him, Shehu explained: “What the President was saying was that he was prepared to continue providing the leadership that would lead to the emergence of a candidate through a peaceful and harmonious process that the aspirants, governors and other party leaders would adopt.”
On what President Buhari would do if the aspirants failed to arrive at a consensus arrangement, Shehu said the President would have no choice, adding: “We have to follow the election process.”
Ahead of the 2023 general elections, a presidential aspirant and Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, on Sunday said he is the voice of the young people.
The governor made the assertion on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, a few hours before the commencement of the presidential primary election of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“By June this year, I will be 47. I am still the young of the young people, the voice of the younger generation, the voice for the women, the voice for people living with disabilities, and the voice for Nigerians irrespective of religion, region, or tribe because we have demonstrated it in Kogi State,” the governor said.
If the APC gives him the opportunity to fly its flag next year, the Kogi governor boasted that he will defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
He claimed that he would be celebrating his victory by 2 pm on the day of the presidential election if the APC gives him the ticket.
Bello also spoke on his plans to revamp Nigeria’s security challenges, recalling that when he came on board as Kogi on January 27, 2016, the state was experiencing security challenges.
When asked if he has the solution to Nigeria’s security challenges, the governor did not directly answer the question.
Rather, he explained that he has demonstrated his ability to tackle insecurity based on his experience in Kogi State.
“I have demonstrated that well enough in Kogi State. By the special grace of God, we are going to achieve it within the first 12 months of Governor Yahaya Bello’s presidency,” he added.

A group, the APC Truth Forum, has called on Nigerians to disregard the news that All Progressives Congress (APC) has zoned power to the South.
Prof Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr, the Convener “APC Truth Forum” said in a statement that the news making the rounds about the zoning of the APC Presidential ticket to the South at the behest of certain Northern Governors in the APC was not true.
He said ‘the truth is that in compliance with the directive of Mr President that Governors should meet to discuss on the possibility of a consensus candidate for the Party, the Governors met on the 4th of June, 2022. And some 11 Governors from the North who are clearly interested in being Vice Presidential Candidates to their friends from the South allegedly agreed .. to support a candidate from the South, and mandated three Governors amongst them (Simon Lalong of Plateau State, Governor Sule of Nasarawa State and Governor Bagudu of Kebbi State) to broach the idea with Mr President.
“Mr President refused to meet with them, and reiterated his position, that the Presidential aspirants in the Ruling Party the APC should find a formidable consensus candidate amongst themselves. The President did not approve of any zoning to the South or the North,’ he said.
According to him, “no communique to the effect that Northern Governors have conceded the Presidential Ticket to the South was indeed signed.
Note that the tradition of the Northern Governors when releasing a communique is to sign against their names, the disparity in the document presently in circulation can be seen.”
“In the Press Statement released by the Governors, you will notice that the signatures appeared on a new page as opposed to the valid and authentic tradition of the Governors signing on the Communique page and against their names.”
“The general public is hereby put on notice that Mr President, and indeed the All Progressive Congress has not zoned the Presidential Ticket of the Party to the South or the North.”
“We implore the media to discountenance the news making the rounds. And call on the esteemed delegates of our great Party to vote for the candidate they consider fit, proper, competent, youthful, formidable, and possessing the ability and the capacity to lead our great Party to victory in the 2023 Presidential Election”. He said.
