Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations said the country’s military is progressing according to plan in its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

“The progress is being made, that’s clear,” Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, told the BBC in an interview broadcast Wednesday. “Nobody promised to deliver it in three or seven days, as some pundits are saying now.”

He claimed “the plan is developing according to the military plans that were initially envisaged — of course with minor tactical changes, because you cannot predict whatever happens on the front line.”

“You will see the liberation of all the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts. That will hopefully take place soon,” he said.

Some context: More than three months into its bloody assault on Ukraine, Russia insists on referring to the Kremlin’s attack as a “special military operation,” effectively banning words such as invasion and war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is warning that millions of people around the world may starve if Russia fails to allow Ukraine to export grain from its ports.

“We cannot export our wheat, corn, vegetable oil and other products that have played a stabilizing role in the global market,” he said according to the prepared remarks of a taped video address to the Time 100 Gala.
“This means that, unfortunately, dozens of countries may face a physical shortage of food. Millions of people may starve if Russia’s blockade of the Black Sea continues.”

Some context: Global leaders have condemned a months-long blockade by Russian forces at key ports in Ukraine — including Mariupol on the Sea of Azov and Odesa on the Black Sea — which has left more than 20 million tons of grain stuck inside the country. The Ukrainian Navy said Monday that approximately 30 Russian ships and submarines continued the blockade of civilian shipping in the Black Sea.

Katsina Has Over 500,000 Out-Of-School Children - UBEC

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has disclosed that data from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) shows that 536,132 children have stopped going to school in Katsina.

This was disclosed on Wednesday by Muntaka Mukhtar, UNICEF education specialist at a media dialogue on the ‘Girl’s Education Project (GEP-3)’ in Katsina.

Mukhtar said Nigeria is among the top five countries with a high number of out-of-school children, adding that more priority should be given to girl-child education.

“This data is not from UNICEF. Rather, it is according to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) data,” he said.

“Girls’ education goes beyond getting girls into school, it includes ensuring girls learn and feel safe while in school, having the opportunity to complete all levels of education, acquiring the knowledge and skills to compete in the labour market, gaining socio-emotional and life skills necessary to navigate and adapt to a changing world making decisions about their own lives, and also contributing to their communities and the world.”

He expressed concern over the rate of female children who are out of school, adding that they are deterred by some societal practices which prioritize male over girl child education.

He said women with primary education are paid between 14 and 19 percent higher than those without education, adding that those who acquired secondary education earn twice more than those with primary or without education.

“Every day, girls face barriers to education caused by poverty, cultural norms, poor infrastructure, violence, and fragility,” he added.

“On prioritizing education for girls, better-educated women tend to be more informed about nutrition and health, have fewer children, and marry at a later age.

“Educated girls are better equipped to become healthier, more prosperous adults, with smaller families and children who are less at risk of illness and death, and more likely to succeed.

“Child marriage and early childbearing, virtually eliminate child marriage and holds the potential to reduce by 75 percent, the risk of early childbearing for women.

“Health, nutrition, and well-being increase women’s knowledge of HIV/AIDS, and also empower them to make decisions about their own healthcare.

“It also improves their sense of psychological well-being, reduces the risk of partner violence, under-five mortality, and malnutrition among children.”

Days After Owo Attack, Gunmen Kill 6 In Ondo

No fewer than six persons were shot dead at Sabo Area of Ondo town, Ondo State on Wednesday night by some men suspected to be bandits.

This came 72 hours after some terrorists attacked St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, killing about 40 people.

Several other church members were injured in the attack.

It was gathered that the gunmen were on motorcycles when they carried out the attack.

Another source said the gunmen also robbed some residents of the area before they left the scene.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the state, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident.

She, however, said it was a robbery case, adding that men of the command were already on the trail of the perpetrators.

INEC Seeks Air Force Support On Security, Logistics

The Independent National Electoral Commission has requested the support of the Nigerian Air Force in deploying personnel and airlifting election materials to remote and insecure areas across the country.

The commission also solicited the support of the Air Force to provide security in volatile areas just as it had been doing during the off-cycle elections.

This was made known on Wednesday by the INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu during his visit to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao in Abuja

“On February 25, 2023, and March 11, 2023, the commission will deploy personnel and materials to about 190,000 voting and collation locations nationwide for 1,491 executive and legislative offices across Nigeria,” the INEC boss disclosed.

He added, “Beyond logistics support, the Air Force has also deployed its assets to provide security during off-cycle elections, especially in areas of difficult terrain.

“Election constitutes the most extensive mobilization and complex logistics operations that could happen in a country in peacetime.

“These activities must take place simultaneously, stretching over 923,768km2 within a space of six voting hours (8.30 am – 2.30 pm) involving a projected population of 90 million voters.

“In handling such a huge national assignment, the Commission cannot do it alone as national assets must be mobilized. It is in the realization of this objective that the law empowers the Commission to seek the support of the security agencies in general and the Armed Forces in particular in delivering materials for election and the protection of election officials.

“Provided that the Commission shall only request for the deployment of the Nigerian Armed Forces for the purpose of securing the distribution and delivery of election materials and protection of election officials.”

He also requested the help of the Air Force in handling the delivery of outstanding election materials for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections.

Yakubu added, “There is no time to waste. The 2023 general election is only 261 days from today. However, the Ekiti State Governorship election holds in the next 10 days on Saturday, June 18, 2022, while the Osun Governorship election holds in 38 days on Saturday, July 16, 2022.

“We will seek the support of the Air Force in handling the delivery of outstanding election materials to the two States while the commission bears responsibility for all subsequent deployment within the states to the Local Government Areas and beyond as has been the practice.”

Responding, Amao commended INEC for strengthening electoral processes in the country.

He promised to give INEC necessary NAF support and coordination in airlifting all the election materials, and logistics including staff coming up in Nigeria to any parts of remote areas of any state to ensure a hitch-free, inclusive, and fair election.

Court Remands 30-Year-Old Man For Alleged Attempt To Kill Father, Wife

A Magistrate’s Court in Ilorin remanded a 30-year-old farmer, Alli Hassan, on Wednesday for allegedly threatening to kill his biological father, Hassan Auta.

The suspect was arrested by the Kwara State Police Command after he allegedly threatened to kill his father, Hassan Auta, with a cutlass in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.

According to the police report, the defendant’s father reported to the Share police station that his son arrived home late and drunk on a fateful day.

It was revealed that the defendant went into his wife’s room with a cutlass and threatened to kill her unless she packed her belongings out of the house.

With the same cutlass, the suspect went into his father’s room and threatened to kill him.

The prosecutor, Issa Abubakar, urged the court to remand the defendant to the Correctional Service facility, saying his offence is not ordinarily bailable.

The trial Magistrate, Abiola Agbetola Issa, who presided over the matter, ordered that the defendant be remanded in custody, while the matter was adjourned to June 22, 2022.

Popular social-political activist, Aisha Yesufu, has slammed Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, calling him a betrayer.

She went on to say that Osinbajo did not betray his former boss and APC national leader Bola Tinubu, but Nigerians.

Tinubu received 1,271 votes, defeating Rotimi Amaechi, who received 316 votes. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo finished third in the primary, with 235 votes.

Aisha suggested that the Vice President, who many people, especially in the South West, are seeing as a betrayer for picking the presidential form and running against his former boss, failed because he allegedly turned his back on the people.

She claimed that many Nigerians voted for the All Progressives Congress in 2015 simply because of Osinbajo’s face on the campaign posters but he allegedly failed them.

Aisha tweeted: “Osinbajo @ProfOsinbajo betrayed the people, not Tinubu. Many voted for the APC ticket in 2015 because of Osinbajo.

“He went in there and turned his back on the people. He decided to side with oppression and suppression!”

2023: Moghalu Loses ADC Presidential Ticket To Kachikwu

The founder of Roots Television, Dumebi Kachikwu, has emerged as the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He emerged the winner after defeating the likes of Kingsley Moghalu, Chukwuka Monye, and eight other aspirants at the party’s presidential primary held in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State on Wednesday.

Mr. Kachikwu, the younger brother of Nigeria’s former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, was declared the winner after polling 977 votes against his closest contender, Mr. Moghalu.

Mr. Moghalu, the former deputy governor of the CBN, came second with 589 votes while Mr. كيفية لعب بينجو Monye came third with 339 votes.

In his address to the delegates before the election, Mr. Kachikwu said his emergence would be the end of the political careers of the flag bearers of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 election.

“I am here to offer myself to you not because I am better than anybody here, but because I care about the future of our country.

“I offer myself because God has given me the main recognition to stand side-by-side with Atiku, and Tinubu to send them into retirement,” he said at the event.

With his loss, on Wednesday, Mr. Moghalu may not be on the ballot for next year’s presidential election. الربح الحقيقي

As the Young Progressive Party (YPP) presidential candidate in 2019, Mr. Moghalu scored 21,886 votes in the main election to secure the 14th position behind the winner, President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC.

Apart from Messrs Moghalu and Monye, Mani Ibrahim, Angela Johnson, Joyce Nsaka, Chike Okogwu, Chichi Ojei, Favour Ayodele, Muhammed Lamido, Ify-George Oforkansi, and Ebiti Jegede also obtained the ADC presidential forms.

Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, yesterday said the South-East was denied the opportunity to produce the next president owing to lack of equity.

Uzodimma spoke when he featured on Sunrise Daily, a Channels TV programme, monitored by ABN TV.

There has been a clamour for political parties to zone their presidential tickets to the South-East.

In May, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) conducted its special convention, but Atiku Abubakar, who is from the north, was elected as the party’s presidential candidate.

The presidential primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC)  in Abuja produced Bola Tinubu, an aspirant from the southwest.

Speaking yesterday, Uzodimma who is the chairman of the APC special convention, said the south-east should produce the next president but they will not because of injustice.

“From the view of political calculation, the sentiment of the people in the south-east is that they deserve to produce the president because the reason why this power is moving from the north to the south is that the current president is from the north having served for eight years,” he said.

“The reason the south-east is asking for it is that when the power came to the south, it went to the south-west and was there for eight years and the next time it came to the south it went to the south-south and it was there for seven years plus.

“The natural thing to do and the justice of the case is that now that power is coming again to the south and since it is only three geo-political zones that made up the south, it should come to the south-east, having been in the south-west and south-south.

“In a situation where equity should be the issue, we (south-east) don’t need to struggle for it. But here again, you see how it has come. We will continue to hope that one day God will touch the heart of our brothers and sisters to do that which belongs to us.”

Uzodimma said the presidential hopefuls from the south-east who withdrew from the race to support northern candidates did so because they hoped to produce the next president when power returns to the south.

“This is what has to be discussed at the party level because it is a serious matter and we are dealing with human beings here. You cannot just wake up and take any decision. There are consequences to every action. Those are the things that will be discussed and something must be done,” he said.

“Most of our people (presidential hopefuls) here who came from the south-east, when they saw that it will be difficult clinching to the ticket, they opted for a northern candidate.

“The reason is very simple because when a northern candidate stays for eight years and then the power will come back to the south; this time around maybe we the south-east  will have the opportunity.”

New Technical Adviser of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro has stated that his mission is to help Nigeria win the next African Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire, next year.

The Portuguese coach made the remarks to the Minister of Youth and Sports Development on Thursday, as he was officially received at the Minister’s Conference Room.

Peseiro said: “I came here for one goal; I want to win the next AFCON for my fantastic players and for Nigerians. I am confident because I believe in this team, I believe in the quality and the number of good players. I have followed Nigeria’s history in football from the 1994 and other successful teams and I want to bring back that joy again”

The 62-year-old thanked the Ministry and the NFF for giving him the opportunity to work with Nigeria, reiterating Nigeria’s stance as a top footballing nation in Africa.

“Nigeria is top 5 when it comes to football in Africa. I want to say appreciate the minister and the Football Federation for this opportunity to lead the national team. I will work round the clock to ensure we achieve as much success as possible and the journey starts now”.

Peseiro has previously worked with top clubs such as Real Madrid, FC Porto, Braga, etc. With the Super Eagles do with the tour of the U.S for preparatory games, the team will switch attention to the AFCON 2023 qualifiers.

Nigeria will take on the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Thursday, 9th June, before traveling to Marrakech to face Sao Tome and Principe on Tuesday, 13th June 2022.
