Thailand Legalises Marijuana Cultivation, Consumption

Thailand has legalised the growing and possession of cannabis and its consumption in food and drinks, the first Asian country to do so, with the aim of boosting its agriculture and tourism sectors – but smoking it recreationally is still against the law.

The public health minister is planning to distribute 1 million cannabis seedlings, starting Friday, to encourage farmers to take up its cultivation.

However, Thailand’s government has said it is promoting cannabis for medical use only, warning those eager to light up for fun that smoking in public could still be considered a nuisance, subject to a potential three-month sentence and 25,000 Thai baht ($780) fine.

So far, it appears there will be no effort to police what people can grow and smoke at home, aside from registering to do so and declaring it is for medical purposes. Thailand legalised medicinal cannabis in 2018. كيف تربح في لعبة الروليت

Authorities aim to head off an explosion in recreational use by limiting the strength of the cannabis products that are legal. Products that contain more than 0.2 per cent of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the chemical that makes people high, are still illegal.

Shoppers queued up at outlets selling cannabis-infused drinks, sweets and other items on Thursday as advocates of the plant welcomed the reform in a country with a reputation for strict anti-drug laws.

Among those at the front of the queue at one Bangkok shop was Rittipong, 24, who waited overnight to buy his first-ever legal cannabis.

“We’re now able to find it easily, we don’t have to worry about the source, but I have no idea about the quality,” he said, referring to the strength of the products on offer.

Chokwan Kitty Chopaka, who owns a store selling cannabis sweets, told Reuters: “After COVID, the economy going down the drain, we really do need this,”

Thailand’s tropical climate is ideal for growing cannabis, and the government wants to make a splash in the market for medical cannabis. It is projected to boost everything from national income to small farmers’ livelihoods.

“We should know how to use cannabis,” Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the country’s biggest cannabis supporter, said recently. “If we have the right awareness, cannabis is like gold, something valuable, and should be promoted.”

But, he added, “We will have additional Ministry of Health Notifications, by the Department of Health. If it causes nuisances, we can use that law [to stop people from smoking].”

He said the government prefers to “build an awareness” rather than patrolling to check on people and using the law to punish them.

Some immediate beneficiaries of the change are people who have been locked up for breaking the old law.

“From our perspective, a major positive outcome of the legal changes is that at least 4,000 people imprisoned for offences relating to cannabis will be released,” Gloria Lai, Asia regional director of the International Drug Policy Consortium, told The Associated Press in an email interview. كازينو أون نت

“People facing cannabis-related charges will see them dropped, and money and cannabis seized from people charged with cannabis-related offences will be returned to their owners. العاب لكسب المال

Former FinBank MD, Okey Nwosu Loses As Appeal Court Affirms His Conviction Over N19.2bn Fraud

Attempt by the former managing director of the defunct FinBank Plc, Mr. Okey Nwosu, and Dayo Famoroti to set aside their conviction by Justice Lateefa Okunnu of the Lagos High Court suffered a setback yesterday as the Court of Appeal sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos upheld their conviction as well as the three years jail terms slammed on them.

However, the appellate court reduced the restitution order made from Eighteen Billion Naira to Ten Billion Naira on the grounds that the bank (FinBank Plc.) had recovered about Eight Billion Naira.

Justice Okunnu, had in January 2021 convicted and sentenced Okey Nwosu and Famoroti to three years imprisonment over N19.2 billion fraud, a release signed by EFCC Head Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren said.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted Nwosu alongside Dayo Famoroti, Agnes Ebubedike and Danjuma Ocholi on a 26-count amended charge bordering on stealing and illegal conversion to the tune of N19.2 billion.

The defendants were said to have perpetrated the fraud while they were directors of the bank.

Tinubu clinched the presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday.

The President, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, congratulated the APC presidential flagbearer in the 2023 elections and assured him of “full and unwavering” support.

He expressed belief that Tinubu will safeguard and improve on the democratic achievement and legacy.

Buhari said the party must now unite behind the candidate to achieve victory at the 2023 elections.

He said: “Having emerged victorious he has our full and unwavering support. Now, our party must unite behind our candidate to achieve victory at the 2023 elections so that our government will continue to secure our communities, grow our economy and continue the fight against corruption.

“During the Primaries, there were factions and disagreements amongst the contestants and now that the process has ended we must build a united front in our party. In this way, the APC will remain the party that can best deliver on the priorities of the Nigerian people. Now, it is time to put the process behind us.

“Because what we can all agree is that the APC remains the party that can best deliver on the priorities of the Nigerian people. But the way to demonstrate that we can get on with this job is to unite.”

The President added: “The movement we created in 2013 is beyond individuals. Together, we made history by becoming the first party in our country’s history to unseat a party in power and propel our candidate into the Presidency through a peaceful democratic transfer of power.

“We strongly believe that Bola Ahmed Tinubu will safeguard and improve on this democratic achievement and legacy. He is the right candidate for Nigeria’s aspiration because he is the APC’s candidate and under the continued stewardship of our party. Nigeria can achieve greatness and fulfill its destiny in Africa and the World.

“The high point of this extraordinary convention of our party was the energy of the Presidential aspirants and it is from amongst them that we have chosen the most popular leader.

“I recognize and commend the enthusiasm and self-confidence amongst our party men and women.

“I also thank the delegates for making the right decision leading to the emergence of our candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
