Gov Soludo Reveals Why 1000 Teachers Were Sacked In Anambra
Governor Chukwuma Soludo

Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, said that no fewer than 1,000 teachers in the state were relieved of their appointments with the state government because they were employed in a hazy manner.

The governor stated that the affected persons thereby remained unqualified for the job.

The clarification was made on Thursday by Soludo via a statement signed by Chris Aburime, his Press Secretary.

According to Soludo, no qualified teacher was sacked by the government.

Soludo said that the termination of the appointments was in line with his administration’s effort at repositioning the education sector according to standard practice.

The statement said, “Thee attention of the Governor has been drawn to publications on protest by Parents/Teachers Association teachers, purportedly converted to permanent staff in Anambra schools.

“The protesters, who barricaded the entrance of the state House of Assembly, displayed placards with various inscriptions, claiming to have been engaged by the state government before the termination of their jobs.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no qualified teacher in the state’s school system has been relieved of his/her appointment.

“The affected PTA teachers who were “converted” to the school system in the last days of the last administration in irregular, hazy circumstances.

“They were only asked to regularise their employment with the government by taking part in the online teachers’ recruitment test.

“The idea is to ensure that only those with requisite qualifications, proven capacity, and commensurate experiences are recruited into the system.

“At all times, Prof. Soludo means well for the good people of Anambra State and will stop at nothing in giving them the best, education inclusive.”

Some of the affected teachers said they were duly employed and issued appointment letters by the last administration in November 2021 but were sacked in April 2022.

They said they had served the Anambra education school system for between two years and seven years as Parents/Teachers’ Association teachers.

They argued that if they could be engaged in that capacity, they should also be worthy of regularised employment.

The sacked teachers said it was unfair to sack them unceremoniously after working for about seven months without pay and called on the governor to kindly reinstate them.

The state government had advertised 5,000 vacancies in the Education and Health sectors, in which no fewer than 31,800 were shortlisted for the computer-based test.

The online examination is scheduled to hold on June 11.

Senator Godswill Akpabio

The immediate past Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio has emerged the Senatorial candidate for Akwa Ibom North West under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the 2023 general elections.

The returning officer of the Senatorial primary held Thursday night in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Council of Akwa Ibom, Bunmi Moloye announced that out of the 512 accredited delegates, Akpabio polled 478 votes, while DIG EkpoUdom (Rtd.) and Sir Joseph Akpan scored 3 and 1 votes, respectively.

ABN TV reports that the nomination was held earlier on May 28, but was nullified following petitions bordering on security infractions.

According to the State chairman of the party, Sir Stephen Ntukekpo, who addressed the people before the nomination, the National Working Committee of the party mandated him to conduct a rerun of the election yesterday, adding that he duly informed the aspirants concerned about the exercise.

He said, “almost a week ago, a similar exercise was conducted here and as a State chairman, I received a letter from the National Working Committee, indicating with strong words that there are some sufficient and profound infractions in the Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial district.

“They mandated us to rerun the same exercise today, on that note, permit me to introduce the committee members carefully selected by the National Working Committee. The five man committee is led by Sir Sylvester Okonkwo as the chairman.

“We have about three aspirants in this exercise and they have been informed about the exercise today and they are: Joseph Akpan, DIG Ekpoudom, Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo, Godswill Obot Akpabio.”

One of the aspirants, Ekperikpe Ekpo, however, withdrew his aspiration and drummed support for Godswill Akpabio, even as he urged his delegates to vote Akpabio, whom he described as his father.

“Today, since my father (Akpabio) has joined the race, I plead with all my delegates to identify with him as I return all the delegates to vote for Senator Godswill Akpabio. With that, I have withdrawn my aspiration for the Senatorial seat,” he said.

However, DIG Ekpoudom, as well as Sir Joseph Akpan boycotted the primary and have not yet made public the reasons for their action.

Reacting to his victory, Senator Akpabio said, “I thank all the delegates across the Senatorial district for finding me worthy to represent you in the Senate.

APC: Muslim-Muslim Ticket No-Go Area — Lawal

The consideration of a Muslim president and a Muslim vice president in the country in 2023 is dead on arrival, Mr Babachir Lawal has said.

Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), stated this on Thursday during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He believes it is out of place for anyone to consider such a thought considering the peculiarity of the nation’s political atmosphere which is divided along regional and religious lines.

He cautioned his party, the APC not to field a Muslim candidate with a Muslim running mate.

“You can have the best ticket but if you don’t win the election, it’s a waste of time,” Lawal declared. “So, we must bear in mind that the vice (presidential candidate) is going to contribute to winning that election.”

“Extending that consideration to the Muslim-Muslim ticket, I live among the Christians, and I know that among the Christians, the question of Muslim-Muslim ticket is a no-go area; it is dead on arrival.

“Buhari himself, even at that time, had to drop this present presidential candidate because of that tension of a Muslim-Muslim ticket, and we have not seen anything in the country that has changed significantly to allow that to happen. On the contrary, it has worsened,” he added.

Following the emergence of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, a Muslim, as the party’s presidential candidate, there have been debates over who would be his running mate.

As the search for the ruling party’s vice-presidential candidate intensifies, the APC has been warned against nominating a Muslim for that position.

According to Lawal who is an ally of Tinubu, a political party is in the business of winning elections, and to win elections, one must get the votes to beat the opponents.

He stressed the need for the party to make the necessary considerations before choosing its vice president ahead of the coming polls.

“The religious divide has increased, the tribal division has increased, the regional division has increased,” said the former SGF. “So, it will be a good thing if APC will settle for a Muslim-Christian ticket because we know the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that is what they will do.”

Asked if he would like to be Tinubu’s running mate, he said, “God has not told me to aspire for that position. If you reach the level of Christianity that I am, you should be able to seek God’s opinion on everything that you do and get the indication.

“I will consider it. I have been in government before, and I have not seen any personal merit or advantage to me being in government. Since I left government, I have had a very good life and basically, a businessperson, and I have lived well. I am happy, my children are happy.”

Catholic Bishops: Nigeria Soaked In Blood, Dark Cloud Of Uncertainty Hangs Over Our Nation

President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, has raised the alarm that Nigeria is bleeding and soaked in blood.

Ugorji made the lamentation yesterday in Owerri, while speaking at the golden jubilee celebration of the Apostolic Administrator of Owerri Archdiocese, Most Rev. Anthony J. V. Obinna.

His words: “Nigeria is bleeding. Our land is soaked in blood. From North to South, East to West, blood is flowing like a river. Nigerians now live in fear and anxiety, as a dark cloud of uncertainty hangs over the nation.

“Nowhere is secure. Our homes, our highways, our institutions of learning and even our sacred precincts of worship centres, are all unsafe. Why has our country become so insecure while we have a government charged with the responsibility of defending the lives and property of one and all?

“Why has life become so cheap and short in Nigeria? Why must people who slaughter unarmed and law-abiding citizens in our communities be allowed to go scot-free?

“As we celebrate here today (yesterday), my heart returns to the bloody scene at St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, where many unarmed worshippers, including couples, women, little children and infants, were gruesomely murdered and many others brutally wounded on Pentecost Sunday.

“We continue to pray for the happy repose of the dead, the speedy recovery of the injured and the consolation of the bereaved. The killing of innocent worshippers is outrageous, sacrilegious, condemnable and totally unacceptable.”

In the cleric’s considered opinion: “It has become obvious that our country is under siege by Fulani militia, masquerading as herdsmen. A few weeks ago, it was the heartless killing of Deborah and the callous attack of churches in Sokoto.

“Recently, it was the kidnapping of the Prelate of the Methodist Church, Nigeria, who later disclosed that he and his two co-travellers, were abducted by armed Fulani, with the active connivance of the military. And last Sunday, the story was the bloody attack of the Church in Owo.”

Looking forward to the 2023 general elections, Archbishop Ugorji said: “We have watched with dismay, the recent cash-and-carry primaries in different political parties, primaries characterized by greed, graft, manipulation and exclusion.

“To say the least, what took place in some of those primaries, were disheartening and disgraceful. Given that genuine leadership is selfless service, involving enormous sacrifice, people who try to bribe their way to power must have ulterior and questionable motives.

“We must stand together to say no to money politics, terrorism, kidnapping and corruption in our country. One effective way of doing so is through exercising our franchise during general elections, by trooping out to vote.

“We must, therefore, shun apathy and indifference and stand together to elect only credible candidates with character, competence and capacity; candidates with proven records of achievements and who are known for putting the common good above their private and selfish interests.”

He therefore, urged Nigerians to ensure that they have their permanent voters card, in preparation for next year’s general elections, which he said, “is very crucial for the survival of this nation.”

Speaking also, Imo State Deputy Governor, Professor Placid Njoku, said that what is unique about Archbishop Obinna is that he is one man you cannot miss in a crowd.

His words: “He speaks truth to power and he has done this religiously and ceaselessly. Imo people, especially those in the corridors of power know that the fear of Archbishop Anthony J. V. Obinna, is the beginning of wisdom. He knows how to load meaning to words.”

Responding, Archbishop Obinna commended everyone that helped in making the celebration a huge success.

He said: “If there is anything you heard that I said or did, it was by the special grace of God. I am aware that I may not have satisfied the expectations of everyone, but please, keep praying for me.”

Present Your Running Mates In One Week, INEC Tells Atiku, Tinubu, Others

0
Professor Mahmood Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has asked the presidential and governorship candidates of the 18 registered political parties to pick and submit the lists of their running mates in the next eight days.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this on Thursday in Abuja at a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).

This means that the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu; and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and others have about a week more to nominate their vice presidential candidates to the commission.

According to him, while the conventions and primaries of candidates by political parties for the 2023 general elections end on Thursday, the nomination of the candidates and their running mates commenced on Friday and ends a week later.

“For the next one week from tomorrow, 10th June, all political parties are required to submit their list of candidates for national elections (presidential/vice presidential, senatorial and house of representatives) latest by Friday, 17th June.

“For state elections (governorship/deputy governorship and state houses of assembly), the list of candidates shall be uploaded from 1st to 15th July as already provided in the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2023 General Election already released by the Commission,” Yakubu said.

He also said that all political parties are required to upload the details of their candidates for each constituency to the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal (ICNP).

The INEC boss said that to achieve this objective, four officials recommended by each of the 18 political parties were trained in the procedure for uploading the nomination forms to the dedicated web portal.

“Confidential Access Codes to the portal have already been given to each Political Party to facilitate the uploading of its nominations.

“For emphasis, the commission wishes to remind Political Parties that only the names of candidates that emerged from democratic primaries as provided by Sec. 84 of the Electoral Act 2022 shall be submitted to the commission,” he said.

He added that the list of all presidential and governorship candidates must be accompanied by the names of their running mates (that is vice presidential and deputy governorship candidates) without which the nomination is invalid, warning that all nominations must be uploaded to the portal on/or before the deadlines.

He said, “All nominations must be uploaded to the portal on/or before the deadlines. The portal will automatically shut down at 6.00pm (1800hrs) on Friday, 17th June 2022 for national elections and 6.00pm (1800hrs) on Friday 15th July 2022 for state elections.

“With this innovation, the commission has eliminated the physical interface between party officials and INEC staff for the purpose of submitting the list of candidates for the 2023 general election.”

Yakubu said that a nomination centre has been set up at the commission’s headquarters to receive and process all nominations by political parties, including dedicated telephone lines to serve as help desk for any party that may need assistance.

Journalists later visited the nomination centre, where the INEC boss said that each of the 18 registered political parties were expected to submit 1,520 nominees or 27,360 total for all the parties.

Abia 2023: APP Guber Candidate, Mascot Kalu Takes Consultation To Lucky Igbokwe

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, United Nations Mayor of Peace and first runner up in the just concluded Peoples Democratic Party PDP gubernatorial primaries in Abia State, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe has played host to the governorship candidate of the Action People’s Party (APP) Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu.

Igbokwe received Chief Kalu barely 24 hours after pledging to support the winner of his party’s primaries Prof Uche Eliazar Ikonne to ensure that the PDP emerges victorious at the polls.

Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu who spoke with newsmen after the visit said he was at the country home of the businessman and politician to consult with him on how to forge a common front and move the state forward among other issues.

Chief Kalu said APP shares a common interest in youth empowerment with Igbokwe who is also a successful businessman, stating that it will be good to have him as a partner in progress

On the chances of his party winning elections in the state, Chief Kalu said people view the APP as a new party, but are quick to forget that the party is made up of people.

He argued that he is the most experienced among all those contesting for the Abia guber race having been in government before and therefore more prepared to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Abia if elected.

On his relationship with his brother, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, since his defection from the All Progressive Congress (APC), he said their relationship remains cordial. He stated that his brother was aware of the ill treatment meted out to him by his former party. He added that he consulted OUK before the move to his present party.
