As part of its efforts to fully enforce the ban on Okada operations in some parts of the state, the Lagos State Government has inaugurated an Anti-Okada Squad.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde made this known statement on Tuesday in Lagos.
He noted that the ban was in line with the Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL), 2018.
He explained that the Anti-Okada Squad will assist the police in enforcing the ban in the six local government areas and highways, major roads, and bridges
Oladeinde said the government was set to reinforce the ban on commercial motorcycles in the six LGAs and nine Local Council Development Areas.
The commissioner also stated at the inaugural ceremony, that the Special Anti-Okada Squad would be reporting to the Police.
Oladeinde urged the citizenry to collaborate with the government to combat their menace.
“It is the responsibility of the public to report any nefarious activities of the squad to the Ministry of Transportation.
“The public can report through the following help/complaint lines: 09038208154, 09034810153, 09033090826 and 09169655855.
“Such reports will help the government generate feedback on strategies for the protection of lives and property.
“Individuals arrested (i.e. riders and passengers) will be made to face the full wrath of the law in line with the provision of Section 46, sub-section 1, 2 & 3 of the Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL), 2018,” Oladeinde said.
The Commissioner reiterated that motorcycles impounded would be crushed in the public glare.
Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is the new manager of Championship side Burnley
Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has been appointed as the new manager of Burnley, the Championship club announced yesterday.
The retired Belgium international, 36, who was in charge at Anderlecht until last month, said he was “excited by the challenge ahead”.
“Burnley Football Club is a truly historic English side and it is an honour to be appointed first-team manager,” said Kompany, who takes over from caretaker Mike Jackson.
Jackson replaced long-serving boss Sean Dyche in April but could not save the club from relegation to the second-tier Championship.
“I’m looking forward to getting to work with the players and creating a positive, winning team for our fans when we return to Turf Moor,” said former defender Kompany.
“I’ve been impressed by the board’s vision for the club, which aligns with my own, and I look forward to playing my part as we enter an important season.”
Kompany spent 11 years at City, where he won 10 major trophies, including four Premier League titles.
He returned in 2019 to Anderlecht, the club where he launched his career, as a player-manager but relinquished matchday duties after a disastrous start to the season. He retired as a player in 2020 and took over as head coach.
Burnley chairman Alan Pace said the Clarets had signed up a “proven leader”.

The Nigerian Army has disclosed the dates for the recruitment screening exercise for applicants of the 83 Regular Intake 2022 for Non-Tradesmen and Women.
It also instructed applicants to visit its recruitment portal at https://recruitment.army.mil.ng to check the lists of shortlisted candidates.
The Army disclosed this in a public announcement, via its verified Twitter page late Tuesday, @HQNigerianArmy.
It tweeted, “The state recruitment screening exercise is scheduled to commence from 28 June – 11 July 2022 in all the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory Abuja.
“The Nigerian Army wishes to inform the general public & all applicants that applied for 83 Regular Recruits Intake 2022 for Non-Tradesmen & Women to visit the Nigerian Army Recruitment Portal https://recruitment.army.mil.ng to check the list of shortlisted candidates.”
It added, “Candidates who violate any instruction during the Recruitment Screening Exercise would be disqualified.”
The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria has warned political parties against presenting a Muslim- Muslim ticket in the upcoming 2023 general elections.
In a statement jointly signed on Tuesday by the Secretary – General of the organisation Very Rev. Fr. Zacharia Nyantiso Samjumi and the Director, Social Communications, Very Rev. Fr. Michael Nsikak Umoh, the CSN noted that while there are some things to be happy about, there are other aspects that are worrisome.
“The process for the 2023 General election in Nigeria has been initiated, and there are some things to be happy about; the passing of the Electoral Act 2022, which allows the use of electronic devices for accreditation and in the capturing and transmission of results; the prompt release of election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); the renewed confidence in the electoral process by the electorate, as demonstrated in the massive last minute turn out for voter registration amongst others,” the statement read in part.
“It is, however, disheartening to observe that the conduct of most of our politicians seems to be going from bad to worse as we witnessed a show of shame and heightened ugly culture of money politics during the recently held primaries.
“While all this is going on, we must not lose sight of the fact that the unity of this country has, over the years, been maintained by a delicate balancing of the religious and the regional”.
The CSN made reference to previous governments in Nigeria’s history, explaining that even in the “despotic military era, most juntas ensured a balance of the religious architecture in their regimes”.
While noting that a Muslim-Muslim ticket or a Christian-Christian ticket is not entirely bad, the CSN believes that such agenda’s may not work for the current situation of the country.
“For instance, we had Murtala-Obasanjo, Obasanjo-Yar’adua, Babangida-Ebitu Ukiwe, Abacha – Diya. This also applied to the heads of the various military formations and the different government parastatals like Customs, Immigrations, Finance, etc.
“Significantly, it was only during the General Muhammadu Buhari era as military Head of State (31 Dec. 1983 – 27 Aug. 1985) that we had a Muslim-Muslim military dictatorship.
“Similarly, only once did we have a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 1993 democratic elections, which featured Abiola-Kingibe ticket and turned out to be one of Nigeria’s freest and fairest elections. But that government never took off!
“Fast forward to 2022, 30 years later, some individuals have tried to suggest the Muslim-Muslim ticket for the Presidential election in a country like Nigeria that has unfortunately been badly polarized.
“Ordinarily, there would have been nothing wrong with a Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian ticket in a democratic dispensation if there is mutual trust and respect for the human person and where the overriding desire for seeking political office is the fostering of the common good. But one cannot really say so of our country at the moment”.
Political parties last week, produced their flagbearers for the forthcoming 2023 presidential elections.
Former Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged as the flagbearer for the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar emerged as the flagbearer for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Peter Obi will be flying the flag of the Labour Party among other contenders.
Troops of the 26 Task Force Brigade have reportedly rescued one Mary Ngoshe, who is believed to be one of the girls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, on April 14, 2014.
Boko Haram insurgents had invaded the school and abducted 276 students.
While over 50 escaped, 100 were later rescued but many of them were unaccounted for.
Some of the rescued students were later found with babies.
In a tweet on Wednesday, the army said during patrol in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno, Ngoshe was found with her child.
“Troops of 26 Task Force Brigade of the HQ Nigerian Army on patrol around Ngoshe in Borno State on 14 June 2022 intercepted one Mrs Mary Ngoshe and her son.”
“She is believed to be one of the abducted girls from GGSS Chibok in 2014. Further exploitation ongoing,” the tweet read.
The Chibok attack is the first coordinated assault on a school in Nigeria. After that incident, there have been mass kidnapping in different schools in the country.

Chief Amechi, who turns 94 years on Thursday this week, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government of Nigeria to release the detained leader of the Indigemous People of Biafra, IPOB, saying that his release is the only key to end the insecurity in the southeast.
Chief Amechi alleged that many criminals have formed different groups which IPOB had disowned, claiming to be working for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, while their real intention is to rob, intimidate, harass and dispossess people of their belongings, saying that once the pro-Biafra group leader is released, such groups will not have any reason to exist let alone claiming to be working and enforcing sit-at-home home while in actual sense they go about robbing people.
Chief Amechi described President Muhammadu Buhari, as a man with good conscience who is ready to respect him and many elders of the country but is surrounded by hawks and selfish politicians and appointees who do not allow him to take sound decision but deceive and mislead him with ethnic self serving ideas that are aggravating insecurity in Nigeria.
“The security challenge in southeast is the result of government refusal to do what I have asked them to do to help us to stop the killings in the southeast and Igbo land in general.
May be the insecurity in Igbo land suits them and their political purposes, otherwise they would have listened to my advice and those of other southeast and south-south and even southwest leaders.
“There is only one key to the solution to killings in Igbo land now, and that is the release of Nnamdi Kanu. If that young man is released, you will see all these criminals who spring up claiming to be agitating for the release of Nnamdi Kanu while their real intention is to rob innocent and unsuspecting people, will go into hiding because they will have nothing as reason to come out .
“IPOB has disowned them and have even taken measures to apprehend them but as you know, criminals will have their ways of operating and claiming one fake thing or the other, but they are simple criminals operating one way or the other.
“So, the only way the government can help me and a few of us who are really interested and who are nationalistic enough to be looking for real peace in Igbo land and Nigeria is to release that young man. I have asked the federal government to release and hand him over to me. At my age, I will be 94 on Thursday this week. So, at 94, if he misbehaves, let the government arrest me, even if I am 98, let them arrest me, let me go and die in prison but the government has refused to listen to me.
“President Muhammadu Buhari by my association with him is a good man and prepared to respect me but there are so many terrible people around him, who mislead him on this matter and other matters of national interest and they are not helping in the tomorrow of this country. Their plan is to wipe away the Igbo but it is not possible.
“It is not possible to wipe away the Igbo, nobody can do that. It is very impossible to do that because there must be remnants of the people if you try to wipe them out. There must be remnants of the people, an ordinary malnourished baby who was sent to a neighbouring country has now grown to become the president of that country, a “Quashikor” baby from Igbo land who was sent away to an African country during the civil war is now the president of that country. So, they cannot stop the handwork of God.
“So, I use this opportunity of my birthday coming up on Thursday to appeal to Mr. President to release Nnamdi Kanu, in trust for me, and watch him for a year while in my trust. If he misbehaves, let the government take me. In what way else can the President of the country know that the oldest nationalist they have in this country has made this pledge? In what way again can I assure him on this matter.?”
The Abducted Bishop of Jebba Anglican Diocese, Kwara State, Rev Aderogba Adeyinka, his wife, and the driver regained their freedom on Tuesday.
Daily Trust reported on Sunday that the victims were abducted after their vehicle developed a mechanical fault while travelling from Yewa, Ogun State to Jebba, Kwara State en route an isolated area along New Oyo/Ogbomoso Expressway.
Our correspondent reports that the abductors on Monday demanded a ransom of N50million from the church but it was not, however, ascertained if the ransom was paid.
Confirming their release to our correspondent in Ibadan on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso said they were released unhurt.
He said the state command of the Nigeria police force deployed its officers to rescue the victims.
Olafeso said, ” Massive deployment of Police personnel for the operation to rescue the victims and the domination of the entire area by the Police Tactical teams pressurised the abductors in freeing the victims.”
Baring last-minute change, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State will run on a joint ticket with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 Presidential election.
Daily Trust reliably gathered that the National Advisory Committee that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) set up to look into the report of an earlier committee has recommended the Rivers governor.
An inside source said the committee saddled with the task of picking the party’s Vice Presidential Candidate has agreed to allow Wike, who came second in the primaries, to run with Atiku.
“Rivers state Governor Nyesom Wike has been chosen by the committee. He was overwhelmingly voted for by the committee. Majority of the members see him as the ideal person to be the running mate to Atiku.
“You saw his showing at the primaries. The party leaders believe in his capacity and they have chosen him.”
The committee was said to have voted on the three names recommended by the General Aliyu Gusau committee with the Rivers Governor pulling sixteen votes.
The three names the source said were Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) and Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom).
Those at the meeting which was chaired by the Deputy National Chairman, North, Ambassador Umaru Damagun, were Governors Samuel Ortom (Benue), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi).
Others are former governors Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Liyel Imoke (Cross Rivers) Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo) and the minority leader of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Elumelu, among others.
Addressing members of the committee just before going into a close door session, National Chairman of the Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, had urged the meeting to come up with a conclusion “between tomorrow and Friday.”
The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has boasted that no political party can wrestle power from the ruling APC.
He said APC has brought so much development to the country that it would be difficult for any other political party to defeat it in any election.
Tinubu gave the assertion at the grand finale of the campaign activities of APC for the Ekiti Governorship election on Tuesday, at Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti.
He said going by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government’s developmental strides, it wuld be difficult for any political party to take over governance from the party at the moment or in the nearest future.
Tinubu, who allayed the fears of infighting in APC as a result of the just concluded presidential primary election, said it was making the party more stronger, stable and united now than before.
He assured Ekiti people of more development and dividends of democracy, if they vote for APC in the June 18 governorship election and the 2023 general elections.
“There is no home without a quarrel. Democracy is full of twist and thorns, hills and valleys; but we cannot burn down the house, I am not going to be a party to that. I am not only a builder, but a successful builder.
“President Muhammadu Buhari has asked me to deliver a message to APC members, particularly those in Ekiti to work for the unity, stability and progress of our dear party ahead of the 2023 elections.
“Use your Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) to vote in APC governorship candidate, Mr Biodun Oyebanji in the Saturday, June 18 election and that of the general elections.
“By this, you will continue to see progress in Ekiti and Nigeria at large that you are currently enjoying from APC-led government,” the former Lagos State governor assured.
Earlier, the National Chairman of APC, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, called on the electorate, particularly APC members, to vote en-masse for the party’s governorship candidate in the June 18 election.
Adamu said that Ekiti should vote for APC candidate, to succeed Gov. Kayode Fayemi, so that he could continue his good works and also stand for APC in all the coming elections.
The APC national chairman described the Ekiti governorship election as “a pointer election” for APC, admonishing the electorate to ensure victory for the party.
He said that, “After Bola Tinubu’s election, this is our first assignment; it is our hope that you ensure APC is victorious on Saturday, June 18.”
Also speaking in the same vein, Gov. Abubakar Baguda, Chairman, Ekiti Governorship Campaign Committee, urged the electorate to do the ruling party proud by voting for its candidate in the Saturday’s election.
He said: “We look forward to a successful election on Saturday, June 18. Vote Biodun Oyebanji, our party candidate to win.”
Earlier, Ekiti APC Chairman, Mr Paul Omotoso, said that the party hinged its mandate on the good works of Gov. Kayode Fayemi, achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari and the pedigree of its governorship candidate, Biodun Oyebanji.
He urged the people to vote for the APC candidate and ensure they protect their votes through all legitimate means.
Highpoint of the event was the presentation of the APC flag to Oyebanji and his deputy, Mrs Mojisola Afuye.

Hundreds of protesters comprising youths from Taraba state and civil society organisations on Tuesday stormed the national secretariat of the ruling APC in Abuja, demanding the adoption of David Sabo Kente, popularly known as DSK as the consensus governorship candidate of the party in the state.
This is also as the protesters warned the Senator representing Taraba South and former Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Emmanuel Bwacha to stop parading himself as the governorship candidate of the party in Taraba.

Addressing newsmen at the venue, the Director General of Pragmatic Elite for Asiwaju, Lady Rizqua Aduola said it is laughable that Sen. Bwacha is parading himself as the governorship candidate when primary election has not taken place.
She therefore urged the national and state leadership of the party to ensure that a credible and fair primary election is held to produce the party’s candidate ahead of the 2023 general elections.
While decrying that the state has not enjoyed dividends of democracy, Lady Aduola urged that David Sabo Kente be adopted to fly the flag of the party, adding that he has done a lot in human capital development projects, infrastructure and other developmental projects to affect the people’s lives.
