The House of Representatives has mandated the Committee on INEC to liaise with the Independent Electoral Commission over the extension of the Deadline of the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration following a motion raised by the spokesperson of the House and Member representing Bende Federal Constituency, Rep. Benjamin Kalu.

The member stated that as a result of the large number of eligible voters still unregistered evidenced by the large throngs of Nigerians at various registration centers which has caused so much congestion and also reports of shortages of voter registration machines as well as the shortage of adequate manpower and personnel at registration centers. It is imperative for INEC Nigeria to extend this deadline.

It has become imperative that the independent Electoral Commission extends the registration exercise by an extra period of 60 days from June 30, 2022, to enable more Nigerians to register.

Rep. Kalu emphasized that the right to vote is critically important to the health and legitimacy of our democracy, as well as electoral integrity and if nothing is done to improve the shortage of voter registration equipment and extend the deadline for registration, millions of Nigerians may be disenfranchised thus jeopardizing the integrity of the 2023 General Elections.

Following the resolution of the House for the Committee on INEC to meet with the commission on this extension and report back to the House after one week.

Messi Not In My List Of Greatest Players – Basten

Dutch great Marco van Basten has revealed that Argentina star, Lionel Messi is not in the top three of all-time greatest players.

According to the former AC Milan striker, the former Barcelona star, who has won seven Ballon d’Or, is not the game’s greatest.

“Pele, [Diego] Maradona, and [Johan] Cruyff are for me the three greatest players in history,” he told France Football.

“As a kid, I wanted to be like Cruyff. He was my friend. I miss him. Pele and Maradona were also incredible.

“Messi is also a great player, but Maradona always had more personality in a team. Messi is not the one who puts himself at the front to go to war.”

Basten is a Dutch football manager and retired professional player, who played for Ajax and AC Milan, as well as the Netherlands national team, as a striker.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, he scored 300 goals in a high-profile career, but played his last match in 1993, at the of age 28, due to an injury that forced his retirement two years later.[2] He was later the head coach of Ajax and the Netherlands national team.

Known for his close ball control, attacking intelligence, impeccable headers, and spectacular strikes and volleys, Van Basten was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 1992 and won the Ballon d’Or three times, in 19881989, and 1992. At club level, he won three Eredivisie titles and the Cup Winners’ Cup with Ajax, four Serie A titles, and three European Cups with Milan. With the Netherlands, Van Basten won UEFA Euro 1988 where he earned the Golden Boot, scoring five goals, including a memorable volley in the final against the Soviet Union

Group Urges APC Senatorial Candidate Not To Step Down For Sen. Lawan

Alhaji Bashir Sheriff Machina, who emerged as the senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ‘Zone C’ Senatorial District of Yobe State has been urged by concerned stakeholders of the party not to step down for incumbent Sen. Ahmed Lawan ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Recall that Lawan, who was an aspirant for the just concluded APC presidential primary election that produced Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as a candidate, has approached Machina to allow him to fly the senatorial flag.

Abba Maina Yusufari, leader of the stakeholders, in a press statement, said, “For keen observers of Yobe politics, no one is blind to the fact that our senatorial zone has enjoyed relative political peace and stability both at the House of Representative and even more at the senate with our brother, The Senate President, Dr. Ahmed Lawan been in the saddle for a record three times. By the end of 2023, our beloved brother Sen. Ahmed Lawan will be spending 24 years at the National Assembly ie 16 years as a senator, and 8 years as a member of the House of Representatives.”

He explained that while they remain committed and dedicated to propagating their cherished unity and stability, they also believe that for the interest of democracy, equity, justice and fair play, their brothers from the old Nguru Emirate which now constitutes the other three Emirates of Machina, Nguru, and Yusufari should equally have a feel of what their brother Emirate of Bade (the Senate President) have been enjoying in the last 24 years.

The statement further explained that it is against this backdrop that the stakeholders made bold to throw their support behind Machina to take over from Sen. Ahmed Lawan come 2023.

The statement stated that Machina was the candidate picked as a consensus candidate of the APC in the just-ended primary elections, adding that any attempt by Lawan to replace him from the seat will be a complete betrayal of the will of the people and a clog in the wheel of the peace, unity, and stability of the people.

The stakeholders noted that Machina’s mandate is from the people and not that of an individual, saying that the voice of the people is the voice of Allah.

They, therefore, cautioned that any attempt to silence the voice of the people by any individual either by his involvement of any type of machination or antics would be running against the concept of democracy and moral fairness.

The stakeholders stated that they are set to work hard and achieve the success of their candidate, Bashir Machina, and the victory of their party at all levels.

They explained that they do not subscribe, support, or encourage the thought of Bashir standing aside for the Senate President, Dr. Ahmed Lawan whom they supported to emerge as the presidential candidate of their party but Allah in his infinite wisdom made it different.

The group urged Dr. Ahmed Lawan to express thanks to the good people of Zone C for the support he has experienced from them since the revival of democracy in Nigeria in 1999 and not to be dragging a senate seat that he abandoned for an eye for the presidency, saying, “A piece of cake can’t be eaten twice in the same sitting.”
