Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi vowed to “rebuild everything” after visiting Ukraine’s war-torn city of Irpin on Thursday.

China President Xi Jinping reiterated his support for Moscow on “sovereignty and security” matters in a call with counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, upholding his backing for the countries’ partnership despite the global backlash against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking on his 69th birthday, Xi also pledged to deepen strategic coordination between the two countries, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.
A separate readout from the Kremlin said the two leaders stressed their countries’ relations were “at an all-time high” and reaffirmed their commitment to “consistently deepen the comprehensive partnership.”
The call is thought to be the second time the two have spoken since Russia invaded Ukraine. They last spoke just days after Moscow launched what it insists on calling a “special military operation.”
China, too, has refrained from referring to Russia’s actions as an invasion and has walked a fine line on the issue. It has portrayed itself as calling for peace and upholding the global order, while refusing to denounce Russia’s actions. It has also used its state media apparatus to mimic Kremlin lines blaming the United States and NATO for the crisis.
During Wednesday’s call, Xi stressed China had always “independently assessed the situation” in Ukraine and called for “all parties” to push for a “proper settlement of the Ukraine crisis” — echoing language he used in a March call with US President Joe Biden.
China is “willing to continue to play its role” in promoting a “proper solution” to Ukraine, he said.
The Kremlin’s summary of the call took this position a step further, saying: “the President of China noted the legitimacy of Russia’s actions to protect fundamental national interests in the face of challenges to its security created by external forces.”
China’s lack of censure for Russia’s war in Ukraine has further strained Beijing’s tense relationship with the US and its allies.
US officials have repeatedly called on countries to condemn Russia’s actions and warned their Chinese counterparts against aiding Moscow. During the March call between Xi and Biden, the US President spelled out consequences if China gave material support, following US intelligence that Moscow asked Beijing for military assistance — a claim both deny.
Trade ties
Wednesday’s call was also a chance for Putin and Xi to check in on a growing trade relationship.
Earlier this year, weeks before the Russian invasion, the two leaders in a face-to-face meeting said their countries had a “no limits” partnership and pledged to boost trade.
“Since the beginning of this year, bilateral relations have maintained a sound development momentum in the face of global turbulence and transformations,” Xi said in the Wednesday call.
“The Chinese side stands ready to work with the Russian side to push for steady and long-term development of practical bilateral cooperation,” Xi said, pointing to the “steady progress” of their trade ties and the opening last week of the first cross-border highway bridge over the Amur River.
The two agreed to expand cooperation in energy, finance, manufacturing and other areas, “taking into account the global economic situation that has become more complicated due to the illegitimate sanctions policy pursued by the West,” the Kremlin readout said.
The two countries also pledged to work together to strengthen communication and coordination in international bodies such as the United Nations — where the two often vote as a bloc.
“China is also willing to work with Russia to promote solidarity and cooperation among emerging market countries … and push for the development of the international order and global governance towards a more just and reasonable direction,” Xi said, in a comment that hit on the countries’ shared aim of pushing back against what they view as the global hegemony of the United States.
Birthday greetings
The call was not the first time that Xi and Putin — two strongmen drawn together by mutual distrust of the West — have had engagements on each others’ birthdays.
In 2013, Xi presented Putin with a birthday cake and the two drank vodka together to mark the Russian leader’s 61st birthday during a conference in Indonesia. Xi later celebrated his 66th birthday during a 2019 summit in Tajikistan with Putin, who surprised him with ice cream, cake and champagne.
Their personal relationship, in which Xi has described Putin as his “best and bosom friend” is also thought to bolster the dynamics of their strengthening rapport on the national level.
In its summary of the two leaders’ latest call, the Kremlin noted the conversation was held in a “traditionally warm and friendly atmosphere.”
The founder of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has alleged that Mr. Peter Obi did not show appreciation for the role he (Mbaka) played in restoring him as governor of Anambra State after his impeachment.
The Enugu Catholic priest, claimed that he played a major role in keeping the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate in the Anambra State Government House during his tenure.
ABN TV recalls that Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, who took over office on March 17, 2006, was impeached by the state House of Assembly after seven months in office.
Obi had several times claimed that he was impeached by the state lawmakers for allegedly refusing to mismanage the state’s fund.
But Mbaka who believes that the LP candidate is stingy and would not emerge as President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2023, said Obi failed to reciprocate his gesture of aiding him to retain the governorship seat despite the impeachment.

A major air accident was averted when an Overland Airways aircraft made an emergency landing at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos, from Ilorin International Airport in Kwara State.
The incident happened on Wednesday night when one of the engines caught fire mid-air as the plane was approaching the airport.
33 passengers onboard the flight were safely disembarked at the international Wing.
It was learnt that the Pilot-in-Command of the ATR-42 Aircraft had declared a May Day which in aviation parlance implies an emergency situation while authorities at the airport had activated all emergency procedures as the crew tried to manoeuvre the plane.
The airline in a statement confirmed the incident, saying the passengers remained calm all through the process.
The airline said, “Overland Airways wishes to inform the general public that its flight OF1188 from Ilorin to Lagos experienced an unusual high turbine temperature on one of its engines today, Wednesday June 15, 2022 around 7:50pm.
“This occurred in the approach phase of flight and the aircraft landed very safely as the Crew skillfully implemented their standard procedures for such abnormal situations.
“All 33 passengers remained calm through the process and safely disembarked row by row in accordance with post-COVID-19 procedures after the aircraft came to a halt on the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos runway 18 Right. No passenger was hurt in any way.
“Overland Airways salutes the professional interventions of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Accident Investigation Bureau Nigeria (AIB-N) which were very prompt and reassuring.
“Overland Airways regrets any inconvenience to its passengers and assures the travelling public of its full commitment to the safety of its services and passengers.”
The family of Abia-based journalist, Mr. Chuks Onuoha, who was kidnapped by armed men who gained entry into his home in Ohuhu Umuahia, on Tuesday night, has appealed for assistance to rescue the head of the family from his abductors.
His abduction is coming barely a week after Ohuhu Welfare Union had raised alarm over the movement of stranger elements suspected to be herders inside forests in the community.
Wife of the victim, Mrs Udodirim Onuoha, who made the appeal when members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abia State, visited the family on Wednesday, also appealed to his captors to free him.
Narrating how the incident happened, Mrs Onuoha said that her husband was Kidnapped by three armed men who slipped into their house at about 10.45pm on Tuesday while he was resting after returning from work.
According to the visibly devastated mother of five, she was also in the sitting room with her husband when the Kidnappers sneaked in through the back door.
She said that the leader of the three-man gang immediately pointed a gun at her husband and ordered him to surrender all his phones and ATM cards.
Mrs Onuoha said that the Kidnappers later took her husband away in his jeep along with his two mobile phones and ATM card.
She, however, added that before they left, the kidnappers gave a stern warning that the family should not involve security agencies if they wanted her husband to return alive.
Mrs Onuoha confirmed that the abductors later contacted the family and demanded a ransom of N10 million but later reduced it to N2 million.
She said that the family had been traumatized since the horrible scene, and appealed to the captors to let him go for the sake of the family.
Chairman of Abia NUJ, Comrade Ndukwe while comforting Mrs. Onuoha and members of her family, expressed shock over the incident.
He encouraged the family to be firm as efforts are being made to secure the release of the former SUN Correspondent.
Kidnapping for ransom has been on the increase across Abia State in recent times.
In the last three weeks, no fewer than seven persons have been abuducted in the state including the Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Eminence Samuel Uche.
A medical doctor, Professor Uwadinachi Iweha who was Kidnapped on June 6 in front of his house is still in captivity.
Doctors in the state, Tuesday announced the withdrawal of their services both in public and private hospitals citing insecurity.
A copy of the security alert by Ohuhu Welfare Union signed by the Publicity Secretary, Enwereuzo Ogbonna, read in part: ”This is to confirm to ndi Ohuhu, non-indegenes and neighbouring Communities that for some days now, there have been reports to the Union, of the sightings of Fulani stranger elements and movements within and around the Isi Okata environs.
“This morning, the President General acting on this continuous information ordered the Commander of the Ohuhu Vigilante Group to mobilize his men in conjunction with the Community vigilante and gallant youths of Umuawa, Umuda Isingwu and Umuire Communities and move into the site of the reported breach to authenticate the credibility or otherwise of the information coming to the Welfare Union.
“The vigilantes got to Isi Okota and actually saw this invaders inside the forest, who on sighting our Community vigilantes fled across the Ikwu river into the Ibeku flank of our neighbourhood under the hot pursuit of our vigilantes.
“While the Welfare Union is engaging the Police and relevant security agencies to address these threats, the welfare Union is using this opportunity to ask all Ohuhu indigenes to be on alert and look out for strange elements and suspicious movements and activities within all our Communities.
“Ndi Ohuhu and all our inhabitants are also advised to curtail late evening movements and activities.
“By this release, the President General is ordering all villages and Communities in Ohuhu to ensure a 24 hours Vigilante service around all our villages and borders.
“Our Ibeku brothers are also by this release advised of the presence of these nefarious elements within their borders.
“The Union is desirous to work together with our Ibeku development Union, Umuopara, and all adjoining clan governments to stem the incursions of these ungodly bandits into our communities and keep our homeland safe.
“We are assuring ndi Ohuhu that the Union is doing everything within it’s powers to ensure that ala Ohuhu remains safe for everyone.
“The Union also calls on prominent sons and leaders of Ohuhu and indeed Umuahia, in general, to come together as stakeholders and engage this looming threat before our land is overrun in an orgy of criminality and violence as we have seen in some communities in the South East.”
But when contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO Geoffrey Ogbonna said police had no report about the Kidnapped journalists.
On the alleged security alert by Ohuhu Welfare Union, the Police Spokesman said the union was also yet to formally lodge any complaint before the police.
Meanwhile, the State Government will today ( Thursday) inaugurate a special taskforce on Security.
