An iconic Hong Kong floating restaurant has sunk, just days after it was towed out to sea en route to an unspecified destination.
Jumbo Kingdom, a three-story vessel that was at one time the world’s largest floating restaurant, was towed away by tugboats last Tuesday after nearly half a century moored in the city’s southwest waters.
The restaurant’s main boat was traveling to an undisclosed shipyard when it capsized on Saturday after meeting “adverse conditions” near the Paracel Islands (also known as the Xisha Islands) in the South China Sea, Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises Limited said in a statement Monday.
The boat sank more than 1,000 meters (3,280 feet), making salvage work “extremely difficult,” the statement said.
It added that Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises was “very saddened by this accident,” and was working to gather more details. No crew members were injured.
The news was met with consternation online, with many Twitter users bemoaning the inelegant end to one of Hong Kong’s most recognized historic icons. Some posted art depicting the restaurant underwater, while others shared farewell messages.
Others saw the sinking ship as a darkly comic metaphor for Hong Kong’s alleged fortunes, as the city — still largely shut off from the rest of the world — clings on to pandemic restrictions following several years of political turmoil.
The 260-feet long (about 80 meters) restaurant was the main boat of Jumbo Kingdom, which included an older and smaller sister restaurant boat, a barge for seafood tanks, a kitchen boat, and eight small ferries to transport visitors from nearby piers.
In its golden days, Jumbo Kingdom starred in many Hong Kong and international movies and hosted visiting luminaries including Queen Elizabeth II, Jimmy Carter and Tom Cruise.
It was famous for its lavish Imperial-style façade, plentiful neon lights, massive commissioned paintings in the stairwell and its colorful Chinese-style motifs — including a golden throne in the dining hall.
But as the fishing population in the island’s southern harbor dwindled, the restaurant group became less popular, and had been suffering a deficit since 2013. The Covid-19 pandemic dealt the final blow, with the restaurant closed until further notice in 2020.

Japan’s ban on same-sex marriage is not unconstitutional, a court has ruled, dealing a blow to gay couples and activists seeking greater rights for the LGBTQ community.

The Osaka district court on Monday dismissed a lawsuit in which three same-sex couples were seeking compensation from the government of 1 million yen (about $7,400) per person, arguing the lack of recognition of same-sex marriages violated their constitutional right to equality.
But the court sided with the government, ruling that under the constitution the definition of marriage did not extend to partnerships between people of the same gender, public broadcaster NHK reported.
The ruling of the Osaka court dashed the hopes of gay rights activists who are pressuring the government to rethink its opposition to same-sex marriage.
The Osaka court’s ruling came in stark contrast to a historic judgment by the Sapporo district court in Japan’s northern Hokkaido prefecture in March 2021.
On that occasion, the Sapporo court ruled the government’s failure to recognize same-sex marriage violated the constitutional right to equality — though it too had dismissed a similar claim for damages.
Japan remains the only Group of Seven (G7) country that has not recognized either same-sex civil unions or same-sex marriage at a national level.
However, some parts of the country issue “partnership certificates” that grant some rights to same-sex couples, such as allowing them to rent properties and have hospital visitation rights.

Same-sex marriages in Asia

Japan, where homosexuality has been legal since 1880, is relatively liberal compared to some Asian nations.
For example, gay sex remains illegal in Singapore despite growing calls to change the colonial-era law.
India’s Supreme Court ruled in 2018 that gay sex was no longer a criminal offense. However, the country does not recognize same-sex marriages.
China also does not recognize same-sex marriages despite growing awareness of LGBTQ issues in the country. While there are no laws against same-sex relationships in China, it remains a taboo topic that is routinely scrutinized and even censored on social media.
Some corners of Asia have seen recent progress on the issue, however.
In 2019, the self-ruled island of Taiwan became the first place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage.
And this month, Thailand edged closer to becoming the first place in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex unions when lawmakers passed four different bills aiming to provide greater rights to gay couples, such as the ability to adopt children and manage assets jointly.

The US is in talks with Canada and other allies around the world about curbing Russian energy revenues by imposing a price cap on Russian oil, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in Toronto on Monday.

“We are talking about price caps or a price exception that would enhance and strengthen recent and proposed energy restrictions by Europe, the United States, the UK and others, that would push down the price of Russian oil and depress [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s revenues, while allowing more oil supply to reach the global market,” she said, Reuters reported.

Yellen said these moves shouldn’t adversely impact low-income and developing countries.

“We think a price exception is also an important way to prevent spillover effects to low income and developing countries that are struggling with high costs food and energy,” she said.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said earlier that Russia planned to restore its oil production as much as possible by the end of June, following a slump in March and April amid sanctions. He conceded that production could decline to 480-500 mln tons in 2022 from 524 mln tons a year before. Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov has said Russia could lose up to 17% og oil production in 2022 due to sanctions.

Rivers United Technical Manager, Stanley Eguma, has exclusively told reporters that if his side eventually emerge winners of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, it would be a perfect reward for Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, for his support, inspiration and motivation to the club.

Pep Guardiola has opened up on the possibility of Bernardo Silva joining Barcelona this summer.

During the announcement of Barcelona’s charity game against Manchester coming up on 24th August, Barcelona President, Juan Laporta, joked that Silva would be on Barca’s side during the game.

Pep Guardiola, who was also in attendance during the announcement, responded by saying that on August 24 at the Camp Nou, City will be “Bernardo Silva and ten more”.

The charity match on August 24 at Camp Nou, is to raise funds for ALS research. And later in the press conference, the Manchester City boss opened up on the true picture of Silva’s future.

Guardiola said he hates forcing players who do not want to stay at the club, even though he wants Silva to stay at City.

“Two clubs like Barcelona and Manchester City, the names are varied, there’s a lot of them,” said Guardiola

“Right now I think Bernardo will continue with us. Our goal, as a club, is for him to stay with us, but I have always said I don’t want players that don’t want to be with us.

Bayern Munich have told Robert striker, Lewandowski that has no choice but to remain with the club this summer.
This is despite the player sending messages to the Bavarians and the optimism from Barcelona about signing the player.

Former President of the club, Uli Hoeness, told Sport1 that Bayern Munich are relying on Lewandowski for next season.

He said that the Poland international is part of the new team being intensively worked on by Bayern Munich, adding that the player and his agent are angry because they cannot get what they wanted.

Super Eagles and Rangers defender Calvin Bassey has explained why he believes he can play as a striker if given the opportunity.

Bassey was drafted from his preferred left-back position into central defence at Rangers last season.

The youngster was outstanding in his makeshift position, as he helped Rangers to the Europa League final and also the Scottish Cup title.

And speaking on NFF TV, Bassey stated that he will play anywhere even as a striker if he is asked to by his coach.

“In terms of my preferred position for me I just like to play football. Wherever the manager puts me even as a striker, I’m going to go there and give everything I’ve got. 

“And sometimes it depends on what my coach wants from me, we’ve seen many players (James) Milner for example, they change his position sometimes he plays centre midfield, sometimes he plays on the left. It just depends who you are playing against and what the manager wants from you.”

Bassey got his first call up to the Super Eagles under former coach Gernot Rohr but never had the opportunity to play.

He eventually made his debut in the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoffs first leg game away to Ghana in March.

And reflecting on his first invitation to the Eagles, Bassey confessed that he was shocked.

“I was shocked, I couldn’t believe it,” he admitted. “I just felt so privileged and blessed. I thank God everyday because God is our strength. So I just feel blessed and privileged to be here and to represent my great nation.

“Playing for Nigeria, I don’t think I can put into words. We have over 200 million people behind our back everytime we go on to the pitch. And just being able to make the 25 players in the squad representing them is a dream come through. We’ve got important games coming up I just want to help the team anyway I can.”

And on his thoughts about the current crop of players in the Eagles: ”One thing you can never doubt with Nigeria is the talent, we have some of the top young talents in the world. We have Chukwueze, Osimhen.

“I know there is always high expectations because we always have talents in the Nigeria squad so we will take each game as they come.”

Golden Eaglets head coach Nduka Ugbade has expressed confidence that his side will subdue Cote d’Ivoire in the semi-finals of the U-17 WAFU B on Tuesday.

The last four of the regional qualifying tournament will kick off today (Tuesday) with Nigeria, hosts Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso vying for the two available tickets for next year’s U-17 AFCON in Algeria.

The first semi-finals is between the Eaglets and Cote d’Ivoire inside the Cape Coast Stadium.

While the second semi-final clash will see Ghana battle Burkina Faso.

And speaking ahead of the tie with Cote d’Ivoire, Ugbade described it as the most important match for his team.

“By the special grace of God we will subdue Ivory Coast and qualify,” Ugbade said on Brila FM.”Because like I said to them the trophy is not important you must win the last match to win the trophy and this is not the last match this is the most important match, win this one and you are assured to get to the finals in Algeria.”

To get to this stage the Eaglets beat Ghana 4-2 in the opening game in Group A before overcoming Togo 3-1 in their second group game.

The U-17 AFCON in Algeria will serve as qualifiers for the World Cup in Peru.
