The 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi ll, has debunked a statement, making the rounds endorsing the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

The viral post had Sanusi blasting the All Progressives Congress presidential candidates (APC), Bola Tinubu, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar, describing them as unfit to be Nigeria’s next president.

But, the Chief of Staff to the deposed Emir of Kano, Munir Sunusi Bayero, in a statement on Monday said Sanusi did not write the viral post.

The statement read: “Our attention has been drawn to an article circulating the online media space analyzing the motives of the three presidential candidates in the 2023 elections.

“We would like to emphatically state that this was not authored by His Highness, Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II as is being widely attributed.”

Bayero noted that the former CBN Governor does not bear Sanusi Lamido Sanusi anymore.

“Consequently, given the need to set the records straight, we hereby state for the benefit of those unaware that the Khalifa is not officially called Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, but as HH Muhammad Sanusi II.”

He admonished readers to scrutinize any information on social media to avoid false and misleading information.

“While we restate that we have no affiliation to the article itself in any way, we staunchly continue to place our faith and trust in Allah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala) to continue guiding His Highness Sanusi as an elder statesman in his socio-economic Advocacy for all Nigerians, Africans and humanity in general,” the statement concluded.

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has said that Senate President Ahmad Lawan participated in the Yobe North Senatorial Primary election.

Abdullahi made this known while fielding questions from State House correspondents.

Recall that while Senator Lawan was battling for the APC presidential ticket, Bashir Machina was declared the winner of the Yobe North Senatorial District primary election.

However, reports had it that the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Yobe North Senatorial District has replaced the name of Bashir Machina with that of Lawan.

Bashir Machina had in reaction, insisted that he still remains the substantial candidate of the APC in the Senatorial district to the 2023 elections.

When asked how Lawan emerged as a senatorial candidate, Adamu insisted that Lawan participated within the timeline.

He said: “Don’t get yourself in the court of law. Is it that you were told they are saying it?

“I don’t have time for negativities. I don’t just have time for that. If you face me with positives, I have time for all of that. I will stand here and answer all of your questions.

“I cannot respond to every speculation, particularly when they are negative, especially when they are by mischief-makers.

“Is there any law that says when you contest an election and lost, you shouldn’t contest another one?

“Go and find out from the person who is responsible for organising the primary. I have done my bit.

“I do know, in my honour, that he did participate within the timeline,” he said.

Ossai Success, an aide to Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has stated that superstar Burna Boy should apologize for the shooting at Club Cubana, Lagos, instead of ‘displaying rudeness’.

The singer’s police escorts were alleged to have shot and wounded two fun-seekers at the club on June 8, 2022, after one of their partners turned down his offer to join him and his friends in their VIP section.

The lady in question had faulted the club and Burna Boy’s “lack of remorse or accountability” for the incident which almost claimed two lives.

A few days after the incident, Burna Boy tweeted, “Nigerian Social media can say BURNA BOY started Boko haram, e no go shock me.”

However, Okowa’s Special Assistant on Media took to his verified Facebook page on Tuesday to note that the singer should publicly apologize for the incident.

He wrote, “Burna Boy should apologize for the shooting at Cubana Night Club publicly. As a public figure, it’s your responsibility to take the blame and apologize whether you are wrong or right.

“Burna Boy keeping silent over what happened at Cubana club shows the pride in him. While investigations are ongoing, he should apologize to us all.

“What happened that night did happen because he was there and the officers attached to him did the shooting, so it’s paramount he tender his apology instead of displaying rudeness.

“Victims are in hospital and yet his pride doesn’t want to allow him to apologize. Burna Boy has no justification for not apologizing.”

Success had earlier noted that another singer, Portable, should visit an alcohol and drug rehabilitation centre, following reports of violence.

VP Yemi Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has stated that government plans and policies would impact significant impacts on Nigerians if professional bodies played active roles in their implementation.

Osinbajo, who made a reference to the Federal Government’s social housing scheme, said the programme would significantly impact more Nigerians if professional bodies such as the Nigerian Institute of Architects played an active role.

This was contained in a statement signed by his media aide, Laolu Akande, on Tuesday, where the Vice President was quoted as stating this when members of the NIA, led by its President, Arc. Enyi Ben-Eboh paid him a courtesy visit at the Presidential Villa on Monday.

“When we developed the Economic Sustainability Plan, it was part of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We were very concerned about social housing, not just as a way of providing cheap housing for the poorest among us, but also as a way of providing jobs and job opportunities. But I am not so sure we got much response from [the] NIA,” Osinbajo stated.

“One of the advantages of professional bodies like yours is to make it possible for a vast majority of our people to get decent housing, for instance, finding the cheapest ways of building 300,000 affordable houses.

“For the vast majority of Nigerians, the relevance of our professional institutions, especially when it comes to the design and building, must be felt when it comes to the basics. I certainly will like to see what sorts of contributions the NIA will make in developing policies around social housing.”

In his remarks, the President of the NIA, Ben-Eboh, while soliciting Osinbajo’s support for the body, commended the Federal Government for its contribution to the growth of Nigerian professionals by signing Executive Order 02 in 2017.

He said, “Without doubt, Executive Order 2 laid the foundation for the gradual take-off of our nation’s envisioned industrial diversification and self-sustaining economy with 100 per cent in-country capacity utilization and development.”

Ben-Eboh also announced that Osinbajo had been selected as the grand patron of the NIA’s Integrated Infrastructure Conference scheduled for October 2022.

Other members of the NIA delegation included 1st Vice President, Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi; 2nd Vice President, Arc. Sani Saulawa; 3rd Vice President, Arc. Chioma Wogu-Ogbonna; General Secretary, and former President of the Institute, Arc. Chike Chamberlain Ibeanu; former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Obong Victor Attah; among others.

The Senate, NigeriaThree Senators on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have resigned their membership of the party.

The lawmakers are Senators Ahmad Babba Kaita (Katsina North), Lawal Yahaya Gumau (Bauchi South), and Francis Alimikhena (Edo North).

Whilst Babba Kaita and Alimikhena defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Gumau, on the other hand, defected to the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

The notice of their resignation and defection was contained in three separate letters read during plenary by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday.

Babba Kaita’s letter read, “As Senator representing Katsina North Senatorial District, I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), and registration declaration for the Peoples Democratic Party.

“My resignation from the APC was born out of the marginalisation of critical stakeholders by the State Government and Leadership of the Party in Katsina State, where small people like me do not have a chance.

“I have since been joyful and graciously accepted into the fold of the Peoples Democratic Party in Katsina State.”

On his part, Senator Alimikhena, explained that his decision to resign from the APC was as a result of “continuing and multifaceted crisis that has bedeviled the APC”, especially in his Senatorial District, “that has created parallel executives that has undermined internal discipline, cohesion and focus.”

The defection by the three lawmakers reduces the total number of APC Senators from 70 to 67 in the upper chamber, according to a statement by the Special Assistant (Press) to the President of the Senate, Dr. Ezrel Tabiowo.

“To get involved with a child as young as 16 years is not something I and the association I represent, would stand for.

“This is a very sad development involving a member of ours, but I wouldn’t want to comment any further on this case,” he said.

Russian Nobel Laureate Sells Medal For $103.5M To Benefit Ukraine Kids

Dmitry Muratov, the Russian editor-in-chief of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, on Monday auctioned off his Nobel Peace Prize gold medal for $103.5 million to benefit children displaced by the war in Ukraine.

The medal was sold to an as yet unidentified phone bidder at the sale in New York organized by Heritage Auctions.

The sale was a spirited one, with lots of applause and bidders egging one another on to increase the total. Muratov was seen recording videos of the bidding screen and those in the room.

When the final bid came in, at tens of millions of dollars more than the previous offer, many in the room expressed shock, including Muratov himself.

“I’m just like you in that regard,” he told reporters, speaking through a translator after the sale.

Muratov won the prize in 2021 alongside journalist Maria Ressa of the Philippines, with the committee honoring the pair “for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression.”

He was among a group of journalists who founded Novaya Gazeta in 1993 after the fall of the Soviet Union.

This year, it became the only major newspaper left voicing criticism of President Vladimir Putin and his tactics inside and outside the country.

In March, more than a month into Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, Novaya Gazeta suspended operations in Russia, after Moscow adopted legislation providing for tough jail terms against anyone criticizing the Kremlin’s bloody military campaign.

In April, Muratov was assaulted on a train when a person threw oil-based paint mixed with acetone on him, causing his eyes to burn.

Muratov’s medal was available to bidders both in person and online, with all proceeds going to UNICEF’s Humanitarian Response for Ukrainian Children Displaced by War.

When asked why he chose UNICEF as the recipient of the funds, Muratov said: “It’s critical to us that that organization does not belong to any government. It can work above the government. There are no borders for it.”

Since 2000, six of Novaya Gazeta’s journalists and collaborators have been killed in connection with their work, including investigative reporter Anna Politkovskaya.

Muratov dedicated his Nobel prize to their memory.

On Monday, he hailed the persistence of journalists as an important check on governments, and one way that war can be prevented.

“So no matter how many times each one of us wants to turn in our notice and quit, we must stay in our jobs,” he told reporters.

Speaking in a video released by Heritage in connection with the sale, the prominent journalist said that winning the Nobel “gives you an opportunity to be heard.”

“The most important message today is for people to understand that there’s a war going on and we need to help people who are suffering the most,” he said.
