Lukaku Set To Complete Inter Milan Return Today

Intetr Miilan are reportedly close to signing Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku on a season-long loan deal.

Ever since Lukaku told Italian media in December that he was unhappy with life at Stamford Bridge, there has been constant speculation regarding the player’s future.

Having netted three goals during the run-in, including a double against Wolverhampton Wanderers, it was suggested that the Belgium international may remain in West London.

However, it soon became apparent that the 29-year-old was angling for a return to Inter, the club that he left in a £97.5m transfer last summer.

According to Italian journalists Gianluca Di Marzio and Fabrizio Romano, the relevant parties have settled on an agreement for a loan switch to occur as soon as possible.

President Buhari Nominates Mohammed Shehu As RMAFC Chairman

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday urged the Senate to screen and confirm Alhaji Mohammed Shehu for appointment as the Chairman, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

Buhari’s request for the confirmation of Shehu was contained in a letter read at plenary by Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

The letter reads in part: “In accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, I am pleased to forward for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Mohammed Bello Shehu, as the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

“It is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual expeditious manner.”

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the European Union has charged Nigerians to get their Permanent Voter Cards, register and vote on the election day.

The EU gave the charge on Tuesday via a statement issued by its press officer, Modestus Chukwulaka, pledging to support the mobilisation of voters to fully participate in the polls.

The EU delegation said it will embark on the “Youth Vote Count Campaign 2.0, organised in collaboration with INEC, YIAGA and other civil society organisations in the framework of EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN).”

“As Nigeria will go to the polls for its seventh general elections since the return to civilian rule, the EU Delegation encourages eligible voters, and youth in particular, to register and collect their PVCs (Permanent Voter Card) and to turn out on election day!” the statement partly read.

It said a mega-concert will take place on Saturday 25th June in Abuja with the participation of celebrities and influencers to encourage voters’ participation, following one of such which was held in Lagos on 11th June.

On the Ekiti election, the union congratulated all stakeholders and the people of the state on a largely peaceful poll.

This is even as it commended Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on improved logistics, including early deployment of personnel and essential materials in the majority of the polling units, better functioning of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and efficient electronic transmission of polling unit results to INEC’s results viewing portal.

While noting that the improvement augurs well for the 2023 general elections, the EU encouraged voters, and in particular the youth and women, to sustain their participation beyond the elections by holding candidates accountable for their campaign promises.

President Muhammadu Buhari has accused a secessionist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra of vandalising oil pipelines and other infrastructure.

Buhari, who stated this in an interview with Bloomberg, said although his administration last year began moves to remove fuel subsidy, it discovered that the moves were not tenable.

IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, in an interview with The PUNCH, dismissed the President’s allegation that the group was vandalising pipelines, describing the claim as laughable.

Founded in 2012 by Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB has been agitating for the restoration of the Republic of Biafra.Kanu, a British Nigerian political activist is a fierce critic of the Nigerian government and also known for his advocacy of the contemporary Biafran independence movement.

On June 29, 2021, the Nigerian government announced that Kanu had been rearrested. He was subsequently charged to court again and remanded in the custody of the department of state services.

In the interview with Bloomberg, Buhari lamented that criminality was hindering oil production, adding that the country had stepped up its efforts in combating oil theft and vandalism.

He stated, “Criminality and terrorism in oil-producing regions hamper production, and it would help if our western allies designated IPOB as a terrorist group, given their complicity in damage to pipelines and infrastructure.”

He said government efforts in combating oil theft were succeeding

“These efforts are making an impact: wells that had to be closed due to criminality have now re-opened. With these efforts, OPEC has raised our quota for next month.

“We have invested in our security forces, including the $1 billion military deal with the U.S. for the acquisition of A-29 Super Tucano aircraft.

Last month, The PUNCH reported that Nigeria was unable to produce about 22.658 million barrels of crude oil valued at N1.22tn in the first quarter of this year due to its persistent inability to meet the crude oil production quota approved for the country by OPEC.

Responding to Buhari’s allegation, IPOB spokesman, Powerful, stated that it was “funny” and “laughable.”

He said the group’s only interest was the actualisation of the “Biafra freedom struggle” and nothing else.

He stated IPOB’s leadership was studying Buhari’s comments and would respond to him appropriately.

A foremost Igbo intellectual body, Akeanga, described as faulty, the demand by the President that the West should designate IPOB as a terrorist group.

Similarly, a Bill for a Law to Establish the Abia State University of Medical and Health Management Technology sponsored by Hon Barr A.C. Thomas Nkoro, Member representing Obingwa West State Constituency passed second reading.

The sponsor of the Bill, Hon Nkoro led the debate and after contributions from other House members, the Speaker committed the Bill to the Committee of the Whole for future legislative action.

Abducted Train Passengers Must Be Brought Home Alive - Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed increased efforts through kinetic and non-kinetic means to bring the case of the kidnapped railway passengers in Kaduna State to a closure.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, announced the president’s directive Tuesday in a statement titled “President Buhari Directs Urgency in Dealing with Kidnapped Railway Passengers’ Case”.

Passengers were abducted when bandits attacked a train plying Abuja-Kaduna route on March 28, 2022.

Tukur Mamu, a Kaduna-based publisher who negotiated the release of 11 of the passengers, had on Monday said some of the victims had been bitten by snakes.

Providing an update on Tuesday, the presidential spokesman said the government had continued to review the issue of the passengers and making all efforts to trace and bring back the 51 or more still being held in custody.

Shehu said upon the President’s approval, the government had continued on the two-lane approach, kinetic and non-kinetic, to secure the passengers’ safe release.

He said, “The President’s clear directive” on the issue was that the hostages must be brought home alive, stressing that the country’s military and security agencies were aware of their duty to the nation and were determined to give effect to the President’s charge with increased urgency.

“The kidnappers made a demand for the release of their own children and upon the settlement of that issue, they let go eleven of the victims, even though more were expected.

“The setback notwithstanding, the Government is not leaving any stone unturned in the efforts to bring all of the hostages back. The Defence, Security and Intelligence Agencies have given assurances to intensify operational engagements geared towards securing the rescue of all hostages and restoring peace to all parts of the country. Government is also mindful of efforts of some patriotic and influential persons and institutions that are helping in securing the safe release of the hostages.

“President Buhari welcomes the return of the recently released passengers back to their families and loved ones, while expressing his solemn commitment to the families of those still in captivity, assuring that there will be no let-up until they are reunited with their families in the shortest time possible.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed new ministers into his cabinet.

Their appointment, which is subject to the confirmation of the senate, was announced on Tuesday.

The new ministers would replace former cabinet members who resigned to pursue their 2023 ambitions.

The electoral act as amended stipulates the resignation of those eyeing elective offices while in government.

A total of 10 ministers had indicated an interest in the 2023 elections, but while four dropped their ambitions in order not to resign, six stepped down and contested the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries.

They included the then Ministers of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio; Science, Technology and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu; Minister of State, Mines and Steel Development, Uche Ogah, Minister of State, Education, Emeka Nwajiuba and Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Chief Tayo Alasoadura.

Umana served as Secretary to the State Government when Godswill Akpabio was governor of Akwa Ibom State. Incidentally, the Managing Director, Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority (OGFZA), is now replacing Akpabio in the federal cabinet. He was governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State during the 2015 election, which was won by incumbent Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Ikoh served as Commissioner for Industry in the cabinet of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State. Recently, he announced his intention to represent Abia Central Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), but he later opted out.

Opia is an ex-Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, and former representative of Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta, Oru West in the Federal House of Representative. He represented Ohaji/Egbema constituency in the Imo House of Assembly from 2003 to 2011. He is currently the Special Adviser/Coordinator to the Imo state Governor on Oil and Gas matters. If confirmed by the senate, Opia will replace Emeka Nwaijuba, former Minister of State for Education.

Prior to his nomination, El-Yakubu was Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives). He represented Kano Municipal in the lower chamber of the National Assembly between 2003 and 2007. He took over the seat from Ghali Umar Na’Ábba, former Speaker of the House of Reps.

Udi was the Chairman of Abua Odua Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State when Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation, was governor of Rivers. Amaechi, who governed Rivers between 2007 and 2015, was appointed into Buhari’s cabinet in 2015. He was one of the ministers who were reappointed in 2019. Earlier this year, Amaechi resigned to pursue his presidential ambition. However, he lost the APC ticket to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Delta North Prince Ted Nwoko has declared the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi cannot win the 2023 presidency.

He advised the former Anambra Governor to return to the PDP and pick a ministerial appointment.

The former House of Representatives member in an exclusive interview with the BBC explained Peter Obi’s current party lacks the structure to produce the presidency despite his seemingly large support base.

He eulogised Obi, describing him as a very ‘frugal and conservative’ in his dealings while he was Governor.

Nwoko, who is husband of movie star Regina Daniels, said: “People Obi is a good man, I’ve known him for many years. When I did my Paris club refund for Anambra State, he impressed me.

“He impressed me because he will actually pick up the phone to arrange my flight. He will pick his phone to book my hotel. And he was the governor.

“He actually came to London and didn’t come like other governors that came to see me, to give me instructions. He came alone, carrying his bag.

“Peter Obi is a capitalist, don’t get me wrong. He is a big-time player in the business world. But he is very frugal, he is very conservative, the way he handles things.

“We will like him back in the PDP. I would want to be one of those that’ll encourage him to come back to PDP. We can have him.

“He will do very well as the Minister of Economy. He will help us run the economy. In eight years, the Nigerian economy will start to turn round. He would do that, I know, we will have a very capable hand, he will do that.

“I mean he is making an impact now, no doubt. But I cannot imagine the swell of support to translate to victory for Labour Party. Labour Party doesn’t have the structure.

“The kind of structure we are talking about is not the support base, it’s included though. But there are unions, the labour unions, students, the market women and all that.”

House of Representatives member, Shina Peller has joined the Accord Party (AP).

The lawmaker made the announcement on the floor of the House on Tuesday.

Peller dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) last week.

In a statement, Peller disclosed that he entered talks with his new party and others after he left the APC.

The businessman said they were numerous options, but AP was chosen “for very peculiar reasons”.

He noted that Accord Party was the first platform in Oyo State to zone Oyo North Senatorial ticket to Oke Ogun considering that Ogbomosho Zone had done two terms.

Peller said the party has shown an unwavering commitment to the yearnings of the people of Oke-Ogun.

“In Oyo State, the Accord Party is a force to reckon with, its internal democracy mechanism is intact, a component lacking in other parties. Accord Party is also strategic as it concerns balloting.

“On the ballot paper, Accord comes first before the two major parties. With Accord as our party, voting sensitization becomes easier for us to do.

“Today, I would like to inform the general public that I am now with the Accord party. The logo of the Accord constantly reminds me and other well-meaning Nigerians of their civic responsibility – to vote for credible leaders.
