The Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, has expressed hope that a time will come when an Igbo man will become President of Nigeria.

Okowa, who doubles as the running to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 presidential candidate, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar insisted that is an Igbo Man in Delta State and the South South geo-political zone.

He stated this while responding to questions during Channels TV’s flagship political program, Politics Today on Thursday.

According to Atiku’s running mate, the South East has the right to agitate for the presidency.

He stated “There is no doubt that the South East and North East have the right to agitation for the presidential seat.

“Because from the records available, the North East and the South East have not been able to provide a President in this country as of today.

“I do believe that these are issues that we must discuss. These are issues that must be taken into consideration as we move into the future. There is no doubt about that.

“But in making requests, we must also realise that we are in a democratic process. And a democratic process requires that as you push for something, you continue to push and at a particular time it will come.

“The northeast feels that they are entitled to the presidency, the southeast feels that they are entitled to the presidency and both are right.”

Okowa also berated Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and other southern groups for not limiting their request to a particular zone.

“If PANDEF, Afenifere, Ohaneazi Idigbo, and others had insisted that we want the presidency to be zoned to this geo-political zone, it would have been a good request. But the truth is they were just asking for a southern presidency without trying to situate it,” he added.

The Delta State governor continued “but under the circumstances which we find ourselves, the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who is from the northeast got the PDP’s ticket and to a large extent when we win in 2023 that would have situated the presidency to the North East.

“So, as we move forward and the Igbos continue to make their agitation, the time will come when an Igbo man will also become president.”

A Peoples Democratic Party Chieftain (PDP), in Birnin Gwari local government area of Kaduna State, Dr. Mohammad Uwawamaka Thursday, faulted the sacking of over 2000 primary school teachers by the Kaduna State Government.

He said the sacking of teachers, means denying them their means of livelihood, which is worst than kidnapping.

He said kidnappers may pity the kidnapped victim and release him after payment of ransom, but once you are sacked, for life, you may not be opportune to secure the same job in the state again, even to pay your entitlement, becomes a problem.

“Without a job, and no payment of your gratuities and pension, sickness sets in, BP rises, financial hardship sets in, and the person begins dying while alive. He becomes useless to himself and his family before he finally gives up the ghost,” he said

Dr. Uwawamaka who said Governor El-Rufai’s government in the state, is adding more injuries to the pains he had created in the state, noted that with the sack of those teachers, El-Rufai has again created room for criminals, bandits and all forms of evil in the state.

Dr. Uwawamaka who wondered how the sacked teachers will survive said it is even difficult for those working to survive, talk more of those without jobs at this difficult time of inflation, food scarcity and lack.

He noted that Governor El-Rufai has forgotten that whatever decision he takes, positive or negative will have a direct bearing on the 2023 general election.

”It’s a difficult task for every household to survive in this period of inflation, and scarcity, yet, someone, somewhere is there sacking workers for unjustified reasons.” He said

Organ Harvesting: Ike Ekweremadu’s Child Needs A Transplant – Kperogi Opens Up

Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice are in the eye of a raging storm having been arrested on Thursday by the UK Police over alleged child trafficking and organ harvest of a child.

Ekweremadu was recently under fire from social media users for saying the South-East region will not vote for the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, in 2023.

He has spent over 19 years in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.

He was the Deputy Senate President for three consecutive terms (sixth, seventh and eighth) under David Mark and Bukola Saraki, respectively.

In June, he withdrew from the 2023 governorship race in Enugu State after failing to clinch the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ekweremadu, born on May 12 at Amachara Mpu in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, is also a lawyer and a staunch member of PDP.

He holds both Bachelor and Master degrees in law from the University of Nigeria and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1987.

He was appointed as the Executive Chairman of Aninri Local Government Council on the platform of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) in 1997 and won the Best Council Chairman of the year, in 1997.

Ekweremadu was appointed Chief of Staff to Enugu in 1999 and served in that capacity till 2001. He was later appointed as Secretary to Enugu State Government in 2001 and served till 2002.

He was elected First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament and emerged the Speaker of the regional parliament in August 2011.

On February 23, 2019, Ekweremadu was re-elected as senator representing the Enugu West senatorial district for the fifth consecutive time.

On August 17, 2019, while attending the Second Annual Cultural Festival and Convention organized by Ndi-Igbo Germany in Nuremberg, Ekweremadu became the victim of a violent attack when members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) stormed the venue of the event and began to question Ekweremadu about the killings of Igbos when the army staged the Operation Crocodile Smile and Python Dance.

Ekweremadu has to his credit several awards, honours and traditional titles. He was inducted as a Knight of the Order of the Good Shepherd, Diocese of Enugu (Anglican Communion); Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Africa Leadership Award; Doctor of Laws, LLD,(Honoris Causa), University of Uyo, etc.

Traditionally, he has been conferred with the Ochiagha Ndigbo (Generalissimo of Igboland) by Eze Nri, the custodian of Igbo culture and tradition; the Ikeoha Ndigbo (Pride and Strength of Ndigbo) by the South East Council of Traditional Rulers, etc. Ekweremadu holds the national honour of the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).

Although not much is known about Ekweremadu’s wife, she has kept a silent profile despite her husband’s long stay in politics.

Lady Nwanneka’s marriage to Ike is blessed with four children.

The couple are in the news, especially on the international radar. They have been arrested and charged to court for bringing a child to the UK for organ harvesting.

Confirming the arrests in a statement, the metropolitan police said the pair was charged to court on Thursday following an investigation by the police’ specialist crime team.

The police added that the investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.

“They have both been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court later today.” the statement reads.

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was condemning Nigeria when he was in Britain.

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday said this during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Great Britain on the margins of the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kigali, Rwanda.

Buhari dismissed reports that Kanu was not being allowed to see his lawyers privately.

The President said the detained separatist was being given every opportunity under the law “to justify all the uncomplimentary things he had been saying against Nigeria in Britain.”

“He felt very safe in Britain, and said awful things against Nigeria. We eventually got him when he stepped out of the United Kingdom, and we sent him to court. Let him defend all that he has said there. His lawyers have access to him. Remember he jumped bail before, how are we sure he won’t do it again, if he’s admitted to bail?”

On the keenness expressed by the PM to help Nigeria in the area of security, the President said helping to stabilise Libya could be an initial good step, as the fall of Muammar Gadaffi after 42 years in power unleashed his armed guards on countries in the Sahel, “and they are causing havoc everywhere, as the only thing they know how to do is to shoot guns.”

On Boko Haram insurgency, President Buhari said there was serious effort to educate the people on the fact that only an unserious person could kill innocent people, “and say Allah Akbar (God is Great). God is justice. You can’t take innocent souls, and ascribe it to God. And the education process is working, the people now understand Boko Haram as anti-God, and not about religion.”

Mr Johnson, who was obviously not quite familiar with the maximum two terms limit, had asked if President Buhari would run for office again.

In response to the question, the President said: “Another term for me? No! The first person who tried it didn’t end very well (general laughter).”

Johnson said he was delighted about the good news on trade between the two countries, adding that the UK was further reducing tariffs on some goods going to Nigeria.

He described the relationship between the countries as “very strong attachment,” adding: “I just want to be sure that we are doing enough. It’s a massive partnership for us, and we need to capitalize on it.”

The Prime Minister offered condolences on some recent attacks in Nigeria, particularly on churches.

For executing massive developmental projects for his constituents in his Senatorial zone, Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has been honoured with the “overall best constituency projects and human relations award “at the 2022 Senate press Corps award held in Abuja on Thursday. 

The award is organised annually by the Senate Press Corps which is Apex media body of the Senate. The award will be the second in a row bagged by the Abia North legislator in the constituency development category, having won the 2021 edition organised by the apex media body of the  National Assembly.

According to the award organisers, Kalu who represents Abia-North Senatorial District at the National Assembly defeated other 108 Senators out of 109 to bag the coveted Honour.

Giving reason for the award, Chairman of the Senate Press Mr. James Itodo emphasised that Kalu was bestowed with the award due to his efforts in facilitating numerous development projects and empowerment programmes for his constituents.

Itodo added that execution of constituency projects by legislators, particularly at the Federal level is lawmaker on the templates of responsive and responsible representation since the introduction of the idea during the 4th Assembly.

Reeling out Kalu’s achievements Itodo who spoke during the award plaque presentation said that within the last three years,  the number of projects ranging from road construction, construction and reconstruction of schools, and hospitals to other basic amenities in Abia state and Abia-North were too numerous to be mentioned.

On human relations, the Senate Press Corps noted that Kalu’s financial wherewithal and experience as a former Governor of Abia State in addition to his constant close interactions with his constituents, made it easy for the Abia North parliamentarian to know the exact project needs of his people.

He said; “As partners with the 9th National Assembly in our progressive democratic strides, this award confirms that indeed the desirable dividends of democracy are gradually taking root in our nation. 

“The award is in recognition of the selfless and dedicated service of just a few of our Distinguished Senators that we have singled out for a token appreciation for their conscientious efforts to entrench democratic principles and culture in our polity, particularly in legislature. 

The epoch ceremony held at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja also had in attendance other distinguished Senators and principal officers of the Senate. They include; the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan Senator Seraike Dickson, Senator Barau Jibrin, Senator Aliyu Sabi and others.

Since his election in 2019, Orji Kalu a former Governor of Abia State and first-time Senator has within three years facilitated the construction of over 50 roads in his community.

Kalu has also embarked on the construction and reconstruction of equipment for schools and hospitals as well as distributing learning materials to both staff and students.

In order to boost entrepreneurship and reduce unemployment, Kalu has so far distributed with over 3000 motorcycles, 5000 sewing machines and other items to support agriculture and vocational trades. In this Legislative duty, Kalu sponsored 51 bills in the Senate.

“The Child Is Below 18” – UK Police Speaks On Ike Ekweremadu’s Organ Harvesting Case

Ike Ekweremadu, former Deputy Senate President, and Beatrice, his wife, were arrested on their way to Istanbul, Turkey.

Prosecutors said this at an Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court in the United Kingdom, where Ekweremadu and his wife were arraigned over attempted harvesting of organs.

ABN TV had reported how the Metropolitan Police arrested the Nigerian couple over an attempt to harvest the organ of an unidentified child.

When he was arraigned on Thursday, the court refused to grant him bail but ordered that he should be remanded till July 7.

In a statement confirming the arrest, the Metropolitan Police had said the pair were charged to court on Thursday following an investigation by the police’ specialist crime team.

ARISE TV quoted the prosecutors to have told the court that the couple was arrested at Heathrow airport, on their way to Istanbul, Turkey.

According to the prosecutors, it is believed that they were on their way to procure another organ as they were unable to harvest the organ of the boy.

The prosecutors were also said to have told the court that the Ekweremadus have a daughter who has a kidney-related disease and has been on dialysis for quite some time.

They told the court that it is believed that the plan was to use an organ from the boy on their daughter who appears to need a kidney transplant.

Appeal Court Affirms Conviction Of Former Bank PHB MD, Francis Atuche Over N25.7bn Fraud

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division has upheld the conviction of a former Managing Director of the defunct Bank PHB Plc, Francis Atuche, for a N25.7bn fraud.

The court also upheld the conviction of Atuche’s accomplice and co-convict, Ugo Anyanwu, who was the bank’s former Chief Financial Officer.

An abridged decision of the court to this effect was read by Justice Sadiq Umar. The other justices on the panel are Justice Adebukola Banjoko and Justice Kayode Bada.

The 3 man panel in their decision also upheld in part, the June 16, 2021 judgment of Justice Lateefah Okunnu of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja.

They also upheld the discharge and acquittal of Atuche’s wife, Elizabeth.

The EFCC had in 2011 arraigned the defendants before Justice Lateefah Okunnu over a N25.7b fraud.

But Atuche and the co-defendants approached the Court of Appeal after about three years, to challenge their trial by the lower court for lack of jurisdiction.

In a judgment delivered in September 2016, the court ordered Justice Okunnu to hand off the trial but did not quash the charge against the defendants.

The EFCC then approached the Supreme Court to set aside the decision of the appellate court and order a trial in the matter.

After listening to the EFCC’s counsel, the apex court directed that the case be returned to Justice Okunnu for the continuation of trial.

Atuche and his wife returned to Justice Okunnu with Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kemi Pinheiro prosecuting the case on behalf of the EFCC with the fiat of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

In his submissions before the court, Pinheiro opposed Atuche’s contention that the funds in dispute were loaned, not stolen.

Justice Okunnu agreed with Pinheiro and held that since the money belonged to the bank, it was capable of being stolen.

“The first and third defendants did not debunk the evidence of the prosecution that the loans were used to purchase shares. They rather contended that the monies granted as the loan could be used for whatever purposes,” Okunnu stated.

She subsequently sentenced Atuche and Anyanwu, while Atuche’s wife was acquitted.

Following the June 16, 2021 sentence, the appellants challenged their conviction and asked the appellate court to set aside the decision of the lower court.

The appeal was heard in April, following which the court adjourned till today, Thursday for judgment.

The member representing Bende Federal Constituency, Rep. Benjamin Kalu has broken silence on the recent video made by one Mr. Chinedu Obilor on the current state of Etitiulo-Bende-Itumbauzo Road.

He said the road is currently a work in progress by the distinguished Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu which is yet to be completed.

In a detailed video released by the spokesperson House of Representatives, he took time to analyze the state of the road prior to the intervention of the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu who is facilitating the reconstruction of portion of the project.

Rep. Kalu explained that the road has been abandoned for over 39 years by the past representatives of the constituency to the point of splitting into two due to the ecological degradation thus making the road impassable by members of the Etitiulo Community.

He further stated that as a result of the bad state of the road and its urgency to be fixed, he also tabled the project on the floor of the House of Representatives where it was approved, and subsequently availed him the opportunity to commence rehabilitation of other portions of the road executed by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), adding that he has since completed and commissioned the first and second phase with others still in progress.

He emphasized that the road is a 23km road which may not been fixed at once as a result of paucity of funds.

He added that while the role of the legislators is not to execute the project as it is in the parameters of the agency appointed by the executives to carry out the project while they monitor at intervals.

Rep. Kalu highlighted that the Senator has indeed made efforts on the project which has collapsed the first time as a result of the soil topography, regardless of the unavailability of funds, he has strived to see to the success of the project.

The lawmaker added that the contractor is still on site and will ensure that the damage on the road is currently looked into.

He urged citizens to verify facts and explore the right channels when issuing complaints around projects facilitated by their leaders to avoid misleading the general public.

Organ Harvesting: Ike Ekweremadu’s Child Needs A Transplant – Kperogi Opens Up

Popular critic and Social Commentator, Farooq Kperogi has given some insight into an Organ Harvesting Case facing Ex-deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice.

Ekweremadu and his wife are currently in police custody in the United Kingdom after getting arrested on suspicion of Organ Harvesting. They were denied bail by a Uxbridge Court on Thursday.

Speaking on the matter, Kperogi wrote: “Organ harvesting doesn’t mean killing someone and selling their body parts for “money” or other kinds of “ritual.”

“It’s a term for surgically removing a body organ, such as a kidney, from a healthy person who can live without it and transplanting it to the body of someone who is in danger of dying without it.”

“It’s a crime in the UK and elsewhere if this is done without the consent of the organ donor.”

“Ekweremadu’s child needs an organ to survive, and he is alleged to have brought in a donor from Nigeria whose consent he and his wife didn’t seek.”

“Contrary to what people are saying on social media, he didn’t plan on killing someone for “ritual.”
