The crisis in the All Progressives Congress (APC) over Yobe North Senatorial District ticket for the 2023 election has taken a new dimension.

Bashir Sherrif Machina won the primary conducted on May 28, 2022, but the APC leadership under Abdullahi Adamu had submitted the name of Senate President Ahmad Lawan as candidate of the senatorial district for the election.

This had irked Machina and his supporters who accused APC of being anti-democratic.

In an interview he granted to BBC, Adamu had asked Machina to be mindful of his utterances.

However, on Friday, Machina stormed the office of Tthe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Yobe State to obtain certified true copy of the primary election, which the commission monitored.

In a copy of the document sighted by our correspondent, Machina scored 289 votes out of the 300 votes cast by the delegates.

The document certified by the electoral office on June 23, 2022, did not mention Ahmad Lawan, the Senate President.

Machina has been arguing that Lawan who took a shot at the presidential ticket of the APC did not participate in the primary.

Although he admitted that he was under pressure, Machina has vowed not to relinquish the ticket to Lawan.

In a chat with Daily Trust, Machina said he was approached by some people to relinquish the ticket, but that he would not.

The candidate said he was not opposed by any senatorial hopeful for the ticket because “I was the one that was qualified”.

“As far as I’m concerned, I contested for the Yobe north senatorial ticket and I won the election,” the candidate said. I was confirmed elected because there were other contestants but I was the one that was qualified. I happened to be unopposed.

“I am still the candidate; I have not withdrawn and I will not withdraw for anybody. I am being approached by some persons but I will not withdraw, Insha Allah.”

Machina went to INEC office in Yobe after the National Commissioner on Information and Voter Education of the electoral body, Mr Festus Okoye, cleared the air on the controversies surrounding Yobe North Senatorial primary.

Speaking when he featured on a television programme, Okoye advised aggrieved aspirants to obtain Certified True Copy (CTC) of the election result from the commission.

President Muhammadu Buhari has ruled out the bail option for the leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.

Instead, Buhari insisted that the IPOB leader should “justify all the uncomplimentary things he had been saying against Nigeria in Britain”.

“He felt very safe in Britain and said awful things against Nigeria. We eventually got him when he stepped out of the United Kingdom, and we sent him to court,” Buhari said during a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the margins of the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kigali, Rwanda.

“Let him defend all that he has said there. His lawyers have access to him. Remember he jumped bail before, how are we sure he won’t do it again if he’s admitted to bail?”

According to a statement by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, Buhari also ruled out seeking a third term in office, claiming the person who attempted it did not end well in what many believe is a subtle reference to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

“Another term for me? No!” he maintained. “The first person who tried it didn’t end very well.”

Aside from this, Johnson and Buhari also discussed security issues in Nigeria with the Nigerian leader linked the renewed wave of crimes in Nigeria to the crisis in Libya.

Buhari said the keenness of the PM to help Nigeria tackle insecurity is a good step but reiterated that since the fall of Muammar Gadaffi after 42 years in power, armed guards have been unleashed on countries in the Sahel.

These people, he said “are causing havoc everywhere, as the only thing they know how to do is to shoot guns”.

He, however, said the country is making progress in the fight against Boko Haram and other groups.

One of the steps being taken by the Nigerian government, he added, was educating that people that only an unserious person could kill innocent people, “and say Allah Akbar (God is Great). God is justice. You can’t take innocent souls, and ascribe it to God. And the education process is working, the people now understand Boko Haram as anti-God, and not about religion”.

“Russia Uses Hunger As Weapon Of War And Holds The Whole World Hostage” – Annalena Baerbock

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock accused Russia of using ”hunger as a weapon of war” and holding ”the whole world hostage,” ahead of a key gathering on Friday in Berlin.

US State Secretary Antony Blinken is among those attending the conference on the looming food crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.

Baerbock told reporters in Berlin that the event, entitled “Uniting for Global Food Security,” will address supply shortages caused by the war, while aiming to “stabilize food supplies worldwide.”

She said the conference was called into action ”at very short notice” and that 50 delegations, as well as 40 ministers, from around the world will be attending.

The top priority is to set up reliable transport routes to allow grain from Ukraine to be exported, she said of the food security conference.

Anyone who does not attend the hunger crisis conference should ask themselves how they can contribute,” she added.

The West has demanded that Russia stop the blockade of Ukrainian seaports to allow vast stores of grain to be taken to world markets as fears rise of famines in vulnerable regions.

Germany’s development minister Svenja Schulze, who was speaking at the same news briefing, said the country will spend $4.2 billion this year in the fight against global hunger.

The Berlin conference will take place as the leaders of the G7 countries prepare to meet in the Bavarian Alpine resort of Schloss Elmau between June 26 and 28.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to discuss financial aid for Ukraine with the G7 leaders by video link on Monday.
