Nnamdi Kanu Appears In Court Today, Calls For Calm

Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday denied the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB Mazi Nnamdi Kanu bail, ABN TV reports.

Kanu, who is currently facing a seven-count charge, had in the application he filed through his team of lawyers led by Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, equally challenge the revocation of the bail the court earlier granted to him.

He specifically urged the court to set aside the order it made on March 28, 2019, which not only issued a bench warrant for his arrest, but also gave FG the nod to try him in absentia.

The IPOB leader told the court that contrary to FG’s allegation that he jumped bail, he said that he fled for his life after his hometown at Afaraukwu Ibeku in Umuahia, Abia State, was invaded by soldiers, which he said led to the death of 28 persons.

Contending that he was denied fair hearing before his bail was revoked, Kanu, attached eight exhibits that included photographs, as well as an affidavit he deposed to from Isreal after he fled from the country.

Meanwhile, dismissing the bail request on Tuesday, trial Justice Binta Nyako, said she was not satisfied with the reason the IPOB leader gave for his failure to appear in court for the continuation of his trial.

The trial judge noted that from records of the court, Kanu was represented by his lawyer on the day his bail was revoked, likewise his sureties.

“Therefore, the Defendant was not denied fair hearing”. الرهانات

Besides, Justices Nyako held that though a court could vacate a previous order when confronted with a cogent and verifiable reason, “in the instant case, I have not been given any, neither have I been given any reason to set aside the order.

“The present application amounts to an abuse of court process for attempting to relitigate an issue already decided by the court. العاب اون لاين

“If the Defendant is dissatisfaction, he has the Appeal Court to go to.

“This application is accordingly dismissed”, Justice Nyako held.

It will be recalled that the court had also on March 18, declined to release the embattled IPOB leader on bail.

The court maintained that Kanu must explain the reason why he breached the previous bail that was given to him, before he could enjoy another favourable discretion from it.

“Until the issue of the absence of the defendant for his trial, with all the bail conditions breached, is determined, the instant application of the defendant for bail will at best be premature and it is refused.

“However, the defendant is at liberty to re-file the application”, Justice Nyako added.

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has arrived the Abuja Federal High Court as his trial resumes.

Kanu was brought to court by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS.

The IPOB leader is facing trial before Justice Binta Nyako-led court for charges bordering on terrorism.

A few weeks ago, Justice Nyako had struck out some charges from those levelled against Kanu by the Federal Government.

However, the court is expected to rule on Kanu’s bail application today.

Kanu has been locked up by the DSS since he was arrested in June 2021.

The IPOB leader was rearrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria.

Kano Govt Pays NECO Exam Fees For 29,031 Students

The government of Kano State has disclosed that it paid N336 million as fees for 29,031 students for the 2022 National Examination Council examinations.

This was disclosed on Monday by the State Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba in Kano.

Garba was reacting to a media report insinuating that the state students might miss this year’s NECO examination over the government’s inability to settle their examination fees.

He explained that payment covered 15,313 students that had 9 credits from their qualifying examination, and 1,018 students living with disabilities.

According to him, the payment also covered 7,300 students for Special Intervention which is basically for Girl Child Education while the local government councils paid for 5,400 students.

The commissioner also said that the examination was not being held today as speculated.

“Today (Monday) is the “Test Interpretation Practical”, which is only for teachers to come up with modalities for the practical exams,” the commissioner said.

We’ll Recommend Presidential Candidate To Nigerians Soon, Says Southern, Middle Belt Leaders

The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) has announced that it will soon recommend a presidential candidate to Nigerians.

This was contained in a communique issued on Monday by the group after its meeting held over the weekend in Abuja.

The meeting had in attendance various stakeholders from the zones, including national assembly members.

The SMBLF said the “appropriate” person will be recommended to the people after the leaders engage the various presidential candidates.

While commending political parties including the All Progressives Congress (APC), African Action Congress (AAC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Labour Party (LP), for fielding candidates from the south, the forum criticised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Action Alliance (AA), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), among others, for nominating presidential candidates from the north.

“SMBLF firmly reiterates its stance on the principle of zoning and power rotation between the North and the South, as the fulcrum on which the Nigerian Federation has, since independence, been premised,” the communique reads.

According to the group, it will in “due course, engage with the appropriate Presidential candidates and afterward decide on which of the candidates to recommend to the peoples of Southern Nigeria, the Middle Belt region and indeed, all Nigerians of goodwill, for consideration at the polls in 2023”.

On the state of the nation, the forum said the failure of the federal government to live up to its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and properties, is an invitation for residents to take up arms and defend themselves.

“That the state of insecurity in the country is worsening by the day, with devastating impacts on the welfare and livelihood of ordinary Nigerians, thus, calls on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to stem the tide and assuage the suffering of Nigerians,” the document reads.

“Warns that the ambiguity of the Federal Government and the failure of the security agencies to decisively deal with these situations, buttress concerns that officials of the Federal Government and security agents are complicit in the security anomalies in the country;

“Warns that the continuous abdication of the Government’s primary and abiding constitutional responsibility of safeguarding the lives and properties of its citizens, is an irresistible signal to Nigerians to exercise their inalienable rights of self-defence, by all means, in deviance of extant laws, which have not deterred terrorists the use of weapons even superior to those of the security agencies.”

The forum added that the security situation in the country calls for the implementation of state policy, and that the national assembly and the federal government should immediately begin the “requisite legislative instrument in this regard rather than indulging in meaningless lamentations”.

Signatories to the communique are Edwin Clark, SMBLF/PANDEF leader; Ayo Adebanjo, leader of Afenifere; Pogu Bitrus, president-general, Middle Belt Forum, and Okey Emuchay, secretary-general, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide.

Gov Diri Chairs PDP National Campaign Council For Osun Governorship Election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has approved the appointment of Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State as the Chairman of its National Campaign Council for the July 16 Osun State Governorship Election.

The party disclosed this in a statement by its National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, in Abuja on Monday.

Mr. Bature said the appointment was approved by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) under the leadership of its National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.

He said the 128 members Council would have Tombra Jumbo as Administrative Secretary

Mr. Bature urged all the council members to be available for inauguration on Wednesday at 10am at PDP National Secretariat, Abuja.

Vote For Candidate Who Shares My Vision For Nigeria - Moghalu Tells Supporters

The former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu has called on his supporters to vote for a presidential candidate that shares his vision for the country.

Recall that Moghalu contested the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) but lost to Dumebi Kachikwu, founder of Roots Television.

The former deputy CBN governor had later resigned his membership of the ADC after accusing the party of corrupting the process for the presidential primary.

Moghalu via a statement released on Monday said he would still be involved in the country’s governance process, but through providing contributions to support nation-building.

“Notwithstanding, I have opted not to be a candidate in this electoral cycle,” he said.

“At this time, I have no plans to become a member of any other political party for the purpose of the 2023 general election.

“For those supporters and the general public who have intended to vote for me as a presidential candidate in the general elections had I emerged as one, I ask you to cast your support and ballot in the 2023 election to the candidate that comes closest to our shared vision of a Nigeria that is secured, united, and prosperous.

“However, I intend to remain keenly engaged in our country’s immediate future, including the elections, with contributions that are appropriate and can be helpful to nation-building.

“To those who held tickets but resigned from the party in solidarity with me, and who still wish to contest elections, there are alternative avenues that can be explored.

“The best chance to achieve this vision is under transformative leadership that represents a break from the old political order.

“Our children must experience a tomorrow that is much better than our today.”

Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle has clarified that his directive urging people to acquire firearms is for them to complement the efforts of security forces in the ongoing war against insurgency.

He made the clarification on Monday while inaugurating four special committees at the Government House in Gusau, the State capital.

The governor explained that the committees were being inaugurated to ensure proper implementation of the security measures being taken to tackle the upsurge of banditry in the State.

The four special committees established today include Committee on Intelligence Gathering and Bandits’ Informants, Committee on Prosecution of Banditry Related Offences, Management of Community Protection Guards and Special Standing Security Committee.

Matawalle stated that in recent weeks, Zamfara has witnessed terrorists’ attacks in various communities, especially within Bukkuyum, Gusau and Gummi Local Government Areas of the State.

The governor reiterated that his administration will continue to explore strategies to crush the security challenges and the sufferings endured by the citizens in the hands of the terrorists.

He noted that the government is aware of the efforts of the security forces in tackling the prevailing insecurity, however, the governor opined that the efforts of the armed forces have been impeded by lack of modern war hardware and adequate manpower, hence the reason decided that the people should procure weapons to defend themselves against the terrorists.

Governor Matawalle disclosed that the state government has provide 20 Hilux vehicles and 500 motorbikes to the special Committees to make their jobs and movements easier.

Speaking also at the inauguration of the committees today, the chairman of the Special Committee on Prosecution of Banditry Related Activities, Abdullahi Shinkafi warned criminal elements to distance themselves from Zamfara State as it is time to deal decisively with anyone found culpable no matter how highly placed he or she may be in the society.

We’ll Strengthen SEC To Reposition Nigeria’s Capital Market, Says FG

The federal government has stated that it will strengthen the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to reposition Nigeria’s capital market.

This was made known by Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, budget, and national planning via a statement issued by the commission on Monday

According to the statement, Ahmed spoke while receiving the revised Nigerian capital market master plan (2021-2025) in Abuja.

The document was submitted to the minister by the capital market master plan implementation council led by Lamido Yuguda, director-general, SEC, and other top officials of the commission.

Ahmed said the review of the master plan showed that the capital market growth resonates with the current administration’s commitment to deepening and re-positioning the country’s financial markets for private-sector-led development. 

She added that the ministry of finance has supported the master plan implementation efforts since its inception. 

“Our capital market is growing and evolving. To sustain this growth and eventually transform into a world-class capital market, transparency and investor confidence are key,” Zainab said.

“Investor confidence will accelerate the growth of our market and increase both domestic and foreign investor participation. To this end, we will continue to support and strengthen the regulator to effectively do its job of regulating and developing the capital market.

“I see the capital market as an important driver of our economic growth objectives and we will continue to support efforts to position our market where it deserves to be — a capital market that will broaden access to economic prosperity by enabling the emergence of financially responsible citizens, accelerate wealth creation and wealth distribution, provide capital to small and medium scale enterprises, and catalyze housing finance.

“As you chart the course for the next phase of the capital market master plan’s implementation, I assure you of this administration’s support and look forward to working with you and other stakeholders in the financial market to realize the plan’s outcomes.”

Ahmed further commended SEC, the implementation committee, and other stakeholders for the laudable accomplishments recorded so far in the master plan implementation journey, especially in the areas of facilitation of access to alternative investments like Sukuk, and specialized funds; design of a national savings strategy; among others.

On his part, Yuguda, who also spoke at the meeting, said through the implementation of the 10-year Nigeria Capital Market Master Plan (2015 – 2025), the commission and other stakeholders have recorded significant milestones over the years.

Yuguda listed some of the achievements to include full dematerialization of certificates, direct cash settlement, and e-dividend mandate management system, among others.

He said the commission embarked on a comprehensive review of the plan, driven by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) with funding support from Financial Sector Deepening Africa (FSDA).

The comprehensive review of the master plan is now complete and a revised capital market master plan has been produced,” he said. 

“The revised plan has incorporated the views and aspirations of stakeholders in our market as well as best practices globally to produce a well-articulated strategic plan for the next four years.”

The chairman of the board of trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Walid Jibrin has claimed they will do whatever it takes to ensure that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, doesn’t defect.

Jibrin stated this on Monday while addressing journalists in Kaduna.

Wike lost out to the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, in the PDP presidential primary.

Following his loss, Wike accused party stakeholders from the south of “betrayal”.

His frustration was made worse when Atiku snubbed him as a running mate and picked Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.

Following these developments, there have been speculations that Wike may dump the opposition party, having been visited by Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential candidates of the Labour Party (LP) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), respectively.

But Jibrin said: “We in PDP know how to solve our problems. We know that Governor Nyesom Wike may not be happy.

“It is the intention of this party to constitute a reconciliation committee that will meet Wike to talk to him, appeal to him, and pray that he will not leave our party.”

Jibrin described Wike as “a great man who has been fighting for the party, and the party will not want to see him move to another party”.

“We will all visit Wike together and if it means kneeling to Wike, we will kneel for him,” the BoT chairman added.

AfDB To Establish Institution To Strengthen Africa’s Pharmaceutical Industry

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has stated that its board of directors has approved the establishment of the African Pharmaceutical Technology Foundation.

This was contained in a statement released on Monday by the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The bank stated the new institution would significantly enhance Africa’s access to the technologies that underpin the manufacture of medicines, vaccines, and other pharmaceutical products.

According to the bank, Africa imports more than 70 percent of all the medicines it needs, gulping $14 billion per year.

The AfDB said the foundation will operate independently and raise funds from various stakeholders including governments, development finance institutions, and philanthropic organizations, among others.

Commenting on the development, Akinwumi Adesina, AfDB president, described it as a great development for Africa.

“Africa must have a healthy defense system, which must include three major areas: revamping Africa’s pharmaceutical industry, building Africa’s vaccine manufacturing capacity, and building Africa’s quality healthcare infrastructure,” Adesina said.

“Even with the decision of the TRIPS Waiver at the World Trade Organization (WTO), millions are dying — and will most likely continue to die — from lack of vaccines and effective protection.

“The African Pharmaceutical Technology Foundation provides a practical solution and will help to tilt the access to proprietary technologies, knowledge, know-how, and processes in favor of Africa”.

According to the bank, the World Trade Organisation WTO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), welcomed its decision to establish the foundation.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, WTO director-general, was quoted as saying; “the African Pharmaceutical Technology Foundation is innovative thinking and action by the African Development Bank.

“It provides part of the infrastructure needed to assure an emergent pharmaceutical industry in Africa.”

On his part, Tedros Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, said the foundation’s establishment would be a game-changer in accelerating the access of African pharmaceutical companies to IP-protected technologies and know-how in Africa.

“Rwanda will host the African Pharmaceutical Technology Foundation. A common benefits entity, the Foundation will have its own governance and operational structures. It will promote and broker alliances between foreign and African pharmaceutical companies,” the statement adds.
