Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine is going according to plan, and there is no need to meet any deadlines for ending it, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday wrapping up his visit to Ashgabat.

According to Putin, the goal of the special military operation is to liberate Donbass, to defend the people living there, and “to create conditions that will guarantee the security of Russia itself.”

“The work is proceeding in a calm and rhythmic way. The troops are advancing and reaching those endpoints that are assigned as a task at a certain stage of this combat work. Everything is going according to plan,” Putin stressed.

When asked about a possible deadline for finishing the operation, the Russian president said, “There is no need to talk about any deadlines. I never talk about it, since this is life and these are real things. It is not right to squeeze that into any deadlines.”

“It is linked to the intensity of combat operations, which is directly linked to potential casualties, and we must think above all things about protecting our guys’ lives,” the president emphasized.

The Canaries president, Waldermar Kita told a press conference on Wednesday that Simon was among a group of players who would be allowed to leave should an interesting offer arrive.

“We would be delighted if they stayed, but if there are interesting offers, we would have to think about them,”Kita stated.

“Are there any offers? That’s part of the backstage business of the transfer market; I can’t talk too much about it. I can just say that those players are here now.”

Simon scored six goals and provided eight assists in 30 league appearances for Antoine Kombouare’s side last season.

He has also been linked with a move to Leeds United and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Terrorists Kill Policemen, Workers, Abduct 4 Chinese On Niger Mining Site

No fewer than 17 lives were reportedly lost and several others severely injured when terrorists attacked a mining site managed by the Chinese Nationals at Ajata-Aboki in Gurmana Ward of Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

The attack was reportedly launched on Wednesday afternoon during which seven persons, including mobile policemen guarding the miners and workers, were killed.

The attackers, reportedly armed with sophisticated weapons, were said to have arrived in the community around 2pm and headed to the mining site, shooting at anyone on sight.

The state Commissioner for Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Emmanuel Umar, confirmed the attack in a statement on Thursday but said the number of casualties were yet to be ascertained.

He said, “Niger State Government wishes to confirm that on 29/6/2022 at about 1600hrs, based on a distress call received that bandits/terrorists invaded a mining site located at Ajata Aboki village via Erena Ward of Shiroro LGA and a joint security team were mobilized to the scene in response to the distress call.”

Umar said while the terrorists were engaged by the joint security team, resulting in casualties from both sides.

He added, “A yet-to-be ascertained number of workers in the mining site including four Chinese nationals were reported to have been abducted.

“Security forces mobilized reinforcement for the manhunt of the remaining terrorists and rescue of the injured victims including security personnel that sustained varying degrees of injury have been taken to a government medical facility in the state for treatment.

“While the Niger State Government commiserates with the heads of security agencies in the state and the families of the slain personnel, the state government assures that their sacrifices will not go in vain.”

Umar said the state government acknowledged all the effort of the joint security operatives and that of the communities in the state towards taming the spate of insecurity in some parts of the state.

A resident of the area however told our correspondent in confidence that “about 11 people including seven mobile policemen attached to the mining site as security guards and six other civilian workers lost their lives in the attack.”

He said dozens, who sustained multiple gunshot injuries and were in critical conditions, had been taken to various medical facilities for treatment.

Sani Yusuf Kokki, Co-Convener, Concerned Shiroro Youths, also told Daily Trust that an unspecified number of Chinese nationals were kidnapped, describing the attack as terrific and terrible.

He lamented that “Kidnap for ransom has become a common phenomenon in our localities. It is quite unfortunate that we have been forced to coexist with this sad reality. We are being killed, maimed, raped among other inhuman subjugations by marauding terrorists.”

He added, “These rampaging terrorists attack their victims at will, ironically and unfortunately in some cases without slightest hindrance, resistance or confrontation from the conventional security. Sadly too, defenseless, unarmed, and peaceful locals have crassly been abandoned to their fate thereby compelling them to wallow in perpetual agony and misery.”

Osun: Let’s Take Advantage Of APC’s Disarray, Okowa Charges PDP

Ifeanyi Okowa

The Vice Presidential running mate of the Peoples Democratic Party and Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, has advised stakeholders of the party to take advantage of the disarray of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State to win the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Okowa gave the charge during the inauguration ceremony of the Osun National Governorship Campaign Council of the PDP on Wednesday at the headquarters of the party in Abuja.

“From the information that we have, the APC is already in disarray in the state but that is not enough for us to go to sleep.

“We are very much aware of the events that took place four years ago. There is no doubt that the PDP won that election but unfortunately, we were cheated out of the election. As we move into another election, we are confident that if all of us stay committed to the party, that we will be able to deliver the victory for our party.”

The Delta State Governor stated that Osun State certainly was a PDP state. He said there were great leaders who had a very obvious understanding of the politics in the state. He urged all leaders and followers in the state to quickly reconcile the gaps of divide that was amongst members of the party, because victory stared the party in the face; “God has gone ahead of the party.”

He further stated that he would be joining in the campaign to ensure that the party had victory alongside the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, on his return from his trip overseas.

“We believe that we are able to redeem Nigeria, rescue it and begin a process of rebuilding this nation. Yes, we were in office and made some mistakes. We have learnt our lessons, we have apologised to Nigerians. We’re coming back as a rebranded PDP and we are going to entrench democracy.”

The Deputy National Chairman North, Umar Damagum, who is the acting National Chairman of the party, said the responsibility that was to be bestowed on the council was the sole mandate of going to Osun State and win the election for the party.

“I believe with the caliber of people that have been selected to steer this campaign organisation, I have no doubt that you will give us the desired result.

“I also want to advise you to use that opportunity to engage the stakeholders in Osun, go to every corner, we have a very popular candidate in Osun and we have no reason not to win the election.

“If it is possible, break yourself into smaller committees to reach out to all and sundry, just make sure you give all it takes to win this election.

“The PDP had constituted an Ekiti Campaign Council that was never inaugurated, which may have resulted to the party’s defeat in the elections.

“With this inuaguaration of this 128-man council, the party has the conviction that it is ready to win the Osun Governorship Election,” Damagum said.

Police Sergeant Who Killed Driver Over N100 To Die By Hanging

A High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has sentenced a dismissed police sergeant, James Imhalu, to death by hanging for the murder of a commercial driver in 2015 over his refusal to pay a bribe of N100.

Justice Elsie Thompson, while delivering her judgment, said evidence before the court showed that the sacked sergeant intentionally fired a shot at the commercial driver, Legbara David, at Whimpey Junction, Port Harcourt.

Justice Thompson described Imhalu as a serial trigger-happy policeman who should not be allowed to remain in the society.

The prosecution counsel, Kingsley Briggs, said the judgement would serve as succour to the deceased’s family.

“Although the will of justice grinds slowly, surely justice will come.

“For the family of those that lost their breadwinner, it is quite unfortunate. But I believe this judgement will serve as succour to the family,” he stated.

On his part, a representative of the Legal Aid Council in Rivers State, who defended the sergeant, Mr Awaji, said his team would study the judgement to know the next line of action.

He said, “Today’s judgement I will say is justice for the people of Rivers State.

“Despite the fact that I represented the defendant, my analysis of the case when I came into the matter, I would say, I saw it coming.

“Having listened to the judgement, currently, there is no plan to go on appeal. But by the time we look at the judgement in-depth, perhaps we will find grounds for appeal. But as it is, there is no plan to go on appeal.”

Aggrieved Akwa Ibom Youths Barricade INEC Office, Demand REC’s Removal

0

Over 1,000 youths under the aegis of the Coalition of Political Parties in Akwa Ibom State, on Wednesday, barricaded the Secretariat of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the state, demanding the immediate removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini.

The protesters chanted the “Igini Must Go” slogan repeatedly and displayed placards of various inscriptions such as: “Igini is biased”, “Democracy is not for sale”, “INEC must act now”, “Akwa Ibom REC is compromised.”

Others include: “Igini, don’t kill Akwa Ibom political parties”, “Igini is partisan”, “Igini is a factional Chairman of a party”, among several others.

Speaking while addressing the protesters, the leader of the group, Mr. Ubok-Obong Umoh, said the “personal vendetta” of Igini against the main opposition party in the state should be probed.

“This protest is carried out by all the youths in opposition political parties in Akwa Ibom State and the APC supporters are all here because it is the main opposition party in the state. We are protesting clear partisanship demonstrated by a supposed umpire, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barr. Mike Igini.

Between 2019 and now, Igini has demonstrated that he has no faith in Nigerian democracy and as a result, he is now playing the script of the Akwa Ibom State Government,” Umoh said.

He accused Igini of acting on the instructions of the PDP government in the state, adding that nothing the APC or any other opposition party did that was acceptable to him.

He added that Igini should be probed over the comments he made during an interview on one of the national television stations that “the APC in the state will not have any candidate for the 2023 elections.

“His statement is unacceptable, not just to members of the APC, but also to the generality of the peace-loving people of Akwa Ibom State.

“Opposition is meant for checks and balances in government so if Barr. Mike Igini who supposed to be an umpire feels that there should be no opposition in Akwa Ibom State, he should pack his belongings and leave,” he added.

Also, the state APC Youth Leader, Dr. Awak Clement, said Igini “(He) is not the only REC that Nigeria has,” but queried why he should single himself out to fight the APC in the state.

He alleged that Igini has openly declared war against the APC even before the primaries, adding that for peace to reign in the state, the REC should either resign or be outrightly sacked.

He further querried why Igini should assume himself as the Supreme Court to reject the judgement delivered by the Federal High Court

Clement appealed to the INEC headquarters to take swift action on the matter so that the peaceful protest does not turn into a disastrous one.

Responding, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Mike Igini, attributed the crisis leading to the protest to the APC.

Igini accused the party of forgery, saying the APC in the state forged letters that led to the swearing in of Stephen Ntukekpo as the Chairman of the party against a court judgment.

He insisted that INEC recognises Austin Ekanem as the authentic state Chairman of the party, not Stephen Ntukekpo.

Katsina State governor, Aminu Bello Masari, has reappointed some members of his cabinet who resigned their positions to contest in the recently conducted All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries for different positions. Those reappointed are the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Farouk Lawal Jobe, and his rural development counterpart, Mustapha Mahmud, who both contested for the state governorship ticket but lost.

In his address, Masari said, “They remain part of us wherever they are. So, we feel the best thing to do is to request them to come back and they agreed to continue from where they stopped.

“With the new Electoral Act, everybody wanted to play safe. I have directed the Secretary to the State Government that the deputy governor should continue his assignment as Commissioner for Agriculture and he needs not be sworn in.”
