Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed Western sanctions are pushing Russia and Belarus toward “speeding up integration” in various sectors, which he said would “minimize the damage” of the sanctions. 

“Russia and Belarus continue to grow in their cooperation in the political, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres,” Putin said in a video message to the participants of an annual Russia-Belarus forum on Friday

“The unprecedented pressure of sanctions from the so-called collective West is pushing us towards speeding up integration. Together it is easier to minimize the damage from the illegal sanctions, it is easier to set up the production of demanded products, develop new competencies and expand cooperation with friendly countries,” Putin said.

Belarus is a staunch Russian ally and helped facilitate Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February, with some Russian forces entering the country through the Ukrainian-Belarusian border.

A number of joint programs between the two nations have already been developed and more are on track for the coming years, Putin said. Areas of cooperation include technological and industrial innovation, finances and transport.

Putin said the joint programs were aimed at creating “equal economic conditions for our countries” and would “form a reliable framework for a financial market and transports base.”

His message comes just days before Belarus celebrates its independence from Nazi Germany on July 3, and as Russia and Belarus marked 30 years of diplomatic relations earlier this year.

President Muhammadu Buhari has described Thursday’s attack in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State as a direct assault on Nigeria.

The President, in a statement issued Friday by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, said the attackers would not go unpunished.

He said the incident would not affect the battle against terrorism as the country was united to get rid of these “demons” and “terrorists” whom he further described as “parasites”. لعبه البوكر لعبه البوكر

Buhari paid tributes to the gallant men of the security forces who lost their lives in the process of defending the attack and asked Nigerians to pray for the safe return of those abducted.

He said: “We honour our security forces, and particularly those brave souls who have given their lives fighting against the evil that is terrorism. They constitute the best that Nigeria has to offer and we remember each of them.

“Sadly, Nigeria’s fight against terrorism continues. It is a battle that is taking its toll on all of us. But we shall not relent, nor shall we surrender. We say it again that we have reduced Boko Haram to a shell of its former self. But terrorists are parasites. They thrive when the world is suffering.

“This atrocity only serves to further strengthen us against them. روليت عربي Nigeria is united in obliterating these demons. Each day we grow closer to that goal. When they lash out during times of global suffering it is the act of a cornered animal, an act of desperation. As always, their goal is the same: to sow fear and division amongst us. We will not let them.

“Instead let us pray for the families and loved ones of those who sacrificed their lives in the fight against evil, and let us pray for the safe and speedy return of those abducted. We will do everything possible to ensure their return. And to the sadists, I say this: we are coming. Nigeria will know peace,” the President assured.

The terrorists in Niger State had killed 15 soldiers and seven policemen during an ambush.

The soldiers belonging to the 45 Battalion, Bida, were said to be on a rescue mission when the terrorists, acting on prior information laid siege on the way.

A group of the terrorists had earlier attacked a mining site being managed by Chinese nationals at Ajata-Aboki in Gurmana Ward of Shiroro Local Government Area of the state.

During the attack, seven mobile policemen guarding the site and some soldiers at a nearby Erena community were among those killed.

Shiroro is also a strategic town because it houses the Shiroro Power Station, a hydroelectric power plant on the Kaduna River in Niger State, with a power generating capacity of 600 megawatts (800,000 hp), which is enough to power over 404,000 homes.

Kola was said to have confided in a friend that he was tired of the union because his wife, Toyin was no longer sleeping at home and does not attend Sunday services with her husband and their son.
 
In a statement released on Friday by Abraham’s management, the couple claimed there was no iota of truth in the stories making the rounds as they both confirmed that their marriage is fine.
 
The statement read in part: “We just saw a report of an ‘untrue’ and alleged ‘shaky’ marriage of our talent, Toyin Abraham and her Nollywood star husband, Kola Ajeyemi. Often time, people say there is no smoke without fire, but this time around we assure all fans of Toyin and Kola Ajeyemi that there was no smoke talk less of fire. This story is not true. Toyin has not slept out in months except for location or when she’s out of town for jobs. Most often than not, she and her husband holiday together both within and outside Nigeria.”

He then warned people to stop calling him a man, adding that just because one has a manhood does not make him a man.

Ukraine’s candidate status to join the EU is something that was hard to imagine just five months ago and the country still has a long way to go before becoming a member, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a speech to the Ukrainian parliament on Friday.

“Ukraine is a candidate country to join the European Union, something that seemed almost unimaginable just five months ago,” she said in the speech by video link. “So today is first and foremost a moment to celebrate this historic milestone, a victory of determination and resolve and a victory for the whole movement that started eight years ago on the Maidan.”

She said Ukraine will move along the European path along with rebuilding the country. New reforms, she said, will have to accompany lavish investment that will rush into the country. Anti-corruption agencies need tools and the right people that should be appointed as soon as possible, the European official said.

Von der Leyen said the judicial system requires changes and legislation needs to be in place that will remove the control of oligarchs over Ukraine’s economy and politics.

“There’s a long road ahead for Ukraine but Europe will be at your side every step of the way. For every reform, for as long as it takes,” the EC president said.

An EU summit on June 23 granted Ukraine the candidate status to join the EU and set conditions that need to be met before accession talks could start. They include stepping up the fight on corruption, conducting a judicial reform and a deoligarchization.

‘We Don’t know Victor Moses whereabouts’ – Spartak Moscow

Dmitry Zelenov head of Spartak Moscow’s press service, has announced that the club is expecting to hear news about Nigerian forward Victor Moses in the future.

Over the past days, there has been speculation in the Russian media that the former Chelsea star was going to link up with the Spartak Moscow squad at their training camp.

However, Moses did not participate in the Red and Whites open training session on Thursday, and the press service of the club said it understands the reasons for the absence of the Nigerian at the training camp.

Zelenov confirmed that the club will soon announce a decision on the future of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner.

“As for Moses, we still have nothing to add to what we have announced. I think news about Victor Moses will appear in the near future,” Zelenov told reporters.

Moses helped the club to the Russian Cup last season to end a 19-year wait, after defeating Dinamo Moscow 2-1 in the final at the Stadion Luzhniki in Moscow last month.

Nigeria Women’s 4x100M Relay Team ‘Qualify’ For World Championships

The Nigerian women’s 4x100m relay team will compete at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA after France failed to name a team for the event.

The French Athletics Association on Thursday unveiled its list of athletes for the championships without including its women’s 4x100m relay team while six athletes viz Amandine Brossier, Shana Grebo, Diana Iscaye, Sokhna Lacoste, Sounkamba Sylla and Marjorie Veyssiere were named in the 4x400m team.

Although no official reason was given, checks by our correspondent reveal that the French cannot present a decent team for the event as the highest ranked sprinter out of the European nation is Mallory Leconte who is rated 148th in the world this year with an 11.33 seconds personal season’s best.

The other sprinters are ranked between 295 (Chloe Galet, 11.48 and Leelou Martial-Ehoulet, 11.48) and 421 (Serena Kouassi, 11.57).

France is one of the 10 countries which secured qualification for the 4x100m relay event at the 2021 World Relays in Poland.

Nigeria was not at the competition and had to compete for the remaining four spots on offer. Led by Blessing Okagbare, Nigeria secured her spot at the Tokyo Olympics following the relay team’s 42.97 seconds run at the Olympic Trials and Invitational Relays held in June 2021 in Lagos.

The result was within the qualification period for the Oregon 2022 World Championships and the Nigerians thought they could qualify as the 16th nation until Monday June 27, 2022 when the Athletics Integrity Unit announced a further one year ban on Okagbare.

The 33 year old was accused of additional anti-doping rule violations – specifically evading sample collection, and tampering or attempted tampering with the doping control process.

The significant consequence of the further one year ban was that Nigeria lost its qualification place for the women’s 4x100m relay.

This was because six days after Okagbare evaded sample collection (13 June 2021), she competed in the 4x100m relay event at the Nigeria Olympic Trials, with her relay squad qualifying for this year’s World Championships.

All individual and relay results involving Okagbare, from 13 June 2021, are now disqualified under the rules.

But with France’s decision not to name a women’s 4x100m relay team for the championships, Nigeria will move up from her 17th spot to 16, the final qualification spot.

Oshoala Launches Football Academy For Girls

Asisat Oshoala, four-time African Footballer of the Year and FC Barcelona Femení star, announces the launch of the ‘Asisat Oshoala Academy,’ (AOA) in partnership with Nike and Women Win.

AOA is designed to provide access to football and lifeskills for marginalized schoolgirls in Lagos.

The Academy is the latest initiative of Asisat that will build upon her mission of providing access to sport and education for young girls in her community.

“I have always strived to give back to the girl child in my community and I believe this football academy will provide opportunities for more girls to excel through the combination of sport and education. I want to thank our partners Women Win and Nike for helping bring this platform to life. Together we can go further and achieve a lot more” Oshoala stated.

The Asisat Oshoala Foundation, established in 2015, will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the academy. Women Win, the Amsterdam-based global women’s fund dedicated to advancing girls and women’s rights, will bring their expertise to the Academy’s development.

“Women Win is very proud and excited to be partnering with our longtime partner Nike, Asisat and the Asisat Oshoala Academy to leverage the power of sport to support girls in Nigeria to become better equipped to exercise their rights. AOA will provide 30 girls (age 12 – 18) with access to 90 mins of football training three times a week. The program will be complimented with life skills education covering a range of empowerment and rights-based topics. Graduates from the academy will be encouraged to convert their leadership skills to make a positive impact in their respective communities.

In addition to the weekly programming, the Academy will host 4 ‘She Plays’ events a year. These events will broaden the reach of the academy’s activities and will host up to 100 schoolgirls, aged 12 to 18 years, every session.

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has revealed the three names the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, presented from which a panel was to decide his running mate.

According to him, they are Governor Nyesom Wike (Rivers State), Governor Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta State) and Governor Emmanuel Udom (Akwa Ibom State).

However, Ortom claims their preference was Wike, who he described as “eminently qualified”.

“Of course, three names were presented. In the order of preference, it was Wike, Okowa, and Governor Udom.

“Three of them were qualified but Governor Wike was eminently qualified.

“We said that for the PDP to win, we needed Governor Wike.

“Yes, Wike may have his own weak points, but to some people, those were his strong points in this life,” Ortom said on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday.

Ortom also stressed that Atiku shouldn’t have sought consultations if he was going to choose Okowa without considering the recommendations of the panel.

“If he decided just like he did in 2019 by choosing (Peter) Obi without consultation, and it was accepted, he could have done the same thing.

“But bringing all of us together, taking me from my state and taking several other governors from their states and bringing all of us to a committee — very responsible stakeholders, BOT, former governors’ forum and national working committee — and asking us to recommend, I think 14 out of 17 is enough to take a decision for anyone, whether you are a candidate or not,” Ortom added.

Kaduna Government Denies Attack On Kaduna-Abuja Road

Alhaji Zubairu Abdulra’uf, a community leader from the Birnin Gwari Emirate Council in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, lamented that members of the communities in the area were allowed to go to their farms this rainy season by bandits after paying N400 million.

He said that the people of the emirate have all started defending themselves against the activities of terrorists that had taken over the area over the years.

Speaking to newsmen in Kaduna on Thursday, he explained that the incessant attacks on communities by the terrorists had paralyzed economic activities, especially in the rural areas, and made it completely impossible for them to travel to other places to undertake their legitimate activities.

According to him, N200 million was paid to the terrorists in the Randegi district alone.

He added, “When you talk of Birnin-Gwari Local Government as a whole, it’s between N300 million to N400 million paid to these bandits.”

He further explained that the payment is in three stages, stressing that the bandits are paid in pre-season and mid-season when the crops are about to start yielding.

He added that payment has to be made to the bandits because they will not allow the farmers to have access to their farms, saying that at the end of the season when the farmers are harvesting, they will also pay the bandits before they access their farms.

Abdulra’uf also revealed that the levy does not end there, adding that each farmer also gives between two to 10 bags of grains to the bandits.

He said the residents of Birnin-Gwari have been paying the levies for over three years, lamenting the frustration. He said since the government cannot protect them, they have chosen to arm themselves.
