‘Why Super Falcons Remain Dominant In Africa’ — South Africa Coach

Banyana Banyana of South Africa head coach Desiree Ellis has explained why she believes the Super Falcons remain the dominant team in Africa.

On Monday, the Falcons will begin the defence of their title when they face South Africa in their 2022 WAFCON Group C opener.

Their last encounter in the competition was in the final of the 2018 edition in Ghana which the Falcons won 4-3 on penalties.

When the two teams met at last year’s Aishat Buhari Cup in Lagos, South Africa triumphed 4-2.

And speaking at a Press Conference on Sunday afternoon, Ellis stated that consistency on the part of the Falcons has continued to set them apart from other teams on the continent.

“The first game of the tournament is always the biggest game and this makes it even better because it’s against defending champions Nigeria and because it is Nigeria, the game is bigger than what it is supposed to be.

“We want to start well and we know it is going to be a tough encounter. They are not Champions for nothing.

“They have been consistent over the years and that is one area that we need to improve on; to be consistent in our performances and be classified amongst the best.

“It’s all about the three points at the moment and getting the tournament to a good start.”

Ellis was in charge of Banyana Banyana when they lost to the Falcons in 2018 final.

This year’s tournament kicked off on Saturday with hosts Morocco pipping debutants Burkina Faso 1-0 in Group A.

On Sunday, Tunisia recorded the biggest win margin following their 4-1 triumph over Togo who had a player sent off while Cameroon and Zambia played goalless.

Also on Sunday, Senegal marked their return to the competition with a 2-0 win against Uganda.

The 2022 WAFCON tournament also doubles as the African qualifiers for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The top four teams will qualify for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and two more teams will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs.

NATO bases in Finland and Sweden would not protect the two countries but would endanger the cities hosting military infrastructure facilities, Russian State Duma (the lower house of parliament) Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin wrote on Telegram on Monday.

“The establishment of NATO bases will make neither Finland nor Sweden safer. On the contrary, it will endanger the people living in the cities that are going to host the military infrastructure facilities,” he pointed out, commenting on remarks by the mayor of the Finnish city of Lappeenranta.

Volodin took aim at claims trotted out by Mayor Kimmo Jarva that this would create a sense of safety. “He’s wrong. When military activities break out, strikes are first and foremost carried out on the enemy’s military infrastructure,” the State Duma chairman stressed.

Finland and Sweden, who applied to join NATO on May 18, were expected to receive a formal invitation to become the bloc’s members at a NATO summit in Madrid but Turkey blocked the accession process. In Madrid, the foreign ministers of Turkey, Sweden and Finland signed a memorandum making it possible for Sweden and Finland to join the alliance. The document particularly provides for the two Nordic countries’ cooperation with Ankara in the fight against terrorism, namely the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and its branches. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday that Sweden had pledged to extradite 73 people involved in terrorist activities to Turkey.

Increasing NATO’s Military Capacity May Distort European Security Structure – Expert

0

Bolstering NATO’s military potential may increase the internal tension in the alliance and disrupt the structure of European security, Executive Director of the Shanghai Society for Russia and Central Asia Li Lifan told reporters on Monday.

“Increasing the military potential is part of NATO’s efforts within its eastward expansion and this is done mostly to inspire and mislead some Eastern European countries. This requires finances and measures on setting up the organizational structure which is impossible to do immediately. On the contrary, this may increase the internal tension and disrupt the structure of European security which does not correlate with the interests of global peace,” the expert said commenting on the decision made at the alliance’s Madrid summit to increase its presence on the eastern flank as well as boost the NATO Response Force from 40,000 to more than 300,000 people.

Following the June 28-39 Madrid summit, the US-led military bloc approved a new strategic concept which is the alliance’s roadmap for the next 10 years. It names Russia as NATO’s “most significant and direct threat.” The document mentioned China for the first time in NATO’s history. Even though it is not viewed as a direct military adversary, it is described as a systemic challenge.

2023: Biafra Activities Won’t Let Me Be Peter Obi’s Running Mate – Kwankwaso

Former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso has said that the activities of Biafra agitators in the South-East will not allow him to become the running mate to Peter Obi of the Labour Party in the forthcoming presidential election.

Kwankwaso said that ordinarily, he would have liked to be Obi’s running mate, since he is currently jobless, but maintained that northern voters will never vote for any presidential candidate from the South-East.

Featuring on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics monitored by ABN TV, the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, presidential candidate, said that being Obi’s running mate would mean both of them will lose the election because northern voters will vote for a northern candidate.

For this reason, Kwankwaso believes that those asking him to become Obi’s running mate are enemies, who already know what the outcome would be.

“That is what the enemy outside there is saying [that I should be running mate to Peter Obi]. The implication is that if you put somebody from the South-East, unfortunately, there are many issues in the South-East.

“You see, the northern voter is the worst hit in this issue of maladministration In this country. But even in that circumstance, the northern voter believes he is better off with one united Nigeria.

“Therefore, most of the things that are happening in the South, especially the South-East, people are not comfortable with that and as long as you have anybody from there in any party, it would be very difficult for the northern voter to vote.”

When asked if he would desire to be Obi’s running mate, the former Governor added, “You see, I’m jobless now. I’m not doing any job. So becoming a vice president [why not?]”

Why I Rode Keke In Abeokuta – Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed why he rode a tricycle around the Kuto area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Saturday.

Obasanjo explained that he wanted to demonstrate to Nigerians that there is nothing bad in using tricycles for commercial purposes and small-scale businesses.

Obasanjo rode the tricycle and picked passengers from the OOPL premises through Kuto under the bridge amid surprises, greetings, and jubilation by onlookers.

In a statement by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former president said he has a passion for youth empowerment.

According to Obasanjo, he rode and picked “a male passenger to demonstrate that riding in the tricycle is safe if used properly” and to show Nigerians to learn how to “start small and grow their craft.”

“When I recently gave out tricycles to 85 young people across the nation, I received some feedback that they were sort of inappropriate gifts and some wondered if they were the best and suitable for young people.

“I have embarked on riding the tricycle to demonstrate to people that there is nothing bad in riding it and using same for commercial purposes.

“With tricycles and other small scale businesses, youths can be self-employed and ultimately, become economically independent.

“There is nothing wrong in young people starting small. The Keke is secure and safe when handled professionally and with discipline,” he said.

Speak Up Against Killings By Military In Anambra, IPOB Challenges Gov. Soludo

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has claimed ‘Fulani-controlled’ military are responsible for the alleged killing of innocent people in Ogbaru and Nnewi South Local Government Areas of Anambra State.

IPOB has now asked Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to speak up against the killings.

According to the secessionist group, the governor’s “silence” showed that he is allegedly competing with his Imo State counterpart, Hope Uzodimma, in using the military to kill his people.

This was contained in a statement signed by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, on Sunday.

Powerful admitted that although “there are some pockets of petty criminals in the State as obtainable elsewhere in Nigeria, “it is not enough reason for the Nigerian military to randomly be slaughtering our people like chickens.”

According to him, “The military started shooting innocent people sporadically on the road and some were gunned down in their homes in Ogbaru and Nnewi South.

“Soludo are you aware of the military exercise? Is this kind of military depopulation of your people part of the deal you entered with the enemies of Ndigbo before being voted into office as Anambra governor last November?”

The group added that IPOB and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) operatives were doing their best to stop those perpetrating criminalities in the region.
