Senator Kalu Charges RMAFC Nominee On Judiciary Funding

Occasioned by the recent legal battle between the judiciary and Federal Government over poor renumeration of Nigerian judges, Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has charged the Chairmanship nominee of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) Mohammed Shehu on improved funding for the nation’s Judiciary particularly Federal courts.

Recall that no fewer than sixty Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) had recently approached the National Industrial Court in Abuja where they Instituted a legal battle against the Federal Government on the poor salaries of Nigerian Judges.

However, Shehu had Tuesday appeared before the Senate Committee on National planning and economic affairs headed by Senator Olubunmi Ayodeji Adetumbi during which he responded to series of questions from members of the committee.

During the course of the screening, Kalu sought Shehu’s plans to resolve issues of poor renumeration of both serving and retired judges and other judicial workers. The Abia-North Senator also requested the RMAFC Chairmanship nominee’s intentions to improve funding of the supreme Court as well as other courts within the jurisdiction of the Federal government.

Kalu inquired; “Let me thank President Buhari for deeming you fit to nominate you to head this critical organisation, I must say that from my personal relationship with you, that you are capable for this Job. However, I will like you to tell this Honourable Senate committee representing the interest of millions of Nigerians on your thoughts over the poor funding of our nation’s judiciary especially the judges and how you intend to improve their renumeration.

Responding, Shehu posited that a functional judiciary system is required for the nation’s democracy to thrive. On the renumeration of judges Shehu regretted the current situation whereby newly appointed judges are placed on the same salary with other serving judges, pledging to look into it holistically when he eventually assumes office after the Senate’s confirmation.

On improving the efficiency of the commission Shehu revealed his plans to digitalise the operations of the RMAFC, while also stating his intention to quell the infighting amongst the various revenue agencies of the Federal Government. He promised to collaborate with the agencies to harmonise over issues of whose jurisdiction it is to collect revenue on behalf of the Federal Government.

The screening held at the new Senate Wing of the Senate had in attendance the National Deputy Chairman (North) of the APC, Senator Abu Kyari, Adamawa APC Gubernatorial flag bearer, Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed (Binani), Kaduna State APC Gubernatorial flag bearer, Senator Uba Sani, Senator Tanko Almakura, Senator Yusuf A. Yusuf, Senator Gershom Bassey, Senator Klepas Moses among others.

President Muhammadu Buhari had nominated Mohammed Shehu as the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). This was contained in a letter written by the president to the Senate seeking confirmation of the nomination.

Recall that Engr Elias Mbam, the former chairman, had in a letter dated April 11, 2022, resigned his appointment to contest for the office of the Governor of Ebonyi state under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

2023: Etigwe Uwa Urges Court To Declare Him Winner Of APGA Governorship Primary In Abia

One of the contestants for the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA governorship ticket in Abia State, Etigwe Uwa SAN has approached the Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia, capital of Abia State, urging it to declare him the winner of the party’s primary election held on 29th May 2022.

Uwa wants the court to determine the authentic governorship candidate of the party as a result of the two parallel governorship primary elections held on Sunday, May 29, 2022.

In one of the factional elections, Etigwe Uwa had polled 148 votes only second to Greg Ibe who polled 283 votes, while Ijioma Ijioma got 36 and Sir Chikwendu Udensi got 12 votes.

In an application in suit number FHC/UM/CS/100/2022, seeking to be joined as the 7th defendant in a matter between Chief Udensi and APGA, INEC, and four others, Uwa had applied to the court seeking to be joined in a suit filed by Udensi who polled the least number of votes following outcome of the primary election.

Uwa, the applicant, said he took part in the said primary election and was declared the first runner-up whilst Plaintiff, Udensi, came 4th but failed to join him in the suit.

The court has however held that the reliefs sought by plaintiff are prejudicial to the applicant’s rights and interests as the candidate that polled the second highest votes.

The applicant has sought an order of Court to grant leave to the party to allow him join as a defendant and be declared as winner of the said election.

The application for joinder is supported by a seven-paragraph affidavit duly deposed to by one Mr. Samuel Nwokocha, a clerk in the office of Uche S. Awa, lead counsel in the matter. العاب قمار حقيقية

Nwokocha said the plaintiff completely ignored the interests and rights of the applicants. bwin

At the election which was monitored by INEC representative, Bestman Okereke, Udensi was returned unopposed after the 433 delegates voted for him. كيف تربح المال من الانترنت مجاناً

Strike: Enough Of Taking Us For Granted – Students Berate Oyo Gov Over Closure Of Varsity

Governorship Election: Oyo LP Adopts PDP’s Makinde
Governor Seyi Makinde

The leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Students, Southwest (Zone D), has slammed the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over the continuous closure of the state university.

The two state-owned universities in Oyo, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, and the Oyo State Technical University, Ibadan, were shut down over an internal strike in January 2022, prior to the industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

Following the prolonged strike, the students, who spoke via a statement by the Coordinator of NANS Southwest Zone, Comrade Tegbe Stephen, said the governor has failed in his promises to students in the state.

The statement reads, “At the moment could no longer subscribe to silence which has yielded to nothing on the ongoing industrial actions affecting the state-owned institutions in Oyo State and which has our students staying at home when the calendar doesn’t read that for the last three months. We say enough of taking us for fools when things are not giving positive indications.

“The saddest part of the story was the fact that the affected institution declared the said strike a few weeks before the National body of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union declared a warning strike but the Governor neglected them but he ensured that the Ladoke Akintola University Lecturers who had earlier joined the nationwide ASUU strike are paid off to resume work.

“An action which discourages our ‘would be teachers’ and gives an impression that they are not on the priority list of the state government.

“If the Governor cares less about our Institution and claims to make education free at the secondary school level, it means he is only preparing our souls for the worst he wants us to experience as we progress in our academic endeavour.

“We are no longer taking carefulness as a defence mechanism against an enemy that attacks us bitterly and expresses absolute love for our children. It will be an action to present our bitter experience to those placing it on our doorsteps.

“We are at this point calling the attention of the state government to as a matter of urgency attend to the need of the staff members in the affected institution to abrogate the industrial action so as for our esteemed members to return to the lecture room as we will take decisive action to help ourselves out of the menace.

“With every sincerity, we are warning the state government for the last time as the action that follows will be a no retreat no surrender because we are tired of living under pretence of suffering and smiling when things are not in order. All we demand is better avenues to plan a better future”.

Pastors Harbouring Children Illegally In Ondo Church Not Our Members – CAN

The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has dissociated itself from the act of the pastor arrested in Ondo who reportedly camped his members on the church premises, misleading them into believing that the second coming of Jesus Christ popularly referred to as the rapture is now.

CAN also called on the police to thoroughly investigate them and their activities with a view to prosecuting the kingpin and his cohorts if there had been any infringement on the law of Nigeria and the rights of the members in his custody. العاب ربح مال حقيقي

This was contained in a statement signed by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, Special Assistant (Media & Communications) to the CAN President, His Eminence, Rev Dr Samson Ayokunle and made available to newsmen in Abuja.

The statement reads: “According to reports, one Josiah Peter Asumosa, an assistant Pastor in a church located in Ondo West Local government area of Ondo State was lying to the uninformed members that Rapture would take place in April but later said it had been changed to September, 2022 and told the young members to obey only their parents in the Lord.

“Though, the Pastor in question and his church, the Whole Bible Believers Church in Ondo are not members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at all levels and so, he is not known to us, but the fact that the church claims to be a Christian church necessitates that we state our position on his practice.

“No true Pastor would claim to know the date of the rapture because the Bible has stated it clearly that it is only God who knows the date. Whoever claims to know the date is not only misleading the public but cannot claim to be a genuine Servant of God. موقع المراهنات على المباريات He is at best, an agent of Satan pretending to be a Pastor.

“CAN, therefore, commends the Police for their prompt actions which included rescuing over 70 victims from the Church premises. They should further be subjected to medical check-ups since nobody knows what they were going through where they were camped.

“We hereby urge all denominations to keep an eye on the pastors under them towards ensuring wholesome biblical conduct. Members of the churches all over the nation are enjoined to cross-check every teaching from the Bible before believing it,” the statement further stated.

Eriksen Will Be A Waste For Man United – Murphy Warns

Eriksen Agrees To Join Man United On Three-Year Deal

Former Liverpool star, Danny Murphy, has warned Manchester United to desist from signing Christian Eriksen this summer.

Murphy insisted that Eriksen is not a world class player, adding that would start ahead of Bruno Fernandes in Man United’s squad under their new manager, Erik ten Hag.

Eriksen has ended speculation surrounding his next move in football by verbally agreeing to join Man United as a free agent on a three-year deal.

The Denmark international was impressive during his six-month loan deal at Brentford which ended this summer.

“I really like Eriksen, I have always admired him in terms of his creativity and the way he plays his football,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“He tries things, he is good at set-plays, two good feet but would it excite me if I was a United fan? He is going to be a squad player, isn’t he?

“He is not going to play instead of [Bruno] Fernandes.”

He added, “No. World class? Eriksen? No. No, no, no, no.’

“He’s a welcome addition to any squad because he is experienced and has quality.

“But when you are looking at the big games when United are competing against Liverpool, [Man] City and Chelsea, is he going to play in that first XI? No, is the answer.”

Putin Declares Victory In Eastern Ukraine Region Of Luhansk

Putin Declares Victory In Eastern Ukraine Region Of Luhansk

Barely a day after Ukrainian forces withdrew from their last remaining stronghold of resistance in the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin declared victory in the province.

The development was reported to Putin by Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in a televised meeting Monday, July 4.

Shoigu stated that Russian forces had taken control of Luhansk, which together with the neighboring Donetsk province makes up Ukraine’s industrial heartland of Donbas.

Shoigu told Putin that “the operation” was completed on Sunday after Russian troops overran the city of Lysychansk, the last stronghold of Ukrainian forces in Luhansk.

Putin, in turn, said that the military units “that took part in active hostilities and achieved success, victory” in Luhansk, “should rest, increase their combat capabilities.”

Putin’s declaration came as Russian forces tried to press their offensive deeper into eastern Ukraine after the Ukrainian military confirmed that its forces had withdrawn from Lysychansk on Sunday. Luhansk governor Serhii Haidai said on Monday that Ukrainian forces had retreated from the city to avoid being surrounded and killed.

“There was a risk of Lysychansk encirclement,” Haidai told the Associated Press, adding that Ukrainian troops could have held on for a few more weeks but would have potentially paid too high a price.

“We managed to do centralized withdrawal and evacuate all injured,” Haidai said. “We took back all the equipment, so from this point, withdrawal was organized well.”

Haidai said Russian forces were now focusing their efforts on pushing toward the line of Siversk, Fedorivka, and Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, about half of which is controlled by Russia. The Russian army has also intensified its shelling of the key Ukrainian strongholds of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, which has a stronger Ukrainian military presence in Donetsk.

On Sunday, six people, including a 9-year-old girl, were killed after Russian bombs shelled Sloviansk and another 19 people were wounded, according to local authorities. Kramatorsk also came under fire on Sunday.

An intelligence briefing Monday from the British Defense Ministry supported the Ukrainian military’s assessment, noting that Russian forces will “now almost certainly” switch to capturing Donetsk totally. The briefing said the conflict in Donbas has been “grinding and attritional,” and is unlikely to change in the coming weeks. Complete control of Luhansk and Donetsk would make Ukraine a landlocked country as Russia will have control of the Black sea parts of Luhansk and Donetsk.

While the Russian army has a massive advantage in firepower, military analysts say that it doesn’t have any significant superiority in the number of troops. That means Moscow lacks resources for quick land gains and can only advance slowly, relying on heavy artillery and rocket barrages to soften Ukrainian defenses.

Putin has made capturing the entire Donbas a key goal in his war in Ukraine, now in its fifth month. Moscow-backed separatists in Donbas have battled Ukrainian forces since 2014 when they declared independence from Kyiv after the Russian annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea. Russia formally recognized the self-proclaimed republics days before its Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine.

Since failing to take Kyiv and other areas in Ukraine’s northeast early in the war, Russia has focused on Donbas, unleashing fierce shelling and engaging in house-to-house combat that devastated cities in the region.

In his nightly video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed that Ukrainian forces will fight their way back to control Luhansk.

“If the command of our army withdraws people from certain points of the front where the enemy has the greatest fire superiority, in particular, this applies to Lysychansk, it means only one thing: We will return thanks to our tactics, thanks to the increase in the supply of modern weapons,” Zelenskyy said.
