Iran Accuses Detained French Couple Of Undermining Security

Iran on Wednesday accused a French couple detained in May while on a holiday of allegedly “undermining the security” of the country, the judicial authority said.

French teachers’ union official Cecile Kohler and her partner Jacques Paris were arrested in early May while on Easter vacation sightseeing in the Islamic republic. They are accused by the authorities of seeking to stir labour protests.

The pair stand “accused of association and collusion with the aim of undermining the security of the country”, judiciary spokesman Massoud Setayeshi told reporters in Tehran.

Iran said they were accused of “entering the country to sow chaos and destabilize society”.

The French government has condemned their arrest as “baseless” and demanded their immediate release.

“These two people are currently in police custody,” Setayeshi said, adding that “the prosecution is dealing with this case”.

In June, Iranian authorities announced they had arrested a left-wing activist on suspicion of working to “incite sedition and turmoil among the working class”, and who they said was suspected of meeting the French couple.

Iran’s schools have been hit by months of industrial action by teachers calling for salary raises, with regular protests outside education ministry offices across the country, including calling for the release of their colleagues arrested during previous rallies.

In April, teachers’ union member Rasoul Bodaghi was sentenced to five years in prison for taking part in the protests, according to a human rights group.

In May, hundreds of people demonstrated in several cities, after a series of government measures including the lifting of subsidies on flour and the increase in the prices of certain foodstuffs.

Kohler and Paris are among the latest Western citizens to be detained in Iran, in what activists claim is a deliberate policy to extract concessions from the West — accusations rejected by Tehran.

Late Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo

The African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA) has described as shocking the passing away of the secretary-general of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Dr. Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo.

Executive Secretary of ARDA, Anibor Kragha, who was also mourning Barkindo as they both served in the top Management at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) at different times, in a statement on Wednesday described Barkindo as a global energy icon, whose magnificent legacy would never be forgotten.

Barkindo died in the late hours of Tuesday at age 63 in Abuja, Nigeria.

Kragha noted that Barkindo would be remembered as a global energy icon, who worked assiduously to strengthen the worldwide energy markets at a critical time and successfully ensured the stability of the global economy, even during the unprecedented turmoil of the COVID pandemic and other shocks.

“The news of the passing away of Dr. Barkindo is shocking. He truly was an excellent scholar and bridge-builder par excellence who used his gifts to elevate the global oil sector. Nigeria, Africa, and indeed the world have lost a great treasure and his robust body of work will ensure that his legacy lives on for generations to come,” Kragha said.

While sending condolences across to the family, loved ones, and the entire energy sector, Kragha said Barkindo has left a great vacuum in the sector, especially in Africa at this critical juncture of balancing energy security and energy transition and would be greatly missed.

I Have Not Picked Senator Datti As My Running Mate For 2023 — Peter Obi
Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, has debunked reports that he has picked his running mate for the 2023 general election as Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.

He said this while speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Wednesday.

Obi, however, did not mention who exactly his running mate would be.

Baba-Ahmed, a 46-year-old academic, businessman, and politician, is from Kano in northern Nigeria.

From 2003 to 2007, he served in the House of Representatives. In April 2011, he was elected senator for Kaduna North in Nigeria’s Kaduna State on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change.

He was a member of the Peoples Democracy Party and one of the candidates for president, until last May, when he, like Peter Obi, withdrew from the race before the party’s national convention.

Following his nomination as the Labour Party candidate, Obi had listed his campaign director-general, Dr. Doyin Okupe, as his acting vice president.

2023: Fuel Subsidy A Scam, I Will Remove It – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, has said he will not hesitate to remove oil subsidy if elected as president.

Speaking when he featured on Arise Tv on Wednesday, Obi said the Subsidy regime in Nigeria is a scam.

Obi noted that subsidy is not beneficial to the country’s economy.

He said funds spent on subsidy will be channeled to other aspects of the economy where people will benefit.

He stated money spent on Subsidy can be used to address the challenges facing the country in sectors like power, and education.

Obi added that people will not oppose the removal of subsidy if they see that it would benefit them in the long run.

According to Obi: “I will remove subsidy and look for something to replace it. The subsidy is a scam.

“It’s not going to be business as usual. You need to go back and read what one of my former aides wrote about how I used stinginess to cut the cost of governance.”

Court Grants Sen. Rochas Okorocha Permission To Travel To UK For Medical Attention

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted permission to former Imo State Governor, Anayo Rochas Okorocha to travel to the United Kingdom for medical attention.

Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo, who granted the permission, ordered the Registrar of the court to release the traveling passport of the former governor to him to undertake the medical trip.

The order of the judge followed an application argued by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Ola Olanipekun who notified the court that his client has been having health challenges in recent times.

The senior lawyer argued that Okorocha, now a Senator representing Imo North in the Senate, will not abuse the order and will return to the country for his trial.

Although the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, represented by Mr. Chile Okoroma had sought to vehemently oppose the request, the Commission soft-pedaled when Justice Ekwo explained that the request would be granted with a caveat by the court.

While granting the request, Justice Ekwo ordered Okorocha to return the passport to the court registrar no later than three days after his arrival in the country.

The judge held that he would declare Okorocha wanted if he attempts to abuse the favour granted him.

Justice Ekwo subsequently fixed November 7 for his trial in the money laundering criminal charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

2023: Reason I Visited Gov Wike – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate, has claimed that his visit to Rivers State earlier last month wasn’t part of a gang-up.

Obi was one of the well-known politicians who traveled to the capital of Rivers State to meet with Governor Nyesom Wike privately after the governor’s return from Abuja after losing the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ticket to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

There were rumors that the former governor of Anambra, who left the PDP before the presidential primaries of the main opposition party, was in Port Harcourt to work with Wike or persuade him to join the Labour Party.

But Obi, while featuring on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Wednesday, said he met Wike to discuss issues concerning the Port Harcourt Port, pointing out that Wike is also his close friend.

According to him, as a Minister of Education, Wike helped him with funds to resolve some financial issues in the educational sector when he(Obi) was the Anambra State Governor.

“I met Governor Wike because he is the Governor of a state that is creative enough to have a future,” Obi said.

“The Port in Port Harcourt can help decongest the Port in Lagos and help to what I.want to do with the Port. We must generate the appropriate revenue that we’re doing today.

“I didn’t go to see Wike be another gang up or anything. Notwithstanding anything, I and Wike have been very close and very cordial. Everything I have invited him.

“Don’t forget that earlier this year I went to commission things for him. We’re friends. He’s one of all those who even supported me when I was Governor. He gave me…the Ministry of Education, when he was there had issues with teachers and he came and supported me with the UBEC money and everything.

“So, I’m going to visit every Governor to speak to them to understand that we should build a better Nigeria.”

Senator Talba Dumps APC For PDP

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has again lost another bigwig, Adamu Garba Talba, to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yobe state.

Talba, a former Senator for Yobe South Senatorial District, cited injustice experienced in the recent primary elections as one of the reasons for his defection. بلاك جاك اون لاين

“I have resolved to defect from the APC to the PDP due to the injustices we experienced in our former party, the APC, together with the people of my Yobe South district and my teeming followers throughout the state”, he declared.

Sen. Talba also claimed that a large number of individuals would soon leave the APC as a result of their defeat in the primary election.

The new PDP entrant maintained that before he decided to leave the APC, he made several attempts to fix the problem, including complaints to the national headquarters of the party, but yielded no result.

“We have to leave the party and rejoin my former political party (PDP) where we feel we would be accommodated and treated fairly because those who are supporting my political ideology were misled and treated unfairly”, he added.

He tasked his followers in Yobe South and other adherents around the state to massively vote for PDP in the forthcoming general elections in order to secure its victory at all levels.

Recall that, Senator Adamu Talba represented Yobe South Senatorial District during the 6th Assembly from 2007 to 2011 on the platform of the PDP. سباق الأحصنة
