Federal Government To Restructure, Reform NYSC – Minister Reveals

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has presented two corps members to the Bauchi State government for an award of Distinguished Service.

The state Coordinator of NYSC, Namadi Abubakar stated this in Bauchi on Thursday, during the Passing out Parade of the 2021 Batch B stream 1 corps members in the state.

According to him, the corps members, Wisdom Okeoghene with NYSC number BA/21B/1176 and Abdullahi Mubarak with BA/21B/0023, earned the prerequisites to be recognised with national awards.

ABN TV reports that based on the carrot and stick approach of the scheme, five others got their service years extended by two months as a result of various offences committed during their service year.

He said this service extension would serve as a deterrent and compel others with an unserious mind to sit up and remain diligent while the award would also encourage others to be up and doing.

“In line with the policy of the scheme to reward hard work and dedication to duty, two corps members who distinguished themselves in the rendition of their national service have been presented to the state government for the bestowal of the State Award for distinguished service.

“My dear corps members, it is my earnest and sincere hope that you have learnt the lesson intended by this carrot and stick policy of the scheme that all manners of reward abound, including rewards for hard work and indolence.

“So for those who performed creditably during the service year, I wish to tell you that your period of hard work has just begun, and for those who failed to live above board as expected, this is the time to start on a new slate,” he said.

Abubakar thanked the Bauchi State government, the security agencies, community leaders, corps employers and other stakeholders who made the service year a success for the corps members.

In his address, the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed said the people of the state, whom the corps members had served meritoriously in the last twelve months, appreciated and applauded their laudable contributions toward the socio-economic development of their communities.

The Governor was represented at the event by Mr Bako Abubakar, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.

He reiterated that the state government would continue to provide the necessary support needed to create the enabling environment for the managers of the scheme and corps members in the state to effectively discharge their duties.

No fewer than fifteen corps members out of the 1,831 that participated in the 2021 Batch B, Stream 1 service year were sanctioned for alleged misconduct and other offences.

Seven out of the defaulting corps members had their service year extended due to absenteeism, while eight others are to start afresh for absconding from the compulsory national assignment.

The Bayelsa State Government, however, reassured the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) of its continued support for the scheme to achieve its set objectives in the state.

Governor Douye Diri gave the assurance during the passing out parade ceremony of the 2021 Batch B, Stream 1 corps members held at the Peace Park in Yenagoa, the state capital.

Governor Diri, who was represented at the ceremony by his Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, pledged commitment to improved welfare and security of corps members posted to the state for the mandatory one-year service.

He said Bayelsa ranks among the best in terms of monthly remuneration and other welfare packages for youth corps members because of the importance the state government accords to the national civic duty.

The Bayelsa Chief Executive described the scheme as the shining light of the nation, which boasts of highly educated and patriotic youths, explaining that NYSC represented the country’s hope for a united, peaceful and egalitarian society.

He charged the corps members to remain diligent and patriotic, and to avoid actions that would bring shame to themselves, their families and the NYSC Scheme.

The Governor said Bayelsa was home to all Nigerians and insisted that Corps members who had just completed their national service were at liberty to stay back in the state to pursue their personal and legitimate goals.

He charged them to make the best use of the vocational skills they had acquired during their service year and be good ambassadors of Bayelsa State wherever they go.

“Our government will accord the NYSC Scheme all the necessary support it needs to achieve the objectives of the scheme, while also giving our commitment to the improved welfare and security of corps members still in service. As you get set to be demobilized from service today, (Thursday), I charge you to remain diligent and patriotic. Avoid any action that will bring shame to your families and the NYSC”.

“Let me assure those of you that wish to stay back in the state that Bayelsa State will continue to be a home for you all. For those of you that will return to your states of residence, I charge you to be good ambassadors of Bayelsa State. Tell your people the good stories of this state that had become your home in the past year and whenever you have the opportunity of giving back, don’t forget Bayelsa State”, he said.

2023 Election: Tinubu’s Victory Will Correct June 12 Anomaly – Keyamo

Bola Tinubu

The Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo, has said the election of All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, in 2023 will correct “the June 12, 1993 election anomaly”.

The June 12 1993 presidential election was won by the late philanthropist, Chief M.K.O Abiola. However, the election was annulled by the military junta headed by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd), for inconsiderate reasons.

Going down memory lane on Thursday, Keyamo in a series of tweets on his Twitter handle, said that with those currently vying to succeed the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), only the former Lagos State governor was at the forefront of the battle for the June 12 mandate.

The minister alleged that the former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, was among those who first abandoned the June 12 struggle.

He also alleged that Atiku’s principal, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who became Nigeria’s president in 1999, betrayed the June 12 cause.

According to him, the election of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023, a true hero of June 12, will largely address this anomaly of 1999.

He wrote, “No Presidential candidate today had ANYTHING to do with the June 12 struggle (which is the foundation of democracy we are enjoying today) except BAT and (to be honest) Sowore as a student leader, but BAT was more pivotal from exile. Atiku was one of the first to abandon June 12

“After the June 12 struggle, ‘strangers’ emerged from nowhere and hijacked the democratic train at the center; OBJ who opposed June 12 became the greatest beneficiary of the struggle. The election of BAT in 2023, a true hero of June 12, will largely address this anomaly of 1999

“Some feel the Yorubas weren’t compensated by the election of OBJ in 1999; he wasn’t the choice of the Yorubas because he betrayed the cause of June 12, hence they rejected him at the polls in 1999. The election of BAT in 2023, a June 12 hero, will largely assuage that feeling

“I can speak on these because, apart from defending NADECO leaders in court with my late boss Gani Fawehinmi, on Oct. 1, 1994, we launched the National Conscience movement to fight for June 12, and on June 11, 1995, I along with other comrades were arrested by the DSS and detained

“When I left Gani Fawehinmi late in 1995, I started a youth movement to prevent the self-succession bid of Abacha and to oppose Kanu who was promoting that bid. We were collecting signatures on the streets to petition the UN when we were picked up by the military junta and detained.”

Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has stated that the 2023 general elections will not be based on one turn, ethnicity, or religion.

Speaking while fielding questions on Arise Tv Morning Show on Thursday, the presidential candidate of Labour Party said it would be based on a Nigerian agenda to save the country.

He explained that in 2023 Nigerians must elect a capable candidate to pilot the country’s affairs, saying that primitive considerations by Nigerians during electoral cycles had led Nigeria to the current quagmire.

He stated that Nigeria at the moment needs an expert to save it, he appealed to Nigerians to vote for him as the best man for the job and not because of primitive consideration.

The presidential candidate said that he doesn’t want Nigerians to vote for him because he is from the South or on a regional basis, stressing that he wants Nigerians to vote for him based on competence and what he can offer Nigerians.

He stressed, “This election will not be based on ‘my turn’, ethnicity, and religion. It will be based on a Nigerian agenda to save this Nigeria. Nigeria is in a coma, and it needs a specialist, and that is why I’m offering to save its life or it will die.

“I’m appealing to people to vote to save Nigeria, and to save Nigeria is to hire the best.”

APC Has A Hand In Kuje Prison Attack, PDP Alleges

Kuje Prison Attack

Kuje Prison Attack

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the spate of insecurity and the audacity with which terrorists ravage the country unchallenged, under what the party terms a “rudderless” All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

According to the opposition party, the simultaneous terrorist attacks on the advance convoy of President Muhammadu Buhari in Katsina State as well as the Correctional Facility in Abuja, the nation’s capital, underscores the collapse of the nation’s security command and control structure.

In the PDP’s opinion, the failure of the APC to tame the violence and secure the citizens only adds to affirming assertions that the ruling party is complicit in the matter.

PDP Spokesman, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, in a statement on Wednesday noted that the terrorist attack on President Buhari’s convoy in his home State of Katsina as well as the “ferocious invasion and the freeing of hundreds of terrorists and criminals from the Kuje Correctional Facility further confirm that Mr. President has lost control of the security of the nation and that Nigerians are no longer safe under the APC”.

According to him, “the escalated spate of terrorism across the country has heightened apprehensions of complicity by the APC to open up our nation to more terrorist attacks with the view to stall the 2023 general elections.

“The failure of the APC administration to act on the intelligence provided by the Directorate of State Services (DSS) which on Tuesday July 5, 2022 reportedly warned of an impending attack on the Kuje Correctional Facility gives credence to fears by Nigerians of complicity at very high level of the APC administration.

“This is in addition to further reports that soldiers deployed to the precinct of the Kuje Correctional Facility and who had become familiar with the terrain were redeployed 24 hours before the terrorists attacked”.

The PDP through its spokesman demanded that the APC government should come clean on who ordered the reported redeployment of soldiers and who failed to act on the intelligence provided by the DSS.

“Nigerians can recall the public confession by the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai at the wake of the bloody Abuja-Kaduna terrorist attack that the APC-led administration knows the whereabouts and the plans of the terrorists ravaging our nation but deliberately refused to act.

“Nigerians will also recall how APC leaders publicly romanced and paid money to terrorists.

“It is rather distressing that President Buhari appears helpless without any decisive and concrete steps taken to stem the tide of terrorist attacks in our country.

“Even more curious is that President Buhari continues to retain Mr. Isa Pantami as Minister of Communication and Digital Economy to head and coordinate this very critical sector in the fight against terrorism in our country in spite of Isa Pantami’s confession of affiliation to terrorists.

“With the sequence of events in the last 48 hours, it is clear to Nigerians that the APC government headed by President Buhari has failed in the basic purpose of government which is to secure life and properties of the citizens,” the PDP argued.

The party also stated that given the urgency of the security situation in the country, it has become imperative that President Buhari convenes an emergency Council of State meeting for a review of the prevailing dangerous security atmosphere in our country.

The PDP further called on the National Assembly to pass a vote of no confidence in Isa Patimi and insist on his immediate removal as a minister.

“The National Assembly should also immediately summon the Security Chiefs for a thorough investigation on the circumstances resulting in the failure of our security system,” the opposition party demanded.

The PDP urged Nigerians to remain at alert and keep hopes alive, adding that the nightmare of the APC administration will be over by May 2023.
